Is USB 2 a software thing or a hardware thing?

hello,
I like to make iMovies, but they take up alot of space on my computer. So, I want to store them on my 60 GB iPod. But, the playback is terrible and it's impossible to edit the movie like that.
So, how can I get USB 2 speed capabilities on my computer? I don't quite understand it. Is it posible to just download it for free, or do I have to by some kind of hardware and have it built in to the computer?
btw, I use an iBook, OSX 10.3.9
thanks!

The hard disc in an iPod isn't meant to spin constantly, which is what's needed for playing back - and editing - video.
A USB connection isn't really good enough for editing movies, because it doesn't guarantee a sufficiently constant high-speed connection.
You need a FireWire connection (..the early iPods had that, instead of USB..) and an external FireWire hard disc. The teeny hard disc inside an iPod, though, isn't robust enough.
Buy any external FireWire hard disc, and format it as Mac OS Extended, using the 'Erase' tab in Disk Utility, which you'll find in the 'Utilities' folder in 'Applications'.

  • What are different between software VM-FEX and hardware VM-FEX?

    Hi everybody,
I am confuse software VM-FEX and hardware VM-FEX.
Does the software VM-FEX is Emulated mode and hardware VM-FEX is VMdirectpath mode?
If i design a VM-FEX, is there must have nexus 1000V or not ?
Is  Nexus 1000V and VM-FEX must work together or select one of them?

    Have a look at http://keepingitclassless.net/2013/06/cisco-vm-fex-and-the-nexus-1000v/
VM-FEX in hardware requires on the host side a VIC adaptor, and a UCS FI or N5k as a switch (and control plane)
VM-FEX in hardware has 2 submodes (PTS = Emulated Mode) and UPS (path Through)
VM-FEX makes use of the VEM module (same as N1K; it is operated in a different mode however)
VEM can do N1k local switching or VM-FEX path through, but not both !

  • Charge Battery through USB without Loading Software?

    Hi All,
Anyone who can please assist; would appreciate it.  Have been trying to investigate whether a Blackberry Battery can be charged via USB (Connected to a PC or Laptop) without having the Blackberry Desktop Software loaded.
Currently I have the Blackberry 8900 but even with the previous versions; I have never been able to charge my phone without having the Software loaded. Unfortunately my laptop is loaded with Windows XP 2002 Service Pack 2 and when loading the Software it seems to mess with the speed and sometimes ends Outlook and gives me a Blue ERROR screen which then I have to switch off my PC and then switch on after 5 minutes only. This sometimes happens 3 times in one day?
    Please advise, anyone, anyone!!!!

Also, check that you are using only root USB ports...no hubs (sometimes the front-side ports are hubs...use a rear USB port). And make sure to try disabling USB power management in your system configuration (Device Manager).
Apologies in advance if this is redundant -- there's no way to be sure if you've already seen and tried these.

I'm installing windows 8 64 from iso dvd-I did the partition wiht BCamp 5.
I did the usb drive with the compatibility software-once installation start from the dvd, it ask me for some disk, usb or dvd drivers to continue.
How I can continue the instalation? How I can provide those driver to the instalation process?
    Thanks
    Manuel

You can't get there with GUID/GPT.
There are tips on making a USB flash device that is bootable.
You can set aside a small 6GB partition somewhere and put Windows 7 installer there and run it WHILE IN Windows.
Windows Vista can be upgraded in place to 7 RC.
    You'll need NTFS (30-50GB).
Windows doesn't support FW for booting.
You can create a drive that has Master Boot Record.

  • Help needed! Usb Data recovery software for word documents?

A friend of mine has saved ALL of her precious work on a USB pen, which for no apparent reason has stopped working!
It isn't being recognised by windows, but my mac is detecting it with trial software which I cannot buy on my measly student income. Not doable.
Is there any data recovery software available for macs which detect microsoft documents which is....ummm free?
It's beginning to drive me mad I've been looking at this stupid pen for ages. But my mate has offered me 50 quid if I get it sorted, so I am persevering! Any help would be appreciated guys!

