Issues importing tapes into FCPX

Hi. I have tried importing some miniDV tapes for the first time into FCPX (latest version). I have had a number of issues:
Tape number 1 - Importing the video directly into an event (rather than creating an archive) seemed to split up the shots on the tape incorrectly, and dropped some frames. Creating a camera archive worked for that tape. However when I tried to import the clips from the newly created archive, FCPX crashed, and I had to open again. This time round, I could import the clips into the event from the archive, and they were split up into shots correctly.
Tape number 2 (which is one long recording without timecode breaks), FCPX split the first minute where some titles dip to black into seperate clips. It should have been captured as one long clip. I decided to try and create an archive again. Second time round, it correctly created an archive with one long clip and I imported into an event!
Tape number 3 - again it split some opening titles which dip to black into seperate clips in the archive. I haven't tried this one a second time yet.
Tape number 4 - creating an archive reached the end of the tape displayiong the 'end of tape' message. When I clicked ok, FCPX crashed. When it opened again, the archive wasn't displayed and I could not open the archive (it appeared greyed out). I am currently trying this one again.
Has anyone got any tips on getting around these problems? I like the camera archive idea, and the way it splits shots up (when appropriate) and logs them according to the recording date and time). I wish you could till it to not split up the clips also. I am worried about how it will cope with my VHS collection, when I connect via a AV-DV adaptor (like the Canopus ADVC55). Will these be split up into seperate clips every time there is a dip to black, or some noise on the picture? Also, will it stop creating the archive after the 3 hour tape has come to an end, or will it keep archiving a blank screen? (in FCP7 there was a limit capture option, so I could tell it to stop after 2hr and 10mins for example).
Sorry there are a lot of questions here! Any advice would be appreciated.

When I capture in Quicktime Player 7 this is the info:
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions
When I import that clip into FCPX, it is playing audio through LEFT and RIGHT channels.
The same clip when captured in FCPX directly (not using a camera archive) also plays audio through both LEFT and RIGHT channels.
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions
When using the camera archive feature in FCPX, there is only sound on the LEFT channel (nothing coming through right speaker). Although this time, the sound is extremely faint even on the LEFT channel - the same clip is fine when captured as above. I also get this faint audio when playing it back in FCP7
DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Unused, 48.000 kHz
I think this is a specific problem with the Camera Archive feature when archiving miniDV tapes. It's a shame, since I've capture 20 already!

when importing files into fcpx from go pro hero2, some are importing as .mov and some as .mp4. when making a multi cam clip it will only add one type, if you try and add the other it says camera clip cannot be processed. need to figure out why it randomly imports differently, or how to add different file tyoes to multi cam.

here is one that is imported and stays .mp4. the specs are same as original file before import.
here is one that has changed somehow during import. specs on original file are same as above, but once it is imported it changes to this in event folder, and others randomly keep the above specs.

  • Which is the better way to import videos into FCPX?

Hello to all. I have recently purchased an iPhone 5 and while importing videos, I could import them directly via the camera import of FCPX which was open at that time.
Later, when I tried to import a few stillshots, I found that I could not do it directly with FCPX importing into an event: reason being FCPX would not read the still photos. I learnt from the internet that one could import photos/videos from iPhone either through iPhoto or image capture. I tested out both of them and learnt that I could get my phoyos into FCPX via either of them.
My question is this: is it better for me to import videos into FCPX directly or to first save them on an external HD via image capture? Will there be any effect in the quality of the video in these two different methods of import?
    Thanks in advance.

You have already pocketed my thanks in advance Tom! The early bird catches the worm! Awake so early? Have a great day.

  • Importing tape into Imovie 11. How do I import all the clips as one long clip?

How do I import all the clips as one long clip? I have 45 min of footage and I want it as one long take I can edit in Final Cut ProX. When I import, all the clips are split up when the scene cuts. I just want the 45 min in one long video.

iMovie will import the tape as if it is direct from the camera. It will sense the scene breaks and put all the clips in chronological order.
If you want to import it as one long clip, I suggest you load the tape into the app that you edited the tape with. Then export it out as a QuickTime movie in the DV codec. You can import this MOV file into FCPX or iMovie.

