ITunes window disappears but iTunes is still running
When I open iTunes for the first time after starting up the computer, it works fine. But if my computer goes to sleep, when it wakes up, I can't get the main iTunes window to appear. All of the menus still work. Quitting iTunes and re-opening it does not fix the problem.
Please help!

Downloaded 4.0, Windows Vista, but 3.6 still running. How do I get 4.0 to run?
Just downloaded 4.0, on desktop, Windows Vista. Saved file, restarted computer, then reopened Firefox browser, only to discover I'm still in 3.6.16 (I did the same when 3.6.4 came up, but was unable to upgrade that one, either.)
This has happened before -- I must be missing a step for getting .exe files to run.found a fix... had this today.
I deleted FirefoxExtensionsSetup within this folder:
HD/Applications/Adobe Contribute CS5.1/SupportFiles/FireFoxExtension
Then Firefox worked.

I have also had problems starting Firefox. I click the icon and nothing happens. That problem is intermittent. The Windows message that Firefox is still running after I have closed the Firefox browser keeps occurring and I do not know how to remedy this.
The one thing that is locking up fire fox is the plug ins. You have to check to see if a plug in is locking up firefox first of all.
To see the processes press : CTRL+ALT+DEL. then click the tab marked "Processes" Then look for Fire Fox and click on it. Click the Yes button when the warning box show up.
Then do the say for "Plug-in Container" I believe that is called.
this is because all ads are now flash ads or video ads. They lock my computer up all the time.
When the CTRL+ALT+DEL are pressed. Keep this minimized and you can see if your computer is running at 100% memory near the clock. If the box is totally green, you are running a lot of programs on your system. Check the processes and find out what is not needed. Also watch your virtual memory. Rule of thumb is 1.5x total memory.
Then now it would be able to shut down the computer the right way.

Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute

Firefox disappears but its process keeps running
For the past few weeks, Firefox's window has been often disappearing out of the blue as if the browser crashed, but the browser's process keeps running in the task manager and I have to kill it to restart it. No crash report is ever generated. This happens often on websites that use Flash such as Youtube, Grooveshark and Imgur. I've disabled hardware acceleration but the crashes still occur. Please help.
You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:

RMI Experts - I cannot connect to server, but connected clients STILL RUN
I am pulling my hair out, I have 4 identical RMI servers running on RH linux 7.0, JDK1.3. The client is a signed java applet that runs with the JRE1.3 under windows. It binds to each of the 4 servers, and unbinds from the 3 with the most clients connected for load balancing and failover.. The servers are set up as:

rmi://12.34.56.78:1097/server3
rmi://12.34.56.78:1096/server4
I am using different ports AND server names, I find that the client confuses things if you don't..
The problem started when I re-deployed the applet, but it didn't work, so I put the OLD version back out there. NO SERVER SIDE changes at all, and the applet that has been working for months is now the same exact jar file.
Here's what's happenning: When I look up all 4 servers, 3 are giving me 'No Name Space', even though I'm positive the code is correct. NEW connections are not being allowed, but clients that are ALREADY connected still run perfectly. It's ALWAYS 3 out of 4 servers down, the 4th one NEVER crashes.. When I re-start the server app, it runs for about 3 minutes and crashes again.
The result is the client only sees one server up and EVERYONE connects to it.. There are about 250 simultaneous connections, and one server cannot handle all this computation..

