Java Swing and Socket Programming

I am making a Messenger like yahoo Messenger using Swing and Socket Programming ,Multithreading .
Is this techology feasible or i should try something else.
I want to display my messenger icon on task bar as it comes when i install and run Yahoo Messenger.
Which class i should use.

I don't really have an answer to what you are asking. But I am developing the same kind of application. I am using RMI for client-server and server-server (i have distributed servers) communication and TCP/IP for client-client. So may be we might be able to help each other out. Are you opening a new socket for every conversation? I was wondering how to multithread a socket to reuse it for different connections, if it is possible at all.

hmm. well, your requirements are almost contradictory.
Not sure about books, except maybe dusty's.
Most python books cover at least some network programming (unless the book is topic specific).
I use lots of python-twisted at work. I mean ALOT. I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for non-tedious though! I also like gevent/eventlet (esp. the async socket wrappers).

Help needed with swings for socket Programming

Im working on a Project for my MScIT on Distributed Computing...which involves socket programming(UDP)....im working on some algorithms like Token Ring, Message Passing interface, Byzantine, Clock Syncronisation...i hav almost finished working on these algorithms...but now i wanna give a good look to my programs..using swings but im very new to swings...so can anyone help me with some examples involving swings with socket programming...any reference...any help would be appreciated...please help im running out of time..

Java WD and Socket Communication

Hi,
Is it possible to use Java Socket Communication with Java Web Dynpro. Or if not what is the best approach to have a Java Socket program integrated with a Web Dynpro Communication.
Basically, I have an application which provides API for communication via Java Sockets.And this needs to be integrated in our SAP application.

Hi,
You are currently using JCO to "Connect to a Remote System" - JCO will connect to a back-end with the main purpose of "executing BAPI's" in it.
When you move to WebDynpro, you have what SAP calls Adaptive RFC Model - this will create a "Model Entity" in you WD Project that will do the same thing your JCO does.
Assume your JCO now calls "BAPI_GET_FLIGHTS", to return the Flights that are currently available - In your newly create WDP Project, you will manually specify what back-end you wanna use when "Importing" and you will tell also the BAPI name. WDP will generate the class structure that you need in order to execute that function.
JCO is what SAP created to execute BAPI's. JCO can be used by any "Java" like application that needs to connect to the back-end. But when you move to WDP, you don't need to use this anymore - You will use WDP Models.
Youi will still need your JCO Destinations created in the Application Server, so behind the scenes WDP creates a "layer" so you don't need to code the JCO calls manually.

Daemon and socket programming

Hi,
I have been given a new project whereby I have to:
1) Write a class with a method that takes as an argument an xml document, communicate s with a SOAP server and return the SOAPs response (in this case a ResponseWrapper object).
2) This then has to be implemented as a Daemon, that listens to a particular socket.
The reason for this being is that it can be uploaded to a server, allowing a pearl program to send the XML to the Daemon, have this contact the SOAP server and then return the SOAPs response back to the pearl program.
I am aware that this sounds unnecessarily complicated but it does have to be implemented this way.
I have written the class and it successfully communicates with the SOAP server and returns a response, but have no idea how to implement it as a Daemon and have had no experience with socket programming.
Could anyone point me to a tutorial or give me some pointers in how to get started?

that due to security issues it would take to long to
write all the necessary checks and interceptors
(which I know how to do), so I should implement it
this way (which I don't know how to do); since it is
sitting behind the firewall it would not be
accessible for spoofing.Huh? You realize that tons of very sensitive information is transmitted all over the internet using Web Services right?
I have had no experience
with implementing this type of thing before, What is your level of experience then? This may be over your head. I'm not saying that sockets and daemons are advanced concepts, but I wouldn't throw a beginner into that task.

Java Swing and windows listview control

many programming languages have the listview control, to which you can define diferents kinds of data's organizers as Icon, Detail, List, etc.

Java Swing and Flash

Is it possible to create flash components (swf files) and include them in a Swing JFrame and be able to post data from and to it.
For example, if the swf gui is showing a list of items, the list is coming from the Java application and then the SWF file gets included in a Swing JFrame. When user chooses an item from the list and clicks a button then the results is passed back to the Java application.
Has anyone done something similar to this? How is this possible? Code samples would be appreciated.

Problem with Java Proxy and Socket Connection

Hi Gurus!!
I have developed a Java Proxy that connects via socket with a Server Socket application. This Server Socket application accepts more than one connection at the same time.
When I connect the first time from my Java Proxy, the connection is correctly established. When the first connection opened, if a try a second connection, this is not established.
I use "new Socket(SocketServer,SocketPort);" to open the connection.
I think that all time the Java Proxy is trying to open the same connection, and this is a problem.
Is there a way to indicate to the server that is a new connection and that the existing connections remain?
Anybody could help me, please?

Java swing and threading issue

i am trying to update swing components from some thread. at my first try, i noticed this was a disaster. upon further research, i found out about the single-threaded model of swing events (i.e. event dispatching thread).
i did more research and could NOT find a good example on how to update swing components from other threads. many examples were showing too much.
can someone post a simple example on here? i just want to see how to properly update a swing component from a non-swing class using threading.

Java Swing and WIndows User Localles

HI,
We need to develop a java applet/application which can be switchable at run time to accept and display characters in multilanaguages. This java applet will run on a windows 2000 server with multilanguage pack installed. Is it possible to dynamically switch languages at run time. The machines default localle and operating system installation is US English.
We have tried some tests with traditional chinese and UI components in Swing but with no success in displaying or inputing valid chinese characters. Has anyone attempted a simliar thing and have any insights that may help.

Java NIO and sockets in 1.4.1FCS

Hi,
I have built a client server system using the new 1.4 java.nio packages. In 1.4 everything worked fine, yet in 1.4.1 FCS it definitely does not. The process is as follows.
Everything work in non-blocking mode:
- Server receives connection and accepts it, the new SocketChannel is put in non-blocking mode and registered with the same selector as the server.
- New SocketChannel waits for data from the client so it waits for OP_READ from the selector. All it gets is OP_WRITE, OP_CONNECT. With 1.4 it received OP_READ, OP_WRITE.
I tried adding a call to finishConnect, but that didn't help.
Anyone have any thoughts about this?

The code in the bug report is incorrect. The key will of course always be writable if you do not write anything to the socket! And since it is writable the readable part of the code will never be executed (its in an else-statement). When you are not interested in the OP_WRITE, change the ops on the selection key.

IPAddress and socket programming

hi frens,
I'm doin a project of storage area networks in which there could be as many servers or storage devices in the network.
My problem is if suppose a particular server on the network is communicatin with other server how will i know the IpAddress/name of the other server which is communicating.
Is there any direct method in java.net as such by which i can get the IpAdd/name of the other server talkin to a particular server.
IF not how do i go bout it?

If you have the server name then DNS look up will work. You provide the server name rather than the IP address and the DNS server on your network will translate it.
If you want to discover the server on your network it is more complicated. Basically you iterate through the IP addresses on your local network and try to connect to each. There might be a discovery protocol in place for this already (you broadcast and they respond) but that depends on the service.
And as a word of warning, if you are working at a company/institution with a security adminstration then you should get authorization from your supervisor in writing to run a discovery interation on the network. Any firewall of any sort will flag such a process as a hack attempt and will notify the security adminstration - which could get you fired/terminated. With the authorization your job/position is protected. Basically if you don't know the head of security on a first name basis then the company/institution is too big for you to take the chance.

Need help with a java loop and word program

do you know any way to get a Scanner object to select a random string in a text file?
ok pretty much I have a text file that isa list of 5 letter words. I need to select one at random.
the only way I could think was to scan the file, get the entire nu of words, have Math.random choose a random nu then loop scanner.next() and have the loop condition run the Math.random amount of times
but... when I do that I CANT ACCESS THE WORD OUTSIDE THE STUPID LOOP grrr...
i'm annoyed lol
this is the loop code that selects the random word

Java Swing/AWT and FX is so old school! Give me HTML and CSS for GUI!

Dear Java,
I am a seasoned programmer and I feel it's time JAVA implements a GUI system where it uses HTML and CSS for the GUI. For the love of god just look at the interfaces you can make using HTML and CSS alone. I am a big fan of Java Swing and the recent GUI designer for FX is quite cool. But they are just not as simple as HTML and CSS. And JavaFX has some interesting requirements for the graphics.
I know it is possible to use JavaFX and implement the WebView/WebDriver and make it load a HTML page, etc... but why go through all the trouble?
Just imagine... if you make Java where it has powerful back-end to do what it does best and the HTML/CSS powered GUI on the front-end. It will make the lives of many developers much much easier.
I am not sure whether a Swing designed GUI will be faster than a HTML designed GUI... but if you look at a traditional browser and how fast it renders HTML/CSS, I am sure if Java had a native Form where it uses HTML and CSS to render the GUI, Java will make the dreams of many programmers a reality.
Make it happen!!!!
