ITunes - Creating Separate Libraries

I have a ton of songs in iTunes. editing - searching and finding stuff is getting slower and slower. I seem to remember several years back that there was some way, (I Think involving AppleScript) to have multiple separate libraries within iTunes, but I can't quite remember how this was done. So basically - I would like to create a few separate libraries - possibly one for current music - and another one for archive music - that I will keep but seldom use.
Q: What is the best way to create several different separate libraries in iTunes?

Pardon the intrusion.

  • How to make a CD of MP3 songs to play on a Bluray player without ITunes creating separate folders for each album

I'm trying to make a CD full of MP3 files that I can play on my Bluray player for a long party, but when I burned the disc using ITunes, it created separate folders for each source album, and it won't play.  You have to open each individual album to get the songs to play.
Can you make a cd that has all of the songs in one folder?

  • Creating separate libraries on separate computers

I have master library on an external HDD. I have a macbook Pro and also a PC laptop. I would like to have music on each of these. Preferably, I would like only a portion of my full music, to save space. I would like to sync my Ipod to one or both of these laptops, as I use my Macbook at home, and the PC for travel. I would like to be able to add, burn, and manage the music on each cpu, from that respective cpu.
    tyia for any suggestions
Right now, I am thinking that I should create new libraries for each cpu, unless there is a better answer.

    Yes.
Don't know how you would do it otherwise.

Really? Why not other way around?

Make groups of contacts in your Address Book and select the option to sync only selected groups to each phone.

  • ITunes account with 2 separate libraries...Can we split the account so neither of us loose our music?

Currently have an iTunes account with 2 separate libraries and would like to split them into two separate accounts.  I'd like my niece to have her own account at this point.  Can we split the account so that neither of us loose our current music and videos?

You can't split the accounts. Purchased items stay authorized with the account it was purchased on. Really, the only thing you can do is keep your libraries separate and use them that way, or create an account for her, put your purchases in her account and authorize her device(s) to use your apple ID. I've done that with my library; my boyfriend and I share the same library with two different accounts and each of our devices are authorized to play one anothers purchases.
Sorry there's no better way I can think of. I'd like to split our libraries.... I wish Apple would create a feature keeping in mind that people buy new PCs and that family members move and get old enough for their own account, etc. :/

  • How can two users have separate libraries in iTunes?

I have a library in iTunes for my 20 GB iPod, and now someone else in the house has an iPod shuffle. How is the shuffle installed into iTunes without overriding my library? Will it become obvious when the shuffle software is downloaded? Will I be forced to upgrade to the current version of iTunes (I've been avoiding that because when I previously upgraded I had endless problems with iTunes until the next version came out)? Thanks for any help!!

Two iPods can update from the same library if you choose. The shuffle has two fill options, autofill which adds a random selection of songs or manual and you drag what you want to it. You can continue to manage your other iPod whatever way you want to. You can also create a separate User account for each person on your PC. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses. The iPod shuffle 2nd generation requires iTunes 7 so if you are still on 6 you'll need to update.

  • How to create 2 separate libraries on one computer ?

I have two music folders (such as "kids" and "Adults") in the "My Music" folder and I want to create 2 separate libraries for managing the music for Kids versus adults.  I cannot figure out how to create a new iTunes library limited to a single folder tree ("kids" for example) . . .  because iTunes only gives the option to "Scan for Media" which is promiscuous and scans everything, regardless of where the library files are created.
I know I can temporariry remove the "kids" folder then create a the "Adult" library.  Then temporariliy remove "Adults" folder and create a "Kids" library, but thats requires hours of file copying to and from an External USB drive.  Once the two libraries are created then they can live together on the same computer . . . but how to get the libraries initially created is the question ?    Maybe I will try NTFS file permissions to make folder 'A' invisible to iTunes while creating the library for folder 'B'.
But there must be an iTunes option to do this . . right ?

RESOLVED . . . Still looking for an iTunes method of creating 2 libraries on 1 computer.   But if it helps for others, you can use NTFS file permissions to deny access to one folder tree to keep iTunes focused on the other folder tree it can see when you select "Scan for Media".
Then reverse the permissions to create the library for the other folder tree.   When done allow access two both trees and they will then co-exist on one computer.
The only remaining inconvenience . . . I have iTunes Match set up on library "Adults".  If I sign into the Apple store to buy a song or get artwork from library "Kids", iTunes is populated with the "Adult" songs from iTunes Match.  I just have to avoid staying signed into the Store from the "Kids" library, so someone doesn't start downloading "Adults" music into the "Kids" library.
To inform the context of this question, we have 3 Apple portable devices that play from our iTunes Match "adult" library.  We also have "Adult" and "kid" devices that are not Apple, so we just copy the respective folder tree to non-Apple devices.
So the use NTFS DENY permissions works for creating two libraries on a single computer, and it only take a few minutes to do,  BUT FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T SYSTEM ADMININSTRATORS, IS THERE AN "APPLE WAY" TO DO THIS ON A WINDOWS COMPUTER?

  • Creating multiple libraries on ITunes

My family has 3 different iPods and we each would like our own iTunes music libraries. Is there an easy way to create separate instances of iTunes or different libraries on the same computer?