you have chosen the one you want to keep. You didn't
say how your servers really know about the number of
active connections, but if you implement your own
connect/disconnect on top of RMI, then you should be
able to keep your connection counts straight.Well, I just assumed that the connections would stay there, but after some testing, it doesn't look like that's the case at all.. In fact, unless you are calling methods, there are NO TCP connections being maintained to the server at all.. 'netstat -a' on the linux server says there is nothing at all when the client app is idle..
I have a method on the server that gets called by the clients once every couple min's with the user's IP, login, and which app the are using.. The server keep a table of who's logged in (ie, who it's receiving these method calls from), so it konws who's logged in at any given time.. When a user closes the app, this method gets called with some different arguements, then the server removes that entry from the table..
The server checks it's table every so often and flags a field as 'false' every so often.. The client is responsible for calling this method which changes it back to 'true'. The server checks less frequently than the clients call this method, so if the server checks, and the flag is already false, that means the client app closed and didn't notify the server (ie, power failure, process killed, etc..), so the server has a means of timing out users however frequently you set it up for..
I have it set up so the client calls the server method every 5 minutes, and the server checks every 10. It works perfectly and there's hardly any overhead at all.. Even with 400 people (which is the highest peak) on the system (across 4 servers), you can't notice a performance decrease at all.. The load is being balanced something like 98 / 102 / 105 / 96, and before this setup it was more like 40 / 153 / 143 / 70.. So it's well worth it.. -
FLVplayback window disappears but sound remains
I'm using Flash CS5 and Actionscript 2. I'm created a multi page training document with some pages containing videos.
I have a set of XML program generated videos that work great until I use removeMovieClip(); when exiting the page. I use this to kill the video before I get the the next page.
When I come back to the page the code I have regenerates the list. But when I play the videos I only get sound and no video.
Sometimes the video black window appears and then immediately disappears or nothing appears but the sound starts playing.
I can't figure out what is worng - any help is appreciated!

I am having a hard time with my fcp x running so slow. i can't even move my mouse without the time wheel coming on and staying up for at least 20 some seconds. I have upgraded my ram to 12 and changed all my files to proxy files; also i cleaned the crap out of my computer removing all other media files I didn't need and it is still running the same. Please help! I have a deadline on my short film to be submitted and I can't finish it like this. Oh also it ran fine in the beginning but and one day it just started doing this out of no where. In addition have you got FileVault switched on as that will kill performance.

Hp envy m6 screen goes black but computer is still running
My grandson has a HP Envy M6 laptop, every so often the screen on his laptop goes black but the computer is still running. If he is watching a DVD on the TV via hdmi cable the movie still plays on the tv but the screen on the laptop is still black. Sometimes it will come back up, other times he has to turn it off and restart. Please, somebody give me an answer because my grandson is in college and if I can't get this fixed, he is expecting Grandma to buy him a new laptop.
Well, I went back and reread your links and realized that the second one was to update the bios. Since I know that my grandson might not even know what the bios is much less how to update it or know that it needs to be updated. So I updated the bios and although I hesitate to say that fixed the problem since it has only been a couple of house, I haven't had the screen cut out on me since I did the update.

Display and USB dead, but Mac Pro still running?
Hi,
Two days ago, my 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008) became unusable. It displays the Apple logo on grey background during startup then after a while, the rolling "circle" freezes, yet the Mac keeps booting as we can still hear the hard drive running. Sometimes, the screen blinks once or twice just before freezing, but nothing more.
After a while, the Mac finishes booting up: its name appears in the "Shared" section of a Finder window seen from another Mac. However, I can't connect to it via "Share Screen": error message saying the Mac is unreachable. The keyboard doesn't work either cause I can't blindly use it --not even to try to restart the Mac (CTRL-EJECT + R).
If I plug my iPhone, the battery starts charging but no synchro --I don't hear the faintest noise from the hard drive, meaning iTunes doesn't launch.
However, I can connect to the Mac thru file sharing; once identified, all volumes appear and can be mounted and browsed normally. I also can connect thru a SSH session and pilot the Mac via the Terminal. Note: the "shutdown -r now" command seems to work as the shutting down message appears with three beeps and the Mac disappears from the Shared list mentioned above, but it doesn't turns off "physically"; fans and hard drives keep running and the front LED remains on... forever.
All this makes me think there's something really wrong with the I/O management (except network but is it really I/O?): no display, no mouse, no keyboard (no USB).
Of course, I zapped the PRAM, removed the extra RAM I bought two months ago, I also removed one by one the two internal hard drives and checked all possible connections. The same problem keeps happening during startup, even with only the system DVD in the superdrive --without any hard drive connected, just to be sure.
For information, the very first problem happened while playing a game on Windows via Boot Camp: the screen froze but music and sound kept running. After three restarts --still under Boot Camp-- and a freeze a few minutes after I was back in the game, I gave up and restarted under Mac OS X. The Mac worked normally for about an hour, then crashed while I was browsing my music in iTunes. The next crashes were happening faster after each restart. And now, the Mac won't even boot normally.
Here's my story. If one of you guys have an idea of what could be happening on my Mac Pro, I'll be very glad to read it. I'm not really keen to send it to maintenance for several reasons, one being that after not even two years of age I still consider it a "recent" computer, the other being that with the holiday season coming up, I wouldn't like to see it go away for weeks!
One more thing I'm a freelance graphic designer, I've been working with Macs for more than 20 years and I take good care of my machines.

