ITunes intermittently pausing and un-pausing

This behavior just started a few days ago - iTunes randomly starts playing the selected song, and the music starts pausing and restarting, even when I initiate by clicking on the play button. Very strange - It's like an invisible hand is randomly hitting the spacebar, except that it does it even when iTunes isn't the front application. (In fact, it's doing it while I'm typing this message in Safari.) I'm clueless as to what to try. Trash the plist? Anybody out there had a similar problem?

I think I may have fixed the problem. After trying loads of other ideas (new user account, trashing plists, etc., none of which had any effect) I disconnected all of my USB cables and hubs and reconnected just the essentials. I also unplugged and re-plugged the audio-out cable to my amp/speakers. After this I relaunched iTunes and haven't had a recurrence yet (going on 6 hours.) My fingers are figuratively crossed.

This is easily done with a state machine architecture. There is a simple example written in LabVIEW 5.0 that can be found here. The state machine is a very powerful way to write programs. There are numerous examples on NI Developer Zone and a couple examples that ship with LabVIEW. Do a search in either to find them.

    Hi morgangang,
Although that message is not listed in the following article, I would still go through it for help.  Things like installing in safe mode may help.

Make sure your computer meets the system requirements.
Try running ScanDisk to verify that the directory is OK. This is an important step to take before installing any software.
Try running the stand-alone version of the QuickTime installer in "Safe Mode." It is available here. This can help to isolate issues with background applications, and some driver conflicts.
Make certain you have installed the most recent drivers for your sound and video cards. Even if you have a "brand new" computer, it is not guaranteed to have the most recent software installed. Contact the manufacturer of your sound and video cards for additional information.
Make certain you have installed a recent version of DirectX.
Errors are usually related to software conflicts, unusable files, or incompatibilities. They can also be related to specific hardware combinations, and sometimes the way in which the hardware is configured. Keep in mind that an error message does not necessarily point to a particular cause or solution. Since there can be many different causes for a particular symptom, some suggestions may not work, and you may need to discover a solution on your own.

Is anyone else experiencing trouble playing video in itunes?  Video intermittenly pauses and also plays with not audio.  Video used to play fine.  This problem only started since I upgraded to version 7.  I have not used itunes since then because I couldn't watch anything without experiencing these problems.  I was waiting for the next version to come out and hoped it would fix the problems I was having, but no such luck.  I just upgraded to the latest version, version 11 and I'm still having the same problems.  Anyone else having these same issues and if so, any solutions?

  • Silly iTunes Question re: 7.0 and Play/Pause

    Hi everyone,
Since upgrading to iTunes 7.0.1 I've noticed that the Player seems to stay on "Play" when it gets to the end of an album or playlist rather than going to "Pause" mode. To start the next playlist after selecting it, I have to hit "Pause" and then "Play" to start it playing again.
It seemed that the previous version would go into "Pause" at the end and then I could just select my next choice and hit "Play". Am I nuts?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes playback skips, pauses and distorts

Recently I haven't been able to use my itunes for playback through my desktop because the songs pause and skip, and in some cases I get loud distortion or static. Previously it had been working fine for 18 months. I deleted the program and downloaded it afresh: the first song was OK but then the problem recurred. My operating system is XP. Can anybody suggest a solution?
Other programs on the computer are working normally although possibly a bit slower than they were. Are there viruses or other nasties which attack iTunes in particular?
    PC generic   Windows XP

Problem was with iTunes libary (xml) file and not Firefox. Once I rebuilt my library from scratch, iTunes no longer skipped.

  • ITunes 10.1 and Earbuds with Remote - Can't pause or skip songs on MBP

Since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 today, I notice that I can't pause and skip songs with my iPhone earbuds when they're plugged into the Mac. I have a [latest gen 2.4 GHz] 13" MacBook Pro and I could have sworn this was a feature that worked prior to the upgrade. I know it works just fine on my 27" iMac at home, so it's possible that I might be confusing the two systems. All I am able to change is the volume up and down.
Does anyone else have a 13" MBP and a pair of earbuds with the mic? Are you able to click once and pause iTunes and click twice to skip to the next song? I'm so used to doing this on my phone and iMac that I wonder if I am just taking it for granted and maybe the 13" MBP never supported this.
Thanks for any help or tips you can provide.