You can try the free Demo version of Data Rescue. It does not detect Word files; it's looking for anything on the device that matches the criteria you set.
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • MiFi 4510L Is USB just for software?

I just received a new 4510L and there was a USB cable that came that said right on the bag.  "The USB cable is only for software upgrades."  No real mention in the literature.  Question is if it is connnected, will it charge/draw power off of the computer or do I need it to be plugged into a separate power source.  If not, is there any other way through the USB or Micro USB port (again silent in literature) to charge outside of the power cord?  My old computer had a Gobi Chip which was only one user, but at least did not need two power sources.
    Thanks

Q: Question is if it is connected, will it charge/draw power off of the computer?
A: Yes.  The USB Cable can be used as a power cord if connected to a computer.  You need firmware version 2.23 or higher.
    Some history on this issue:
The packaging is intended for earlier firmware versions of the MiFi where this was not possible.  The original MiFi firmware shutdown the radio of the MiFi if it detected a data connection of any kind (ex. a computer).  The community put out all sorts of hacks to work around this functionality.  Eventually Novatel/VZW opened it up and eliminated the need for the hacks.  The USB cable will still not pass data/internet though, it can only charge the device or perform firmware updates.

  • USB TV tuner software for OS X?

I just bought a USB TV tuner, and right now I have to boot my Mac Pro into boot camp in order to use it.  Is there some kind of software for OS X that I can use so that I don't have to do that?
EDIT: I found EyeTV, but I would rather have something that is free.  I don't want to pay $80 just to not have to reboot to watch TV on my Mac.

@Doug: To play Devil's Advocate, is it not worth $80 for the time you waste to reboot the Mac?  With "free", you get what you pay for.
... I guess I will just have to reboot a lot (which I do anyway, as I use a lot of Windows apps).
Well, if you're in Windows "a lot", then having the tuner work in Windows would seem to be more desireable than having it work in OSX.    Me personally, I built a cheap Windows box to be my TV and DVR so that I don't have to worry about an app crashing taking out my TV (or vice versa.)
@Lupunus: it is a shame that the forum software won't let one change the correct answer once marked.  <:-(
I'm in Windows a lot, but I'm in OS X more.  And as for the forum software not letting me change the correct answer, I totally agree with you.

  • USB Port Monitoring Software??

I have a software requirement for the following task.
     - I need to know whether there is a way to get information about the usage of USB ports of my PC for a given period of time (Eg: I need to know how many USB devices were connected or how much data were

If anyone knows that how to get those information using a software or by any other way, Pls let me know.

  • X6-00 USB disconnects during software update

Right connecting my X6-00 to Ovi Suite and it says there is a device software update to v31.0.004. I click on install, it runs through the back-up fine and then starts installation. However it constantly loses the USB connection so keeps restarting the software install.
I've used the same USB cable and Ovi Suite to update my N8's software in the past without any problems so what am I doing wrong?

Though 20 minutes seems too long a wait.. the OP most probably knows what happens during the update as he mentions I've used the same USB cable and Ovi Suite to update my N8's software in the past without any problems .. Also the problem seems something else as he also mentions However it constantly loses the USB connection so keeps restarting the software install.

  • USB thumb drive not mounting... hardware or software problem?

I have two systems I'm working with. The first is a MacBook, running 10.5.6 (also Parallels 4 for WinXP). I have no problems here.
The problematic system is a MacPro, running 10.5.6 (and Parallels 4 for WinXP).
    Symptoms:
All USB ports function (sort of). I can plug my keyboard in to any port and they work. If I plug a thumb drive in (to any port), it periodically flashes, but never mounts, nor is it visible in Disk Utility or System Profiler.
If I start Parallels with the thumb drive inserted. It asks me what I want to do with the device, and I can tell it to mount on the mac, and it does. If Parallels is already started, then I insert the thumb drive, nothing (Mac OS or Parallels) notices it was inserted.
If I boot Windows directly, then insert the thumb drive, it tells me the port is not a high-speed port, but will still mount the device.
Finally, again, I have no problems with this thumb drive on my MacBook.

    Roger
This may be sorted out in the Preferences for Parallel. In the configuration editor>usb option>connection options.
With parallels running does it see the usb in the menu under devices when you plug it in?