I finally received the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and after I've installed it, I was able to boot the Mac Pro on Windows (I got the PC version of the card so it needs to be flashed before it can be used with Mac OS X) and this time, everything went fine; I tried the games I've had problems with earlier and they all ran perfectly.
I then successfully flashed the Radeon so it's now compatible with Mac OS X and Windows, but I still have a power problem: the card is sold with two Molex-to-PCIe cables whereas only micro PCI-e connectors are available on the Mac Pro. There's the option to use the SuperDrive's Molex connectors but there're only two of them and four are supposedly required (see note below) to sufficiently power the card. This means the picture is scrambled in Mac OS X and when trying to boot on Windows, a blinking power error message is displayed onscreen and booting stops.
Note: in the Radeon manual, it says (with nice illustrations) that the card requires two full PCI-e cables and that Molex-to-PCI-e adapters aren't supported, *although the card is sold with two of these unsupported cables ONLY!* However, before flashing the card, Windows booted successfully with those two cables so I don't quite understand the logic behind all this...
Anyway, I've ordered the missing full PCI-e cable (I already have the one that came with the NVidia card) on eBay (amazingly, this cable is impossible to find in France!) When I receive it, I'll post a final message in this thread to let you know if my problems are now solved.

Are you getting an "!" in the window when you try to edit a photo. The "!" means that the library has lost the file path to the original file. This happens when there has been an interruption to iPhoto while it is writing to it's database file, Library6.iPhoto. Moving, renaming files or folder inside the library package while in the Finder is another way you can get that indication. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Display dies, processes stop, but fan is still running?
I was computing like usual, IMing, listening to music in iTunes, and surfing FireFox, and suddenly the music turned off and my display turned off. I moved my mouse around but nothing happened. I could still hear it making noises. I just pressed the power button and it came back on to a black and white screen. The screen was exactly what I was doing when the display turned off. The loading bar filled, and each process started as the color wheel went around and around.
I became concerned when it happened again 10 minutes later. So I shut down entirely, and it's been OK for the last 20 minutes. Does anyone know what's up? I can't afford to have this baby serviced.Hi,

Plug-ins disappearing, but they are still installed!
Yesterday I went to use some plug-ins that I always use and they where gone. The plug-ins list was cut in half: some where still there, some where not. I rescanned the plugs and some reappeared, but a lot of them are still gone. Curiously I opened a project from a few months back and when I checked the plug-ins from within that project, they where all there.
Has this happened to anyone before? I hope there is a fix other than re-installing everything again.Check whether are are using mono or stereo tracks. Depending on what the plugin declares to the host, some plugins may or may not be available by default depending on whether you are inserting them on mono or stereo tracks.
Otherwise, I don't understand why plugins would "disappear" on a by-project basis, as the available plugins are a system-wide thing.
Remember there is a difference between what plugins are "available" to Logic, and what are instantiated in your project...
