Is there an online Java language reference?
Hi,
Im looking for a reference that gives textual descriptions of the Java language. The only ones Ive found only have the syntax of the statements/classes with return values and arguments, not a description of what the class/method/variables ACTUALLY do.
thanks for your tips,
wuardo
Do you already use the Java 1.3 API documentation. This should be the first place to start when searching for classes and methods. It can be downloaded from:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs.html
I would also make sure you have access to the Sun Java Tutorials. It comes with example code and sample programs. It can be downloaded for free at:

Find in Language Reference - feature removed???
In Flex 3 there is Find in Language Reference option in Help menu - is there anything similar in FlashBuilder 4?
There is only Flash Builder help but It wont search the Actionscript 3 Language Reference? At least I haven't found a way yet.A few options:
ASDoc view (Standalone: Window > ASDoc, Plug-in: Window > Show View > Other... ASDoc)
This will show ASDoc content within Flash Builder
Navigate > Open Language Reference
For built-in Flash or Flex SDK APIs, this will open Adobe Help. To open help in a browser instead, read this post http://blogs.adobe.com/jasonsj/2010/03/open_asdoc_language_reference_in_browser.html.

Online language reference doesn't load
The online language reference doesn't seem to load. I've tried multiple browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox) as well as 3 different ISPs. Is there are new URL to this?
The old one could be found here;
Adobe ActionScript® 3 (AS3) API ReferenceAlas no, I have disabled flash, uninstalled it, exactly the same results as before only the 1st 2 classes load.
This is exactly the same problem that other people have reported here;

And no, Adobe is not being blocked by the firewall. -
Java Language/Syntax Reference
Is there a web page somewhere that lists all the functions/methods/classes/etc to do with the JAVA language? Microsoft have the MSDN Library and it has all the languages in there with what I'm after but funnly they don't cover JAVA.
What I am specifically looking for atm is the equivelent to the String Function len(). In VB if you want the length of a string all you do is:
sLenOfString = len(string)
How do you do this in JAVA?It's not a reference per se, but the "Learning the Java Language" trail of the Java Tutorial covers syntax.
Here's another useful link for a Java programmer. :)

Is there any online reference to the XML methods available in 6.1?
I would like to set up a LabView system that acquires data from local hardware, and then sends acquired data as XML "packets" to a remote web service. I can't seem to find any online reference to this when I search the site. I don't want the "gee golly 6.1 is cool" marketing stuff. Just a simple technical reference to abilities.If you're looking for more technical information about all the new features of 6.1, try the LabVIEW 6.1 Upgrade Notes. Here's what they say about the XML functions:
"Use the Flatten to XML function located on the Functions»Advanced»Data Manipulation palette to convert any LabVIEW data type to the XML format according to the LabVIEW XML schema. Use the Unflatten from XML function located on the same palette to convert a data type in the XML format into LabVIEW data.
For these conversions, LabVIEW uses a predefined XML schema that is described in labview\help\LVXMLSchema.xsd."

