Is jakarta-tomcat is Application Server or Only Web container ?

I think we can call it application server, but there's something we have to make clear.
Technically, Tomcat isn't a complete application server, it's only a JSP/Servlet container. But web server is so simple that it doesn't take much effort for a server like Tomcat to embed web server function, so Tomcat can serve as ordinary web server as well. That I say he isn't a complete app server is because it doesn't support EJB and other application model.

  • Oracle Application Server 10.1.0.2 contains JDK 1.4?

I download Oracle Application Server 10.1.0.2 and this contains JDK 1.4. How alter to JDK 1.5 or 1.6?

You need to decide if you want to use the configuration I pointed too above which lets you use JDK 5 in an OC4J 10.1.3 installed under an OAS 10.1.2.
If you don't want to take this approach and you want to deploy directly into the OC4J that comes with OAS 10.1.2 and supports JDK 1.4 - then you'll need to setup JDeveloper to compile with JDK 1.4 - instructions for this are here:

  • Possible to connect remotely to Apache TomCat JSP application server

Hi, I've just installed an Apache TomCat server and locally playing around with some JSP and Servlets.
I have an website which is hosted remotely by an hosting company. However they do not provide JSP/Servlets server as an service.
I want to know is it possible to add some code or something which connects to my JSP/Servlet TomCat server remotely. So, allowing me to add JSP code or Servlets to say my index.html at my website host location which then connects from their to my TomCat server JVM and spit the goods back out at my website location.
Is this possible? seems quite awkard?

You are certainly not in an ideal situation. While you could use AJAX, and a library like DWR to send requests between the hosted website and whatever JSP/Servlet engine you have available, the resulting application will likely be slower and less reliable than if you hosted it all in the same place. Realistically, you won't save yourself any effort by doing it this way. Application hosting is a lot more resource-intensive than hosting static content, and even more so due to the amount of abuse that goes on in the wild Internet.
While you've solved the problem temporarily, your JSP/Servlet engine is still vulnerable to DoS-based attacks once it's determined where your AJAX servlets reside. The only long-term solution is to go with a provider that has proper JSP hosting that is known to have good security.

  • URL Rewriting Session ID Length in iPlanet Application Server

    Hi there,
Does anyone know what the maximum length of the session ID value is when
using URL rewriting/encoding for session tracking (i.e.: ";jessionid=1234"
appended to the end of the URL) with iPlanet Application Server 6.0's
servlet container (or any previous versions)?
Does the length vary or is it fixed? And does WebSphere encode server or
failover information into the ID? WebLogic for instance, encodes the
primary and secondary failover servers into the ID when running in a
    cluster)?
And finally, is there any way to restrict or specify the maximum length of
    the session ID?
I ask this due to a limitation with some WAP clients & gateways which
prevents the URL from exceeding 128 characters.
Any info on this issue from iPlanet staff or anyone else is much
    appreciated.

I'm fairly certain that it is fixed. 18 for the attibute, 16 for the value, plus
1 for the equals. (Plus 1 for the ? if it didn't already exist.)
So 35 or 36 depending on how you count it. Someone needs to verify this and
    check my counting though.

  • Reverse proxy to applications on a server by just domain names possible?

    Hi All
I am looking for a solution to set up a single server, that hosts four J2EE web applications running on a Glassfish application server with just only one IP address.
When a user wants to use an application, he/she can just type URL without specifing port and path, and the corresponding web application will be displayed accordingly as shown below
    http://sub1.domain1.com -- > webapp1 at port 9100
    https://sub2.domain1.com -- > webapp2 at port 9200
    http://sub1.domain2.com -- > webapp3 at port 9300
    https://sub2.domain2.com -- > webapp4 at port 9400
I am wandering whether I could use reverse proxy of Sun Java System Web Server 7 to route the traffic from the domain names to their own application on Glassfish as shown above? I tried by creating two HTTP listeners to listen at port 80, and 443 respectively, but I could not access different applications based on domain names without specifying specifix path or port.
Is there any recommended resources or example of the mapping, or any other suggested solution?

Thank you for your reply nsegura. I created 4 different virtual servers as you suggested and it worked :)
However, I have a problem in reverse proxy base on path.
    The scenario is below
I have an J2EE application that needs to be deployed in three different environment (production, training, testing). It
is the same application for three environments, so I want them to have the same context-root. I want to use Sun Web Server 7.0 to reverse proxy to the application in each environment based on path, not URL redirect. Example of URL are shown below
    https://sub.domain3.com/app -- > http://localhost:9500 (with context-root /app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/training/app -- > http://localhost:9600 (with context-root /app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/testing/app -- > http://localhost:9700 (with context-root /app)
So far, it works if I set context-root of the application in each environment differently
    https://sub.domain3.com/app -- > http://localhost:9500 (with context-root /app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/training/app -- > http://localhost:9600 (with context-root /training/app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/testing/app -- > http://localhost:9700 (with context-root /testing/app)
I am wandering whether there is a solution with Sun Web Server 7 that I can use to achieve reverse proxy of the same application in different environments without having to modifying context-root for each environment and use URL redirect?
I was thinking about using rewriting path with reverse proxy, but I did not see this function under reverse proxy tab.
    Any ideas?

