Jerky performance in iBooks widget and Animate Deployment Package

Hi folks,
I'm making a interactive children's book using Edge animate as I wanted it to be full of rich interaction, animation etc. My plan is to make the whole book in Edge and then drop that Edge file into either iBooks author or Adobe DPS. When I preview the work in Chrome through the actual application of Edge it plays perfectly, really smoothly and with no lag at all.
However, when I export as an iBooks widget or use the Animate Deployment Package option and preview through either iBooks or DPS then I see a marked reduction in performance. There is a slight lag between tapping an item and the animations starting and they play through in a slightly jerky fashion.
I read a discussion on these forums where the person said they had noticed the same thing when they had used symbols in their work. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of my project, I have to use symbols. Is this just how it is?
It's not absolutely dreadful, and if if that's how it is then I can live with it - but I would prefer it to be as smooth as it appears on my browser previews.
Any thoughts or suggestions on what I can do to improve the performance?
Thanks,
Tom.

Hi Elaine,
Thanks for getting back to me.
The largest graphic that I animate is 1024 x 768, but I didn't notice any particular drop in performance between larger items over smaller ones. I did notice that bitmaps suffered more from the jerky framerate than DIV elements created within Edge, but I guess that's to be expected.
Most of the images are .pngs because they need to be character's arms, legs etc to make the figures animate, so that must be the issue I guess. I've probably just been spoilt from seeing it run so smoothly on my desktop browser!
The 'symbols' comment was something that I thought was odd too - I only mentioned it as it had been brought up on the forums in relation to playback issues in iBooks.
Anyway, like I said it's not dreadful so I'll just have to live with it as I can't optomize the graphics to not have transparency in this instance.
Thanks for your time,
Tom.

  • Difference between "Web" and "Animate Deployment Package"

    What is the difference between "Web" and "Animate Deployment Package" in Publish? They create the same HTML file when published (and after you insert the .oam file). Are they the same?
    Also, if I use the "Web" publishing target, how do I then get the animation into a page?
    I am hoping there is a difference and that my animations not displaying in BrowserLab will if I publish using the "Web" settings.

    Hi, DOD-
    The "Web" publish will output files that can be posted to a webserver and hosted there.  For more information on how to integrate your animation into a webpage, see this thread here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4741310
    The OAM file that is output from the "Animate Deployment Package" selection is a compressed file meant for integration into InDesign or Dreamweaver.
    Hope that helps clarify things for you!

  • Why do I get an error message when trying to publish animate deployment package?

    I continually get the following error message every time I try to publish an animate deployment package.  I have no idea what Poster3.png is.  There is no image in my file with that name.  I have tried saving my composition under a new name and it doesn't resolve the issue.  I have no idea how to fix this.

    You may get this error if you had done the following:
    - create a comp and save it
    - publish to OEM
    - delete the poster in file system
    - publish again
    Workaround:
    Go to the composition click on stage and generate a poster image from the properties panel.
    Now publish again.
    Let me know if this works.

  • Can you embed an Animate Deployment Package without Creative Cloud CS6?

    I've got Dreamweaver CS6, but it's the downloaded version, not the version that is available through the Adobe Creative Cloud.
    So it does not have the option to Insert > Media > Edge Animate Composition.
    I'd really like to embed my Edge Animate project as a single file, rather than a bunch of directories. And I'm hoping this is still possible.
    Can anyone embed an example project file, then post the code that Dreamweaver writes?
    Thanks!

    Same here. Macbook Retina 15", purchased earlier this year.
    Nice (and free) utility to monitor GPU-usage is:
    gfxCardStatus from http://gfx.io/
    Helped me to notice that it's better to quit Photoshop if not using it because it still uses the nVidia GPU if Photoshop is not even the active application (eg. running in the background).
    But still, sometimes after closing Photoshop, gfxCardStatus says that nVidia GPU is in use for process 'Creative Cloud'.
    I'm mostly running on battery and nVidia GPU consumes much, much more battery than the integrated, Intel HD Graphics 4000 so this is a big issue for me.

