Isolate linksys router from LAN while retaining internet

Hi guys,
got a bit of a problem that I've spent the past 3 hours trying to nail down. My main router is a MI424WR for my FIOS connection. It serves several computers, wired and wireless. I have an old linksys BEFW11S4 router that I am trying to use with a weaker (WEP) encryption so some devices can still use internet that would not otherwise access a WAP or WAP2 access point, and since WEP is easily crackable, I would like to isolate the WEP router (linksys in this case) from the rest of the internal network, which contains shared files)
As it stands, I have connected the WAN port of the linksys to one of the LAN ports of the MI424WR, assigned 192.168.2.1 as linksys' IP address (on a separate subnet, as the FIOS router has a 192.168.1.1 address), received a DHCP Internet address from the MI424WR, and have also enabled DHCP on the linksys router itself in order to allow client devices to get their own addresses and access the internet.
Now, based on what I've been reading, connecting the main router's (MI424WR) LAN port to the WAN port of the linksys should create two separate LAN segments, which should separate the local networks from one another. There is obviously something I'm missing here... I am getting essentially the same result as connecting the LAN port of the FIOS router to the LAN port of the linksys router. Shouldn't there be a difference between the WAN and LAN ports in this case?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.
Any suggestions?

The hookup that you did will only protect the BEFW11S4 users from the MI424WR users.   It will not protect the MI424WR users from the BEFW11S4 users.
This is because the WAN port on the BEFW11S4 only blocks unsolicited data coming into the BEFW11S4.  The WAN port does not block any outgoing data.
The solution to your problem is this:
MI424WR  ----  BEFW11S4
----  WRT54G  (or any other wireless router of your choice)
MI424WR  LAN port wired to BEFW11S4  Internet port.
MI424WR  LAN port wired to WRT54G  Internet port.
No other devices connect to MI424WR, either by wire or wirelessly.
Turn off wireless in the MI424WR.
All wired and wireless computers (and other secured devices) connect only to the WRT54G, which is using WPA or WPA2 and a strong password.
In this setup, the Internet port of the WRT54G will prevent intruders from getting into your secured network on the WRT54G, even if the BEFW11S4 is compromised.
Also the BEFW11S4 and the WRT54G should be using:
1)  different SSIDs
2)  different encryption methods
3)  completely different passwords, that are in no way similar, since someone might crack your WEP password.
4)  different channels.  There are 11 channels to pick from.   You can use any two channels, but ideally they should be 5 or more channels apart.  Channels 1, 6, and 11 usually work the best.

  • Going from LAN to the Internet...

    Hello,
I have little to no experience with networking... but what I am attempting to do is allow users to connect to a Server I have running on my home computer from "anywhere" instead of just inside my house connected to the LAN.
I've tried to search and can see that this is probably a very popular question, but I just want to ask and see if I really am on the right track.
I have a "Server" that I run on my computer, like I said, and it listens for connections on port 5000. Using ipconfig to find an IP on this computer, I came across "192.168.0.102" and have my Clients try to connect using this information. This works inside my house, like I said.
From what I've read it looks like I need to configure my router to allow connections on port 5000 from outside the LAN... or at least something like that. In my router's configuration settings (DLINK, if it makes any differnce...) I tried to setup what they call a "Virtual Server" :
"Virtual Server is used to allow Internet users access to LAN services."
    With these settings:
    Name: myserver
    Private IP: 192.168.0.102
    Protocall type: TCP
    Private Port: 5000
    Public Port: 5000
This seems to be what I want... except for that I can't seem to connect to it from outside my network. My guess is that there is a problem with the IP... but I am not sure how to go about fixing it!
Sorry for such a long message, especially since I know so little about all of this...but if anyone can give me some advice / point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks

Your router has a different IP address which is assigned to it by your ISP when it connects. This is the IP address that clients must use to connect from outside.
Be aware that your ISP's terms of service may not allow you to have servers listening for connections. Also, be aware that your router's assigned IP address may change frequently.