Flex Builder language reference update
I hope I can find some answers here. I have the following problem or wish ;-)
After installing/configureing flex builder 3 with the new 3.5 sdk I still have old language reference files in use. Is there a way to install a new documentationt set? if yes, how and where can I get those? I've been searching for some time now, but without success.
I know, I could download the different packages for flex, air, as3 etc, extract the asdocs and use them offline in my browser. But I'd relly like to have them included in flex builder.
Thanks in advance
MarcelYes, I want to be able to type something simple like "CANVAS" and have the ******* (edit: didn't know a "frig" was foul language, haha) documentation for that class come up. Is that too much to ask Adobe? I don't want 500 pages of crap tutorial help pages that happen to have the word canvas in them, just show me the class interface details!
PDF just isn't the same. I'd like to have a decent chm like the ones floating around for Java. Setting search scope doesn't help, I still seem to get crap results from a search. This should be fast and easy, type the name of the class you want details about and there it is. Right now freaking google is probably the closest thing out there but you're still dependent on the internet which has even more off topic clutter, and you have to type "flex " beforehand--lame. Has anyone figured out an easier way to do this moronicly simple task with minimal effort? We shouldn't have to hit more buttons than the number of letters in the class name + ENTER. I know, I'm picky. -
Chm - WinHelp - Flex 3 Language Reference
Hi, do you know if there is a chm (WinHelp-File) for the
the Flex 3 Language Reference around?
I know "Live Docs" and the Eclipse-Help-System.
Both systems are slow an not so comfortable to search or to
browse as the chm-file.
Yesterday I found iChm - a MAC chm reader and I really like
it. The only thing I need is
the Flex-chm.Yes, I want to be able to type something simple like "CANVAS" and have the ******* (edit: didn't know a "frig" was foul language, haha) documentation for that class come up. Java Complete Reference 8th or 9th Edition?
I am looking to obtain certification in Java SE 7. However, I am also aware that Java SE 8 will be released soon and I will need to take the upgrade exam for that in the future.
Knowing this, would it be wiser to purchase the Java Complete Reference 9th (Java SE 8) or 8th edition (Java SE 7)? Is it a valid assumption that I could learn both SE 7 and 8 content in the 9th edition book or would some key things for the SE 7 exam be left out?Given the major differences in the core language, in effect changing Java into another language with the same name, you're not going to learn Java 7 from a book about 8.
If you're serious about learning both, get both books and use them side by side, each for the version of the language it's intended for.
Do keep in mind that most companies aren't going to change their toolset to include 8 for several years to come, in fact most are still using 6 and I have encountered 1.5 still last year.
1.4 seems to be going the way of the dodo.
AND that's just compiler and JRE versions being used. There are a lot of companies out there running 1.6 and 1.7 runtimes that still require all code to use 1.4 language level, allowing 1.5 language level only where needed for interacting with 3rd party libraries.
Given the massive changes in 8, that situation is going to only get worse. Many companies aren't going to allow any of the new stuff to be used at all. -
JavaFX Language reference Chapter 9
When will this chapter be written? As you can see it does not contain anything right now: http://openjfx.java.sun.com/current-build/doc/reference/ErrorHandling.html
h1. Chapter 9. Error Handling and Exceptions
h2. *[To do: write chapter]*I fear the language reference haven't been updated since JavaFX 1.0... Despite the glaring holes (animation...) and now outdated information.
Looks like writing code is the current priority, which isn't a bad thing, but having to learn partial information from tutorial and various articles isn't the best thing.
Note that this chapter probably haven't much to say more than "use try/catch/finally as in Java", except the fact that there are no checked exceptions in JavaFX, ie. all catches are optional. -
The overhead of reference counting has led to a preference for mark-and-sweep garbage collection. But this has some obvious disadvantages as well. For example, creation of temporary objects chews up memory; this reduces performance due to having to search for unused objects during garbage collection. Although incremental garbage collection can spread the search cost evenly over time, this does not reduce the cost.
It is evident that both reference counting and mark-and-sweep have their place. Although it is conceivable that the JVM could dynamically choose between the two for any given class, this seems difficult to implement.
The Java language specification should allow the programmer to specify whether a class is reference counted or not. To maintain compatibility, reference counting could be specified by adding the "transient" keyword to the class declaration.It wasn't only the "overhead" of reference counting that led to the use of other methods of garbage collection. There was also the problem that circular references (which are very common) meant that islands of inter-reference could never be collected, leading to memory leaks. This is the case in Visual Basic, for example, and it's sometimes surprisingly difficult to write code to get circular references unlinked so that garbage collection can take place.