  • Those usb wireless internet card things ...?

My father's been pushing me to find a more budget friendly alternative to our current internet situation. We're connected with a DSL modem, it's not wireless.
He's been asking me about the usb wireless internet cards that he's seen on TV, like the ones that AT&T promote in their "find the internet everywhere" commercials.
Now, I'm finding that the service for these cards is more expensive then what we're paying now, so we probably won't be purchasing this sort of service any time soon, but I am confused as to what exactly it is.
I'm assuming that if I had one of these cards that I could get rid of the box that's connected to the wall (the modem that I connect my computer to to get the internet). But as I'm researching this I'm finding that there are "wireless internet cards" cards that allow older computers to connect to wireless modems (something that my computer can do... that most new computers can do). I would think that these wireless internet cards are different from the wireless internet devices that I'm looking for. (but maybe they're not?) I'm really confused.
If anyone could shed some light on these cards I'd be grateful Thank you!

    GfulDedFan wrote:
The wireless internet cards are different. They, for all practical purposes, are a cellphone of sorts that you attach to your computer and then it dials into the network (AT&T's, Verizon's, Sprint, etc.) and provides you with internet service just like a cellphone gives you phone service. They work just about anywhere again just like a cellphone.
AT&T's Laptop Connect cards seem to be primarily in the ExpressCard form factor, which Apple only supports in the MacBook Pro right now. They also have the older PC Cards that might work with older Apple notebooks (I think). Then there's the USB version.

This seems to be designed for business customers. I couldn't find anything suggesting that this is made available to the regular consumer market.

  • Sudden restarts while using bootable USB installer (mid-2011 iMac) - evidence of hardware problem?

    Greetings:
For a couple of years I've been suffering from an issue reported in many threads:  seemingly random shutdowns and restarts of my mid-2011 iMac.  These can happen several times a day, or there can be a gap of weeks between occurences.  I've searched the web and discussions.apple.com endlessly, and tried every conceivable solution.  I've observed no consistent pre-restart pattern in Console.  I've tried removing all unnecessary extensions and start-up programs.  Fixed permissions, repaired HDD, many of the diagnostic procedures described by LINC (superuser on this forum).  I would sometimes get temporary relief from periodic restart loops, by unplugging the computer and resetting PRAM, but this would not last long. I couldn't discern whether it is a software/conflict issue, or a hardware issue.  Have run AHT in extended looping mode, several times, and found nothing wrong.  Which caused me to keep thinking it must be a software issue.  The last thing I've tried is a clean install of Yosemite, with full HDD erase, from bootable USB.
I did this successfully, restored files from Time Machine...but then a few hours later, a series of sudden restarts began, with 4 or 5 within a couple of hours. I decided to shutdown and restart using the bootable USB installer again, and run Disk Utility from it to check the HDD for errors.
But then, while booted up from the USB (and after running Disk Utility with a normal result):  the computer suddenly turned off and restarted!  And then it rebooted again into installer mode (i.e. running off the bootable USB), and I ran Disk Utility again and ...it happened again!
So what does this tell me?  I am asking all of you for confirmation please.  I am thinking this is a strong indication that whatever the issue is causing the restarts, it is hardware based, as the system was running off the bootable USB at the time, NOT using installed operating system or software.  AND this reminded me of one other instance where the system had rebooted randomly, while I was in SAFE mode.
Would you agree that this is likely now pointing to a hardware issue?  Is power supply the likely culprit?  Or??  (and recalling that repeated AHT have showed nothing...).  Is it worth trying to fix (out of warranty)?
    thanks for any insights,
    Warren

  • Software for testing the hardware?

    Hey experts
I have an unfortunate ongoing, unresolved problem with my mac (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1429403&tstart=0). My machine has been deemed 'working' by a 3rd party repair shop, which I personally doubt tremendously.
Is there some software for download/purchase out there, that I can use to 'stress test' my machine, and furthermore, a sort of checklist to see what my MBP theoretically should be able to perform, in the various categories of performance?
I have tried searching the web, but I don't think I know the right terminology.
