Java SE 6 update 1 swing apps run slow

When I first installed JDK6/JRE SE 6, Netbeans 5.5 and 6 (M9) ran beautifully. All GUI Java applications were quite responsive, and I never noticed a speed issue. However, last week Netbeans started running slowly. You could practically see the entire screen being repainted from top to bottom over the course of a second or two. Naturally, this gets quite annoying when attempting to write code since everytime I scroll, I have to wait a second for the screen to repaint itself. At first I thought this was just a Netbeans issue, but I notice that every other Java GUI app also repaints very slowly. I've been trying to think back as to what could possibly have changed in my system to cause things to run slowly, but can't think of anything.
I tried reinstalling the JDK and JRE (as well as Netbeans), but it does not seem to have fixed the issue. The reason I'm posting this under the Swing forum is because I suspect this is a Swing issue -- applications that I have written that do not utilize a GUI seem to run at the same speed as before.
Any suggestions as to what might be causing this slowness?

could it freezing be related to my delay in updating it ?

    Hi Ginny,
There are no more updates for Java from Apple for 10.5.8, the only way to get a Java upgrade is updating your OSX.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they do still have it:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
And it's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account Apple will send one free.

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

  • IPad 1 updates makes apps run slower and crash

    Hello everyone,
I have 34 updates in the app store until now, i always updated everything to the latest but noticed things are getting slower and very crashy, the updates are obtimized for newer ipads so likewise it gets slower on the old ipad, i dunno why it notifies an ipad one user to update?? Its not for me!
So, should i keep updating apps?? Sometimes i think that its intended by apple to get old ipads not to work properly to get me think about a new ipad, well devices  like ipad is not something to discard after a while you know, i will stick with it until it burns or somethin :P

As far as I know - you can't update apps if they are for the new iOS only. The apps shouldn't update and you should get a message that the updates will not work on your iOS.
Tap on app icon that needs to be updated and read the description first. Don't tap on "Update". Read the requirements first. If the primary reason for the update is that it is optimized for iOS 6, then don't update it - even it even can be updated that is.
Some basic troubleshooting might help when the iPad gets "crashy". Try these and see if they help.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad and make a fresh start. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Or try this ....Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Since the last automatic update, Firefox has been running slow as molasses, with a refresh box coming up constantly. What can I do to correct this?

Since the last automatic update (approx. one week ago) my Firefox has been running slow as molasses and I keep getting a "refresh" box popping up when the pages get hung up (very often)
What can I do to correct this? I clean my cache out at least once daily - most days more. Virus scan says I'm clear of viruses - Glary Utilities tells me that all changes to my registry have been fixed (sneaky apps trying to get in) I'm going crazy because I am used to my FF being fast! HELP!!!

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • All apps running slow in one account and not the others on my iMac

I have iMac (intel) 20" with Lion 10.7.3 with 4 GB of RAM. The problems is that  one of my accounts all the applications run very very slow.
This account is one of two admin accounts. None of the other accounts have this problems. Does anyone have a suggest of what I can do.
I have tried reloading Safari, thinking it might be related to the recent flashback virus. I event downloaded a script from Mashable and they indicated that there was no Flashback Virus on my iMac. I also download that latest update from Apple for the JVM
So my questions is what is causing only one of my user accounts to be very very slow and it seems to be affecting all the applications.

Most likely corrupt or conflicting preferences files. While logged into the good admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which stores the data in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Why AWT apps are faster than Swing apps?

I have written applications using both AWT and Swing. While running under Windows, I feel that AWT apps are much faster and smoother. In contrast, Swing apps fare terribly. Regardless, I can not go back to AWT because of thier limited capabilities.
I love Java APIs, it is great for programmer. But what about the consumers? Consumers do not care whether it is written in Java or Visual C++?
I am having a mid-"programming" crisis. I do not want to but, but would be forced to use VC++ for desktop apps abandoning Java.
I would like to know if you are a serious desktop programmers, what is your motivation for using Java, not VC++ or something?
    Thanks.

well, for me, it's that one it's Platform Independent. and that does come in handy when your work uses macs instead of normal PCs. Second, it's free to use, unlike VC++ and Pseudo Code (Visual Basic), you don't have to pay unbeleivably large sums of money to get a good compiler. And then there's the whole "Swings Apps are Slower", yes they are, however, if you program them write, they only take a while to initialize, once that is done they run as fast as any Native Program unless you have a tremendous amount of calculations and dynamic generation of components. And also the no Excecutables, true, and... not true, creating a Jar File is almost the same as making a making an EXE, only Jar Files are... platform independent.... and unlike C++ which gives you enough rope to run around the world three times, jump over the moon and hang yourself for actually using it, Java is a clean programming language, not a whole lot of those nasty characters and styles that ugly up your code. at least these are the reasons why i pick Java as the language to come out on top of all others.

  • SWING app just vanishes on win xp

Hi running out of ideas on this one, we have a swing app running under 1.4.2, and on one of our testers machines in India, he is reporting that the app just "vanishes". I am unable to reproduce the problem here on my install and in my IDE environment. It doesn't always happen in the same place or doing the same action in the app. I added a security Manager to monitor for system exits incase a third party lib was calling System.exit. however when looking at the Logs the System exit routine is not called. (it is when I do a normal app shutdown, so that at least is working). Does anyone have any pointers on how I can trap this, or find out more info on what is occurring.
the xp machine has 1 gig of memory and 2.6 ghz processor.
    Any pointers gratefully received.

The files are created in the running directory.I have no other files in the running directory, other than the redirected stdout and stderr, files and in there, is nothing that I wouldn't normally expect. One possibility I have thought of is that the JVM isn't actually crashing, that an external process is ending it, similar running an app in a console and hitting ctrl[c] (on windows, to kill the process). I have read about shutdown hooks, and was wondering if these may help. Does a shutdown hook always get called, even if I were to end/kill a process say from (Task manager or process manager) any one have any experience of shutdown hooks? - thanks for responses so far though.

  • Java Swing apps cause Windows 2K to hang

I have an IBM clone machine running a P4 and Windows 2k that hangs whenever I try to exit out of a window in a Java swing app. Whether the window is the main application window or a menu window instantiated by the application to be a child of the main window, does not matter. It hangs regardless. I have tried multithreaded apps and they do not cause my windows machine to hang. Neither do simple swing apps. But any multithreaded swing app causes it to hang. JEdit causes it. Forte causes it. I am running Java 1.4.1. Thanks for any help in this.

Freezes under Java 1.4.1 with Windows

Installation This is turning into a FAQ, so I thought I'd post it on the community site. A lot of people have complained that jEdit can hard freeze their windows system after upgrading to Java 1.4.1. If you experience this, the problem is not with jEdit, but with your video driver. Updating the driver to the latest version should solve the problem; downgrading to Java 1.4.0 might also work.

  • Keyboard Problem while running Swing App on LINUX

    Hi All,
We have a Swing based Application running on Windows Platform. We need to run the Application on LINUX. The Application does not have any problem and runs without problems for a few minutes but after that the keyboard stops to respond inside the application. Keyboard runs fine outside the application but no key events are recognized inside the application. Mouse is working fine even after the keyboard stops responding.
    Key Points:
The keyboard is a PS/2 keyboard.
Read Hat Fedora 5.0 is being used.
The problems occur on both KDE and GNONE.
         The Java Version is jdk1.5.0_09
The application is data entry application using EJB at server side. The client UI has lot of JTables and Desktop Panes/ Internal Frames. User use ctrl+tab, ctrl+shift+tab, tab, shift+tab, and other hot keys to navigate between Components. Listeners on keyboard Focus Owner are also used. We are unable to diagnose the problem because of the undeterminable nature of the problem. The problem occurs at anytime and does not occur on any special key/ combinations press.

I've just installed the JDK 1.4 on my debian box. I
can compile and run a basic Hello World app using
System.println, but when I try to run a simple swing
app, I get an error like:
    Exception in thread "main"
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
    at java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method)
    at java.lang.... etc, etc.
It goes on with about 30 different classes. It
compiles fine, with no errors, but when it comes time
to run, that's what I get. This is what I have in my
.bash_profile as far as environment variables go:
    export JAVA_HOME="/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1_01"
    export PATH="$JAVA_HOME/BIN:$PATH"
    export
CLASSPATH="$JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/:$JAVA_HOME/lib:."The code works fine in Windows, so unless there's
    something platform-specific, I don't think there's a
problem there. I've checked to make sure I'm not
running kaffe by accident and I'm definitely running
the right java and javac. I'm out of ideas. Any
    suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I may just be crazy, but your PATH looks a little screwy to me. I was under the impression that the standard java installation has its executables in the 'bin' directory, not the 'BIN' directory. Unless Debian has fallen to the evil empire, then I'm fairly sure file names are case-sensitive. I don't know if that will fix your problem though. Do you compile from the command line, or do you use an IDE???

  • Is it possible to run my swing app in another jre

    Hi All,
I have a swing app jar deployed in the server having jre. It may be possible that the client may have a lower version of jre. In that case would it be possible to download the jre itself from the server (local server not Sun server) and then the run the application in the downloaded jre. The client may be in windows or linux. Please give me steps to go about it. Am new to web start. Please help ASAP.
Thanks to all the folks out there keeping the java community alive and kicking

    Hi Andy,
I wanted to bring the jre on the client machine on par with the one in my server which hosts the application to be launched by web start. I had posted a query on how to install a newer version of jre other than using the sun's auto installer site. I had to search high and low for such a solution. Finally got a set of servlets called web start services from the following site :
    http://lopica.sourceforge.net/.
It helped me to host the jre installer on my server itself which woulc be used by the client to install a higher version of jre if required. I was trying to install a runtime installer of jre as per their instructions. I created a jar file called jre_1.5.05.jar created by doing a jar -cvf on the jar directory. And gave the j2se version required as <j2se version="1.5.05"> and then my helloapp.jar. Everything goes fine during the installation. It also asks me for the reboot and I did the same. However when I try to run the application, it says
"Bad Installation. Error involving Java VM (SysExec) and then points to the directtory inm the cache as .ext/E11332440658/bin/javaw.exe.
So I went to the directory .ext/E11332440658 in the cache. and I see that the jar has been in jarred as jre_1.5.0_05/bin/javaws.exe which should have been the actual path where web start should have looked.
Do you have any idea why it happened? Is it possible to correct it without doing anything manually at the client side? Please reply ASAP.
    Zeus.

  • Font warning when running swing apps

I am seeing this warning when I run my swing app using JRE 1.4.0.
Any ideas on how to get fix this?
Warning: Cannot convert string "-monotype-arial-regular-r-normal--*-140-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct

As a follow up to this, it appears that you need to download OS patches to correct this problem.
Use this as a starting point:

  • JAVA / SWING apps, font AA / LaF KDE 4.3

    Hi Everyone,
I know the title is terrible, but here is my problem:
I am using Netbeans for most of my development projects. I am very happy with it; however, the look and feel of Netbeans (and most other Java apps, such as FreeMind for example) is appalling and does not integrate into my KDE 4.3 desktop at all. I understand that you can start netbeans with certain options to change the look and feel to GTK, but the fonts still look jagged.
I followed this forum post http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=72892 and tried to set the JRE / JAVA options globally, so that all java apps start with GTK laf and AA. However, non of the methods described work / netbeans overrides them (?).
But really, the biggest problem are the ugly fonts. Java / SWING apps do not seem to recognize my KDE settings for AA and font style at all. And non of the Cl options work to fix it.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks to fix any of these issues I am having with the combination Java / Swing / KDE / NB?
    Running:
    Archlinux (duh)
    KDE 4.3 / qt-gtk-engine
    sun-jdk 1.6uX
    Netbeans 6.7.1
    Thanks!
    KnY

I added what I knew about improving Sun java fonts to the wiki:  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Jav … _-_Sun_JRE.  You may want to try other fonts than B&H's Lucida.  See the section in the wiki article about changing the default fonts by editing 'fontconfig.properties'.

  • Latest java update vanished from App store!

Saw I had an update, so opened App Store. It was a Java update. As I was reading the content, it vanished from the page, and the little "1" next to "Updates" also vanished. Restarting App Store and clicking Update icon did not retrieve update. Anybody know why this might have happened?

Yes, Grant, I saw this on the Java website:
"Oracle's Java version 7u25 and below have been disabled by Apple on OS X. Updating to the latest release will allow Java to be run on Mac OS X."
If Apple has disabled Java, should I leave it as is, or is it important to have it? It seems that Firefox & Safari still run some version of Java, but I don't see any version of it in my library or elsewhere. Maybe that's why the update vanished, because Java's not there to begin with?
