It's hard to hear caller

When I first set up my iphone5s a few days ago I made test calls and they sounded fine. When I answered a call today, I could barely hear the caller and when I called out after that, I had the same problem. I tried looking through the settings to see if I could stumble across an answer and I was unsuccesful. Does this sound like a settings issue or did my phone speaker just break?

What causes "low" or hard to hear calls?

Well, this is a first post for landline question.
First I would like to say, I have local calls with Verizon and long distance with Att&t. We have 2 providers because well.. it was set up like that almost 20 years and we decided just to leave it as is. I think there is only 2 major providers here in the state of RI, Cox Communications and Verizon.
Comcast used to show ads here, but one year just disappared and I don't see Att advertising locally for internet service here either. I think Att became just a wireless company in this state.
The question I have is that both Incoming and outgoing calls have been a mixed bag over these past few years. The calls all do go through and we do have a dial tone. The problem is with the calls itself. Sometimes it would be to quiet so that we can't hear the other person on the other side or they can't hear us clearly. We don't get much calls nor do we really make to many calls. It is just a number for friends and relatives to contact us. Sometimes hanging up and redialing fixes the problem.
Does anyone know what causes a call to be to soft or quiet on one end? its not a huge problem and it happens only a few times I would say about 10% chance. It hasn't become a problem yet, just becomes annoying when it does happen. Especially since we don't use the phone that much.
What we tried:
1. Using different phones throughout the house during the problems and all phones seem to have the problem. Tried both cordless and wired connected phones quality remains bad so we tell them we will call them back or they should call again and that normally fixes the problem. There was one time I remember it didn't work but assumed since they were dialing from a cellphone it was just a cellphone problem on there end.
Also.. No one in the house hold owns a cellphone of any kind, so if anyone wonders why we still have a copper land line. It is because we found no use for cellphones yet.
I would also like to add this house was made in the late 1930's, there is no NID box anywhere in the house. I have tried to look for it but it does not seem to exsist. It looks like it comes from the pole direclty to the house Which leads over to the electic panel where all the circuit breakers are. Some of the wiring looks bad so I don't even bother touching it. At one point the previous owners had a alarm system on the basement windows and it even has a fire alarm on the side of the house interestingly...
For people who have experience with phone systems... Somewhere in the basement there is a ringer. When we get a phone call. The basement litterly starts rining like a phone is connected somewhere, even if no phone is connected to the basment. Does anyone know exactly what that box or what device causes rining? I probally should find a way to dial the home phone to figure out where it is coming from. That thing is loud as heck if I can find it I would disconnect it or at least find a volume to turn down the ringer.
The basement is filled with a bunch of old wiring from an old alarm system that the previous owner had installed 20+ years ago. When we moved in we saw all this disconnected wire and all these wires rerouted.

I had my GENIUS appointment today. They did a couple of tests by plugging my iPhone into a macbook and both came back without showing problem. However as the genius was working with my phone he ran into the same problem with 3G and I had taken some screen shots showing full signal strength but unable to make a call, failure to send mms, and internet unable to connect, so he switched out my phone for a new one as I am still under warranty for another 3 months.
Make sure you backup your data and restore your phone as a new phone before going in to see a Genius, otherwise they may choose to try that process first and do some diagnotistic tests before being able to switch it out, and that can take up to 4 days.
Best guess by the Genius was that it was a hardware problem with the internal cellular antenna. He also recommended I get a new (free) SIM card from AT&T which I did (kiosk was in same mall)
So bottom line...if your 3G is messed up, make an appointment with Apple Genius. Thanks to all who tried to help, but mostly thank you apple Genius for great customer service.

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
1. Increase the volume during the call.
2. Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver. If you're using a protective case or display film, remove it and try again.
3. Make sure nothing is plugged into the headphone jack or the dock connector.
4. Check the receiver opening to see if it is clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
5. Try another location with better signal. If the audio issue happens only when on a call, it could be due to the location.
6. If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or a car kit, try turning off Bluetooth on your device. Learn more about troubleshooting Bluetooth connections.
7. Restart the iPhone.
8. Make sure your device is up to date.
9. If the issue is not resolved after restoring the iPhone software, contact Apple Support.
If your issue persists after attempting these steps, please follow the last step to contact Apple Support.

The answer appears to be no. Apple TV uses QuickTIme to play videos, and QuickTime has very poor support for subtitles.
According to the Apple website about Leopard (see this page http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/features/accessibility.html ) Leopard will come with QuickTime 7.2 which happens to be also the current version for Tiger, in other words it will be same (i.e. equally useless).
There is a plugin for QuickTime called Perian which does a reasonably good job of adding subtitle support to QuickTime Player but this feature will not work for Apple TV or Front Row.
There is a program you can buy called SubMerge, which will burn subtitles in to the video image (so they can then never be turned off). Of course you also have to get hold of the subtitles.
Until (if) Apple dramatically improve the support for subtitles in QuickTime, things like Apple TV, iPhone, and Front Row will all be equally limited. Also there is no point Apple putting subtitles in videos on the iTunes Store since they cannot be played via QuickTime.
While it is not related to your question, QuickTime is equally pathetic at supporting surround sound, and multiple audio tracks (e.g. for different languages or directors commentary), again there is no point Apple providing this on the iTunes Store (for films) until QuickTime can support it.
VLC, and even gasp Windows Media Player (for Windows) can do all of this.

Feature for people hard of hearing

Via the sky app and the wifi enabled sky box the audio of the program on could be streamed back to your device (phone, tablet etc). A person hard of hearing could then listen to the program using the earphones on the phone or tablet and adjust the volume accordingly. The other people in the room just listen at normal volume. I just want to be able to dicipher most of the calls I get - not the volume as I can adjust my phone. It is a constant problem and if any caller has an accent, regretably, forget it, can`t understand what they are saying

I have an iphone 5. Most of the calls I make the person has a hard time hearing me to the point where I can no longer use speaker phone. But I can hear that other person come in just fine.

Sorry you misunderstood my question let me rephrase my question. I was telling you the color and make of my phone and was wanting to know if their was anybody having any issues with this as well. It could be a problem with iphone 5 or just an issue with mine alone.I was trying to see if their were any troubleshooting steps I could try to rectify the problem I am having.

I am about to try a master reset but how do i backup my contacts from my address book? Does itunes do that when i backed up the rest of the stuff on my phone?

Back it up in iTunes! Just make a backup of the entire device but make sure you check sync contacts and the option to add contacts from phone to address book on computer.

I do not have Mavericks running on my older MacBook Pro. During the call, do you have the microphone icon on the Skype window enabled or disabled? Have done that before.
My Skype preferences:
Microphone: Built-in Microphone (Internal microphone)
* Automatically adjust microphone settings is set
Ringing and Speakers: Built-in Output (Internal Speakers)
Camera: Built-in iSight.
System Preferences > Sound
Input tab: Internal Microphone
Output tab: Internal Speakers

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

First of all, make sure that your iPhone as the most recent iOS available. Check in "Settings>General>Software Update".
One other problem could be your microphone. Does it work for anything else other than a call?