I've heard others with this same problem in the past. It sounds like a manufacturing problem with the headphones themselves causing the buttons to not work.

  • Track Pause and Unpause causes beachball on iTunes 7.5  (10.5.1)

I recently upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) and noticed that both iTunes and Quicktime beachball for about 10 or so seconds after a pause and unpause of any audio file.
I just ran repair permissions on the drive before posting. Also, I moved all the itunes plist files from the Library and ran iTunes again, but I'm having the same symptoms. Help me kick that beachball.

After burning a CD using iTunes 7.5 on Leopard 10.5.1, the CD will not mount and cannot be ejected using the iTunes eject button. I was able to get the disc out using the keyboard eject button, but this behavior doesn't make sense.
I'm annoyed by the same problem... Still no solutions? Is this going to be a case of "will be sorted out in next version of iTunes and/or Leopard"? The CD mounts fine when ejected and reinserted.

  • Itunes contstantly pausing and restarting

My iPhone 3g is constantly pausing and restarting when used in my car connected to an auxiliary input. I am running a simple wire 3.5mm (headphone port) wire from the iphone to another 3.5mm (headphone port) I have built into my car. For whatever reason when using this setup the itunes app in iphone will constantly freeze not allowing me to listen to music. I've tried replacing the cable which allowed it to work briefly but the problem has started again, any thoughts? Does apple offer a standard cable for something like this?

    Hello j0dy77, limeylove88,
If the issue is present with multiple systems, then it is likely that there is something going on with the iPhone iteslf. The iPod starting up automatically should not happen unless you quit the iPod function by disconnecting the audio cable previously.
You may want to try restoring the iPhone and setting it up as a new phone per this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Before you restore the iPhone, you will want to follow these steps to preserve the data on your iPhone:
Open Preferences from the Edit Menu.
    Select the Devices tab.
Put a check in the "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" box.
Connect your iPhone and sync (this will create a fresh backup file in iTunes for later).
Once the sync is complete, follow the restore section of the article.
At the end of the restore process, you are presented with two options - restore from backup or setup as a new phone - choose the new phone option.
One of the setup screens gives you a list of options regarding what content you want to sync to the "new" iPhone - sync you contacts, calendars and music (leave Applications out for now to eliminate possible issues caused by third party applications).
Once the sync is complete, test the iPhone with the stereo(s) and headphones.
If the issue persist, you will want to arrange for service either by calling tech support 1-800-my-iphone, or by making a reservation at your local Apple Retail Store via this link:

  • TS1702 I was downloading some music through itunes. half way through the downloads i wanted to check if my songs were ok. i pressed pause and now my itunes want open up. i cant google anything or my facebook wont update either. what happened? can someone

Has anyone had problems once you had downloaded itune. i cant get back into there. It seems to have frozen.

    I have help for you!!!
I had EXACTLY the same issue recently. What I had to do on my PC was go into the My computer section> click on my C drive> click on users> click on my username> go into music and then iTunes> Here you should see something that says iTunes Library. Make sure that iTunes is Closed and then take the iTune library and drag it onto Your desktop. This will create a copy on the desktop but iTunes will not see it. Reopen iTunes and you should see an option to scan for media. Once you do this iTunes should re-build your iTunes library and It should be able to sync. If it syncs fine and all your content is available go to the iTunes library that you dragged to the desktop and delete it as you should not have a new one. If this does not work absolutley do NOT delete the iTunes library that is on the desktop.
Call Apple and let them know of the steps you have taken and request some help. This should fix it though!

