Issue: Password needed - networking

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the proper place in the forums for this question, but here goes anyway:
We have a Windows Server 2003 set up to host an applet program over the internet. This applet is designed to access and display a certain type of file (let's say a .xer file). By giving the Internet Guest Account read permissions on a folder containg all the needed .xer files, the client applet can access them just fine. Each .xer file is a script that is interpreted by the applet program. However, we discovered that a user could also download the .xer files by just typing in the proper URL in the browser. We don't want the user to do this, because he/she can then see the enitre file, not just what the applet is supposed to interpret. So, part one of our problem is that we want the apple tot be able to access these .xer files, but we don't want them to be accessible through the browser.
To try and solve this, we attempted to deny all permissions to the folder with the .xer files, for just the Internet Guest Account. This solves the problem of the browser being able to access them from the client side, but a new problem appeared. Now whenever the applet tries to access a .xer file (via a http:// request), a dialog box appears entitled "Password Needed - Networking". This box also appears when an .xer file is trying to be downloaded from the browser. This is where it get's even more interesting. From the browser, this box requires a proper username and password for the user to download the file. From the applet, no username or password is needed. In the applet, we can just click ok without filling out the fields, and the applet executes the .xer script. Thus, part two of our problem is how do we get rid of this "Password Needed - Networking" box in the applet, but keeping it for the browser?
Any help that anyone might give in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

There are GUI forums where questions about browsers are probably best asked.
There are security forums where questions about SSL are probably best asked.

  • Getting 'Password Needed - Network' dialog box

I have a site on IIS 5.0 that is using Basic and integrated NT authentication. The site contains a page that loads an applet. Prior to upgrading to JVM 1.4.1 everything worked fine - a NT login box would pop up on connecting to the site - after a successful login the page and applet would load. After the upgrade, when the page with the applet loads I am presented with a second login box - "Password Needed - Network".
I've tried excluding the site address from the proxy server using both the IE settings and the JVM settings, but no luck. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi, this is what I did and how it looks;
After reading the posts I contacted NetAway, (they are a roaming pay as you go ISP, you can use local dial-up numbers world wide), they told me to type my user ID with the addition of @netaway.com. It isn't an email address although I can see why you ask. The ID with password accesses the Netaway website to check your available minutes and to buy more.
In the Network Dialog Box (under System Preferences) the password still shows 24 dots/characters, my Netaway password is only 8, I only entered the 8 characters but after pressing 'apply' the password field changed from 8 to 24 characters?
The Internet Connect dialog box (was automatically filled) shows 10 characters?
After pressing 'Connect' despite the password fields (see above) both looking wrong I'm able to dial-up, authenticate account and successfully connect!
I can see this seems illogical, as a new mac user I sometimes struggle to understand how certain areas of OSX work!
Please feel free to ask if this is unclear.

  • Password Needed - Networking basic authentication twice??

Why do I have to authenticate twice??? Using basic authentication, IIS asks me my username and password but then I also get another popup from Sun JVM asking to login again! I've seen other posts on this topic with no solutions yet. Anyone have any idea? Sun, are you working on fixing this issue? I'm so sad that MSJVM will be discontinued. It was much faster and less problematic.

Nope, no answer yet. Until Sun addresses this problem, the only suggestion I can make is not to use the Sun JVM.
You can disable it in Internet Explorer by choosing:
    1. Tools
    2. Internet Options...
    3. Advanced
    4. Uncheck (disable): Use Java 2 v1.4.2_04 for <applet> (requires restart)
    5. Under Microsoft VM, should already be checked but if not check(enable): JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart)
    Other reference: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/switchvm.jsp
Of course this is only a temporary workaround for now, but hopefully Sun will fix this before Microsoft completely ends their support for MSJVM on December 31, 2007.

    http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/faq.asp
New Microsoft products will not have MSJVM included so in that case you will need to find, download, and install msjavx86.exe (might be gambling on security if not the most updated version, oh well).
Personally, I don't care which company's JVM software I have to use, I just want one that completely works, is fast, and not problematic.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Progmatically save to password protected network folder

I am looking to save a file to a password protected network folder.  I tried using the standard Write Text.vi to see if a dialog would pop up, but it did not.  There is not an ftp server running on the networked computer, so I dont think that will work.
The IT department directions to the folder say:  Go to Start> Run and enter url \\computername\folder\subfolder\...  and a dialog will appear to enter username and password.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

That simply reiterates what the IT department originally told the poster to do, except that you're using the administrative share.