  • Is there any codings to isolate a system from LAN using java

This is regarding my final year project. Can anybody here tell me the way to write a coding or program to remove a system connected in LAN without any manual intervention.
Thanks in advance for all who post their valuable suggestions here

This is entirely system dependent. You need to find a command line program you can run which will do this.
e.g. On linux you can do
    ifconfig eth0 down

  • How to install app from computer, while retaining iCloud backup

    Hi,
I have a copy of an old app (ipa file saved on my Mac) that is no longer listed on iOS App store. My primary method of syncing my device is through iCloud backup, which means I never sync it with my computer and if I sync now with Computer/iTunes then the device will get overwritten... Is there a way to install this app on my device, without having to go through iTunes?
I sent the file to my Dropbox account and tried opening from there, but that doesn't work at all.
The final solution would be that I turn off iCloud backup and use iTunes, but I don't want to have my system overwritten.
    Please advise...

  • How to delete lock screen photo image from camera while retaining the default images?

    Hi,
I've recently took a picture using my camera and set it as a lock screen photo. However, I can't delete the custom lock screen photo after deleting my camera picture on my laptop. I would not know what will happen if I were to reset my entire system as I
have two separate accounts; one of the accounts is not a Microsoft account. If i were to reset my computer system, some of the applications might not be there as the laptop had a custom setting when I bought it.
How do I delete the cached photo in my computer?(The one without a Microsoft account)

    Hi,
Do we have any backup available?
If yes, we may consider to use system restore point to return to a state that could be able to change/delete the lock screen picture.

  • Please help... Linksys router and Imac help

I just switched to Mac, but I might be returning the Imac and getting a Dell or something because it's getting a little ridiculous.
My IP address on my Linksys router is not being recognized by the airport in my new Imac. It took FOREVER for me to get this to work and now it has crapped out 2 times in the last 4 days. I am about to take this new Mac back to the store and go back to a Dell.
Here is a basic description of what is happening:
When I do a diagnostic test I click on Airport and it is saying that the airport signal is fine (green dots), but it doesn't find the IP address. I select my network name that the Airport is picking up and still nothing. I can even get online by selecting a different wi-fi signal from someone that lives close to me too. It's obviously something with my Linksys router that does not work well with my Mac.
Also, even when my Mac doesn't get online, my Ps3 and 360 both still do so I know it is the computer/router that is the problem.
I try unplugging the router, modem, restarting...etc. but it just seems so wierd that it goes off like that.... It's also very annoying, because then I have to hear from my wife about that we spent $1500 on a computer that won't get online some of the time, when I can still get online on my PS3 and 360.
By the way, when I am not connected to the internet Safari will NOT let me put in the 192.168.1.1 in the address bar to get to my router settings. But I did check them from my PS3 and the "clone my MAC" thing is still enabled.
Apple's software update tells me there's no new software available for my machine, which leaves me with no idea what's causing this or how to fix it.
Any advice, solutions, or tips are greatly appreciated.
Can anyone please help me??? If this is going to be a continuous problem, I am taking the computer back and getting a new Dell or something since we mostly use the computer for the internet functions.
    Anybody please help???

    Let's double-check your iMac's AirPort settings ...
System Preferences > Network > AirPort
    o Location: Automatic
o In the left column, verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "+" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
o Verify that AirPort is "On." Click "Turn AirPort On" button if not.
o Ask to join new networks: (enabled)
o Show AirPort status in menu bar: (enabled)
Systems Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced
    AirPort tab
o Remember any network this computer has joined: (enabled)
o Disconnect from wireless networks when logging out: (enabled)
o Require Administrator password to control AirPort: (disabled)
    TCP/IP tab
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    o Configure IPv6: Off
    DNS tab
o DNS Servers: <if required, add your desired DNS server IP address(es) here>
o Search Domains: <if required, add your desired DNS Search Domain(s) here>
    WINS tab
o Enter desired WINS info or leave the defaults
    AppleTalk tab
    o Make AppleTalk Active: (disabled)

If you connect your iMac directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN ports on your Linksys router, can it access the Internet now?

