ITunes library and Boot Camp (Snow Leopard and Windows 7)

At the moment, I'm using a Macbook Pro running both OS X and Windows 7 Ultimate using Bootcamp to facilitate this.
The problem that I have is that I keep my iTunes library on an external HDD. In OS X, this isn't a problem as the OS X version of iTunes manages the music on it; adding new podcasts that it downloads and also adding new CDs that I rip to the HDD.
In Windows 7, I installed iTunes and have only run a single "Add folder to library", meaning that only the music that was on the HDD on the first instance is recognised by iTunes. This means that if I were to switch from Windows 7 to OS X, download some podcasts and then go back into Windows 7, iTunes in Windows 7 won't find these new podcasts.
The other (and nowhere near important issue) is that if I forget to disconnect my iPhone before switching over to Windows 7, iTunes in Windows 7 will wipe the apps from it.
Does anyone know how I may be able to resolve this

Your iMac supports OS X Mavericks, so make a backup of your files in Mac OS X and Windows, open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks for free. Check that your apps are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com
OS X Mavericks includes Boot Camp Assistant 5, but it's compatible with Macs that can only use Boot Camp 4. Note that you only have the Boot Camp Assistant as the version 5, and not the drivers or anything else, so there's no problem in installing a 32-bit Windows 7 version if you want. Also, you won't lose your Windows copy after upgrading to OS X Mavericks, so don't worry

  • Install boot camp snow leopard and mountain lion

Is it possible to install boot camp on a 2009 Mac Pro to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion? The startup drive is already partitioned. I need to run two different versions of Final Cut Studio (and all the accompanying apps) and this seems the best way to keep them segregated. I know that I can run them both in Snow Leopard, but I have two different sets of Motion templates which need to be accessed.

Alrighty, I do appreciate your time. I had already tried parallels and that was a huge waste of time. You blow away their support, by the way.
Just to confirm assumptions before I do this, sorry, I'm an engineer.
    1. The startup drive is partitioned already.
    2. Partition (1) contains Snow Leopard and a user account.
    3. Partition (2) currently contains a media library, does not have an OS on it, and has 232 GB free.
    4. I will install Mountain Lion on partition 2 using the dmg downloaded from the app store.
    5. That partition will then become the startup drive when using mountain lion.
    6. Partition 2 will have its own user account, applications, etc.
Almost forgot. Do I need to erase and install on that partition or can I simply install? After this I owe you a beer.

  • Boot Camp - Snow Leopard MAJOR ISSUE

Ok, I'm sort of new to the Apple arena and have been running a MacPro under BootCamp with Windows XP on the other side. I set BootCamp up to run Windows priority and thus to get the Apple side I held down the Alt key at start up and selected Mac HD to go to Apple.
Furthermore, I been working on the Apple side more and more to learn FCP. So, I recently updated FCS2 to FCS3 . . AND . . while at it updated to Snow Leopard. Now comes the change and the problem.
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I had not started up Windows even once, because the boot up priority changed from Windows default to Mac default. Now perhaps that should have alarmed me but it didn't because again I am trying to get more FCP screen time to learn it and thus decided I liked that boot process and would just leave it.
Well, today I booted with the Alt key and selected Windows and sure enough Windows booted HOWEVER the mouse will move all over the screen BUT it cannot click or select anything on the screen. Also, when moving the cursor to the task bar an hour meter appears AND one can do nothing. In addition, right click does nothing and CntlAltDel does nothing, nor does Esc or any other key(s) for that matter.
I have two MAJOR pieces of work on the Windows side that I need to finish up that include over 200 man hours of work and even if I could just get it running for a matter of one day I would be fine because as I have already said, I am moving to FCP and those two are all that is left in Avid.
Any suggestions? Please anyone help. The one project could result in a major lawsuit that could cost me over 4000 + legal + the over 200 hours I have paid for already. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