  • How can I digitizing HDV tapes into FCPX

I am about to upgrade my Mac laptop and FCP, but I need to know how I can import (digitze) my HDV tape based video into FCPX. The camera has firewire 400, but I have used a firewire 400 to 800 cable to digitize into Final Cut Studio. What is the best way to do it?

If you get the Retina MBP, you will need to get a FW–Thunderbolt adaptor to use with your 4 pin to 9 pin cable.

  • I have material shot on a new camera in 16x9.  When I import it into FCPX the media is "squished" into 4x3.  How can I get it to look right?

    I have material shot on a new camera.  It's a Panasonic AG-HPX250EJ.
According to the clip properties of the media on the camera the footage was shot 16x9 at a frame rate of 50i
    The format is DV25_420
The problem is that when I connect the camera to the iMac via a USB cable and attempt to import the media into FCPX (I'm running version 10.0.1) it displays as 4x3.
    What am I doing wrong?
Needless to say I have a deadline looming for the edit and I'm rather tearing my hair out.

If problem persists after importing via FW
Select the clips in the event browser and in the inspector select INFO.
Ensure that the View bottom Left is set to SETTINGS.
You should be able to change the way FCPX interprets the clips via Anamorphic Override.

  • Audio issues importing MPEG2 into PE7

    Hi guys,
I have some AVCHD files (MTS) that for some reason are not handled well by PE7. It takes forever to drag them onto the timeline and then don't even think about editing them. Even after rendering. [As an aside all of my M2TS AVCHD files work perfectly well in PE7 just not the MTS files for some reason].
So I converted the MTS files to MPEG2 using Kyoto Soft Free HD Convertor software V1.7. The files converted fine to MPEG2 and when I open them in a standard windows video viewer they play perfectly well both video and audio.
Here's the catch though. I imported them into PE7 and then dragged them onto the timeline. The video plays fine but the audio is crazy its just very fast gobbly **** (hard to describe). It sounds like an out of control electric guitar on steriods if that helps!
Anyway, I'm happy the video can be imported and it doesn't slow down PE7 like the MTS files did but would like to know how I can get the audio to work perfectly as well.
    thanks
    Bryan

Actually, the Lumix shoots in a number of formats. Assuming you're shooting in AVCHD, it actually shoots in AVCHD Lite, 1280x720, and you should ensure that you've selected that as your project setting when you set up your Premiere Elements project.
But the bigger challenge is that this cam shoots in 60p, a format that is not supported by Premiere Elements or any other consumer video editing programs. It does not appear from the online specs that you ahve the option of switching it to 60i. If this is the case, you may not be able to work with video from this camera in Premiere Elements.
That's a problem with Panasonic's decision to use that format rather than Premiere Elements, unfortunately.
Even Kyotesoft's video converter will likely have problems working with it.

  • Issues importing word into indesign and keeping notes/superscripts

    Hi
I have a job coming up where I will need to import word documents into indesign that come from various sources.
I did some web surfing and discovered I should be able to do it by placing the word document into my template. It seemed to work when I first tried it, but I have now discovered that only the first few notes have from through (first 14 to be precise). Then the numbers disappear (and are replaced by soft returns) until note 33 where they jump back in. But of course this starts at the next number missing, so in this case 15. Which of course means all the numbers are out of order and so need to be fixed.
I would just input or fix manually but as I have 15 stories place and format and the first one has 95 notes... I am hoping to find a less time consuming solution.
I am guessing it is something in how the author has edited the word document, but I truly have no idea.
Any suggestions as best way to overcome this? Ideally something I can ask the authors to fix. Or is there something in the import options?
I am about to get EXTREMELY desperate with this issue.
    Thanking you call in advance.
    Cheers
    Nikola

OK after some more web seraching I have tried saving as and RFT file and that seemed to work. So fingers crossed.
    Using these settings:
If anyone knows why it happened please let me know as it would be most useful.

