ITunes on networked drive

My household is networked via some Windows NT protocol. I'm the only one in my house who uses a Mac. There is a share which has our music on it (ripped from discs we own, every piece of it legal as church on Sunday).
I can get to the share with the music just fine. I can put all of the songs in an iTunes library, assuming I'm patient -- about 20G of music, and it takes forever and ever, but it can be done. Here are my problems.
The person running the music share claims that iTunes "messes up" the files, it rearranges where the files are within the directories, and even mucks around with the directories. Does this happen when I add files? Can I prevent it?
Music is added to the share directly, which means it doesn't go through iTunes to get indexed -- or whatever you call it -- and I don't know about the new music unless someone mentions it or I go looking. Is there any way to get iTunes, under these circumstances, to add new music that I'm not adding to my library.
Finally, is it possible to switch between libraries? I have a library of just my own stuff that no one else cares about on my private external drive. Can I (easily) switch from the one library to the other.
Thank you.

Here are some answers:
1) to avoid iTunes "messing with the folders": Preferences->Advanced (general)->Check OFF "keep iTunes Music folder organized and "Copy files to iTUnes Music folder"
2) No you can't get iTunes to automatically add to your library new music from the network drive.
3) It's not possible to easily swtich between libraries. What you can do however is have access both to the networked songs and the songs on your external drive at the same time. The way an iTunes LIbrary works is that it indexes songs from various locations, they don't all have to be in one location. So do File->Add to Library the folder from your external drive and then you'll be able to see taht music as well as the other music at the same time. THis will not add those files to the network drive.
Lastly, have you considered using the iTunes Music Sharing feature? Enable "share my music" and "look for shared music" on the computers in the Preferences and then you'll see the other comptuers libraries as playlists in your library, It's much simpler than your setup, but it has a few disadvantages, incuding not being able to add the other computers' songs to your iPod.

  • Moving iTunes to network drive - Seagate or WD

I need to move my 800G iTunes library off my iMac (external USB drive) to a network drive. This is a migration for which I don't have a budget so I am looking for a low-cost solution.
My Gigabit network is fed by a Netgear WNDR3700 router, to which a USB drive can be attached, with ReadyShare software built in to manage it. So I have two options
attach a 2Tb drive to the router - the choices are WD MyBook or Seagate Expansion
ignore that and buy a standalone networked drive - WD MyBook Live
These particular drives are on special offer, which makes them just about affordable!
Option 1 is cheaper. BUT the drive does not support HFS+. So I will have to use it as FAT32 which limits filenames to 32 characters. Which means I will have to rename hundreds of iTunes track names. Some of these are quite complex, such as
Overture in the French Style in B minor, BWV831:10 Gigue.aiff
Option 2 appears to be plug and go - I know of two users who use WD MyBook Live in this way, but it is 30% more expensive
    So: Two questions:
Which option for hard drive is likely to be the most reliable and be fast enough to stream iTunes music to my (wired) Airport Express which feeds my hifi
If I go the router/USB route, what is the easiest way to rename the track filenames?
Complexity means they cannot simply be truncated. So I was thinking of using Better Renamer or similar on an album-by-album basis altho' this breaks the "never edit filenames in the iTunes folder" mantra .But does this matter since I am moving them to a new location which will have to be "recognized" as the new iTunes folder.
    Any and all help appreciated

If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer (and to work correctly), the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default location (usually: ‘C:\...My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music’). If this happens, you need to manually change the path back to your external location, or future CD ‘Imports’ will be deposited on your internal HD.

  • Newbie - loading music to itunes from Network drive

I just bought my first mac and I'm attempting to start using itunes with my Ipod touch and load music from a network drive that I have both of my PC's music backed up to.
In itunes, it sees some of the music from the network drive but not all of it. The folders/music are all available and I can see them in Finder but Itunes doesn't find all of the music.
Is there anyway to point itunes to the appropriate folder so I can add the music?

    Welcome to the Forums, Scott!
You can add a folder of music to iTunes by pressing Command-O or going to iTunes-> Add To Library...
    Hope this helps!

  • Itunes from networked drive?