There's also the problem that the existing method of garbage collection (which can be summarized as "Don't refer to it and it will go away") appears to be too complicated for many programmers to understand, leading them to voodoo coding styles to "get around it". So I don't support making it even more complicated. -
I use Oracle 10g ....... but when I used that function in :-
Oracle® Database
PL/SQL Language Reference
11g Release 1 (11.1)
B28370-02
September 2007
page 252
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION compute_bonus (emp_id NUMBER, bonus NUMBER)
RETURN NUMBER
IS
emp_sal NUMBER;
BEGIN
SELECT salary INTO emp_sal
FROM employees
WHERE employee_id = emp_id;
RETURN emp_sal + bonus;
END compute_bonus;
The following equivalent SELECT statements invoke the PL/SQL subprogram in
Example 8–5 using positional, named, and mixed notation:
SELECT compute_bonus(120, 50) FROM DUAL; -- positional
SELECT compute_bonus(bonus => 50, emp_id => 120) FROM DUAL; -- named
SELECT compute_bonus(120, bonus => 50) FROM DUAL; -- mixed
====================================
and than executed first select statement ..... it pass successfully
but in second and third select ...... I found this errors :-
SQL> SELECT compute_bonus(120, 50) FROM DUAL;
COMPUTE_BONUS(120,50)
8050
SQL> SELECT compute_bonus(bonus => 50, emp_id => 120) FROM DUAL;
SELECT compute_bonus(bonus => 50, emp_id => 120) FROM DUAL
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
SQL> SELECT compute_bonus(120, bonus => 50) FROM DUAL;
SELECT compute_bonus(120, bonus => 50) FROM DUAL
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
is there any relation between that I use oracle 10g and those errors ???
or the code wrote wrong in oracle reference 11g ( I hope not ) ???yes, you are correct. the "what's new" section of the 11g pl/sql manual states
"Before Release 11.1, a SQL statement that invoked a PL/SQL subprogram had to specify the actual parameters in positional notation. As of Release 11.1, named and mixed notation are also allowed. This improves usability when a SQL statement invokes a PL/SQL subprogram that has many defaulted parameters, and few of the actual parameters must differ from their default values." -
Standalone ActionScript 3.0 Language Reference display not working
I am unable to view the majority of the downloadable standalone ActionScript 3.0 Language Reference.
The document in question: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/standalone.zip
(link grabbed from http://www.adobe.com/devnet/actionscript/references.html)
To replicate:
1) Download the file from http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/standalone.zip.
2) Expand the zip, open the resulting folder and open the index.html document in your web browser.
3) Pick any filter link you desire from the choices on this page. Notice that the package and class filters in the header continuously display "Retrieving Data from Server…"
4) Click on the Classes link in the header at the top.
Result: The class list displays only momentarily, then completely hides.
It would be great if there was a way to completely circumvent the filters. There appear to be several missing linked elements in the download, such as en_US/shared/ahpods/AHPod.js.
I would gladly settle for an all-in-one PDF of the reference.Fix from Joe ... Ward on the http://forums.adobe.com/message/3958537#3958537 thread:
Unzip the reference into a folder named "langref" -- there's a bug in the Javascript that filters the page content based on your selections (in those controls that say "Retrieving data from server..."). The code actually looks for a folder named "langref". (I'm sure the engineer who did that thought it was a quick hack he or she would clean up right away...)
THANKS! -
What is the "Language Reference" difference between AS, Flash, and FLEX?
I'm fairly new to the world of Flash9 / Flex2 / ActionScript3
development environment.
As I was reading through tutorial for FLEX/AS, I was
introduced to Language Reference for FLEX 2.0.
At the same time, I noticed in FLASH9 / AS3 there is also
Language Reference page. For a moment, I thought these 2 Language
Reference shared the same API / Language components.
As I have found out, when I was looking up Language Reference
for "Button" class for FLE2.0, it provided
- mx.controls.Button
But for Language Reference for "Button" class for FLASH9 /
AS3, it provided different package
- fl.controls.Butoon
Why are there 2 sets of packages for the class Button?
Shouldn't there just be one package for class Button?
thanks,
MingHello,
The names can be confusing, especially since IE identifies Flash Player as Shockwave Flash Object in 'Manage Add-ons'. They are, in fact, two different programs, as noted in your Programs and Features screenshot. Flash Player plays web content created using Flash Professional, Flex, or Flash Builder (ActionScript programming language). Adobe Shockwave Player plays web content that has been created using Adobe Director. They are not interchageable. Web content created using ActionScript requires Flash Player and web content created with Adobe Director requires Shockwave Player.