Before the crash of iTunes 5, our family's various ipods each had their own playlist (named eg. Kiddos iPOD)and each particular iPod with its own name was set to only Automatically Update Selected Playlists Only via Preferences Thus: One big Library, and several pseudo libraries that were actually playlists. This worked out perfectly UNTIL the iPod 5 attempted install and subsequent diaspora of various elements of the Library and Playlists. Hopefully I'll be able to find all this stuff when it is safe to attempt the iPod 5 update ...just waiting for Appple to fix it.

  • Creating 2 separate libraries on the same computer

So my sister just got her first iPod (nano chromatic), I have had mine for two years (nano second generation). I would like to know if it is possible to create two separate libraries on the same computer. If someone could also please tell me how to do that, that would be awesome. Thank you all so much!

To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
Another option is to create a separate Windows User account for each person on your PC. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here: Create and customize user accounts in Windows XP

  • Want to save files, documents, bookmarks, iTunes and iPhoto libraries, each in separate folders to external hard drive prior to full sweep and overwrite for the purpose of full sweep of Macbook?

Never done this before and cannot find a manual for OS X 10.7.5 Lion. Basically I want to clean my 2009 Macbook6,1 as though I were selling it and start out fresh but before I attempt it I want to stash my contents (Files, Documents, Bookmarks, iTunes and iPhoto libraries to my external Hard Drive, all in separate folders to return them to Macbook after the full sweep and big overwrite. Can anyone help me?

That may not be the best approach (see below).
Format the drive for a Mac (see #1 in Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how).
Create the folders you want on it.
Open a second Finder window and drag what you want from one to the other.
If you only copy the stuff listed, you'll lose your AddressBook, Mail, Calendars, preferences, and probably all sorts of other things.
A better option might be to back up your entire system, either with Time Machine or one of the "cloning" apps.  Then you can restore selectively from TM, or copy selectively from the clone.

  • Help with Creating 2 Libraries with iTunes

Hi - I'm looking to create and use 2 separate libraries with iTunes on the same computer. Background: I have a large collection now of lossless files (AIFF), both CD rips (16bit/44.1kHz) and higher resolution audio (24bit/96kHz), which are very large files I use for streaming to an audiophile system (via a Logitech Transporter to DAC/processor, etc.). I also have several iPods and an AppleTV I use that have music, applications, video, etc. I want to primarily use what I'll call the "high resolution" library that only needs the music files, but from time to time switch over to a 2nd library I'll call "other" (which would contain smaller compressed music files more suitable for ipod, as well as ipod app's, video content for AppleTV). I would periodically load up the "Other" library to sync up ipods and AppleTV, but the vast majority of the time have the "high res" library open (as the Logitech Squeezecenter music server requires iTunes to be open at the same time with the appropriate library).
So that's the background. Effectively just want to make a copy of the current library (to be "other"), downconvert all the music from the high res versions, make sure I keep all the apps and video, and clean up the original library. Couple questions - when running iTunes on the same computer with 2 different libraries (both can be on my iMac as I have a 1TB drive with adequate space for now), can I delete all the app's, AppleTV link, etc. from the "high res" library once copied? Also, what's the best method for copying the library (i.e., just create a new one and copy everything in with the appropriate preferences checked - "copy files to library"/"keep itunes folder organized"?)
    Thanks for any thoughts

    don't worry glad to help

but its very complicated and as i'm no expert in computer code i would wait to try it out before and expert in computer code has a look and see if its oky to use (you have to be VERY careful). By the way it comes from a trustworthy site so i'm sure its fine

  • I have created separate user accounts for my 2 boys on my macbook. How do i get my itunes library onto their new ipods?

I have created separate user accounts for my 2 boys on my macbook. How do i get my itunes library onto their new ipods?

They can't.  Which came first - the chicken or the egg?  Actually, that's a bad comparison but a sync must come first.
The library is actually part of iTunes and it contains everything.  iTunes is then configured so that you (or they) determine which portion of everything will be synced to each iPod (identified by a unique name, see below for an example of an iPod and an iPad).  iTunes can't make that decision until AFTER it knows which iPods exist.
By the way, I (you, they) can very easily change the name of each device to whatever I (you, they) wish to call it.

    Generally YES.
It's possible to hold separate iTunes library's on a single machine.
Generate two new folders inside the Music folder of the Mini and name them differently; e.g. man and woman.
Copy your whole library into "man" and your wifes into "woman"
Go to sharing in the system settings of the Mini and share the Music folder in your network.
After copying the whole library's to the Mini you may point iTunes to the new location at startup by holding the option key (alt) at the keyboard.
iTunes will then ask you where the library is located.
Point it to the matching library on the Mini.
    That's all.
    Lupunus
PS ... If you both use only the Mini you have to setup a user account for each and just copy the whole library to the Music folder in particular.

the cuts scattered over several albums.  How do I keep all the cuts on an album together rather than divided between several albums? I'm brand new with this technology, so I need your information in simple terms.  Thank-you.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.
The site could do with updating as some options have changed with iTunes 11, but the principles are the same.

  • Creating 2 libraries on Itunes

    Hi,
I would like to know if it is possibile to create 2 Libraries on iTunes so I can use 2 ipods but with different music.
    Cheers

To create or access a second library, hold down the option key when launching iTunes 7. In the dialogue box that appears you will get the option to create or navigate to the another Library. An alternative to this is use a single library and choose the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) for your iPods. This would allow you to create a playlist specifically for each one and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod Mini or Nano (around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB). You can read more about playlists at these links:
