You can also check [this reference|http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/startupitems.html] When you start up in safe mode you are disabling certain functions, including airport. You were able to start in safe mode so that narrows things down since if it was bad RAM that would also affect safe booting.
We still haven't determined if this is hardware or software related. Try reseating the airport card as the other poster recommended. Your disks came with a hardware test utility, and Disk Utility on your disks tests for directory corruption which could lead to software drivers not working. If you don't have your disks this creates a problem using those utiltities. There is a startup mode called single user mode that lets you run a file checking command similar to Disk Utility, but this is a command line Unix style interface and I don't know if you'd feel comfortable with that.

I have got 8gb RAM, 4gb stock and 4gb i bought second-hand. If it is this RAM that is causing the trouble i will replace it asap.
Anyone any idea what the problem might be?

All three programs are possible cultprits. Uninstall them all, see if the KPs stop, then reinstall them one by one to see which is the cause. (May be more than one.)
You can temporarily uninstall them, one by one, using this command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. That way you won't actually have to uninstall the entire program. You will need to find the exact name of the .kexts by navigating to /System/Library/Extensions. Observe case and all spaces as written in the example, below. You will need to unload all four vmware.kexts.
    sudo kextunload path to file.kext/
    To reload
    sudo kextload path to file.kext/
    Here is an example.
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo command, you will get a warning. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see typed on the screen and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded/loaded. Then just close the window.

  • Mavericks + Reboot/kernal panics when Mini DVI to DVI adapter plugged in to 2008 iMac

Hi, i'm encountering a problem with my brothers iMac from 2008. We are attempting to add a 2560x1440p external monitor. When I first plugged in the cable, along with the Mini DVI/DVI adapter, the computer reboot, went to the grey screen, and then said "Your computer restarted because of an error, press any key to reboot" type message, then does it again. I tried plugging in just the adapter, and got no kernal panic, so it's only when info/power is transmitted through the cable.
I googled it extensively but couldn't find any solution nor even a hint of a solutiion. I suspect it might be the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2400), but I don't know. A few years ago we connected a 720p TV using a MiniDVi/HDMI adapter, and it worked, but the resolution sucked and it was more of an experiment.
I should add we installed Mavericks yesterday if it makes any difference. I also asked the seller and and he confirmed the adapter was a DVI-D, which is what the external monitor requires. Here is the Problem Report given after removal of adapter and reboot. Thanks for any help.

  • Kernal Panic, Finder Crashing, Overall poor Performance

I've had the Finder crash a ton lately. I've done an erase and install, no change. Got a Kernal Panic 2 days after the erase and install while installing Logic Pro. Talked to a Genius, could be hard drive, ram, Logic Board. I have a Console log from the KP here.

Could It possibly be an external drive I have plugged in via eSATA. The Genius recommended that I replace the internal drive but I don't want to do it if I that's not what's wrong.
    Anyone have suggestions.

    This line got my attention:
    com.SiliconImage.driver.Si3132(1.1.9)@0x6c5000->0x6d8fff
What do you have installed or attached that has a similar name? I had KPs on an older Mac and it turned out to be an unneeded hardware driver that the log reported in about the same position as your "SiliconImage" entry.
If that driver is part of a "must have" program or piece of hardware, see if a newer driver version is available.
Search the Apple forums for com.SiliconImage.driver and also Google it. I see several references to eSATA cards that use this driver and that upgrading to a higher version helps. Silicon Image makes chips and maybe complete eSATA cards.

  • Kernal Panic early in boot up.

Got myself a brand spankin new MBP 15in 2.4 the other day!
But, first time bootin the sucker up, got a kernal panic not 2 seconds into boot. Didn't even get past the white screen with the apple logo. Hm... Not a good sign... Especially when you're booting it up for the first time at the apple store
Ok, shut down, boot up again. Oh! Kernal panick again. Hmmmm... Shut down, boot up. No problems this time.
So I thought, well, I guess that's that.
Then just last night, tried booting up again, got the same kernal panic at early boot.
So I figure it's probably only when the computer is cold booting. Which seems to me like it would be some kind of hardware issue.
Good thing for me I got AppleCare after learning my lesson with a harddrive on a powerbook but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks of this just for my knowledge.
Laptop is sitting in my car right now, off, hopefully cold enough so that when I go to the Apple store later today it'll panic for the nice guys at the store.
By the way, this is the first product I got with AppleCare, am I supposed to set up some kind of appt. with them or can I just show up?
Message was edited by: Musashi Strebe

Well, I took it back to the store to get it exchanged, but they decided to run an Airport upgrade that apparently isn't released through software update... AirportExtremeUpdate2007004.dmg is the file.
So far, no kernal panics... and it's been 2 weeks. Granted, I don't shut down my computer often now that I've completely transferred from my old powerbook.
The laptop does freeze occasionally coming out of sleep, I don't think it's a related issue, but I'll search on it anyway.

  • Kernal panic: help me solve the mystery.

    Hey-oh.
I've got a kernal panic on my hands. It's happened about half a dozen times this afternoon and I don't know what is triggering it. Just wanted to start this thread to see if anyone could help spot what is up. The screen gets dark and the restart dialogue box appears. I shut down, restart and while the loading bar on the white Apple screen takes about 5 minutes to fully load before telling me an error happened and giving me a crash report. The reports seem to be sending fine.
I installed new RAM myself  a few weeks ago and that has been working great. I only ended up doing that because I kept getting serious RAM errors (3 beeps, black screen) with the Apple installed RAM. So far, not a great experience with my iMac

Chrome has been crashing today so I thought it might be that but it's still happening when Firefow is the only browser running. Tried closing as many apps as I could and have just deleted a few most recently installed unimportant programs.
If you see anything suspicious in the report then let me know. In the time being I'm going to try the other suggested courses of action. Posting this hastily before it happens again.
    Thanks,

  • Kernal Panic with Airport every few minutes

For a few weeks now my MacBook Pro began to have kernal panics once every 3 or 4 days. These kernal panics always happened at home and almost never at work. At work I am always plugged into Ethernet and at home I connect via an Airport Snow base station - 802.11b. So I have read a few post talking about the same exact issue as mine. Last night I got to the point where my MBP had a kernal panic every minutes and eventualy started to get the kernal panics durning the apple boot screen (Grey apple logo on darker gray back round).
So I booted into Safe Boot and then repaired permissions. I was able to do a normal boot after that however I did kernal panic over and over every few minutes. So I decided to upgrade from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8. Before I did this I trashed my airport prefs and ran another repair on my disk permissions. The upgrade went well. I noticed that my boot time is about 30 seconds longer and about 15 degrees cooler - Based on Core Duo Temp .
After work I turned on my MBP to test the airport and within about 20 seconds of sitting idle and not a single appliction open I got a Kernal panic...
Is there somthing anyone can suggest. Something I haven't tried or maybe a work around until the issue is address in the next release of Mac OS X.
I will post some of my panic log below which only goes back 5 days. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. My next step is to call Apple but I thought this forum would be faster.

No updates available for this machine, so I'm not sure what to do. Panic never occurs at home, only at work. And only after moving to a new office. The big difference is that I many more WLANs at the new location. Perhaps its the amount of them, or one specific that the AirPort cannot handle properly. Waiting for apple patch ....

  • Kernal Panic... clues?

I was just installing and testing some RAM on my brothers G4 PowerBook and I got a kernal panic. After rebooting I was pulling up the system preferences and got another one.
I can't tell from the panic log what's going on, maybe someone here has a clue for me.

Unsure - just look at this checklist to make sure you have not missed one of the easy & common causes... but you have probably done all of that!
    - +AHT should be on the system disk that came with the PBG4 17inch...+.
Never heard of a dmg for that...
"Getting frequent Kernel Panics? Here is a short list of good troubleshooting steps from The X Lab website:
    1. Repair disk and permissions with Apple's Disk Utility. Start off by *repairing disk permissions*. If that doesn't help, restart from an external Firewire drive or the Mac OS X install disc to *perform a full disk repair on your boot drive*.
    2. Rule out major hardware problems. Run the *Apple Hardware Test* _that came with your Mac_. Be sure to test for defective RAM which is a leading cause of Kernel Panics."
    _http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287_
"Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode overnight is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics.
If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button.
The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure.
We have read of cases where RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run."
"3. Confirm you have sufficient RAM and disk space. As a rule of thumb try to have at least 5GB of disk space on your Mac OS X boot drive, and 512MB or more installed RAM.
    4. *Restart in Safe Mode*. Hold down the Shift key immediately after you hear your Mac's startup chime. You should see the words "Safe Boot" in the startup screen. If a Safe Boot resolves the Kernel Panic, this implies a Startup Item or Login Item may be the cause.
    5. Disconnect all external devices. Try disconnecting everything except an Apple mouse, keyboard, and the monitor. Do the problems go away? Start troubleshooting devices and drivers.
If these steps fail to resolve the problem you may need to reinstall Mac OS X or get additional help from an experienced Macintosh technician..."

