Itunes 8 acting like a virus on vista - not blue screen

Hey, I just downloaded and installed the latest version of itunes onto my windows vista, and it caused the computer to act weird like it had a virus or something, now whenever I try to delete it from the computer it tells me I "don't have permission to do that" like itunes has locked itself into the computer.. Also often when I right click on a file a random message pops up and says that windows is searching for a solution for the problem, then it takes me back to the desktop and closes any programs I have open.. This is not the blue screen so many people have reported, it's just screwing up my computer and has locked itself in so it can't be deleted

My Library files are still on the C drive as the instructions said to leave them there
While it is implied that I can move ITunes music files off my C drive to make more space
Quote: "If your hard drive is nearly full after loading all your music and other media into iTunes, or if you just want to move all those music and media files to another hard drive on your system, here's a way to make the move while retaining all your playlists, ratings, and play history."
In fact I now see that ITunes Help seems to suggest something different. I got here by pressing the question mark while in the pop up box for "Edit, Preferences, Advanced"
Quote:
"By default, songs and other files you import into iTunes are placed here:
My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
Hide
To change the default location of imported files:
Choose Edit > Preferences, and click Advanced.
Click Change and select a new location for your files.
From now on, new songs and other items you import are stored in the new location. Songs you’ve already imported stay in their current location. (emphasis mine)
To restore the iTunes Media folder as the default storage location, click Reset (in the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences)."

  • ITunes is acting like its the first time I've logged on.

I'm trying to sync my iPod to my itunes account because I recently added new songs to it. When I opened itunes its acting as if I've never used it. No songs are showing up at all. What do I do? I'm more concerned about syncing my iPhone because i don't want to lose all my apps and contacts that are stored in my itunes account. Please help.

    Hi Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    *Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash*
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename *iTunes Library.itl* as *iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl* and then rename the restored file as *iTunes Library.itl*. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch (Windows) or Music Folder Files Not Added (Mac) and Super Remove Dead Tracks (Mac) for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working *make a backup!*

  • Solution found for Vista 64 Blue Screen Crash when  Itunes Sharing on.

After days of trial and error, I found the problem with my Windows based machine crashing (Blue Screen, IRQL error) when ATV would access ITunes through sharing. FYI, The blue screen error looked like a TCP/IP error.
The problem was with the AntiVirus software. I had to completly remove CA Security suite from my system. After removal, no problem to see library and share music, movies and pictures. Not sure what the conflict is, but apparently Itunes home sharing and Antivirus / Security software do not like each other.

You're having trouble with the drivers for your ATI Radeon video card or display adapter, lord.
If you've got a name brand PC and the video card or display adaptor came installed with the PC, head to the drivers and downloads page for your particular model of PC at the PC manufacturers website and try updating your video driver or display adaptor driver.
If the PC is custom/home-built, or you've added the Radeon to the system yourself, head to the AMD support website (AMD now owns ATI) and look for updated drivers for your particular model of video card or display adaptor.
If you're already up to date on your drivers, or updating didn't help with the BSOD, try heading into your Device manager and reinstalling your video drivers or Display adaptor drivers.
Do any of those measures give you any relief?

  • Raid + Vista + Quicktime = Blue Screen of Death

There is definitely a problem with Quicktime 7.16/Quicktime professional.
    my system:
    Abus p5b premium Vista MB
    2 WD2500SK in RAID 0
    2 gig DDR2 800 memory
    8800GTX video
    Vista Ultimate
Any quicktime movie I play runs fort about 1-2 seconds, the image blanks, and the Blue Screen of Death.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstallin Quicktime.
    I've tried disabling Direct X.
There is not a problem with the hardware because you take the same computer, same quicktime movie and runit in Nero's
Show Time 3 and it plays perfectly. All other movie formats in other players that I've tried (assorted avi, mpg, rm) also play gereat which once again indicates that the problem is Apple's software, not the hardware.
A google search shows it is people using RAID that have this problem:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=Quicktime+VistaBSOD&rls=com.microsoft:*&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
Movies dwonloaded from ITunes also can crash, but not as perdictably as .mov movies.
I called Apple tech support and was told to call (512) 674 8700. Called the numer and they are not open on weekends.
I will update the post when I get through to support.
I am suprised that Apple does not seem to have an email address for quicktime support. If anyone knows of one please post it.
    Peter

OK, I applied the 7.5.1017 driver. Still the same issues, choppy play and buffer overuns on some files.
As a test I copied seome the files not working right to the P5B's built in flash drive, they play fine there.
So it is definitely Apple and Intel not getting along.
BTW Vista scores the drive speed 5.9, so it isn't slow drives.
And no other software (including Nero's video player) have any problems.
It is too late to call Apple tech support today, but I'll post there answer whe I get one.