  • I/PM ERP Integration with Oracle Application Server instead of Websphere

I'm just starting an integration between IPM 7.7.1 and JDE EnterpriseOne v8.12.
In the EIS documentation for 7.7.1 has some specific assumptions regarding integrations with JDE EnterpriseOne (8.12), specifically using IBM Websphere. We opted to go with the Oracle Portal and Oracle Application Server. Just curious if the integration approach/instructions would require some adjustments because of the non-Websphere selection my JDE team chose. Or if it just plan won't work.
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
The reason that the documentation specifically spells out IBM Websphere is most likely because it was the application server that we developed and tested with at the time. The important requirement for this type of integration is that this server be an Intel based server running a Microsoft OS. The reason for this is because there are dlls with the Oracle IPM product that enable communication between the IPM functions and the JDE Business functions. If the Enterprise server for JDE is intel based then a JAS can exist on the same server, the dlls can be on that machine and the extra server is not required. This server is only required if the Enterprise server is not intel based. As far as your choice to use Oracle Application Server goes, I really have no basis to say if this works or not. My thought is that it shouldn't matter as long as the JAS server is an intel based, 32 bit server running a Microsoft OS. There are many other variables and lots of experience implementing this type of integration with JDE within the Oracle IPM consulting team. Give us a call if we can help.
    Hope this helps,
    Matt

  • Excel file creation on application server

    Gurus,
I have seen a lot of threads on excel file creation in application server, but failed to see if anyone had a solution.
Problem: In background execution I need to create an excel sheet on application server, the data would be contained in internal table, The FM like WS_DOWNLOAD etc..cannot support these as they have GUI component.
All the documentation that I have been through states to use dataset which saves the file in.csv or txt format seperated by delimiter, is it possible to save as a true excel file.

  • Download spool to PDF document on application server

    Hi,
I am using function CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF to convert a sapscript spool and then downloading the internal table provided to a pdf file on the application server. The sapscript form contains company logos.
After transferring the file from the application server to PC and then opening the pdf document I get the following message:
"There was an error while trying to parse an image."
The PDF doc contains everything except the company logo.
I noticed that this works (i.e. company logo is present in the downloaded file) when I transfer the internal table that contains the PDF contents onto my PC using GUI_DOWNLOAD using mode 'BIN'. However, when I transfer the contents of the same internal
table to a file on the application server using abap statement:
'Open Dataset <filename> FOR OUTPUT IN BINARY MODE'
I get the problem described above.
I noticed that SAP has provided standard program RSTXPDFT4 to convert a spool and download it into a PC file. However is there a similar program that downloads a spool onto the application server? Perhaps there is a 'special' way in downloading PDF documents onto the application server?
I don't this problem with sapscripts that do not have a company logo.
Is there a certain restriction on 'Open Dataset'with transfering logos in PDF documents?
Any help would be greatly appreciated in the form of reward points.
    Thanks

    Hi,
We convert some of our spools to pdf and store them on the app server using following high level process.
    CALL FUNCTION 'CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF'
           EXPORTING
                src_spoolid = p_spool
                no_dialog   = 'X'
                dst_device  = 'LOCL'
           TABLES
                pdf         = lt_pdf
           EXCEPTIONS
                OTHERS      = 0.
    Write PDF file
      CALL FUNCTION 'GUID_CREATE'
           IMPORTING
                ev_guid_32 = l_guid.
      CONCATENATE '/your_path_goes_here/'
                  l_guid
                  INTO l_filename.
      CONCATENATE l_filename '.pdf' INTO l_filename.
    Store
OPEN DATASET l_filename IN TEXT MODE.
IF NOT sy-subrc IS INITIAL.   " only write pdf if new
        LOOP AT lt_pdf.
          TRANSFER lt_pdf TO l_filename.
        ENDLOOP.
      ENDIF.
      CLOSE DATASET l_filename.
If it doesn't work, I would 1st try and play with image type. I'm wondering if it's tripping on image conversion. Perhaps revert to 1st principles and try monochrome bitmap and a few variations thereof. I stand by my code above. Definitely works. HTH, Dave

  • Difference between web server and servlet container

I can't able to figure out the techincal difference between web server(such as java web server) and servlet containers(such as jakarta-tomcat).If you please let me know then I will be very thankful to you.

The web server serves html pages to browsers that request pages. It can also send images, javascript, flash content, and a few other things. When a request comes into the web server for a servlet or jsp, the web server calls on the Servlet container to do THOSE jobs.
The Servlet container is the execution environment for a jsp or servlet (they are both servlets) to run Java code on the server and do logic.
So you see, the web server spits out static content, where either no logic is involved, or the client's web browser does the logic. The Servlet container is used for applications that execute code, perform logic, connect to databases, etc.
So they work together, but are completely separate logically.
