Java smart home

hi, since i read the article about the ".com home', i am interested to develop a smart home using java technology where the devices (light, heater etc) could be remoted by mobile phone.
but i have no idea where to start and what needs to be refered
can anybody help? thanks

This could be done as three apps, each learning diff. techs.
X-10 Controller - Either using JavaComms API and talking directly, or looking for a pre-existing Java API for X-10 devices.
WebApp - Servlets/JSPs, talking to the X-10 Controller software.
J2ME Controller - The J2ME APIs, the Gernic Connections system.

  • Need a recommendation about java smart card and a reader

I've been posting some message in this forum and others and haven't gotten a clear response.
I want to experiment with java smart card technology.
From what I gathered, Gemplus is a leading company in this field so I thought about buying a smart card reader from it and a java smart card.
I thought about buying the "USB Smart Card Reader/Writer Plug n Play (GemPC430)" reader which costs 69$.
    Is this a reasonable price?
I need an answer from someone with experience using it.
Now then, which one should I buy?
I only want to do smart card to desktop application interaction without anything on the web (e-commerce or anything to do with encryption).
    I can buy 5 "GS2.2 Standard Crypto GPK8000su512 RED"
    cards which cost 87.50$
    THATS A LOT OF MONEY!!!!
Are all java smart cards that expensive?
There is a list of other cards on their site but I haven't been able to locate their price and don't know which to buy.
Finally, there is the "Kit, GemSAFE Enterprise Workstation 2.21 Standard Cryptography Serial Port Reader" which as I read consists a GPK8000 card.
Is this card a java card?
Or do I need to buy the reader and java card seperately.
Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I've looked closely at the Cyberflex 32K cards + SDK from Schlumberger.
    My criteria was:
    * Javacard 2.1 support
    * visa open support (or whatever it is called now)
    * complete sdk (develop, test, deploy)
    * exportable
    * upgradable
    * customer support
I tried to get someone from Gemplus to contact me, but was unable to ever get even an
    email response.
Schlumberger, on the other hand, won me over with the quick responses over email.
They offer fairly inexpensive upgrades after you buy the product, and technical support
    is free.
For simple experimentation, you can get the JavaCard SDK for free. At JavaOne, several
years ago, they were giving away JavaRings with Card Readers (which presumably
means these are cheap to buy) from SCM or some company in Texas. You might
try to get one of these. They don't have much memory, but are an interesting twist
    on the Java Card thing.
If you want to dive in, the Smart Card SDK from Schlumberger will run you about $499.
This includes the reader, 5 cards, and the SDK. Likewise, Metrowerks puts out an
IDE for Java Card which runs about $1200, and may be available as a bundle from
    vendors like Schlumberger.

  • Help needed in learning the basics of Java Smart Card and implementation?

    Hello every body,
I am trying to develop the applications on java contactless smart cards technology.
Can any body give me the details like how to start?
What are the required softwares and installation procedure and path settings and etc.?
I am the beginner in java smart card application development.
    plz help me out

    Dear Friend,
I would advice to divide learning into two main parts: JavaCard technology and contactless RFID cards. For JavaCard technology you can find useful articles on Sun web-site (developers.sun.com/mobility/javacard/articles/javacard1/). For contactless RFID you can find few useful books at Amazon. Regarding software you need JC development kit. How to install it there is an instrunction in JCDK user guide.
If it is not a secret what a javacard contactless card you are going to use in your work?
    Yours
    Dmitri

  • Lock the doors? Turn off the lights? Lower the thermostat? In search of a "Smart Home"

Blog courtesy of Verizon #SmartHome Ambassador Jean Parks (@geekbabe)
Have you ever wished for a ‘Smart Home?’ I don't know about you but I've longed to be able to control my home heating/cooling, lighting and security all from one central place that I can access from anywhere I might be. Yes, there are various individual systems out there but few of them do it all, and having to deal with multiple accounts, passwords and bills frankly annoys me.
Here’s what’s on my smart home wish list (besides a robot to fold my laundry!):

The idea is great and when we go on vacation it would be great to be able to keep an eye on the home.... BUT... would you believe that Verizon has no facility for an internet only provision when putting your services on Vacation Hold?
That is a big ommission - we should not have to pay for TV and Home phone when on vacation just to get the internet service! Without an internet connection none of these great monitoring and control ideas will work. Paying for all of the services when we are away from home makes no sense!

