Itunes corrupting files--right title, wrong song

I have Windows XP and I'm using iTunes 7.
I've been putting together playlists, and suddenly something strange is happening frequently. I'm getting songs that are matched up with the wrong song names. All the songs are songs I have in my collection. Sometimes the original file is fine (i.e. only the playlist has the wrong song) and sometimes it is changed as well. I didn't resize the playlists (I did a search and found that can cause a similar problem). This is happening on itunes before I try to update my ipod.
This is upsetting especially because I'm losing songs that I'll have to buy all over again.

Open windows explorer.
Rt Click on the c drive and then properties.
Click on the tools tab
hit the Check now button.
If you have bad sectors then the drive is failing. Its my experience that if you see checkdisk repairing links when you are booting up then get your data off fast. Like I said two weeks ago all of a sudden my itunes stoppped working as I was importing cds. Then other stuff stopped working, so I rebooted the pc and saw the checkdisk startup. The very next day I backed up my data and bought a new drive. A while back when checkdisk would repair stuff it would do exactly what you describe, you play one artist but the music is someone else.
Would the drive you are using be a Western Digital by chance?

  • IPhone won't completely delete songs in iTunes (corrupted files?)

    Hey guys,
I've been working on this issue for nearly two days now, and I just have no idea of how to fix it. The issue: in iTunes, my iPhone says I have multiple albums/songs on the phone, despite me trying multiple times to delete them, and despite them not actually appearing on my phone. These are all songs that have been purchased, and are on the cloud. On my actual iPhone screen, the songs don't appear at all, since I deleted them. But when I plug my phone into my computer, in my iTunes, the songs remain - they're just dimmed, with dotted circles on the left of them. My goal is to have all of these songs deleted from the iPhone altogether, and have that appear both on the phone and in iTunes. It seems like these are corrupted files, but I have no idea how to get rid of them. This is how my iTunes and my iPhone look, right now.
    I've done the following things:
--I've fooled around with redownloading them from the cloud on the iPhone separate from the computer, then plugging it into my computer to delete them in iTunes. But even after I delete them in iTunes, it constantly brings the files back after I sync.
-I checked and unchecked the items in iTunes, before syncing. It lets me delete them; but again, after I click Sync, the files return.
-I deleted all of the music from my iTunes library, and I turned off the Manually Manage Music option, so that the iPhone would sync with the iTunes and delete everything from the phone. The result was all the music on the iPhone being deleted...except these straggling files that I'm having this issue with.
Does anyone have any other tips? I don't want to reset to factory settings because I have a couple work apps on the phone that I can't find links to to redownload them. And the iPhone managing apps are not an option; I can't download apps on this computer. I've been troubleshooting online, but I'm not sure if I'm just doing some of these things incorrectly. Can anyone help me?

I've reset it - erased all content and settings - and they're still there! Though I restored it from the Cloud. Not sure if that would influence it.

  • Help with fixing my iTunes - Corrupt File

I need help trying to correct the problem with my iTunes. I just installed the new iTunes update, iTunes 6.0.1, and now my iTunes isn't working properly. Everytime I open my iTunes, my library is gone. Luckily I saved my library before, but I don't want to keep reloading it over and over again when I open iTunes.
I keep getting a message saying, "iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" with a message saying "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Itunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
I tried to repair iTunes, reinstalling it over and over again, and running the Chkdsk utility, but nothing works.
I am stumped and don't know what to do now.

    hi Nick!
"iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" with a message saying "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Itunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility"
good lord ... okay, if it's not a hard drive problem, let's try downloading some fresh definitions and doing vigorous spyware and virus scans.
    does that show up anything?