Okay, so I have a powermac and a macbook pro and until now I've had copies of my music library on each but the MBP drive could use a little cleaning so I want to dump the itunes music from there and then connect to the powermac over the network.
    Two reasons for this:
    1. less space on my MBP hard-drive. 100GB compared to 1.3TB
    2. Adding a song or changing my library on one or the other computer reflects on both.

Yes, you can keep your music on a networked drive - my wife and I are doing this at home with our MacBooks, keeping only a small amount of our music on the MacBooks themselves. Keeping the larger library online makes syncing our pods more convenient.
But there's two caveats. First, since my wife and I have different, but overlapping musical tastes, we keep our library files on our own computers. This keeps her Rachel Wilson off my computer and my Dropkick Murphy's off hers. For this reason, we have to make sure the network drive is mounted before starting iTunes. Second, I've never attempted keeping the iTunes library file on the network drive so I don't know if that is doable or even desirable.

  • No Sync when network drive connected

    Hello,
I have an ipod nano that won't sync through itunes when network drives are mapped.
I am not trying to sync to the network drive, but just the presence of network drives stops the nano from syncing with itunes.
As soon as I disconnect the network drives the ipod syncs with itunes fine.
I have tried this on two different computers and the same thing happens.
I am using Windows XP-sp2 with the latest itunes (6.0.4) and the latest updates for the ipod.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Any workarounds?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi win,

  • Can two computers use same iTunes library on a network drive?

Can two computers use directly (rather than share) the same iTunes library on a network drive?
My media library is on a network drive attached to my Airport Extreme. Right now I share the library with my desktop Mac. I can share fine, but I would like to be able to add, delete, and make other changes in the media library from both computers. The two computers would not be accessing the library at the same time as I am the sole user of both.

I appreciate your input and I think you're right about this being impossible. But just to clarify, you say I can't "have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location." I can have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location--I just can't have them accessing the same music files simultaneously--which may have been what you meant. For my situation, I think it will be less work to just quit iTunes on my server when I want to run it on my client (using Chicken of the VNC). It's not ideal, but it's less time-consuming than periodically syncing three computers.
    Again, thanks for the input.

  • Creating/loading an iTunes library (.itl) on a network drive results in dummy error "The Disk you are attempting to use is full" [Win7]

I  have an 2TB external HDD attatched to my Asus router.  I have iTunes installed on 3 computers in the house (Bedroom, home theater, bar). Each copy of  iTunes accesses the same music folder on the external hard drive.
The problem is that iTunes creates a library file on each individual computer.  The library file gets out of sync all the time (as computer 1 doesn't know when files have been added via computer 2 and so on).
Obviously the answer is to just put the Library.itl file on the same network drive.  Hoilding shift whille double clicking the iTunes icon allows you to create or load a library from the location of your choosing.
All well and good so far.  However, when I attempt to save to my Network Attached storage Device (NAS) iTunes gives me the "The Disk you are attempting to use is full. Please delete..." error.  (There is over 1TB free on the drive.)
Creating the library file on a local HDD, moving it to the network one, and demanding iTunes access it via option start results in the SAME ERROR!!!
I'd really rather not rescan my entire library everytime I start iTunes.  Adding new purchases and songs via the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder, again, only adds the files to the database file saved on the computer where the files were dragged and dropped from.
I've used windows to "Map" the network drive, as well as typed in the \\192.168 etc address of the network drive.  Always get the same error.
Any help or thoughts would be greatly apperciated.

Also, tried this with itunes 10 (current build) iTunes 9.2.1, and itunes 8. Same issue.

  • Sharing iTunes from a network drive--what's the best way?

I want to put my iTunes library on a disk drive attached to an Airport Extreme Base Station so that any computer in the house can access it. The catch is I don't want to require any particular computer to be running for any other computer to be able to access music. I can do this by pointing each computer to the iTunes library on the network drive, but I understand that this can result in database corruption if more than one computer is accessing it at the same time. Is that correct, and is there another way to accomplish this? Thanks.

If I am correct that model can be connected to the laptop via USB. I would suggest to connect it via USB to the MacBook, create a catalog on the external drive and import the catalog from your local hard drive into the catalog on your external drive. I would also make the catalog on the external drive the master catalog, the catalog where you import all your travel catalogs. Having said this, don't forget to back the external drive up regularly. Lightroom does not like external drives connected via ethernet cables.

