  • ITunes 7.0 Update - now music does not play

After updating to the latest iTunes, music does not play. I see old posts about this with versions 5 and 6, but now I have it with 7. I've tried uninstalling both QT and iTunes and reinstalling - same problem exists. When a music file is selected for play, the scrolling diamond never advances. I've dragged the diamond to the middle of the file; it still just stays stuck. I've tried deauthorizing and reauthorizing: same problem remains. I;ve checked that the exe is not set for "mixed-mode" (an Apple article), but it isn't in that mode. All files are findable through iTunes and they will download to the iPod through iTunes. Windows XP Pro is completely up-to-date through Microsoft Update (it already was before the upgrade - on auto-update - but I double checked to be sure). An audio CD has the same behavior: the tracks are read and displayed, but they will not play. The CD spins up for about a minute and then stops. The same CD plays fine in Windows Media Player.
Does anyone have a clue on this one? I see these old articles about the same problem in previous versions, but there are no fixes or suggestions, other than what I've already tried above.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I decided to revert to iTunes 6.0.5, which I found on the Apple site. Uninstalled 7.0.0 and installed 6.0.5. It wouldn't start, complaining that itunes library.itl was created by a newer version of iTunes - great! Well, it turns out there is a backup of the old library file in the iTunes directory. I replaced the one created by 7.0.0 with that older file. The music is again playing!!! We're back to where we were before the 7.0.0 update, so that's some relief, but we're currently at a deadend on the update cycle. Not sure where to go from here, except nowhere.

  • ITunes 7 upgrade - loss of music, or not?

I would like to upgrade my iTunes to the latest 7.0.2 version, but am worried I'll lose all my songs currently on the previous version of iTunes. These number almost 1500, so could someone kindly tell me what will happen to my songs after upgrading to 7.0.2? Will I lose everything, or will all remain intact? Thanks, much appreciated!

    Hi, AndrewKG.
Default settings place your song files in the iTunes Music folder which, along with the Album Artwork and Previous iTunes Libraries folders and the iTunes Library files , is found at C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \My Documents\My Music\iTunes - far away from the iTunes program itself which is located at C:\Program Files\iTunes .
Although iTunes certainly makes use of the contents of the iTunes folder - among other things the library files tell iTunes exactly where to find the song files which is, of course, necessary if iTunes is going to play any music or transfer it to your iPod - the folder is not actually a part of the program so uninstalling or upgrading iTunes should have no effect at all on the contents of the iTunes folder ...
    ... but ...
... one of the funny things about computers is that sometime, somehow, somewhere when you least expect it , they can do some not so funny things, like losing data that they're not supposed to. Which is why it's a good idea to have a back up copy of any data (such as your music) that you value in reserve ... just in case.
There are a variety of ways of doing so but for most people it probably comes down to one of two options.
The one this article in the Apple Knowledge Base describes in detail uses iTunes 7 to burn a back-up copy of the contents of your iTunes Library and the Library files - but not the Album Artwork or Previous iTunes Libraries folders - to CD's/DVD's.
The other main method for creating your back-up is to save a copy of the iTunes folder on a separate hard drive. Some of our Discussions regulars are quite fond of that approach .
If, when and how you choose to back-up your music is your decision to make - just bear in mind that as far as I know we've never had anyone post in these discussions who's regretted creating a back-up copy of their iTunes Library.
But we often hear from people who regret not having done so.

  • Uploaded new itunes upgrade and now some music can not be located. a screen appears and says you need to locate the songs in other folders. Any ideas? New upgrade sinks

    Hello
just did the the new upgrade and now half of my songs are not playing. A screen appears and says you need to search for your music in folders. What the heck happen with this ? Anybody have any issues too?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • New itunes is telling me my music can not be located when i try to play

I have upgraded to the new itunes. now when i try to play any of ny music it just tells me the file can not be located and would i like to locate it. this is really annoying.