  • Corrupt file message when downloading song

I keep getting an error message that the file may be corrupted when I try to purchase from the itunes store.
It appears that the recent itunes software update is not working right with my computer. I have even tried to download after I shut off my internet software. To no avail.
Can I get a refund if I keep having problems and not getting my songs? Any help appreciated.

probably the best thing to do with a #10008 is to report it directly to the store. using purchase history or the email form at the bottom of the following FAQ would both work fine (use "other" in the message number field, and cite the number in the text of your message):

  • Office on Windows corrupting file rights on XSAN

MS Office running on my Windows Server 2003 Termserver is corrupting the Posix and ACL rights on my XSAN.  This also happens with Office 2007 loaded on an XP Pro machine.  We were using Office 2007 and I upgraded the Termserver to Office 2010.  The problems got slightly worse.
I have a file named ray.xls for testing.  If I give that file Domain Admin, Full Control rights I can open it as a Domain Admin but access is denied when I try and write.  So I changed the Posix Group to Domain Admins and that allows me to save.  The following screen shots show what is happening.
These are the rights before I open the file.
I open the file as jfuller (a domain admin), change one cell and then save and close the file.  The rights change to this.
I open the file a second tme, make another change, save and close the file.  This is the new rights.
From this point on, every time I save the spreadsheet it will add another ACL for John Fuller with Custom rights.
I have files with rights that have 30 or 40 ACL entries.  What the heck is going on?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    John

This turned out to be an issue with Microsoft Office (Windows version) and SMB.  We have found others with similar issue on Linux shares using SMB.  We have implemented some changes to the smb.config file that are reported to correct the issue.
We waiting for feed back from users but it is working so far.
If anyone is interested, I can post some additional details.

  • ITunes Upgrade My Library Downloads Wrong Song

So I decided to update my library with the new DRM-Free tracks. I clicked to download and told iTunes to delete my old songs. First off, I noticed that iTunes did not delete all of my old songs, so I decided to go through the duplicate songs and delete what iTunes failed to do. Upon doing so, I noticed that several of my "explicit" songs were upgraded to DRM-Free "clean" versions of the song. Basically, iTunes downloaded the wrong versions of my songs. Has this happened to anyone else? How can I get a refund on these purchased songs or get Apple to give me DRM-Free versions that I paid for?

Contact the iTunes Store Customer Service department using the form at the bottom of the Purchase Issues FAQ web page and explain the problem to them. They're undoubtedly being hammered with questions, so it may take longer than normal before you get a response.
    Regards.

  • Right Title, Wrong Episode!

I searched for a Season 3 Supernatural episode, Mystery Spot, on iTunes. It showed the correct title, season number, and description, so I bought it. $2.99. I downloaded it over night and watched it the next day. It had the same title and description. However, when I watched it, the episode wasn't what itunes claimed it to be. It was Jus In Bello, it's also a Season 3 episode, but not the one I wanted! I also downloaded some of the HD episode, same as the regular one. I don't want to risk buying it again. What do I do?
    Thanks!
    Nicole

    Thanks,
However the instructions posted aren't necessarily correct. I had to go through the following steps:
    1) Open Itunes
    2) Select View My Account from Store menu
    3) Then Log in
    4) Then click Purchase History
    5) Then click the arrow next to the episode
    6) Then Click report a problem button
    7) Then click the report a problem link that opens under a new column called Report a problem
    8) Then select "This TV episode was labeled incorrectly"
    9) And fill in the text.
They sure make it difficult to report a problem

  • ITunes corrupted playback within itunes and has actually corrupted my files

I have a strange problem, when playing certain songs itunes will reference to the wrong song and sometimes start the playback within the middle of these wrong songs...what's worse is that the problem has effected the actual files on my hard drive...they play the wrong songs in finder and other audio applications as well. I hope that this is just a tagging issue that can be resolved but I have no idea how to go about it. Please Help!!

I didn't mess with the iTunes Media folder previously, so I don't think that was the cause. Anyway, I manually fixed most of the songs, but I still can't figure out how to fix the movies that became listed as songs.
Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when I click on "Get Info" for one of the movies (which has ended up in the music section on iTunes):
There is no option to change the media kind to "movie" or "video" even though it is a movie and it still plays as a movie if I press play.