  • Compression with Java/Smart Cards

I am a Software Development Student. I am currently researching the area of data ZIP compression in conjunction with Java/Smart cards. Just wondering if anyone has come across a similar project and if so where?
    Thanks.

We can't deal with real compression, as you known the jcvm is composed of the converter and the jcre
the compression is related to the converter.jar
There are many ways to produce compressed code compared to an original not optimisez code.
Real comresion is not really possible on a such support, the processor is not enought fast. In my mind, the only compression possible can be the rle. Not very brilliant if it is not used for images...

  • BT Smart Home Cam 100 - Remote Access

I have just purchased a BT Smart Home Cam 100.
No problems with setup and getting it to join my home network (BT HomeHub3/BT Infinity).
Using the iOS App works fine when on the same WiFi network as the camera but fails to work away from the house. I have tried various WiFi networks (public and private), 3G/4G, nothing works. I get to the menu showing the camera but when I select to stream the video it can't connect (eventually I get the Limited wireless bandwdth error).
I have tried changing the camera video streaming quality settings from Auto to the lowest image size and still nothing works.
Do I need to setup anything on the BT HomeHub3 (ie port forwarding, etc)?
I can find anything on how it is working under the covers (network protocol/port wise) to allow me to try and resolve it.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Apple Smart Home Technologies?

I'm preparing to build a new house and I would like to implement "Smart Home Techologies" into the design.  I've read that Apple and Google are entering this space and as such, I'd like to find out that they have on the market (or in development) so the house design can accomodate "Smart Home Techonologies".   Does anyone know who I can contact at Apple regarding this?

The AppleStore product description says it fits both iPad 2 and new iPad.

  • How to specify java (jdk) home on Unix

    Hi
On Windows, the file dmu/dmu/dmu.conf has the "SetJavaHome" parameter, and this works as the docs specifies.
On Unix (Solaris), the docs states that thsi is specified in the file $HOME/dmu_jdk, but I cannot get this to work.
And specifying JAVA_HOME and/or setting the jdk/bin catalog in first the PATH does not help.
It consistently uses picks up my jdk version 1.5 located in the /usr/java catalog, regardless of the environment variables and and dmu_jdk file (if I create it manually).
    Am I doing something wrong?

  • DataModeler 4 MacOS Java 7 Home

The Oracle Data Modeler 4 launcher.sh script correctly looks at the environment variable JAVA_HOME to find a JRE/JDK.
However, the datamodeler-Darwin.conf file has the following path set explicitly - therefore resulting in datamodeler looking at java 6 even though java 7 is installed and JAVA_HOME is correctly set
    SetJavaHome /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home
The quickest solution to get this working and make datamodeler automatically detect the correct JRE is to
simply comment/remove the above SetJavaHome line from datamodeler-Darwin.conf
    And everything will work fine.
I hope the future releases will not have this path set explicitly in the darwin conf file.
    File Paths:
    OracleDataModeler.app/Contents/Resources/datamodeler/ide/bin/launcher.sh
    OracleDataModeler.app/Contents/Resources/datamodeler/datamodeler/bin/datamodeler-Darwin.conf

just realized that it works if opening from the shell as
         $open /Applications/OracleDataModeler.app/
and not when clicking on the app from finder directly.
    options may include
    1. updating the plist file
    2. set the path in datamodeler-Darwin.conf
    3. add the following file to OracleDataModeler.app/Contents/MacOS/datamodeler.sh
    export JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/libexec/java_home)

  • Any idea on how to make a smart home?

Is there anyway to use bluetooth microphones to station throughout your house to all simultaneous link to your iphone (iphone plugged into an AirPlay hub). So when you use Siri any microphone in the house can pick up your voice and broadcast Siri's response throughout the wired house via AirPlay. It would in essence be like having your house wired like a car is wired for "eye-free" driving. You would be able to access and hear siri from any room regardless of where your phone was. I know you need to press the home buttom to activate siri, but there are alternative accessories to fix that. My main concern is not the location of the home button.

No, you can't have that many BlueTooth connections.
