ITunes My Movies - Sort by year in genres view

Hello everyone,
I'm not sure if it's a topic already solved but so far I didn't found it anywhere.
Anyway, what I wonder is
In the iTunes My Movies section you have 3 kinds of viewing. "Movies" "Movie List" "Genres"
Each one have different type of sorting
In "Movies" and "Movie List" every sorting works fine
In "Genres", even if I select the "by Year" sorting it will continue to sort it by title...
Any clues?

Not having a lot of luck with iTunes 11.
I am deep with a large number of albums by certain Artist (The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, Van Morrison, etc. ...). To manage my collection I have given (for example) "The Beatles" their own Genre. So, when I'm in "Genre View" I want my Beatle albums sorted by "Year" and not Alphabetical.
Both "Genre View" and "Artists View" seem to be static and the number of sorting options are limited.
I'm I missing something?

Navigating iTunes store movies in iPad

OK, I hope I am missing something, but this is driving me a bit mad.
Is it possible to navigate the iTunes Store movies and TV collection by genre, on your iPad? It is possible within iTunes on the Mac, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to do it on the iPad.
All I can do is see the top charts, or a Genius list, or Featured ... but there seems to be no way to choose to browse, for example, all movies in the Family genre.
Can anyone help? Am I just being particularly dense today?

I know that content differs from country to country depending upon laws and restrictions of the country and the content being licensed in that country, but it seems that the button should be there if you have the Movies tab in iTunes in the music section. Typically, if content is not available, the tab will not show up at all.
Try doing a search for anything in the movies section and then cancel the search. See if the button shows up. Try quitting iTunes completely as well and then try again. This is a copy and paste that I keep handy for quick "generic" fixes. You can try these as well.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quitting iTunes - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Did you figure this out? Am having the same problem.
EDIT:
Found the group in store (in this case Juana Molina) It said music -> alternative
Changed to column view, and could not find the artist at all in any of the sub categories.
iTunes is really the biggest pain in the .... and has gotten worse over the years.

ITunes 11 - how can I change the genre of a movie now?

So I've had iTunes 11 for about 3 hours now and so far it *****. One of my main problems is I can't find how I can change the genre of a movie anymore. I used to do this from Get Info so I could organise all my movies in to my own genres that make sense to me which helps me find what I want to watch when using Apple TV.
It will still let me do that for movies I bought before I "upgraded" to 11 but for the movies I bought this evening, after upgrading, the genre drop down is locked down.
Am I just looking in the wrong place? Or have Apple somehow got the idea that pointlessly preventing your customers from organising their content in their own way is somehow an improvement and I'm stuck with their nonsensical genre classifications?
Same thing goes for movie titles now I think of it - I've edited movie titles after purchase (e.g. I've put HP1 in front of the title of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and HP2 in front of Chamber of Secrets) so that series list in watching order, rather than alphabetical order, on my Apple TV. It's not letting me do that from Get Info either
Please someone tell me I'm just doing it wrong - I don't think I've the patience to jump through the hoops necessary to get 10.7 back!

I had the same bug in songs. It was directly related to tracks purchased in the iTunes store, they wouldn't allow any changes, it was all grayed out.
Here's how I got around it. When I selected more than one item and any other item was not from the iTunes store it would allow me to Get Info and change everything with no problems.
My suggestion is that if you need to, add in a movie from your hard drive (anything at all, it will be a dummy placeholder) that you can you use to select along with the one you need to change. Use command click to select non-contiguous files (even works in different genres), then get info (or command i) and then change your info. You can keep using the same dummy file for as long as you need to to fix the files with incorrect info, then delete it when done.

In iTunes I click on a song and when I click on the "get info" tab, it opens up but everything is gray - locked, therefore, I cannot edit the year or genre of the songs. Not every song is locked, only certain ones for some reason. Any help?

I ran into the same problem, I think that, If you tab on a song that is on your IPOD, and the song data is grayed-out, I think it means that the song is probably twice on your IPOD and that the iTunes directory can not edit THAT song data for two (or more) files @once. Check if this is the case, sinceI have the same problem,am looking for a way to have One and the same song in more playlists but only keep the song once on the IPOD.

Can I sort iTouch apps by Genre like in iTunes?

In iTunes I have the option to sort my apps by Genre. I know I can (with the new OS upgrade)create folders, but I'm wondering if I can spare myself the work and just sort the apps by these Genres on my touch? I started making folders and found limits with how many apps they would hold. This seems like a much easier way - does anyone know if it's possible?

You can customize the layout of icons on the Home screen—including the Dock

You can put up to 12 icons into a folder. iPod touch automatically names a folder when you create it, based on the initial icon you use to create the folder, but you can change the name anytime you want. Like individual icons, folders can be rearranged by dragging them around the Home screen. Folders can be moved to a new Home screen or to the Dock.

ITunes 11 needs to fix how it sorts "By Year"

I always organize my music by year, followed "By Title". And each album has songs that were released a year later from the time the whole album was released. Unlike before, iTunes sorts by year BASED ON THE FIRST TRACK. That is no longer the case. Any other song that has a year above iTunes will sort to base on that.
For example, Olly Murs' debut album release year is 2010 though track no.4 "Busy" was released in 2011. iTunes will sort the album by year according to track no.4 as if the entire album was released in 2011 when the other tracks are 2010.Now all my albums are not in their yearly order.
Apple, please fix this and sort by the first track's order.