To do this you will need to delve into the Windows API. You can also use .NET to perform impersonation. Most of the examples that are on the internet are based on .NET 1.1 and it's probably easier to simply create yourself a custom class that you can call using a single method rather than trying to put all the .NET code into LabVIEW. An example of using impersonation (though there are lots of them) can be found here.

  • Trouble Connecting To Password Protected Networks

Hello. I'm having trouble with the wireless side of life.
I'm in Japan and I'm trying to connect to YahooBB wireless with my macbook. Everytime I enter the password, there is a message saying the connection has failed. I have also tried to connect wirelessly at work. I enter their password and I get the connection failed message. The only place I can connect is at the Apple Store which doesn't require a password.
Could there be a reason as to why I can't connect with a password protected network? I correctly enter the passwords over and over again.
Excuse me for such a silly question (I'm new to Mac) but...do I need to purchase Airport Express to connect at work or with YahooBB? I've always assumed there was no need.
    Thanks for your help.

What's the difference between hex and ASCII?
It is only how the information is presented. Humans can remember the ASCII string easier. The underying bits are the same. You can use tables like this one to convert back and forth between the ASCII characters and their hexadecimal representation.
If you can, the best wireless encryption to use is WPA2. If you can't use WPA2, use WPA.
128 bit WEP is very strong and adequate in most circumstances.
64 bit WEP (sometimes called 40 bit WEP) is very weak and should be avoided.
The type of encryption needs to be set on the wireless router (base station). Your Mac will then present you the correct dialog box to enter the password.

  • Image Ultra Builder 3.x issue with T61 Network Driver load

    Hello,
I am having issues with a Network deployment of an image on a T61 (7659-12U) During the intial boot up phase with the Network Boot disk that was created from IUB, I receive and error 1231 - The Network Location cannot be reached..  I am currently using IUB for deployment of A31, T40/42 as well as the T60 model line. None of these loads are having the problem.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated.
    Thank-you in advance.

    Hi,
IUB 4.01 is using WINPE 2.0<Vista based> and IUB 3.1 was using WINPE 1.0/1.1<XP Based>.
This has nothing to do with the actual image deployment. It's just that the WINPE looks more like
Vista. And this is why the method changed after you updated from 3.0/3.1 to 4.00/4.01.
To answer your questions from before:
    1) Does updating IUB to version 4.01 still allow me to deploy Windows XP ?
Yes, it's still supported and possible.
    2) Where on the boot CD should the new driver files be located. I took this to be PREBOOT\DRIVERS ?
As the new IUB is using WINPE 2.0, the best location for the NIC drivers is the file :
    tvtos\winpe.wim
    However, this is my advice.!
For my Image deployment I'm no longer using the CD for network deployment. I'm using USB key which gives me more options for the image deployment and the automatization of the deployment process.
However, if you want to use CD for network deployment, then you can do it in following way.
!!!NOTE: this is not the offical way, nor the supported way, but trust me, that it's working like charm !!!
    - go to your repository location %repositorylocation%\modules
    - find the file called "Z633003A.TVT" and open it using your fav zip application
    - after you open this file, go to following location: tvtos\
    - extract the "winpe.wim" and using WAIK unmount this file and add the NIC drivers into this .wim file
    - after all the drivers are in the winpe.wim file, just copy it back to the "Z633003A.TVT" file and create a new Deployment CD
How to add NIC driver using WAIK:
This is prety easy step, but for more info, check following link:
    http://www.svrops.com/svrops/articles/winvistape2.htm
As I described earlier, I'm using USB key for Network image deployment, so I have not done it this way, but I have done it a bit simplier.
    Here are my steps:
    - created a Distribution USB key <suing the same method, that you are using when you create a Network deployment CD, but instead of a CD I select my USB key>
    - once the USB key was created successfully I unmount the "tvtos\winpe.wim" file and add all the NIC dirvers into it
This is all that I have done.
Yes, of course there are couple other steps, that I do, like modifying the BCD file, adding other WINPE files, diagnostics and other deployment tools, however, this is not realy a part of IUB, I'm using it for my WDS server and other deployment tools, that I need to use. If you know, what I mean, then you surely understand, that it's a live safer to have everything on one USB key, then on multiple CD where I need to search throught all of then to find the correct CD.
Let me know, whether this method is more suitable for you.
As described above, this is not the realy official/supported way, but it's working for sure.