  • Backing up itunes library files

Each night using .mac I backup my iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files. Is there really anything else I can backup in case of that ever so unlikely chance of losing my iTunes data? Or are these the only two key files?
G5 Dual 2.5ghz 2.5ghz RAM LaCie FireWire DVD Burner   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   17" Studio display, JBL Creature Speakers, Logic, Edirol USB Keyboard Controller

The really important file is the 'iTunes Library' file, which holds all song locations, playlists and ratings.
The 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file is not used by iTunes, but created by it to be used by other applications (e.g. iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto)

    Hi, InsaneCharlie.
Thanks for the question.  I see you have uninstalled iTunes and want this program back.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes if present and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.  If none of your data was modified in the iTunes media folder, then your data should be present upon installation.

  • ITunes corrupting video files on metadata changes

I have some video tutorials that I've been attempting to add to my iTunes library so I can watch them on my iPhone and appleTV.
The videos copy into my library successfully. They play fine on my mac / phone / aTV as long as I don't change any metadata.
But as soon as I try and change some metadata...
    Well, things are getting weird.
Sometimes I've been able to change the metadata on the file without any issue. However, most of the time, I make a change (album art, title, album name) that results in a pinwheel. The program seems to hang for a bit but then makes the change. Everything looks fine and until you try and play the video which will no longer play. Not in iTunes. Not in the finder. Nothing. Even opening the file in iTunes causes the program to crash.
I'm a little confused, as I've been able to add videos before and make changes to every bit of metadata that my heart desired with no issues.
I'm even more confused that the problem is intermittent and while this problem happens 90% of the time, it miraculously doesn't when I try to show / explain what's happening.
It seems to me that there's most likely something wrong on my end within my iTunes library, but I'm not shure where/how to start troubleshooting.
Anyone with any ideas or advice, your comments and suggestions are valued and appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ian
ps. I'm running the most current build of Lion and iTunes.

    Hi all,
same problem here, but in a windows (shame on me...) network:
    * Two PCs w/ Win 7 64-bit
    * iTunes 10.7.x
    * iTunes library on a D-LINK DNS-320 (firmware: 2.02.x)
After editing metadata of video files (adding art, changing title OR adding some details like year) the file is corrupt and will no longer play: not in iTunes, not in Quicktime, neither VLC nor MPC or any other Windows video software.
This happens always(!), it doesn't matter what PC I use to edit the metadata. Doesn't matter, which video encoder (Freemake, Aisee, even Quicktime and it's ATV-profile) I use. The original video input format doesn't matter.
    Downgrading the D-Link firmware to 1.9 and/or iTunes to 10.6 doesn't give a result.
Today even some mp3 got corrupted after adding cover art. Therefore i can't believe the file size is the reason.
Maybe this is a hint: In Windows Explorer (something like the finder on a mac) I can't change the owner nor the user rights of the (corrupted or not yet corrupted) file. Is there any problem known relating to iTunes read-write-ability and NAS user rights whr storing the iTunes library on an external HDD?
What about the library size or the amount of media objects (130 movies, 500 TV Shows, 15000 mp3, ...)?
    Any ideas or solutions anyone?
Or a good mp4-tagger (incl. cover option) for Windows?
    regards,
    martin

  • HELP NEEDED - iTunes.exe -Corrupt File

I am getting this error message everytime I plug in my iPod to update thru iTunes.
    iTunes.exe - Corrupt File
The file or directory/iPod_ControliTunes/TempFile is corrupt & unreadable.
    Please run the Chkdsk utility.
So my question is....how do I backup all the songs and playlists so that I do not lose them. And then do I just run the dist that came with the iPod to start it over again and if so do I delete the old Itunes?
Plese help I would like to save the songs, restore iTunes somehow and be able to bring back the songs with nothing lost.