  • Re-establish old itunes library on network drive

After an extended period of not using itunes, I installed it today on my current desktop (Win7-64). Immediately, I had all my prior purchases available which was nice to see. My old library (about 4gb) is on a secondary drive. What's the best way to re-establish access to the old library. I also want these files moved to a network drive which is connected to a different computer and which will not have itunes on it.
I do not wish to use home sharing, and I do not want to use icloud for the old music.
    Thanks for any assistance.

You can press & hold down shift as you launch iTunes to open a library on any path, however performance may be poor with a large library that isn't located on a local drive. The library is easiest to move from one path or computer to another however if it is in a portable form, with the library folder containing the media folder. If needed once the library has been established on your chosen path the library files can be copied to a local (internal or external) drive for improved performance. They can be copied back to the network path and accessed there before moving the library again.

  • ITunes library on network drive, no longer able to download from store

I have my iTunes library stored on a WD My Cloud drive.  Suddenly today I have found that I cannot download anything from the iTunes store (movies or music).
I get an error saying "The required folder cannot be found.  Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again."
I have the WD drive mapped to Drive M and my iTunes library points to the iTunes folder on that drive.  I have confirmed the drive is up and the connection is good.
I can play music and movies in iTunes from that drive.
I have shut down iTunes and rebooted the computer multiple times.
    I'm running Windows 8.1 x64
    ITunes version 12.1.2.27
I'm looking for any help at all.  I'm getting quite frustrated.
I do have iTunes set to Keep iTunes Media folder organized and also set to Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library

I had the entire library on the network drive.  At one time I used it with just the movies on a drive that was plugged into my router but that was a hassle.  So I bought the 4TB network drive hoping this would be an easier solution and I could store everything on it.
It had work fine for a while but I do not know what happened.  Nothing I tried worked.  I successfully moved my library to my USB 3.0 drive and it is working just fine.  I am able to download from the iTunes store now.
Now, I did discover that some movies were missing but I can re-download them easily.
What I don't understand is that if I view my purchases in the iTunes store and tell it to show only movies that are not in my library it shows a whole lot of things that ARE in my library.

  • Iomega network drive no longer connects under iTunes 10.5 - lost access to all my songs. Anyone else having problems with iTunes 10.5 / IOS 5?

I have an Iomega 500Gb network drive (Connects via CAT5 cable to hub) It contains all of the music in my iTunes. It worked fine until I upgraded iTunes to 10.5 (and installed IOS5 / iCloud). Now, I can no longer access ANY of the music. The drive shows as a device in iTunes, but when I click it, it displays the songs for a split second, but they then disappear and I connot access them. The Iomega drive functions normally when accessed via a Windows browser.
    Anyone else with this problem?
    regards Steve

FYI: It seems it was a network problem with my WinXP PC. After complete deletion and new installation of XP and iTunes my iPhone will be recognized correctly, Wifi synchronization works (mostly) fine.

  • Itunes can't find network drive on boot, but fine after

I have a MacMini server for my house providing light control, emal, websites and other fun stuff.   As it is on 24x7 it made sense to put the iTunes library here as well and have my primary workstation simply connect to it.  As the MacMini is in a closet I really need the primary workstation as the point of connection for all iPads and iPhones.
This seemed simple enough in theory but it's got a quirk in it somewhere.
On startup, the primary workstation always comes up with an error that it can't find the iTunes library.   But when I click the option button to choose the library, it opens to the proper place - the directory locatino on the MacMini.
After I have done this, iTunes works just as expected.   I can even close iTunes on the workstation and open it again - poof, there it is as expected and no problem.   If I shut down the workstation and start it up again then once again I get this same error from iTunes regarding it being unable to find the library.
I wrote an apple script in an effort to establish connection to the network drive (i.e., the MacMini) and it works just fine - it even has a delay to make sure the connection is established (I can disable this but it makes no difference).  The problem is that it seems to run AFTER the iTunes Helper has tried and fialed.
Under my Login Items, the iTuens Helper is always the First application listed.  I can't seem to reorder them at all.  I can delete the iTunes Helper, but then of coruse iTunes doesn't launch.   Once I set the preferences again to start iTunes at Startup, it reasserts itself to be first in line.
I am using a Mac Airport Extreme (had the original and now have the 802.11ac) as the central network controller - but this issue was there before.  Although there is a Netgear Gigbabit router in the house too, the workstation and the MacMini are both on diret lines to the Airport Extreme and are not using wireless.
The sharing of the media files works just fine, and from the Apple TVs in the house I can select and play either from the MacMini or the workstation as long as the workstation is on.   Of course the media is all coming from the MacMini drive as the original source, but there are no latency issues perceptable.
It's only the initial startup boot of the workstation that seems to trigger this error.
I have tried removing the network connection script, and simply reidetifying the library location using the option key when starting iTunes - but the behavior remains.
Searching for how others have recommended doing this, most articles don't have the login script but others do - but none of them have any sort of a bi-line warning that for the initial startup there may be this lost library error.
The MacMini is new as of February and the workstation is an older Mac Pro - both are running the latest versions of OS X 10.8.4 with all updates in place.
I don't have any other startup applications that require info from the MacMini.  However, since I adminster it via screen share, and usually have no exited that - screen share is happily there and fully connected after startup.   Leaving this open or shutting it down doesn't have any affect on the iTunes issue.
This seems to simple an issue for it to have a complex cause - but I am clearly missing something.
Hoping someone here has some fresh thoughts and ideas.
    Cheers -
    Dan

On a whim, I tested the remote library with my MacBook Pro.
I shut down iTunes on the MacPro Workstation and then used the Option key to startup iTunes on the MacBook Pro - and selected the remote library on the MacMini.   Worked jsut fine (of coure the size of the open window was too big) but no issues at all.
And once selected, I can close and start iTunes repeatedly with no issues on the MacBook Pro.
Then I did a Shutdown and Restart.   Following the login I get the very same popup window telling me that the iTunes library can not be found.  AND just like on the Workstation, I hit the option for Choose and it takes me right to the correct location on the MacMini - all I need to do is accept and poof it launches just as it should.
    The MacBook is on wireless.
Indications here are that this is an issue with iTunes starting up before the netowrk handshakes have completed.
    Anyone have any thoughts??

  • Can an iTunes Media folder be on a LAN network drive?

That is, remote from the Mac on which the library is managed, but (obviously) on the same LAN.
When "Copy files to iTunes Media folder" is set, and I import a CD via the managing mac, will the files land up on the network drive or into the iTunes folder on the managing Mac?

By organizing it should both relocate all current media as well as start using the new location from that point on.  You're mostly okay there.  Where you are not okay is iTunes doesn't look at your files directly.  It only really looks at one single file, the iTunes Library.itl file which tells it where everything is located.  You need to get both copies of iTunes using the same complete library (media + library file).  The way you do that is using the option start method.  You should only need to do that once unless for some reason the library storage drive is disconnected when starting iTunes, in which case iTunes will use the default location and you will need to option start again.

  • ITunes Media folder organization on a network drive

I have a problem with a strange behaviour of iTunes media folder organization on my network drive.
Option "keep iTunes Media folder organized" is enabled.
If the Media folder is on a local drive or the Media folder is replaced by an alias pointing to a folder on an external drive it works correctly.
(Correctly means subfolders like "music" are generated by iTunes.)
But if the Media folder is an alias that points to a networkdrive directly (instead of pointing to a folder in that drive) iTunes does not create the subfolders anymore.
What is the reason for that behaviour, how can it be fixed?

Thanks for the feedback, but with the iPhone (I use the calendar feature a lot), synchronising just became a very common event, and perpetual re-connecting will drive me insane.
    I guess I will just live with what we have until the folks at Apple figure it out;

  • ITunes media folder on network drive

    Hi Everyone,
My plan is to store my media files in a folder on a network drive, and then have itunes pull from that network directory to located media.  On two of my machines, I changed the media folder to the directory on the network drive.  I had itunes consolodate the files, and copy all the files from each machine onto the network directy.  At this point, I was expecting to see all media files from both computers in each itunes library, however, this is not the case.  Instead, only the files that were originally stored on their respective machines are displayed in each library, as opposed to one library showing all files now on the one network directory.  Is there a way to have itunes refresh itself so that it can see the files in the network directory that I have designated as the media folder?  Thanks in advance.

Was the library database stored or backed up to the networked drive? If so you can hold down shift as you start iTunes to reconnect to the database, otherwise you'll have to rebuild the library with the content.