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • Why does iTunes shut down when playing music but not using computer, why does iTunes shut down when playing music but not using computer

    Hi Everybody
When I use my macbook pro running lion 10.7.2 to play music through itunes it shuts down after about 2 minutes, is there anything I can set to keep the itunes open and playing when  not in use, this problem only started when I updated from snow loepard to lion.
    Thanks

    Hi Limnos
I have tried that but it makes no difference at all, the only way I have found to get continues sound is to open and set a keynote presentation onto play and dimmed the screen using the function key and adjusting it manually so as not to kicker my screen, there must be an easier way than this.
    Thanks for trying

  • ITunes on Win 7 64 bit will not sync Google Contacts to iPad

This was particularly infuriating for a few solid hours one evening. I had originally synced my iPad to a Macbook Pro. I sold the MacBook, and had to do a warranty swap @ the Apple store with the iPad. This meant I needed to sync my new iPad with iTunes on my desktop, a computer running Windows 7 64 bit. Everything synced up just fine, except iTunes refused to sync my Google Contacts with the iPad. I went through the process again and again, ensuring I was choosing Google Contacts on the Info screen, correctly entering my account info, etc. I would sync, then check the Contacts on the iPad, and nothing.
I was going to call Apple support from work the next day, but just for the heck of it before I did I connected the iPad to my work computer, a Win XP Pro box, and tried to sync the Google Contacts from that copy of iTunes. It worked just fine, and loaded all my Google Contacts on to the iPad. Both my home Win 7 64 box and my work XP box had the most up-to-date version of iTunes at the time (9.1.1 I believe).
Any clue as to why iTunes refuses to sync Google Contacts on Win 7 64? I have to sync through iTunes, since Apple sees fit to only allow one Exchange account in iPhone OS 3.x.x and I have my work email setup as the Exchange account, and thusly cannot setup Gmail as the Exchange account.

Just for the heck of it, I did a factory reset on the iPad again, and gave it another shot on the Win 7 64 machine at home. I uninstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, installed iTunes 9.1.1 64 bit for Windows, and achieved the exact same results: impossible to get iTunes to sync Google Contacts to the iPad. It goes through the motions, but never delivers any contacts to the iPad.

  • Itunes library still in my music but not in itunes

I opened itunes today to find all of my music was gone. Thankfully, the library is still in the "My Music" folder. How in the world do I get it back on itunes and why in the world did this happen?

Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Go to where you found the library file and open it: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • How can I take music from an USB and transfer it to the iPod? It tells me use use itunes to sync but the music is on an USB drive. It had worked in the past. Tks

How can I transfer music from an USB drive to the iPod. I can see the music and play it on the computer, but the iPod tells me to use iTunes to sync. The music is not on iTunes. It has worked in the past.....tks

These are just playlists. The songs there are really not duplicates of the songs. They are just a different location for accessing them. Some playlists can be deleted, some cannot. Ones that are created by iTunes cannot be deleted. Ones that you create can be. The Recently Added and the 90's cannot.

  • I have my personal music (not purchased from Itunes) stored in two locations, on my PC and on an external HD. How can I find out which directory itunes uses to access this music? I am using Itunes version 11.4.0.18. Thanks

I have my personal music (not purchased from Itunes) stored in two locations, on my PC and on an external HD. How can I find out which directory itunes uses to access this music? I am using Itunes version 11.4.0.18. Thanks

Many thanks JEM24 for your help.  Ive just spent the best part of six hundred pounds on a new Sony Rx100m2 compact camera, so I have no interest in the Ipods camera at all really. I doubt Ill be watching many videos on it as Im very lucky in that I have a good Android tablet. Its more as a stock music player that Ill be buying the Ipod for, if indeed I do end up buying one. I dont like the idea of paying the exorbitant amount added for more memory space that Apple along with most other companies charge. In fact I read an article on this very subject just yesterday in the tech section of Flipboard. It stated in the article that in the case of the Iphone  the actual cost of each additional  gigabyte of storage  to Apple et al is something in the order of 60p.. This is certainly not reflected in the price us the customer has to pay at the till.. Its for this reason primarily that Apple in particular, because their products do not allow adding expandable memory of your own in the form of cheap to buy cards, that nobody in their right mind buys the 64gig etc Iphones..I am aware that we are discussing my potential purchase of an Ipod Touch here but you see my point. Many thanks again though for helping me.

  • Why doesn't itunes 11 (Win) show us the length of podcasts?  Only new ones d/l thru it show, and even then not - when I can use an old version (10) and it shows me much more info.  Am I missing a setting?  Thanks!!!

Cannot see or sort podcasts via itunes 11 (Win) like I could in iTunes 10 .. am I missing something?  Same goes for playlists.  I often take old-time-radio music and/or shows and need them in date-order to make them work (say, ep 1 is one date, ep 2, etc - among dozens of titles).  IS there is a setting or did Apple just get rid of it?  I have a laptop with iTunes 10 but have tried to get used to the newer versions on my Mom's PC. I don't want to update until I can use it the same way.
Serial radio must be in order.  And I have to at least see that in the display to put it in a playlist.  Podcasts that show dates from several years ago in ver. 10 no long show anything like it now.  Nor, btw, does length of file play.  I use it as an over night "podcast radio" and need it to make sense.  aIf I need extra steps outside of iTunes okay.  Just wish Apple had made it clear and it hasn't.
    Thanks!

Once you do get things working... Hardware crashes or virus infections happen, so you should buy software to make a full backup of your hard drive to an external USB hard drive... plus, making step-by-step backups during a new install or major program addition makes it easy to go back a step if something doesn't work
This backup and then restore is, of course, only to the same computer with a new drive (or the same drive as long as you don't mind writing over everything) since doing a restore to a new computer won't work due to Windows and many programs having activation information that is keyed to your hardware (which is why Windows will force you to RE-Activate if you change very much hardware)
The product I use is at http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm
Image runs off of a bootable CD via Linux (the Zip you download includes a program to make the bootable CD) and it reads EVERYTHING on the drive, even the hidden registration information, so everything is restored when needed... and you may restore the image to a brand new drive in case of a crash, and not have to re-install anything
Please note that I own no part of Image, and I don't get a referral fee (that is just a plain web link) but I use the program and it has saved me a LOT of trouble when I had a hard drive die... and I was able to restore everything and not have to re-install or re-activate a single program, from Windows on up

  • ITunes Store music tab not showing up

iTunes Store music tab not showing up

    FollowUp - Problem Solved.
Just in case anyone else was experiencing the same issues, I pinpointed it down to a corrupted iTunes preference file - com.apple.iTunes.plist.
I created a new user account, lauched iTunes and it worked fine, no black drop down window appearing, so I went back into my account and deleted this and relaunched iTunes and the drop down window showed all the search results again, not the black window as seen in my example image.
    Hope this helps others!

  • 11.0.5.5 64-bit on Win 8:  music does not play after update

Recently prompted to update itunes software to 11.0.5.5 64-bit (Win 8).  Did so and now music does not play.  Music library is correct but when I select a song and then push the "play" triangle itunes says it is playing but tracker does not move off of "0:00".  Any ideas?

The issue is probably not the machine you purchased the music on.  The issue is very likely the Apple ID you used to purchase the music.
It sounds like the music being skipped on your iPhone 5 was purchased with some Apple ID that is not currently authorized in the iTunes (on your computer) that you sync to.  So you should go to that computer, open iTunes, do Store > Authorize This Computer from iTunes' menu, enter that Apple ID and password, then sync your iPhone 5 to that iTunes.

  • ITunes moving files outside of the "music" directory.

I can't understand why, but whenever I open up iTunes it moves files outside of the "music" directory and into the "iTunes Media" directory.
The files it decides to move are random and it does not matter if I try to play or edit any of them, it happens as soon as iTunes is opened.
Any idea why this occurs and how I can prevent it?

I don't think you guys are understanding what I am asking.
Since iTunes 9 was released I have had my media "reorganized" and consolidated according to the "organize library" option in iTunes. My music library looked like this:
    ../iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/<artist name>/<album name>/<track>
What has been happening recently when I launch iTunes is that it starts moving my music to this structure:
    ../iTunes/iTunes Media/<artist name>/<album name>/<track>
iTunes is moving files automatically outside of my "music" folder into the root "iTunes Media" folder even though I have asked it to keep my folder organized / consolidated and have run "organize library" several times.

  • How do i prevent itunes to change the music directory to D:\Music

I have all my music on a server drive. Sometimes the network has connectionproblems, that makes my drive unavailable.
If I start up itunes, it can not find the server drive.
The problem is that iTunes changes the standard music directory to D or C, but never changes back to de erver drive whenever it becomes available again.
If I change it back to the server-drive and sart up itunes, itunes starts reading and updating the files in the directory, which takes up to 15 minutes, in which time I can not play any music. Eventhough all other (library)settings are within reach on that drive. No actions are possible until the library is restored.
If my bloodpressure is still up the scale, I do not enjoy the music anymore.. it is very annoying.
Why not display an error (drive unavailable), but keep the setting (or in a memorylist of frequently used directories) or pose question (what do you want ituens to do?)
Same thing happens with an external drive... if the drive is not connected, and itunes is started up (to search in the store)... it changes the directory back to D or C. No actions are possible until the library is restored.

See this migrate iTunes library post or Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