  • HP Pavilion with Vista keeps Blue Screening

After being racked with blue screens and too much stuff piled on my PC, I did a system recovery and restored everything to factory. However, now, a couple weeks later, I am being bombarded with blue screens.<br><br>The computer will glitch out, freeze and sometimes repeat a sound over and over again while showing blue screen and no matter how many times I restart, nothing fixes. Sometimes it wont even load past the blue HP screen or even to the logon window.<br><br>Currently, I'm getting the error ***STOP: 0X0000007F (0X0000000000000008, 0X0000000080050031, 0X00000000000006F8, 0XFFFFF800020E8834)

Sounds to me like a bad memory chip.  Do you have memtest86 on a bootable CD?  I would try to run with just one chip of memory installed at a time and see which one it blue screens on and if it works fine with another. It actually could be bad capacitors on the video card and/or mother board (check for bulging/rounded/leaking). The fan on the video card could be stuck or burnt out.  Your hard drive could have a bad sector so download the drive certification test iso image from the hard drive manufacturer and make a bootable CD. That will tell you if the drive is good and can fix bad sectors and some minor problems.

  • Does this sound like a logic board problem?  Blue screen

I have a G4 1.33GHz iBook 14". Recently it has started having problems with freezing and booting. It will boot normally, but a few seconds or minutes into use, if freezes, and only a force shutdown with the power button will work. Then, when it restarts, it may run fine, or may freeze up. Sometimes when it boots, the apple logo shows up, then the spinning wheel, then a light blue screen. And then, nothing.
I have tried all the usual stuff, including starting with the 10.4 DVD and running disk utility. Also Onyx and version 3.03 of Disk Warrior. It wouldn't boot from the Disk Warrior CD usually, and the one time it did, if froze up.
SO, I ended up booting it in Firewire Target Disk mode, and reformatting (zero'd out) using my MacBook. Then, reinstalled the 10.4 and upgraded to 10.4.7 using Software Update. It worked fine for about two hours, and then started freezing and blue screening again.
Does this sound like a logic board thing? It just occurred to me that I haven't tried all this stuff with my additional 1 Gb stick of RAM out. It hasn't caused any problems before, but I suppose it might affect this, no?
Sorry for the long post, but I want to try to diagnose and fix BEFORE it goes off to Apple to be returned with a "we can't demonstrate the problem" message and a bill.
    Thanks
    Roger

I took out the 1 Gb stick and it did the same thing. About half the time it boots, works for a little while then freezes up. The rest of the time it won't boot past the spinning wheel then the blue screen. Same deal with the OSX DVD and the DiskWarrior CD.
Frustrating. I may have to send it in.

  • Adobe Reader acts like a virus

I find it not only extremely annoying but an outright impudence that Adobe silently deletes the Adobe Reader Setup Exe after the setup has been initiated. I have never ever seen this behavior in any other program. What the heck are the programmers thinkiung? You DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION DO DELETE a downloaded file on my computer. I suggest you change this virus like behavior ASAP.

Thank you. But your answer has absolutely nothing to do with the issue I raised.
    So let's try it again:
    1. I download the latests setup file from the Adobe website.
    2. I save the downloaded file to a folder of my choice.
    3. I navigate to this folder and find the setup file.
    4. I start the setup.
    5. The setup file will be deleted without any prompt or confirmation.
    6. Read this again.

  • Acts like a virus

With my wired Mightymouse, the screen flashes light to dark. If multiple windows are open, they jump back and forth. It doesn't happen when I connect my old mouse and it doesn't happen when I connect my Mightymouse to either of our Intel macs. Downloaded and ran ClamXav with no results and now, with much difficulty, I am running ClamX with the Mightymouse attached

    HI,
*There are no Mac viruses in the wild so you can rule that out.*
Believe it or not, dust, fingerprints, smudges can cause erratic behavior for a mouse.
Try cleaning the MIghty Mouse. How to Clean Mac Products
FYI ... ClamXav will slow you hard drive down so you might want to uninstall the software.
If cleaning the mouse doesn't help, try Resetting the PRAM
Also, if you are running 10.5.5 you need to update your system software. Download and install the v10.5.8 Combo Update

  • How can I delete bearsearch from my media toolbar (and Firefox in general)? It's acting like a virus and not letting me reset my home page.

My grandson visited the BearShare website. Since then, the only home page that will "stick" in Firefox is http://search.bearshare.com. Repeated attempts to reset my home page have failed. After I reset the home page and close Firefox, when the program is restarted, the home page is, once again, http://search.bearshare.com.
I notice that BearShare is listed on my Media Toolbar. How can I delete this item?

  • TS1538 iTunes 10.6.1.7 and Win/Vista Not Recognizing iPhone 4S!!!

