Itunes: Movies, TV shows, will Apple be legally required to add subtitles?

Subject says it all. Obama recently signed a Technology Access Bill For Disabled. As an individual with a lifelong severe hearing loss, here's hoping that this will finally force Apple into supporting the deaf community through supplying subtitles with all their movie and TV purchases/rentals.

Chris - all the material supplied by contents providers nearly always do have subtitles already from TV and DVD broadcasts.
That these content providers are unable to supply this from iTunes 99% of the time, suggests that Apple's own system is the blocking point and they need to address this pretty soon or lose their market position.
There are nearly 5 million hits on Google about Apple's failure to provide this so the demand is clearly there. I hope they dont ignore it.

Saving iTunes Movies/TV Shows to an external hard drive

I need to free up space on my dell laptop so I would like to move my iTunes movies/tv shows to an external hard drive while keeping my music on my internal hard drive. So I would like to have two different libraries, one for music on my internal and one for movies/tv shows on my external. What is the simplest way to do this without wiping out my movie collection?

You can create multiple libraries with a shift-start of itunes.

Press AND HOLD the shift key while starting itunes, and create a new library on your exHD.
Name it something like Movies - don't take the default itunes1 name which will not make sense later.
The new library will be blank. Before you do anything, change the itunes preferences > Advanced tab.
The "Copy to itunes Media Folder" and options needs to be turned ON.
You need to change the itunes media folder location to your exHD.
Now, go to your internal HD to the Movies folder using Win Explorer. Drag that Movie folder and drop it onto iTunes (the source list over on the left, onto the word LIBRARY).
Another way to do it is itunes menu > File > Add folder to library
Repeat for the TV shows folder.
This will copy the files to your exHD, since you already changed the preference to "Copy to itunes Media Folder"
Make sure you can play a few seconds of several movies/TV show to satisfy yourself that it all went well.
Double-check the file locations in iTunes by doing a right-click > show in Windows Explorer.
They should be on your exHD.
The files will still be on your internal drive. You can either delete them using itunes or Win Explorer.
If you use Win Explorer, you'll get ! file not found marks in your original music library.
Things to remember about using multiple libraries:
1) iTunes always uses the last library it opened. You have to remember to shift-start between libraries.
2) Every time you do a shift-start, double-check the iTunes preferences advanced to make sure the "itunes media location" and "copy to itunes" is set how you want.
3) It is easy to forget which library you last had opened, so train yourself to always use a shift-start.

Please understand I am a frustrated customer like you, , but the availability of movies that have been shown before is dependant on licencing from the rights owners. Sky quite rightly have to pay the film studios for the ability to show to Sky's customers. As I understand it they purchase the right for a period of time, hence when the right expires then it has to be removed. The costing of the movies does reflect on the anticipated popularity of the programme, hence an older less popular movie might seem expensive but if not many people watch and pay that would be right. The apparent silliness of having movies in the store and on demand, allows those people who do not have a movie subscription to rent the movie on a one off basis. I agree that Sky seem to be licencing some programmes for shorter periods and it really upsets me when movies appear in buy and keep but not available to rent only. I recently queried Sky about Fortitude being available in OnDemand until 2022!, then of course found out that Sky owns the rights of the series. I can only say be careful if you are a movies subscriber and wish to watch a movie, not to select the Sky Store version if it is available in the Movies on Demand section. I recently wanted to watch a film that I found in Sky store at a cost, and just to be sure I searched for it and found it was to be shown on Channel 4 in a few days. I don't think we'll ever understand how such decision are made as to how long they licence movies for and how the charging model works with the film studios. Logically you would think that a smallish fee to have available indefinately and to pay the studio fee based on the number of rentals would be better, but that might be difficult to administer and Sky would have to have extra server storage fees, which they outsource. You don't use Airplay. You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.

I must admit to having moved to iCloud to do this some while ago.
I had presumed the wording in iTunes and the big Sync button at the bottom did actually mean Sync.
However it seems you are explaining it is similar to the iMessages "Sync" across devices which is in fact actaully only "Display on All Devices". (What you do with an iMessage on one device does not effect it on another).

You could try downloading and installing 7-Zip (free) and downloading a fresh copy of the iTunes installer, unpack the installer into its components using 7-Zip then try a standalone install of AppleApplicationSupport. It may still fail to install but if so you may get useful error messages as to why not.

Movies in my iMac's iTunes do not show up Apple TV(1st Gen)

So frustrated. Movies in my iMac's iTunes do not show up on my Apple TV(1st Gen) in the Shared Movie area. I've done the Media Type fix to "movie." I've re-started and re-booted and changed the Apple TV from ethernet to wireless and re-connected iTunes. Renamed the library. Everything's up to date. Grrr.

I have now restored Factory Settings on the Apple TV. Looked promising until iTunes hangs everytime I tried to enter the podcast page of the sync options. And I get errors that my newest movies, created in Final Cut Pro X with the Share with 720p Apple Devices export settings are not compatible with Apple TV.