  • Another Kernal Panic Tread

    Hi everyone
I saw that there was a recent thread on kernel panics, and I have studied it and got about as much info as I could glean from the great links in the thread. Kernel panics are new to me, but I am not new to mac. Here's what's happening with my Mac Book Pro.
May 5 - in a meeting - online wirelessly using Firefox latest version, Thunderbird is open as well. - closed MBP - opened a little later and got the message that the macperson sitting next to me recognized as a KP. I restarted - loud beep and restarted ok. I put it out of my mind. Been working fine
May 19 - this morning - same scenario as above except this time I was plugged in for power - waking up from closed and sleep I got another Kernal Panic. I checked panic.log and saw it had happened on April 12 as well, but never before. While I cannot remember what happened on April 12, I do recall that last month I did have a crash when waking from sleep, but did not see an error message.
-I have no usb or firewire devises hooked up, but I am connected to my Epson printer wirelessly through printer sharing and my isight G5.
-I have checked all the crash logs and they are difficult to decipher, but I did not see anything that happened the same on all those days besides the crashes.
-I checked my installer logs and I have not installed anything accept Apple Updates anytime recently. -I verified my disk - all ok.
    -I repaired permissions.
-I downloaded and ran Memtest - it says all is well with my memory (1gb, allthough it said it was testing 443mb). It is not new, but what came with the MBP.
Is there anyone who has heard of Kernel Panics happening during waking from sleep in particular? Can it be that just repairing permissions will have fixed it?
Thanks for reading through all this and let me know what info I can give to help. BTW - here is the report from the panic.log. All three are the same except for the dates:

  • Kernal panic while re-installing OS

I recently bought a new MacPro and now I'm trying to get the old one ready for sale.
I removed the Boot Camp partition and then tried to erase everything on the hard drive using Disk Utility but it wouldn't let me do it.
I then tried to use the original Instal disk to do an erase and install but as soon as it started up I got the kernal panic screen.
Seeing as my old MacPro is a 2006 legacy MacPro but has been upgraded to Snow Leopard am I just creating problems by using my old install disk.

Thanks macbig, I read the article you linked to but couldn't find anything that lent it self to my problem.
I'm only getting the panic when I try to use my old original install disks to do a clean and install.
It could well be my updated video card but I was hoping I would not have to take it out and plug in the old one again.
I guess I will try the SL install disk and see if I can get something to work that way, at this point I have nothing to lose but time.
Like hatter recommended I did have a back up bootable disk for this computer but after I transferred every over to my new one I now use that as a backup to the new one.
I really wasn't worried about losing any data with the old one seeing as I would be fixing it up for sale and reinstalling the OS.

  • 10.5.4 Produces Kernal Panic

Hi! I just updated to 10.5.4 via Software Update and upon restart got a kernal panic. Another boot into safe mode got me going again with the log it wants to send to Apple which indicated the KP was caused by the Geforce 6200 agp card I recently installed. Another regular boot after the safe boot seems to have gotten it going again although I noticed some weird graphics blinking during startup I hadn't been seeing before. But it seems to be working. Is anyone else using the 6200 card? thanks, Tom

Hi! Update....after repairing permissions I did another restart only to suffer a KP again. A subsequent restart in safe mode got it booted and a subsequent additional restart again got it booted. I'll try the combo updater to see if that makes any difference. Tom

  • Sudden, persistant kernal panics

    Hi all.
I am suddenly having a ton of kernal panics. I know there are other threads about this, but I wanted to start one that had my specifics to see if anyone has any ideas.
I had been working on my PowerMac G5 all day on Monday without incident. Suddenly I got a kernal panic. Odd, but no big deal. I rebooted and soon after startup, I got another one. I shut the machine down, came back later and things seemed OK. Then I got another panic. I re-started, heard the chime, then about 5 seconds later, the machine shut off. I turned it on, heard the chime, and 5 seconds later it shut off again. Thinking maybe it had to do with my UPS, I plugged the G5 directly into the wall outlet. It booted up and all seemed well. I updated all my software to the latest version, and a few hours later, kernal panic. I removed all external devices, I re-boot, it loads up and a few minutes later kernal panic. I re-booted again, an that's when it got weird.
During boot-up, I got all sorts of weird writing on the screen, which looked like the old kernal panic (early OSX). The machine sat there frozen. I re-booted and it booted up OK. I used Disk Utility to repair permissions, re-booted and all seemed OK. I worked for an hour, and KERNAL PANIC!
I re-booted, and got the weird screen during startup, re-booted again, OSX comes up....instant kernal panic. I tried re-booting off the OSX install disk, but it seemed to ignore the DVD and booted from the HD.
Just so you know, when this started, it was after an 8 hour day of working. I did not install new software or hardware. Anyone have any ideas??
    Thanks!