is it possible to have multiple time machines on the same password protected network?  any insight would be helpful  thanks

Youshould set one of them up to extend the wireless network. That one would not need an Ethernet connection and would allow your network to cover a broader area.

My lap top will connect, but does not connect to the internet and does not come up and ask for the sight password. how do What setting are incorrect in the security system that will not allow me to connect to the internet?

Sounds like you are trying to use the '''local area network''' that is provided ''[*and owned]'' by the RV park. You'll need to get the Username and Password for network access from the park manager ''[or another 'camper']''. The cost of using their network might be included in the daily fee, or it may be an extra cost / optional service at some RV parks.
Probably doesn't make a difference whether tyou would be using a "wireless" {WiFi} connection or a "plug-in" connection, the "local area network" would work similar on either.
Now, if you are using a cell phone via a Bluetooth connection to your laptop, that is something completely different ....

everytime i start my mac it asks for "Select a certificate or enter a name and password for network" and when i'll close it and reopen it, it still asks.
can somebody help with what am i suppose to do?

If you are currently showing WiFi status in the menu bar, you would see this icon:
If you see that near the top right corner, click it and choose "Join other network" from the drop down list.
If you do not see that icon, then go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu bar), ciick "Network", then choose "WiFi" and choose something (probably "Assist me" at the bottom) there.

P.S. I have not taken any backup of my iPhone on itunes..
Please help me sort out this issue..

Recovery mode doesn't mean that all your data is already lost. You only lose your data if you restore it.
When you plug the phone is into iTunes hold down the home button. iTunes may then give you the option JUST to update the software first. This should not get rid of any data.
However, if iTunes is only giving you the option to RESTORE and update, then you will lose your data I'm afraid.
    Hope that helps!

  • Is there any way to set up an Airport Extreme that had been previously used in a password protected network and the password was not provided by the seller ?

    Background -
My original Airport Extreme Base Station failed (would not connect to the modem). I purchased a similar, if not identical base station on eBay. Unfortunately, the purchased base station apparently was used in a password protected network. For what it is worth, my son gave me a Netgear wireless router, but it leaves a lot to be desired. For one thing, I use to keep the cable modem in the basement along with the Airport base station, with a printer connected to the USB port. The Netgear device does not have a USB port and also requires that the computer (in this case, the eMac) used to set up the network be connected to one of the ethernet ports. This meant I had to move the cable modem and router into my bedroom, a very undesirable situation. It then occurred to me that the original Airport base station Wi-Fi function might still work, and tested this hypothesis and sure enough, the Wi-Fi function does indeed work I currently have both base stations powered on, with my printer connected to the original. Both base stations appear under my Network icon, but neither Airport Utility 5.4.2 or Airport Administrator Utility 4.2 see either base station. I can select the original base station as my network, connect to the printer or even my other computers, but as soon as I try to select the new one, it asks for the password. I would like to somehow reset this base station and then redefine the network name and encryption.

I would suggest that you perform a "soft" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) that you just got from eBay. This type of reset will temporarily (5 minutes) disable both the base station and wireless security passwords so that you can access it with the AIrPort Utility to make the necessary changes.