ITunes automatically re-sorts movies

Hello - I'm a pretty Type-A person, so I like to have my iTunes movies sorted a certain way. For instance, I have all 4 Burton/Schumacher batman films followed by the Nolan trilogy. To accomplish this in the past, I have used the "sort" fields. However, recently, it seems that after closing and re-opening, iTunes ignores those sort fields. The Dark Knight movies are back with the D's. The funny thing is, when I get info on these movies, everything I put in the sort fields are still present, so I just hit okay, and iTunes sorts the movies back to where I had intended.
While this is a minor thing in life - my Type A'ness is making this a HUGE thing.
Any suggestions?
MBP running 10.9.1 and iTunes 11.1.4.

Hi ... same thing for me, for the last week or so iTunes on my MacBookPro has started redownloading apparently 'random' albums again despite songs being present in library ... sometimes it will start redownloading more than 100 tracks, and it moves the old files to the Trash. Does anyone know what is going on, and why this has 'suddenly' started happening?

Sort by year

I'd really love to sort my music by 'year' within my ipod, i.e. the same as you can sort by 'album', 'artist', 'genre' etc. I can bring up the 'year' column in itunes, however, can't find an option to duplicate this onto my ipod. I'd happily swap 'genre' for 'year' on my ipod as i never use the former as a pathway to a song / album when selecting music.
Any suggestions welcome.

In Song View, Add the Year column and then click on its heading. That appears to be the only way to do it.

Movies selection by rating, actor, genre - have apple missed something?

Look, am I missing something or can Apple not be bothered developing the software for the ATV? I am loading movies and realised there is no other way of selecting a movie appart from the A-Z list, how daft if that? Yet iTunes has a genre tab and you can create a playlist for movies (which wont then copy to the ATV!). Should it also not limit covers for those movies that meet the parenal controls, some covers should not be seen, eg horror for instance. So come on Apple, the id tags are there let's use them so we can select by rating, actor, genre, year etc...

Yeah.. Genre is there so as long as your movies are tagged with a genre, you will see Genres above the A-Z list of movies when you go to the My Movies section. (you didnt say you were doing this, but if you are encoding movies use Meta-X for tagging... thats all I will say, just google it fill in the rest)
As far as being able to list by Actor, Rating, Year, and the rest it wouldn't suprise me if that gets added at some point. Thats the great thing about apple tv is that if you are missing a feature now, you might see it sooner or later.

When I purchase ITunes music, and it is a song from a Greatest Hits album, the Year of the song shows the year the CD was released and not the year the song was released (i.e. a song may be from 1986, but the Greatest Hits album was released in 1999, so my songs in ITunes show 1999). So, I go into each of those songs and change it to the year that I want to be displayed. As long as I don't exit out of ITunes, it will show the year that I changed it to (i.e. the 1986 year in this case). But if I exit out of ITunes and then return to ITunes, the year reverts back to 1999. The same happens if I change the genre of a song from, say 'Pop' to 'Alternative', it will revert back the next time I log in.
Oddly enough, as soon as I right-click on that song to change it back, the year/genre that I had entered returns.
How can I make it so my changes are permanently displayed as I want them? This is pretty annoying when I try to find a song on my Ipod under a certain genre, but it doesn't appear in that genre because the incorrect information gets synched to the Ipod.

Make sure that these two options in Edit > Preferences > Store are turned off:
Then exit iTunes and open it up again. Your metadata entries should then be persistent - with these options checked iTunes will be comparing what you have with the information held in the iTunes Store, and will overwrite with the latter for Store purchases (and if you have iTunes Match). If you have any iOS devices you should also turn off Show All Music under Settings > Music.

Itunes ipod movie sync problem

I have a bunch of videos on my ipod but just recently all the movies sort themselves in music instead of movies(on my ipod). when i sync a new movie it sorts itself under movies.
my question is: how do i get all my movies to show up under movies.;
and yes i tried changing the media kind to movie. but that dosnt fix the problem.any help is awesome!

I had something similar happen to me, this is just a shot in the dark. I had set my iTunes to play on a remote speaker that was connected via an Airport Express. Any time a video came up, only the audio part played, because a video can only play on the local machine. I think it's the latest "remote audio" solution.
I had to tell iTunes to play from the local machine, then it was fine.

Itunes / ipod column sort locked?

When looking at my ipod via itunes the column sort is locked on sort by "Genre" and i can't change it? When looking at my computer files it works fine it's just on the ipod? I know it worked last week? not sure if i did something or ???

I'm having the same problem with my iphone. When I click the "manually manage music, it prompts me that the iphone is synced with another library. Do i want to erase this iphone and sync with this itunes library?
Of course I dont want to do this! My iphone is "synced" with my computer at home, while at work, I'd like to listen to music to my iphone through my work mac (which has no mp3s on it) using itunes. Annoying!
Anyone find a third party solution to this?

ITunes not updating sorting in iTunes Music folder

I have enabled "Keep iTunes Music folder organized". iTunes will properly sort files based on the ID3 data when I first import them, but it does not update the filenames or folder names when I change song information from within iTunes. I don't know what the exact behavior of this option is supposed to be. iTunes says it "Places files into album and artist folders, and names the files based on disc number, track number, and the song title." This description is consistent with its behavior when importing tracks but does not say whether it will continue to move things afterward.
I'd like to know what the exact behavior of this option is supposed to be and if there is a way to force an update of the sorting. I'm thinking re-importing would work, but I've got 25,000 songs so that would be an unwieldy last resort at best.