OK I got it working but what a nightmare. I will outline it here for those so coming to the same threshold.
    If the above happens try:
    1. Boot and chose Win disc couple times.
    2. Boot and chose Mac disc and insert the SL and explore not install.
    3. Shut down.
    4. Boot and chose Win disc.
    5. Screen should now be operatble and the keyboard and mouse functional.
    6. The last option is Boot Camp drivers.
Don't go haywire when it uninstalls all the drivers then installs them and they are not all there. Also, I'm not sure you even have to do all this although I let it in accordance with the way it suggested it wanted and it took me forever to get it all straightened up and I'm still updating Windows and the like.
Also, IE 8.0 simply WILL NOT install nor open any more and thus no Windows Updates. Looks like my Windows/BootCamp update has been ruined by the SL update. Bummer, cuz I will now have to re-set-up the 2, XW8200's that I just disassembled to get rid of and thus I'll be back on PC/Windows . . again!! :o(

  • Boot Camp Snow leopard Help! Please answer!

I want to run Win 7 through Boot camp. I have to back up my drive and reformat my hard drive. I have Snow Leopard installed. But the installation disk for my mac is Leopard. Will I lose Snow Leopard when i reformat?

    HI Michael,
If you reformat the drive before using BootCamp you will have to reinstall Snow Leopard on the Mac OS X partition.
Reformatting completely erases the hard disk.
I highly recommend you read the BootCamp Setup and Installation Guide before you do anything.
*Make sure and back up all important data first before reformatting the hard drive.*

  • Itunes Library and Windows 7

    Hey guys,
Have a simple query that is not as such causing a problem. I was using a Windows XP machine and if I downloaded or imported a track a new folder would appear in my iTunes folder called the album name etc with tracks included, I would then have two copies of that album one in iTUnes one in the downloaded folder.
Now I am using Windows 7 (and I don't think this is the issue) but when I import a folder now into my iTunes library the XML code is updated but no new folders are added. Instead they remain in the place i downloaded them too and iTunes points to that folder. Is there a way to tell iTunes to create a folder with its own iTunes directory and then point to THAT folder rather than the downloading folder?? If this is not possible can I just copy and paste the album folder containing the songs into my iTUnes folder and then when iTunes asks me to look for the folder to find the song point it to its own folder? Christ this is getting complicated now! Sorry! Hope this will make sense to other users! Thanks in advance. The main reason I ask is because I would like all of my album folders in the iTunes folder so when I backup everything is included. Thanks guys.

Sorting in iTunes is often controlled by selecting different column headings. The sort order for any given column may be further modified by a sort value, e.g. Sort Artist affects the sort order of Artist. If you transferred the library properly all of the metadata should have remained intract and you simply need to select the a column that sorts as you want. If you had to import the library then there is the potential for tagging effects that could mean metadata entered previously didn't import with the media. Note that iTunes has no mechanism for automatically deciding which values are in <Forename> <Surname> order and could therefore be sorted as <Surname> <Forename>. The only automatic process drops leading articles (a/an/the) so that "The Doors" sort under D as "Doors".

  • Boot Camp & Snow Leopard

Hi forum. I've used BC on 10.5 often. It works great.
    My question is this:
Does anyone know if there are any differences with the BC Drivers on the 10.5 DVD compared to the BC Drivers on the 10.6 DVD? Assuming there are BC Drivers on 10.6 DVD. I haven't tried it yet. Also, my main reason for asking this is I wonder if there are drivers optimized for Windows 7 RC?
    Thanks for your comments.

    Thanks for your quick response!
One last question... you say new drivers... does that mean UPDATED WINDOWS DRIVERS or just the same drivers but "newer" because it's on a newer disc.
I would agree with what you said however that there is probably not any Windows 7 specific drivers as it isn't public yet. My guess is that the "newer" drivers are most likely the same as on 10.5 but with SW for the new MBP's and other HW.
    Thanks.

  • My iMac will not boot through Snow Leopard but will boot through Windows OS

My 2010 iMac will not boot in Snow Leopard, only Windows. Have tried reinstalling Snow leopard a few times and works only for a couple of minutes before freezing and doesnt reboot. Windows works perfect. Snow leopard just doesnt want to boot up past the Apple Logo. It was working fine one day and the next day it froze up and was able to reboot back into Snow Leopard but kept freezing. Now it doesnt load at all into Mac OS.