I am trying to help understand what to do.
And a panic is a hardware failure. The system is not to be trusted.
Prevention. Have a plan, a strategy, an emergency system.
It is / was time to get the tow truck and mechanic to look under the hood.
It is not "life as usual."
Using a system in such a state and after any freeze can only make it worse until resolved.
You said you had seen and read some of the other threads and articles, but they didn't hit home on what to do.
I call a kernel panic and what to do a "wake up call."
Sometimes it is as simple as a shorted or bad USB or Firewire cable.
You should post and ask, but there wasn't enough detail or background, and no one can pull a rabbit out of a hat and know what caused your particular machine and system to die and panic.
A 20 step check list of things to rule out, maybe.
When someone comes into the ER, you don't get offered cookies and cake, nor do you want to, you want to know what is wrong and bandages. If "Stop using your system!" seems severe, so be it.
Hopefully anyone after 5 yrs on these forums and using a G5 would also have along the way used a bootable backup and has a spare system that they can use. And has learned to repair their system, learned not that some things are vulnerable and have their weaknesses, like HFS Extended, doing upgrades and updates without backups.
A panic can be from corrupt nvram and 'zapping pram' on a system is probably the first thing that could be done.
I use to get chastised for posting the same "10 rules" type list of what to do when a system crashes, so I stopped, and yet you see the same problems and errors over and over being repeated.

  • Kernal Panic in Startup

    Hello
I have a MacBook Pro 17" (not unibody) with the GeForce 8600GT graphic card. The last two days my computer has had strange errors. The screen starts flashing, and the computer freezes. The only thing to do is to power off. When I started the computer again I got the Kernal Panic during startup. I've done a hardware test, and it found no error. Changed the harddrive with a new OS - same error. Reset the "cmdalt+PR", same error. I then took out the Airport card, and then it worked perfectly.
The next day the same problem came back (even without a Airport wifi card). Restarted the computer, and got the Kernal Panic during bootup. I reset the "cmdalt+PR", and then it worked.
What is wrong with the computer? I don't think it is the usual nVidia error with the 8600GT card.

The Nvidia problem isn't something that is always "there", Andriaz. It occurs, as I understand it, because of heat stress generated by the GPU on its connection with the motherboard, and is accordingly potentially "progressive" rather than "there" or "not there" (Some companies, I gather , have been making a living by simply reflowing the connections between the GPU and the motherboard accordingly when people have not been able to obtain service under the extended repair program.)
So the fact that you "tested" for the NVIdia problem in the past doesn't mean that you might not be suffering it now.
My own experience of the NVidia issue involved blank screens rather than KPs, but I gather it can be manifested in a variety of ways (which makes sense given its nature). Given your log results I don't think you should discount the possibility that this is the cause of your problem. I'd get it tested again.
Have you tried running the basic Apple Hardware test using your original OS DVD set yet? Might throw up other possibilities. As BB suggests, from the description it is likely to be hardware related, I think.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Kernal panic, Safe Booting

I have an old Macbook Pro with a Snow Leopard operating system and a battery on its last legs - I keep it plugged in all the time.
Yesterday, and again today, I got the Kernal panic screen. I tried resetting the PRAM to no avail, and finally got the computer to start up again by doing a Safe Boot twice.
In the first Safe Boot (both times) the kernal panic screen I got upon restarting changed from one with purple and blue vertical lines behind the 4-language-message to a gray screen with the kernal panic message, and in the second Safe Boot (both times), the computer successfully started up. Yesterday, I rebooted the machine after the second successful Safe Boot and it started up normally and worked fine until the next kernal panic.
I know that I probably need to reinstall the operating system, but can someone help me understand where the problem is in my machine?

    Is this what you needed?

Dragging your hard drive to the bin wont do anything harmful to your data as all dragging drives does it unmount them and sinc eyour system was active it wouldnt have unmounted your main drive.
also windows doesnt natively support HFS (OS X drives) formatted drives, you need to go to a 3rd party company to be able to access it, macdrive is the best iirc but it will cost you.
you could try starting your macbook with the system disks and using disk utility to check/repair permissions etc, if that doesnt bring the drive back to life then maybe just re-installing the OS over the top of the old one, it should ask you do you want to keep user data as is or archive it... if it doesnt then i would stop as you may need to use diskwarrior to check the drive and avoid any lost data.