I bought my first iPhone which is a 4s two weeks ago, and the latest iTunes did not recognize it, while Win/Vista recognized it on the drop down list and as a camera.  The same iTunes was able to detect iPhone 4 which I bought for my family member.  I then connected iPhone 4s to iTunes under WinXP, and it worked fine, so I was totally confused.  I submitted the question to Apple iTunes Feedback, and did not receive any reply.
I have used iTunes many years with iPod and iTouch, and was happy with it, but this incident changes my perception of Apple completely!
Eventaully, I did more research on the web, and learnt during the iTunes installation, iTunes did not update the device or USB driver for iPhone 4s!!!  It was solved, under Win/Vista, by updating the device driver by pointing to the iTunes directory.  My conclusion is this has to be a bug of the iTunes installation process.
Very disappointed with Apple's lack of response.  I actually planned to switch to use Mac, but this experience or rather Apple's effort to rectify the problem has changed my attitude towards Apple completely.  It is a shame!  Or is this their tactic to encourage Win users to migrate to Apple Mac???

I too have only recently encountered this problem. I have been able to burn disks before but it keeps making all these weird sounds. It might be a hardware problem but the fact that everything else that uses a disk works I doubt it.

  • We bought a movie on itunes and would like to play it on our TV screen. For that I wold like to transfer it onto a USB stick so I can play it directly on our TV. Its saying the file is too large for my stick although that is not true. What to do?

We bought and downloaded a movie from Itunes and trying to transfer it onto an USB some can play it back on a TV. We cannot move it onto the stick. It says the stick is too small but thats actually not the case. Rainer

Films from the iTunes store have digital-rights-management on them, they can only be played via a computer's iTunes or device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple TV). If you don't have Apple TV then do you have a iOS device, and the relevant cables, to connect it to your TV and apply it via the device - or if you bought it on a computer is that close enough (and you have the relevant cable) to connect it to your TV ?

  • My iPad 2 acts like I am touching all over the screen when I am not.

On the plane ride the other day I was using iBooks, and my iPad started scrolling through the pages like crazy (even when I was not touching the screen).
Now, it will just start performing actions (clicking, swiping, multi touch, zoom, etc) even when I am not touching the screen at all. For instance, when I am in mail, it will all of a sudden bring up the reply menu, change emails, close the app, scroll, etc and it is just going crazy.
I don't know what to do to fix it, but I am 3+ hours from the nearest apple store.
Any suggestions? Is anyone else having this problem?

I'm having the exact same issue now. What did you end up doing?
I restored the thing but didn't work. It keeps doing it. It does it for so long time I even took a video of it to show at the store: http://youtu.be/BqGCyEQU-mY
    Good luck!

  • Safari acts like Flash and Java are not installed, even though they are

Even though I have the latest versions installed, websites viewed in Safari tell me that I need Flash and/or Java. I have searched the forums and tried every suggestion, with no fix:
    • Uninstall and re-install Flash
    • Re-install Java
    • Delete the Flash player cache (~ > Library > Caches > Adobe > Flash Player)
    • Repair permissions on the hard drive
Flash and Java were both working fine until the 10.6.5 upgrade. Flash and Java both work in Firefox and Chrome on the same machine. (Everything is the latest version.)
If anyone has a solution that will actually restore the use of Flash (don't really care about Java), that would be awesome! Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi,
    Install the 10.6.5 Combo Update.
Then launch Disk Utility. Applications / Utilities then repair disk permissions.

  • My printer acts like its printing but its not printing anything on the paper

I have tried all I can think of. I have unplugged the printer from computer and electricty. I have removed device and reinstalled. I have no idea what happened. It was working the other day and then all of a sudden it is doing this.

    Hey Athanagild,
    What model printer?
Does it print from the front panel (test/config page)?
    Thanks,

  • Mail is like a virus - how can I disarm it?

I do not want Mail. I do not Like Mail. I hate Mail. I want it out of my life (Eudora is infinitely better), but the bloody program acts like a virus - it keeps starting itself up and inflicting itself on my computer.
How do I rid my computer of this thing once and for all? Unfortunately, Apple does not believe in an uninstall function.

Mail doesn’t open by itself. If it does on
your computer, then it has to be because of something
you’re doing or something you’ve installed, in which
case you should identify the problem and fix it
    instead of trashing Mail.
The ONLY change has been an upgrade from OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.9. A paid for and fully legal upgrade in case you were wondering...
    Of course, that would
require properly describing what the problem really
is and the circumstances under which Mail launches
instead of vaguely saying “Mail is like a virus”,
    which doesn’t make sense.
Mail attempts to change the configuration of my computer and take control of some functions. Is that not what a virus does?
I HAVE fully described the problem and circumstances. Please do not trash me because I am asking for a solution to a "Mail" issue on the appropriate forum.
There is nothing else going on that I can detect. This problem does NOT follow any pattern that I have been able to detect, such as when opening another program or document, printing, scanning, checking mail with Eudora, going on the net, starting up, logging on, restarting, etc. etc. etc.
In case you are wondering if I know my way around a Mac, my first Apple was a ][+.
If Mail launches by itself for no apparent reason,
you probably have a piece of software such as a
Dashboard widget, or a plug-in, or a system utility,
or iCal remainders, or something like that, that
requires Mail to be running for whatever it does...
The only widget remotely related to what you have suggested is address book. Other than that, "none of the above."
    I reiterate, I am asking for a solution to Mail's virus-like behavior.