  • Issues importing photos into lightroom 5.6

Hello All,  I would very much appreciate any assistance in figuring out my issue of not being able to import new photos after having used LR for years with almost 6000 photos in my LR catalogue.  It looks like the images are coming in and then it gives me a number of the images (all of them) that are not able to import.  I tried using a new, empty catalogue as well as importing my old photos into a new catalogue, and in both cases had the same problem.  I am shooting with a Fuji XT1 both RAW and JPG and none of the images come in, yet they had been importing with no issue up until recently. I tried uploading the photos from a card reader, then I copied the images onto my desktop, tried that, and then I put the disc directly into the slot on my Macbook Pro, and it hasn't worked from any of those sources.  The only thing that is different is that I recently purchased a new Apple thunderbolt monitor, but I disconnected that and tried to upload directly onto my Macbook Pro and it still wouldn't import the new photos.  Could you kindly offer me any suggestions of what I might be able to do to remedy this situation?  Thanks!

When I try to import my images, both RAW and jpeg from my Fujixt1, both from the card reader and directly from the slot on my computer, I initially see them as thubnails in Lightroom and it appeast like they are being imported, but after the import bar is finished, no lonager seeing any of the photos.  then an error message comes up it also says:  "could not copy files to the requested location" I have not had this problem when I had an earlier version of Lightroom. Any specific help in getting these files into Lightroom would be must appreciated.  Is there an update that will help make this issue go away.  It used to be so easy to just upload directly.  Thanks!

  • Issues importing MPP into Primavera

    Hi,
there are two issue sthat were noted post impor of plan into Primavera-
    1. Post import, for activities that have Activity Ids greather than 99, the one marked 100 is listed first in the order. So i have to mark the one as 100, i renamed it to 99A.
    2. Post import, the Activity Type comes 'Resource dependent' by default. While import, Primavera should have asked what value etc.
    regards

    1. You should renumber the Microsoft Project schedule as P6 will put them numerically going left to right so that 10 comes before 9.
    Example:
    001
    002
    010
    011
    099
    100
or just start at 1000 as P6 does.
    2. Again change the Microsoft schedule so the activities are not be effort drvien check the box to ignore resource calendars.

  • I am having an issue importing CDs into iTunes.

When I import a CD into iTunes, certain songs are separated into a different "folder".  It seems as though they are songs where another artist is involved in the song.  I want the entire CD in one place.  Can anyone help?

If you have an album with multiple artists, but you want them grouping together in folder (and also within the 'Artists' section on iPod) - ensure that the tag of 'Album Artist' is the same for everysong - for instance "Various Artists"
This means that itunes will still keep the album together both in its source folder AND in iTunes even though you may have a "Hits 2012" album for instance.

  • Issues importing pictures into the project I want

When I import a photo it imports into the project I want but also creates a second "new" project in the same folder, how do I get it to only import where I want?  I appreciate any help.

    Hi Ulrich
The picture size does not matter, but rather a setting in Administration > System Initialization > General settings > Display TAB. On this tab you will find a setting with a drop down called "Ext. Image Processing". Set this to full and the full quality of any pictures will be used, but of course resized to fit the field. Bear in mind that images are not embedded in the tables but only the file name of the image is stored in the table.
    Kind regards

  • Issue importing ESS into CMS

I am having difficulty checking in the SCA file for ESS.  I have set up the Domain, Track, etc. using the scenario 2+ steps.  I've added the software component to the track.  However, when I go to the transport studio and try to check in my component is not available in the drop-down.  Do I have to move the ESS.sca into the CMS_CBS folder to make it available for check in?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Import iMovie HD file into FCPX

Oh, I hope we can figure this one out.  I've got several iMovie HD 6.0.4 projects I'd like to import into Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3.
It appears that they don't work together.  I see that FCPX has an Import iMovie Project option, however it's not recognizing my iMovie HD projects for import at all.  They are all greyed out.  I also see that FCPX has an Import XML option, however iMovie HD 6.0.4 does not have an Export to XML option.
I'm willing to try it all.  If I have to import the old iMovie HD projects into newer versions of iMovie to get FCPX to recognize it I will.  Has anyone any insights or experience in making this happen successfully?