  • ITunes no longer syncs podcast pause locations between devices

This is how iTunes used to work: If I was listening to a podcast on my iPod and paused that podcast anywhere in the middle, when I would sync the iPod with iTunes, that pausing point would be remembered by iTunes. Meaning... If I then started playing the same podcast in iTunes (after the sync with my iPod), iTunes would play the podcast starting from the exact same spot I paused it on my iPod.
Likewise, iTunes used to remember and share that pause point BETWEEN my iPod and iPhone. Allowing me to listen to the podcast on the iPod in my car, take the iPod into the house and sync it with iTunes, and then sync my iPhone with iTunes and I could continue listening to the podcast on my iPhone from the same pause point.
With iPhone 3.0.1 installed, iTunes 8.2.1 (6) installed, and Mac OS X 10.6 installed, NONE of the above is true anymore.
If I pause my iPod and sync it with iTunes and then try to play the same podcast in iTunes, it starts from the beginning, no matter where it was originally paused on the iPod. And the pause point is no longer transferred from device to device.
Someone please tell me that these changes are not a new "feature". Please tell me there is hope this will be fixed and SOON! Maybe the remembering of the pause point was causing consternation for some users but, let's face it, it's EASY to go back to the beginning of a podcast and it's impossible to remember where you left on in a given podcast, particularly if you listen to 2 or 3 different ones in a week and don't complete them before switching to another.

Not a single response?!? Is nobody else having this problem?

  • Trying to install the new app for iPhoto and is now paused and I can't get it working

In the process of downloading the iPhoto app and got stalled and is now stuck on "paused" and I can't get it to "unpause" and download the app. What should I do?

In order to manage and track the apps you purchase, iTunes requires an account with either a credit card or iTunes card. If the app is free you won't be charged anything, but you still need a method of payment set up.

  • ITunes freezes briefly when un-pausing near the end of a long file

On the 1.6GHz G5 pro, 10.5.7 and iTunes 8.2 (and the problem occurred in earlier versions as well).
I wouldn't notice this issue with 3-5 minute songs, but it's getting to be a problem with e.g. podcasts of several hours' duration. When the elapsed time cursor is over, say 30 minutes into a file, and I un-pause the playback, it will take maybe 5 seconds to begin playing. During this time, the only functioning element of the computer is the mouse cursor, and that only in movement. Clicks are queued but do not apply until the playback starts. Keyboard input is likewise queued. Monitoring the system with top(1) in the terminal or using the system monitor doesn't reveal anything - the displays freeze until play restarts. The system even stops responding to pings. Here's the trick - if I un-pause the replay even further into the track, say, an hour and fifteen minutes, it can take up to fifteen seconds of freeze before everything starts working again. If I pause, drag the time cursor back to the beginning, and hit play, play starts immediately and I can drag the cursor back to where I was with no freeze or interruption. It's only when I un-pause into a long file that the system freezes.
    Any ideas?

I did find a workaround - note the time, drag the slider back to the beginning, and un-pause. It will start immediately. Then, drag the slider back to where you were in the file. It works, but it's really annoying, especially since this problem never happened until recently.

  • I can't get the movie to play right, it keeps pausing and skipping

I bought a movie on itunes a when i try to watch it keeps pausing and skipping. how do i fix this, so i can watch it

Check in iTunes - got to the store home page with the small house icon.
On the right side of teh screen under QuickLinks is there a Purchased section?
If so check if this had Movies/Films when you click it, if so hopefully purchases will show up.  If you uncheck the box for HD downloads you may then be able to get the SD version.
Also in iTunes Preferences for the Store you can select preferred HD resolution of 720p or 1080p for downloading.
If you don't have a section for previous purchases contact iTunes support and tell them the issue.

  • Iphone pauses and flips to cover flow and back with other earphones

If I use any other earphones than the ones that are provided, my iphone pauses and plays randomly, and flips to cover flow and back without any movement... any help?

Connect the two devices that are showing large backups to your computer and check the capacity guage in iTunes to see how large "Other" is.  Sometimes this can grow to be extrememly large, requiring you to restore the device to reduce it to a more reasonable level (approx. 1GB).