  • Linksys Router Trouble!

Help!  I just got a Linksys router from a moving neighbor.  The router is a Linksys WRT54G v5. She didn't have the power adaptor, so I found one that is 12VDC 500mA and it works.  The factory resetted the device.  I always get a signal, but it has that little error sign on it.  It says my internet connection is broken.  I believe this is caused by a bad ethernet port, but I have gotten into the internet sometimes.  Help!  I have another router but it doesn't work either.  On the other router I get a signal that as no error sign and says "Internet Access" but I still cannot access the internet.  My laptop's network card works.  I prefer wireless so yeah.  Please help.

You have to login to the routers admin pages and configure the router for your ISP.  Have you done this? Instructions are on the web and on this forum if you search.

  • Airport Extreme, Linksys Router WRT54G: Internet is Impossibly Slow

I have a problem regarding wireless internet activity on my Powerbook G4. In my house, I have a Linksys Router (WRT54G) that has worked fine for other laptops (including an iBook running Airport Extreme, a Powerbook G4 running Airport, and an iMac running Airport) for many years. When I got a refurbished Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz with Airport Extreme, I found that while Airport could be configured to recognize the wireless network (with a WEP 40/128-bit encrypted key), it barely works on the computer. The signal strength is strong (the laptop is hooked up right above the Linksys router), but the Internet barely works at all. Surfing to webpages takes 10-20-30 sec to work, and often the connection seems to drop off all together. Something is clearly wrong because despite the fact that this is my fastest computer with the fastest wireless capability, it runs at a slower pace than any computer I have ever used on the web.
I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems with getting Wireless Extreme on Powerbook G4s to work with this particular (and older) model of Linksys wireless browser (WRT54G). Some Internet sleuthing led me to believe that perhaps the router firmware needs to be updated or something like that, but I haven't really found any definitive answers. If there is anything wrong on the laptop-OS-side, I have no idea. I would appreciate any pointers that you can provide!
    Thank you to all,
    Matthew

    Hi all,
Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, my problems persist.
I was able to reset my router and to configure it again on the web-based router configuration.
As per your suggestion, I tried switching the Wireless Network Mode to "G-only." Not only did this kick off my older computers on the network (an old iMac and an older Powerbook G4, both with normal airport), but it did not fix the speed problems on the new Powerbook G4/with Airport Extreme. I am back on the mixed setting now in order to get most of the computers on the network back to their old working states...
I also tried disabling my WEP encrypted key but found that this did not speed anything up at all.
I have upgraded my firmware from its previous version, v 1.41.2 (very old!), to the latest from the Linksys website: v 4.30.5. This has not helped at all either.
Is it possible that there is any setting on the Powerbook/Airport Extreme itself that is causing these problems?
Thank you all again for your help,

  • BGP route selection from LAN to WAN

    Hi,
I am going to implement a multihome internet connection to two different ISP. Before implementing in real network, I have prepared the same in GNS3 and testing. Subnet 10.x.5.0/24 should take R1 to outside from LAN and 10.x.6.0/24 should take R2 to outside from LAN.
    Below is my configuration;
HSRP between R1 and R2 towards LAN. R1 is the primary HSRP device.
R6 is the host (example) and subnet .5.0/24 and .6.0/24 are connected to R6.
R6 is sending a default route to HSRP VIP.
R1 is advertising subnet 10.x.5.0/24 and R2 is advertising subnet 10.x.6.0/24
iBGP is configured between R1 and R2
    From Internet to LAN:
From router 5 (exam.: Internet) traffic is divided in to two routers. traffic for 10.x.5.0/24 coming to R1 and traffic for 10.x.6.0/24 coming to R2. This is absolutely fine. What i expected.
    From LAN to Internet:
I need traffic from 10.x.5.0/24 should take R1 to go to internet (outside) and from 10.x.6.0/24 should take R2 to go to Inernet (outside).
I have tried with higher Local Preference on each router but is not working. All traffic from R6 (i.e. LAN) to outside is taking only R1 to go outisde.
Could any one can help on how I can share traffic for 10.x.5.0/24 & 10.x.6.0/24 divided in two Routers from LAN.
    Diagram is attached.

As answered in other post, hosts belong to LAN2 (subnet 10.x.6.0/24) can have default gateway set to R2 (R2 could be HSRP active node) now R2 will have route from eBGP (AS300) as well ibgp session (from R1). We can tweak BGP attribute to prefer eBGP session. One good option is to set weight as we want to prefer AS300 routes locally to the router and not on R1. Similarly on R1 put weight for AS200 routes.

  • Time Capsule slow internet with Linksys router

I has issues with slow internet page loads. I have a Linksys WAG325N router connect to Telstra ADSL 2 with a Time Capsule. I use two wireless network one broadcasted from Linksys and the other wireless network from the Time Capsule. When i'm connected to the time capsule i had slow internet page loads and the Time Machine backups fail.
When connected to the wireless network from the Time Capsule i get 10% to 30% packet loss when i pinged the Linksys router and 0% packet loss when i pinged the Time Capsule.
I then connected to the Linksys router then i has packet loss with i pinged the Time Capsule and 0% loss when i pinged the Linksys.
I used the Airport Utility and changed the "Ethernet WAN Port" from automatic to "10 Mbps/Full Duplex".
This seem to fix the problem. I think there is some issue with the port speed negotiation between the Linksys and Time Capsule.
    Time Capsule 7.4.2
    LinkSys V1.00.13(01)

The same thing is happening to me, exactly. Although my top speed is lower than yours (I'm on FiOS). Unplug it for a second, and you're back to normal. Otherwise, it will slowly and inexorably degrade until you have something worse than dial-up.
This is completely unacceptable, and it's far too typical of the current state of Apple's quality control and support that there is no official acknowledgment of this screamingly obvious and annoying problem, which happens every single time I use my Time Capsule, which is to say every day, and no recommended fix.
Sometimes I feel as if I could really hate this company!

  • Access a webserver on a computer that has a router from the internet.

Hi I am new to routers and wanted to get some information on how to access a webserver that is on a computer which is connected to a router. I am very confused about port forwarding. Basically lets say that the webserver is on a computer with the ip of 192.168.1.100. I want to know how to use the internet IP (either one that is auto or one that is fixed) to connect to the webserver outside of the local network from a computer on internet. I was able to do it before the router was installed. Can someone explain this to me or point me into the direction of something that is easy to understand? Thanks, Message Edited by wjriv on 03-26-2008 09:16 PM

Still having problems..   I  have configured the router to forward ports 80  (web server) to  my Linksys router address of 192.168.1.100  (which is the address for the computer that the web server is on).   I also tried DMZ to 192.168.1.100..
I use DynDns to direct my IP address...
I know it works, because I can access the router config from the Internet through port 8080...   But when I try to put in my DynDns or actual IP address  (for example: 100.110.10.201)   I enter it as follows:    http://100.110.10.201:80
But I am not able to access the web server from out side of my network.
I have also made my computer with the web server keep the IP address static.
Are there any other things that need to be configured in the router or even in the firewall of the computer?
I have noticed that this has been a major issue in different forums, but I have not been successful with a solution.
My ISP is  Bellsouth.net..   I am not sure if  they could be blocking anything..
It actually works when I remove the router from the system and just connect it directly..  so that is telling me that there is something else that needs to be configured on the router.
Can anyone help me or direct me to the solution?
    This is really frustrating....
    Thanks..

  • Linksys Router, Can't Access Internet

I'm trying to hook up a Linksys router to my mom's iMac so I can get wireless on my Powerbook. I followed the instructions, and everything seemed to be ok - all the proper lights are green, the network pref says it is connected to the internet, my powerbook is picking up the signal - but I can't actually load anything on the net (except the linksys registration module I get when typing in the router's IP). I tried linksys tech support, but they only stated the obvious and punctuated every other sentence with the fact that they only have limited support for Macs.
It's especially frustrating since I have to disconnect everything to actually get on the internet to find help! Argh. Any suggestions?

The router is pretty smart, and will sync up with the modem without difficulty.
Since you have internet access, go to www.linksys.com. Click on support, techincal support, and easy answers. Click search by answer id. Here are two you want to look at:
    #759 Setting up wireless security
#187 Setting up WPA on WRT54G
If you also search by phrase on 'setting up' and the name of your service provider, ie, might be Verizon for DSL or Comcast for cable. That will bring up a instructions for your service provider.
As Sig stated, the WRT54G is basically plug and play. However, you do need to enable security. 3 recommendations:
    1) Disable SSID broadcast. You'll tell your PB the SSID, but others don't need to know it.
    2) Protect your wireless information by using WPA Personal security, as WEP can be broken in 15 minutes. Use a long pass phrase which includes special characters like any of those above the numbers on the keyboard. Longer and complex is more secure. I had difficulty with WPA2 personal, as my PB would not connect coming out of sleep, however WPA Personal works fine.
    3) Prevent others from sharing your internet connection by enabling mac filtering (use your systems airport id or in the system profiler go to network and use the mac address). That way, you only allow your machine, or others by choice, to use your connection.
That should get your router securely setup. Then on your PB connect by entering the network name (the router SSID), the type of security (WPA Personal), and your pass phrase.

Hi Kathy,  my name is Johnnatan and I am part of the Small business Support community.
If you have an old firmware it would be a good idea to go out to Cisco.com and see if there is any firmware updates. I have looked on the site for you and I see the latest firmware is:2.0.2.1
    http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=282414016&softwareid=282487380&release=2.0.1.3&rellifecycle=&relind=AVAILABLE&reltype=all
You can also try to reset your device to its factory settings, to reset your router please take a object that has a point and hold the reset button in on the back for "atleast" 30 seconds until the lights on the front to start flashing.
About Mac address, you can map a Static IP with a specific mac address, You can folllow these steps in order to configure it.

  • EA6300 - Cascading the Linksys router to another router (LAN-LAN) - Does not Bridge built in Wifi AP

    Regarding:
    http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=3733#
Cascading the Linksys router to another router (LAN-LAN)
The Bridge mode function on the EA6300 does not bridge the Wifi AP radio to the network.
The ethernet ports are bridged, and the router can see network devices and wifi devices connected to itand ping devices in both directions , but Wifi clients connecting to the unit running in bridge mode are not "bridged" to the network.
    ~
Using the built in webpage of the router, all devices can be pinged.
Ethernet RJ-45 devices plugged into it can ping the unit and pull up the units config webpage, but not ping wifi clients connected to it.
Wfii devices connected to its access point radio, can pull up the units config webpage, but not ping ethernet RJ-45 devices connected to it.
If there is a bridge, then the bridge is broken in half and not functional.
    ~
All devices are set with IPs on the same subnet,  192.168.2.x
    ~
I have a Netgear router in Bridge mode, and it works fine, connecting the wifi access point and RJ-45 ethernet clients together like it should be, so I know how Bridge mode... should work...
But it doesn't on this unit, it is not working completely out the factory door.   It will bridge one Router to another via the RJ-45 ethernet ports, but its own AP radio is no longer bridged and connected (like when running in NAT
Note that doing cascading  using NAT as described under "Cascading the Linksys router to another router (LAN-WAN)" works fine.

    Hi,
There's no WLAN bridge feature on the new Linksys Smart Wifi routers. You might also like to check and review these articles about Bridge Mode:
