ITunes PDF info lost in iBooks

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. I had been using iTunes extensively for PDFs. I had given all the about 450 PDFs infos like name (title), artist (author), genre, comments and so on and had arranged them into playlists. After installing Mavericks all those PDFs were moved from iTunes to iBooks. All the info I tagged all those PDFs with now seems to be lost. Is there a way to recover that info?
I was thinking that all that information was stored in either «iTunes Library.xml» or in «iTunes Library.itl» but as it turns out «iTunes Library.xml» was excluded from all my backups for some reason (including the backup I made before installing Mavericks specifically for that case).

When you connect your iPad to your computer, open iTunes, and with the iPad selected, select File >  Devices > Transfer Purchases. This should transfer the pdf to your computer. It should now be accessible in iBooks on your Mac, and you can sync it with other devices.

  • ITunes trying to sync deleted iBooks?

Forgive me if this post seems in the wrong place because I can't find the right place to ask about syncing iBooks from Mavericks to IOS.
This is hard to explain, ... I had some PDF's and one iBook I deleted from my iPhone and iPad and on my Mac most deleted, but some deleted ones still show up in the Books section of iTunes as books including a purchased book as supposedly available books that can still be sync despite that they shouldn't be there. All the other books and PDF's deleted perfectly fine except the few in the picture.
I've gone over this several times qirh myself making I didn't miss a step. ... I totally emptied the iBooks folder~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books. and I've totally deleted all iBooks and PDF's in iBooks on my Mac, iPad and iPhone. I had no bookshelves to deal with using "Edit" and "Delete" per each device I have.
I even TOTALLY wiped out and reinstalled iTunes using CleanApp and selected nearly as many files and folders in the process including those not advised to.
Again, I've enclosed a picture of what's showing as still there, but if anyone is interested, should I try to resync any of those books seen in this picture back into my iPhone or iPad I do get an error they can't be found as expected because they SHOULD be deleted - they just remain showing as available to sync regardless. I've tried all sorts of ways of unchecking and rechecking, booting rebooting all devices, etc. I just want them totally deleted so this page can look totally clean.
    Thanks!

    WITH PERSISTANCE I GOT IT!!!
From my experiment above being partially successful, I learned that somehow the book "information" is somehow stored in Library.itl What I DIDN'T do before I returned to the latest and greatest iTunes Library.itl file from the old was to SAVE my deletions and totally closeout the old one before going forward in time to today and that did it!
No lost music, ringtones, etc. Just the deleted books got deleted!
In summary for those who run into the same problem I have ...
    1) Let Time Machine make a new backup to insure you have the latest files in place to date.
    2) Using Time Machine, go back in time to sometime before Mavericks first came out and restore iTunes to the Desktop. (It won't overwrite the current version because you're not allowed.)
    3) Using Time Machine, go back in time to the same date you pulled your old iTunes from and restore the Library.itl file into it's current location. It will overwrite the newest one, but don't worry.
    4) Open up iTunes and you'll see the books folder is back in the sidebar. Delete the errant books and PDF's close out iTunes completely to keep the changes.
    5) Delete the old iTunes you used and open the current iTunes for Mavericks. It will notice the Library.itl file needs updating and the books folder will still be visible in the sidebar. Click on the books folder for the message saying the books have moved and then click the "OK" button.
    6) Close iTunes.
    7) Using Time Machine, go back to the LATEST and NEWEST Library.itl file you made with your backup I suggested to be made in step one and restore it.
    8) Open up iTunes and all your current music, etc. is back. Verify with iPhone or iPad that there are no books "deleted books" to sync.
    9) DONE!!!
Whew! Tolerating it since January. Been working on this all night.

  • HT204365 Why did all my PDF files disappear from ibooks on my iPad

All of my PDF files disappeared from iBooks on my iPad. Where and why did they suddenly disappear? How can I retrieve them?

As far as I can work out, from incomplete downloads, ticks denote all downloaded ok.
The manually manage option is for those who want to tailor their library collections in Music and Video to specific items.  If you have this ticked, then it will sync with the sync selections in your devices pages (eg, Music, videos).
If you want to sync all of your collection 'all' the time, leave manually manage off and put the a tick in the devices' page to sync all items  Dependent on iCloud use, and or automatic download options in iTunes, new purchased items are added and synced automatically as they are added - this only applies to Store purchased items.
If you are going to added content outside of the Store, then Manually Manage is the option to take for Music and Videos - it does not affect anything else. IE Apps or podcasts, etc.
If you have manually manage off, and 'selected playlist' option ticked, then it will sync existing ticked items, but new items downloaded will require you tick them (a) after the next iTunes automatic download when it connects to the store and  downloads any items, or (b) you download to a device and then sync the device, in which case it transfers the new download to your library - but, as happened to you, deletes it from your idevice.
Retcicking and resyncing will add the item back on next sync.
Don't forget that whenever making any kind of manual change to hit Apply and resync, to stop changes being lost.
However, and i cannot stress this enough, iTunes is very problematic, especially when handling large collections.  Its sync operations can be erratic or non-functional at times (even buggy perhaps)
If all options fail, then go to your program installation control folder (Control panel\Programs etc on windows) and select to repair iTunes.
And if you have not already got it
http://help.apple.com/ipad/5/interface/  the ipad manual (not the used guide - this is more about how it operates)
    may prove usefiul to you.
    Best wishes, Ct

  • Itunes not in sync with Ibooks

    Hi All,
Since Mavericks, the books synchronization system has changed.
As far as I understood, Ibooks is supposed to take care of all the collection and synchronize purchased books to all devices (iPad, iPhone, etc.).
Note that iBooks does not contain only Apple-purchased books, but imported items (free, purchased from a 3rd party, private PDF, etc.).
Concerning these other books , iTunes is supposed to take care of the synchronisation through the same old iTunes tab.
Here is my issue: I would expect that iTunes lists all my books, iBooks-purchased AS WELL AS imported items, allowing to sync them all or only selected ones.
But it seems that iTunes totally lost synchronization with my library. It does not show newly imported files. It still show old deleted imported files, but without cover.
Is it only me or is it a total mess ?
Maybe my iTunes library or cache is totally broken. Any suggestion on how I could restore it ?
    Thank you for your help.
    Best regards.

You should be able to just place them in your Books library in iTunes and check to ensure that your Book library is configured to sync to your iPod when you sync your iPod to iTunes.

  • Is there a way to overwrite the ORIGINAL songs with my iTunes library info?

    Hi there,
I would like to know if there is a way to overwrite the original songs with my iTunes library info? What I mean is, I have MANY songs that I have transferred to iTunes (and were obviously not purchased from iTunes) and I always put the info (such as the album name, the album art, artist, composer, etc.) and it leaves the original song (like the songs that are in "My music" section that is in "My Documents") with the same info. For example : The song that I put into the library will be "chamiionaire feastureing flip"... and in the iTunes, I put it as "Chamillionaire ft. Lil Flip". How do I make it so that it replaces the "original" info (located in my documents) with the info I put in?

Same question. Used to have an iPod. Lost it (best digital player ever), now I use other portable device. The mp3 files have their id3tag edited in the original file, but the .m4a don't!.
Want to know someway to write the info from the library to the original .m4a files.

    Hi jybravo70,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you may be experiencing issues on your non iOS 8 devices because iOS 8 is required to set up or join a Family Sharing group.
The following information is located in the print at the bottom of the article.
Apple - iCloud - Family Sharing
Family Sharing requires a personal Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes. Music, movies, TV shows, and books can be downloaded on up to 10 devices per account, five of which can be computers. iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are required to set up or join a Family Sharing group and are recommended for full functionality. Not all content is eligible for Family Sharing.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • How can I use the Adobe reader if the PDF documents are in iBooks?

The Adobe reader asks me to look for an "Open in" button but iBooks does not appear to have one. I like IBooks because it synchronises nicely with the computer, and I can read the PDFs but I cannot highlight, add comments or add bookmarks unless I use the Adobe reader.

Use iTunes to save the PDF FROM iBooks, and to add them to Adobe Reader.
Connect your iPad to your computer. Bring up iTunes on your computer.
To save a PDF FROM iBooks, click on "Books" in the Library section on the left. Select the PDF you want to save and right-click and choose Show in Finder (Show in Explorer in Windows). Go up one level in your computer hierarchy and you'll see all the "Books" (PDFs and eBooks) in iBooks.  You can leave them here if you want to view the PDFs in iBooks in the future, or drag them to the Desktop.
To move the PDF TO Adobe Reader:
Return to iTunes. Click on the iPad on the left in Devices. Click on the Apps tab. Scroll down the the File Sharing section as shown below. Click on Adobe Reader. Click the Add button and select the PDFs you identified in the previous step. They'll be added to Adobe Reader

  • PDF from Mac to iBooks on iPad - how?

PDF from Mac to iBooks on iPad - how?
Before iBooks for Mac came along I simply dragged my PDF to iTunes and synced my iPad. I foolishly installed Mavericks and iBooks on my Mac.
Now I have no idea how to drop PDF's to my iPad.
There is a support article but no helpful at
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4227?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
What must I do? I simply want Apple drag 'n drop functionality back please.

You should be able to add the PDF to the iBooks app on your Mac via File > Add To Library, and if you then connect your iPad to your Mac and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your Mac's iTunes then it should show on the iPad's Books tab for syncing to your iPad's iBooks app.
Or you can email the PDF to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app on your iPad to copy it into the iBooks app.

  • Enviar un PDF por correo desde iBooks

Como puedo enviar un PDF por Mail desde iBooks ........??????

If the PDF isn't protected then open the PDF and at the top left tap the 'share' icon :
If the PDF is protected then you will only get the 'Print' option.
If it's protected then even though they aren't ibooks, as they are in the iBooks app you should be able to copy them over to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases, so you could email it from your computer.

  • PDFs Not Synching in iBooks? Urgent?

Hello! I've recently downloaded a third-party PDF and dragged it in my iTunes (10.1) and it worked with no problems in the "books" section. However, when I wanted it to sync in iBooks, it just wouldn't show up. I'm using an iPhone 4, recently updated to iOS 4.2. I have already tried restarting, both iTunes and the iPhone; checking the PDF section of iBooks and labeling the PDF as a "book" on iTunes. What can I do?

    Hello Christine96,
this is sometimes because of the PDF reader.
Here is a link to the iBooks forum in iTunes.

If you post a question here:

  • How do I transfer larger PDF files stored in iBooks to replacement iPad?

How do I transfer larger PDF files stored in iBooks to replacement iPad?

Do you sync with iTunes and are the PDF files in your iTunes library? If they are, sync the iPad with iTunes.

  • Can I sync pdf books not to iBooks?

When I sync my pdf library to iPad they go to iBooks. I do not like it because every new pdf page size I should adjust. Is it possible to sync my pdf library to another reader? Thanks.

You can download another reader such as Adobe Reader and use file sharing to transfer the books into that app, but if you place the pdf files into your books library in iTunes, they will sync to iBooks.
Adobe Reader is free (there are other free pdf apps as well) and it is a very good reader, you can orgainize into folders, rename, annotate .... this will explain how to use file sharing.