Well, shoot!  It was a good effort, but saving my iMovie HD 6.0.4 Media folder to my Desktop, then importing it into FCPX 10.0.3, as you probably figured, only imported the audio clips and the video clips.  I have these iMovie projects so spliced up with sound clips anchored everywhere, I really need that continuity.
I've instead decided to remove all my transitions in the iMovie project, export the project to a .mov file and import that into FCPX 10.0.3.  That way the music will still be anchored, I can split the audio and video, and add my video transitions back in.  It appears that's the best solution for this situation.  Unless you have other ideas.
AppleMan1958, I unfortunately do not have iMovie 11.  I'm not sure that would solve the issue?  Thank you for helping me, all.

  • Odd frames added to start of audio export from LPX when imported into FCPX

Running into a weird issue exporting audio out of Logic Pro (10.0.6) for import into FCPX (10.1.1) - Logic is introducing extra frames (varies between 2 to 4 frames) at the front of exported audio, becomes detectable when imported back into FCPX.
I do a lot of work where I sync music performances on camera that are recorded in audio and MIDI, and have to deliver remixed audio with picture AND a .MID file that all sync. Workflow used to be shoot video on a C100 and another DSLR with either an audio feed or live mic patched to the camera, while Logic recorded the MIDI performance and any ambient audio via separate mics and pres. Shoot always had some kind of "slated" start marker on camera, in camera audio, and in Logic. Camera edits were edited in FCPX, exported as a Quicktime with the "slate" for a start marker, then audio and MIDI handled in Logic.
This always used to work thru to last fall, when we took a hiatus.
Upon resuming some final shooting in the last two weeks, our audio edits are always running 2-4 frames behind FCPX. It's a consistent offset for an entire export (so there's no drift, no jitter within the files - but the slate tones might be 2 frames and 17 subframes behind and the whole audio file runs behind.) Another export might be 3 frames 2 subframes behind. Always kind of random in the amount of drift - but never more than 4 frames.
Tried a test where I imported just the camera audio in Logic as an extracted audio track, then exported same audio file back to the Quicktime but left the original audio in the video - Logic's exported audio ran behind sync from the original.
Obviously, I'm paying attention to frame rates, sample rates, etc.
As a test, I exported an XML out of FCPX, imported it into Logic, performed some edits, and used the File>Export>Project to FinalCut Pro XML - so everything matched across the board. Opened the export in FCPX - audio ran behind sync again.
If it was just audio I was concerned about, I'd just line it up in FCPX and call it done - but my exported MIDI file NEEDS to be in sync with the picture AND the audio... and wasting time calculating the Logic offset error is a huge detour from getting this work done quickly.
I thought maybe there could be a plug-in issue, but it happened even in the extracted audio from the Quicktime with no plug-ins in any of the signal chains.
    Any ideas?

    Well… here's a clunky workaround.
It's either a problem with the exported FCPX-XML or the way Logic Pro X interprets the XML.
The simple test here was to put a clip in the FCPX timeline and export it as an AIFF and then export an XML too.
Import the XML into Logic, then import the AIFF as a new track. By default the Logic project is 120BPM. By analyzing the xml-based track and the aiff track, the xml track has an added 164 ticks to the beginning of the referenced video-audio.
Move the playhead to zero, zoom in to the timeline and drag the tick field to 164 then blade all your tracks, then click/drag the bladed tracks to zero. Voila!
It seems to only affect the first audio file. So for example, when I have 10 video clips in my FCPX timeline, only the first audio clip has the added 164 ticks.
Now on to the next challenge…
It's not enough to just de-compound your clips because L and J cuts get referenced to the VIDEO, not the audio underneath.
So… In FCPX you MUST select each clip and choose Break Apart Clip Items from the Clip Menu. Perhaps this is old news but thought I'd mention it here in case others were having problems.
Let's hope Apple steps up their xml game and realizes that when I choose export XML-Audio from the xml popup menu… I want it to send the duration of the audio, not the duration of the attached video.
Ergh! Well… as my friends say… "We're still in the stone age with all this technology."
    Happy editing all!