    Possible scenarios:
1: The 10.6.3 SL retail disk is bad, it happens.
2: Your not using the 10.6.3 SL retail disk but one from another machine which doesn't have the drivers for that machine.
3: Your optical drive is funky or some other hardware issues.
4: Your trying to install 10.6 onto a PowerPC based Mac, no can do.
5: Your not using a wired keyboard for boot key commands, have some other hardware conflicts.
    Possible solutions.
1: Copy the SL 10.6.3 disk using Disk Utility to another DVD, the error checking may resolve the original disk's issue.
    http://www.brokenhomeboy.co.uk/pierow/blog/2011/10/make-a-bootable-backup-snow-l eopard-install-disc/
2: Make a SL bootable USB
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
3: Call Apple for a new 10.6.3 disk (and make copies for backup before Apple discontinues selling it)
If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • Dual Boot with Snow Leopard and Mavericks not possible?

I have a Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 2,3 GHz i7 Quad and two 512 GB SSDs (the secondary disk in an optical drive bay enclosure). This Macbook Pro can run Snow Leopard and Mavericks on the primary disk without problems. When I try to set up a dual boot system however, problems appear and it looks like it is not possible. When I start from Snow Leopard, I cannot select Mavericks as a start volume and vice versa. The error message says something like "Bless tool" cannot use this disk, i.e. unmount and boot from it. The problem remains when I exchange the disks (putting the primary disk in the drive enclosure and vice versa). When I put the secondary drive in an external case however, it is possible to boot from it -  but strange things happen when the system starts: My computer clock is reset to 1/1/2001, WiFI passwords are not remembered for more than one session, disk permissions are reported as "repaired" but do apear as not repaired when I check them again - and other issues). I have verified both disks already and repaired permissions but that does not change the situation. So my experience is different from what is said in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/566781. It looks like the latest Mavericks cannot coexist with Snow Leopard on neiter a secondary internal drive nor on an external drive. This is strange since both disks and systems work flawless when run alone. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

When I check the Mavericks disk in the optical drive with disk utility after booting / running Snow Leopard on the primary disk I get som errors, see below ("disk utility Info"). So after all, I decided to erase the disk and install Mavericks new. But even erasing the disk is not possible when it is in the optical drive enclosure. I get this error message:
"Volume Erase failed with the error:
    Could not unmount disk"
When I put this disk into an external case connected via USB however, it starts and runds MAvericks without any Problem. Same happens when I put thie Mavericks disk into the internal primary hard disk place.

  • Unable to set up a dual boot for Snow Leopard and Lion

I'm running an early 2011 MacBook Pro.  I originally ran this machine with Snow leopard for quite a while.  I've got 8 GB RAM and lots of free space on my hard drive.  I upgraded to Lion and it works well.  But I want to boot to Snow Leopard from an external drive to run some old Rosetta apps.  However, I couldn't run the Snow Leopard installation disk on the Lion Machine.  When I tried to boot to the installation disk, I would get a beeping sound during startup, three beeps in a row - repeating, and it would not boot.  So I connected the external to another machine running Snow Leopard and I installed a new version of Snow Leopard on the external drive.  But my Lion machine will not boot from that external.  I am able to select the Snow Leopard drive in the Start Up Disk pane in the prefs. But when I restart, I just get the three beeps.  I must be missing something here.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not in cases when the computer successfully boots to one OS but produces three beeps when an attempt is made to boot it to another. If it really was a RAM problem that serious, the computer wouldn't get as far as checking the OS version, and it has no problems booting Lion. In the event of a minor RAM problem, it wouldn't produce three beeps like that at all.

  • Had to rebuild iTunes library and it won't accept most of the videos it previously had? Why?