ITunes movies not showing up on Apple TV

I'm having some trouble with my movies not showing up on Apple TV.
The movies I am missing are not purchased from iTunes but I have converted them using Handbrake. I've double checked the format and they seem to be what's required from what I've read in other threads.
I've also made sure they are in the "movies" category and not "home movies."
I'm not the most computer savy person... most of what I know is just from reading threads. Can someone help?

RogerOut makes some good points and this feels to me like a ham fisted attempt by Apple to take control of my media in a way that I don't want. The stuff it is choosing to call "home movie" is 100% legit movies, but not ones I bought through the itunes store. So I load a movie and then it mysteriously does not show up in my Apple TV because it has defaulted to "home movie".
What I still fail to understand is what the heck is the purpose of this apart from annoying users who's stuff now does not appear on ATV without explanation or warning. So glad to have this forum to help me, but why should I have to do this to figure out how to overcome a stupid thing that Itunes is doing to my movie (it is a movie!)?
As I say though, what possible benefit is it for a users media to be labelled in this way and anyway, why does calling it a home movie make it unreadable in ATV?

The content was purchased on my previous Apple TV 1 and stored in a connected itunes library via my iMac. The TV shows are all there and eveything else seems to be working find. Home sharing is ON. As the previous response said, you can't burn your iTunes movie to a DVD. The Apple TV will be a great option but you have others as well.
The easiest option is to use the iPod Video which can connect directly to a TV's RCA jacks for video output. If you have an iPod Video then you simply need to buy a cable and you are ready to go--easy and portable. This is great for hotel rooms!
Another option, depending on your computer's and TV's input/output jacks, is to connect your computer directly to your TV. I have an inexpensive Windows XP mini-tower equiped with a cheap dual monitor video card that allows me to output composite-video, s-video, VGA and DVI. Some cards also support component video.
If this sounds to complicated, and you have a widescreen TV with component video inputs, then I would wait for the Apple TV. http://www.apple.com/appletv/

Image capture from itunes movie/ tv show purchases and rentals ?

I'd like to get screen grabs (preferably high quality images) from itunes movies for personal use. Is there any way to do this with Lion ? I have tried Snapz Pro already and just get the chequered grey and white image.
My macbook pro does not have a disk drive so this is purely for stuff from itunes which I believe cannot be played through VLC or quicktime etc. Any help would be much appreciated !

Yes, you can purchase and download directly from the iPad. Use the iTunes app. The iTunes Store interface on the iPad only displays a limited selection of the available content, so for many items you may need to use the Search.
As to Netflix, they have an app for the iPad:

I don't know about other sources for TV shows, though there may well be. I know of no other sources for feature films at this time.

instead, get an external HD and let iTunes move the files to it. courtesy of *Chris CA* come these instructions:

can't get downloaded itune movies to open.any tips?

I have three computers that are practicably clones of each other and the new itunes update failed on two of them but one worrked fine. Here is fix that worked for me. This fix was suggested by another member but I cannot recall or find his post. My system is WinXP sp3 with all the latest patches.
1. Download AirPort Utility 5.5.1 for Windows http://support.apple.com/downloads/
2. Open task Manager and stop the mdnsresponder process. The corrupted mdnsresponder will be using 50% of your cpu.
3. Open control panel / add remove programs. Find the bonjour app and click on it.
4. Note the corrupted version of bonjour 2.0.0.34 by clicking on the support link.
5. Uninstall bonjour
6. Restart Windows.
7. Install the AirPort Utility. This will install a good working version of mdnsresponder. Restart windows again.
8. Upon restart you will see a new the airport icon in your task tray. You can also find mdnsresponder.exe running under process in task manger with little or no cpu usage. Your bonjour app under add remove panel will now be version 1.0.106

Itunes purchased tv show will not play on atv

I recently purchased my ATV and have synced my itunes. I downloaded season 5 of "The Shield" from the itunes store. The shows play on my computer and show up under "My TV Shows" but no picture. There is a bar at the bottom of the black screen showing run time and a gear turning. Sometimes it shows the run time count going forward but, other times it stays at zero. I also intermittently get a message that says "There are no tv shows on your apple tv" or if the show is there it will say something like "cannot play..format not recognized". I am very frustrated and ready to send this thing back.

(1) Like you I can stream video content acquired outside of iTunes to my Apple TV, but I can't appear to play any video purchased on iTunes. On the other hand, music I've purchased plays fine and since my music collection no longer includes protected files I'm of the opinion that this is most likely a DRM issue.
I don't know whether this issue appeared after iTunes 10.5 or the Apple TV 4.4.2 update.
It is of some importance to me that Apple resolves this quickly.
(2) I am not experiencing any issues with the bottom right hand output selection. Have you tried disconnecting from your network, starting something and then reconnecting to see if that resolves the issue?