In Windows, the default location of your songs is:
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
Your 'iTunes library' file which hold all playlists, locations of songs, ratings etc. is located in:
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
Copy the complete iTunes directory to your backup device.
That way, you will copy all songs and library information.
After fixing the problem with the corrupt file, put the files back to the location they came from (if necessary).
In my very limited experience with the chkdsk utility, no files were lost, but it is always wise to have a backup in case something goes wrong.
    Hope this helps.
    M
    P.S.
You will probably get more help by posting in the iTunes for Windows forum (this is the Mac forum)

  • Itunes xml file corruption

I'd like to ask the community if anyone else is having trouble with corruption of their iTunes XML library file?
Back on October 20th, my iTunes library completely imploded: roughly one third of all songs stopped playing, all my Digital Copy movies refused to play. I had just upgraded my iPad to iOS 6 and pretty much everything imploded. The solution was to basically delete the iTunes XML files, re-install the software and then re-import all my uploaded music.
Yesterday, I connected one of my iPod Classics and saw the same error messages that started the first round of trouble: there were 7 files that iTunes claimed it could not sync with my Classic because they were the "wrong format". I checked each in turn and they turned out to be from 3 of my 650 or so albums. In each case I could click on the iTunes entry and nothing would play: no error was reported.
In each case if I pulled up the track information, I could see that the references for these 7 songs had been corrupted. So for example, the track "We Didn't Start The Fire", from Billy Joel's album, "Storm Front", had "Song Information" that said it was actually located in /iTunes/Crowded House/ - no album name or song name were included. Every one of the 7 "wrong format" songs had corrupted "location data" like this. The choice of the tracks that were corrupted appears to be largely random. However, I have noticed that corruption only seems to occur when I add new material to my iTunes database.
The first instance was a complete meltdown and required a clean re-installation of iTunes - literally hundreds of song entries were corrupted. This time around only 7 seem to have been impacted [though i concede it could be more].
I tried asking Apple support for help and although they were able to walk me through the repair process, they have been unable to explain why this corruption is taking place. I wonder if anyone has any ideas? For what little it may help:-
I am running iTunes 10.7(21) on a Mac Mini (OS/X 10.7.5(11G63)) with the 2.3GHz Core i5 and 8Gb of RAM.
My iTunes Library "XML" file is in my local home directory [default location], but because it's now well over 200Gb in size, all the music files for iTunes are stored in a QNAP NAS [works fine, local Apple folk helped me configure it].
It's difficult to triage exactly what's happening without having access to something like XMLspy and being able to work through the iTunes XML file piecemeal, but it does look like something during the "add songs to database" process is corrupting that file, and, interestingly, it adds new content fine - it's existing entries that get corruption.
My music library is not *that* big: the XML file is 15.2Mb on disc, iTunes is currently holding 659 Albums an about 7827 songs.
Does anyone else have ideas as to what might be causing this? It seems to be a relatively recent development, and since I rebuilt the database completely 6 weeks ago, this most recent damage is definitely a recent thing.
    Suggestions gratefully received.

The XML file is a readable subset of the data in the main library file. If the library database becomes corrupt the easiest approach is to restore an earlier version.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
The images are from Windows XP but you get the idea. Your Mac library file may omit the .itlextension.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working I'm told Carbon Copy Cloner can do the equivalent of this Windows based backup tip.

  • ITunes library file corrupt PLEASE HELP

My sister and I both got new iPods for Christmas. I had an extensive library, while she was brand new and I just added songs to hers. We have Windows XP and I figured since we have different screens, we'd have different iTunes. I just updated hers and went to open my iTunes. What opened was a blank screen and the message "The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\Kaitlyn\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT TO DO AND I AM HYSTERICAL. If someone could PLEASE answer me, you would save my Christmas. Thank you.

This is an image of what my iTunes looks like right now. If I follow the instructions on the website, everything will come back? I mean, I had SO MANY songs a few hours ago and now it looks like this...

I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions. It's just that I am so nervous about losing everything. Also, on that site, it doesn't say that it's a corrupt .itl file... will it still work?