I'm having a strange problem with iTunes -
My boot hard drive recently crashed and took iTunes and my library with it. Fortunately I had all of the music and video files themselves backed up on another drive. When I reinstalled the OS and iTunes and then attempted to add all of the music and video files back into the new, blank iTunes, it accepted all of my music files but it kept crashing when I tried to add the video files back in.
The details: using a 24" iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X version 10.9.4 both before and after the hard drive crash, and iTunes version 11.2.2 was my working copy of iTunes with all of my media files happily loaded in it's library, but the newly installed iTunes was at first 11.3.0 and now 11.3.1. Neither with version 11.3.0 nor 11.3.1 will it load all the video files into the library (haven't tried downgrading to 11.2.2, maybe I should? but we'll get to that in a minute).
I have about 300 video files of several different file types (.mpg, .mp4, .m4v, .mov) which over the years I had added to iTunes as I acquired them, and at the time of the hard drive failing, they were ALL in my iTunes library and I'd never had iTunes reject any file types. They all played fine as well as being a part of the library. And since I had added them over the years, they were added during quite a few different versions of iTunes as it was upgraded over time.
So, after I added all the music back into iTunes on the new drive, I attempted to add the videos all at one go, but it crashed after only 5 or so files being incorporated. Thinking it may have been too many at once, I tried adding them in smaller batches, but had the same problem. I took a look at what it had added before crashing each time, and found that every time it would load only mpeg 4 files, either .mp4 or .m4v, and would crash as soon as it encountered an .mpg or .mov. So I added all 50 or so of the mpeg 4's, and then tried adding the .mov and .mpg files individually and found that no matter which one it was, it was apparently the file type it didn't like, not the individual files themselves. Randomly trying about 75 led me to that conclusion, but I didn't try all 250, so I guess it's possible there might be some .mpg's it would take, however I only had about 10 .mov files and it won't take ANY of them. Considering all of these files regardless of their type were part of my old iTunes library for years and worked just fine, I don't understand why it won't take them again. I tried adding them by dragging them to the open iTunes pane, and by using the import command, and neither way works, all that happens is it crashes. Every time.
I tried converting these files to mpeg 4 types, and when I do that, it will take the converted version. However, a lot of them don't come out right when converting them, either the audio is messed up or the dimensions of the movie are incorrect and stretched or squished. It seems I could fix this problem by making sure every video file I add is an mpeg 4, but since I'm having so much trouble converting them properly and it's terribly time consuming, I was hoping someone would have insight into this strange, strange problem. I tried to see if this was a known issue with iTunes, that it only takes mpeg 4 files now, but I can't find anything about that. Anyone know if that's the case? And therefore hopefully an upcoming patch will fix it? Or is it just a weird, weird problem with me only?
Very frustrating, hopefully someone can help me out. Even if there's no apparent fix, maybe someone can recommend a good application for converting movie files that is easy enough to use for someone who's not familiar with the process, i.e. maybe it can auto-detect things like the audio quality and dimensions so it comes out right without me having to be a real whiz at it? Thank you all very much in advance for your help!

OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again.

Delete the broken links in iTunes then look at your purchased list to redownload.
If this happened because you were deleting files from the iTunes folder in Finder, don't.  You have to let iTunes do all the deleting and moving or you will end up with broken links.

There is no playlist for iBooks, butther eis nothing to preent you from choosing to download specific titles from itunes, or syncing just specific titles to an individual device.

  • How do I share iTunes Library and Playlists

I had a desktop mac with 2 login accounts, we enjoy having our own spaces, mail, desktops, prefs, etc.. but we do not wish to duplicate nor keep either one out of our digital assests, ie music, photos, etc..
I used to have an alias to the other users itunes library and all was fine. He is the predominant music purchaser in the house and I have full access to even his latest purchases.
Upon buying a new machine, 1.66GHz duo core mini we seem to have lost this ability. If I make an alias now, when I launch itunes it says cannot find the folder itunes, it seems to now know its a folder it must find and not an alias to one. I have read ideas about sharing and fast user switching, not really the solution I am looking for or used to have. I think many couples find themselves in a similar situation. Seems silly that we now have to be logged in one side to play/stream music in the house and make sure we are logged into the other side whenever we connect the digital camera.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