  • IBooks Widget Audio Issue (Edge Animate)

    Hello, my name is Dominic Redding. I've been working on an HTML5 widget for an iBook (testing via iBooks Author). I've been having an issue that I just can't seem to find a fix for (I've checked through these forums, the Apple forums, and some other misc forums, and each "fix" has failed me). I'm implementing my audio via Edge's native audio implementation (using the newest release) and set the play to a div visibly off of the stage. My problem is:
    I have audio in my project which triggers each time a button is tapped. On the Ctrl+Return browser preview, everything plays A-OK. When I put the .wdgt into iBooks Author and preview it onto an iPad, the audio refuses to play entirely. When I test the .ibook on Mac iBooks, everything works perfectly. When I test the .ibook on an iPad, it fails again. I'm using .m4a audio files.
    I'm trying to figure out how to get the audio to play on an iPad (and/or why specifically it will not play on the iPads) and I need some help. Thank you for your time.
    My .ibook file for anyone who wants to prod: https://copy.com/AGuFcv60OxZW

    I figured it out. I tested the audio I was jQuerying against audio set to play in the Edge Animate interface. The Edge interface audio played perfectly, so I looked through my notation. Edge's sym.$("element")[0].play(); automatically resets the audio at its beginning. I had set the audio to have currentTime = 0 and then play, which somehow messed up the order of the audio playing and prevented sound on the iPad.

  • IAd Producer and iBooks widget help

    Hello!
    I'm trying to use iAd Producer to create a drawing widget for an iBooks project. So far, I've been able to customize the standard drawing object and it works flawlessly on the iAd Producer Preview and in Safari, but not on the iOS Simulator nor the iPad.
    In the widget, there are 2 brush sizes available (small and large) and I'm trying to give visual feedback to the user, letting them know which one they selected. Initially I started with buttons but that didn't work because buttons don't have a style for on/off to let the user know that that button is selected.
    I switched to radio buttons, which works great on the preview but not the actual device. Here's the code I'm using:
    HTML:
    <label class="brushFrame">
    <input id="smallBrush" class="brush" type="radio" name="brush" value="small"><img src="assets/brush.png" />
    </label>
    <label class="brushFrame">
    <input id="largeBrush" class="brush" type="radio" name="brush" value="large"><img src="assets/brush.png" />
    </label>
    CSS:
    label.brushFrame > input.brush {
      display:none;
    label.brushFrame > input.brush + img {
      cursor: pointer;
      width: 50%;
      height: auto;
      position: relative;
      z-index: 1;
      transition: all 0.1s ease-in-out;
    label.brushFrame > input.brush:checked + img {
      opacity: 0.75 !important;
      z-index: 10 !important;
    Basically, the brush should become transparent when the user selects it and because it's a radio button, it will stay transparent until the user selects the other brush. The iOS Simulator and iPad are able to render all the CSS correctly, except for when the radio button is ":checked". Background: This is my first widget and I'm very comfortable with CSS but not JavaScript.
    How can I make this work?

    Many thanks for your reply patixa. Apologies for my incorrect typing of IDs, in my iAd code they do match.
    I have managed to resolve the problem as follows:
    All of my iAd content was originally on the Background layer. Placing the content on Page1 has resolved the problem.
    I'm not certain as to why the project worked in iAd producer preview/Safari/Widget preview but not in iBooks but no matter, switching to Page 1 solves it completely.
    I notice from a few of the problems people have posted that they have a similar situation and wonder if this might be something that would help them. I've not posted replies but wonder if someone more experienced might offer a view.
    Many thanks again to patixa, your kindness is greatly appreciated.

  • How can I perform a clean erase and reinstall on my iBook G4?

    Hi everyone,
    I have misplaced a help article that I successfully used to perform a clean erase and reinstall on my iBook G4.
    I've been trying to get the erase and reinstall started by inserting the software restore cd (disk 1 of 8) that came with my computer, but the cd doesn't give the option to erase and restore.
    When I try holding down "c" after restarting (right before I hear the dong sound), it just boots like it normally does and I still don't get the option to erase and install.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks so much,
    Allison

    I don't know fiberoptix. The above poster mentioning 8 disks would be talking about Panther, whereas in your case I am not sure what the second tiger DVD has on it.
    I suggest you post a new topic in the Tiger forum here:

  • How to Create a trigger code for turning on light bulbs in flash and animate images professional cs6

    hi,
        i designed a very interactive music website in illustrator and photoshop and i am trying to animate the main page design in flash professional and eventually publish it as HTML5. There are couple of questions i need to ask before starting
    1) should i import my design in differnet layers from illustrator into flash professional in order to make it easier to isolate and animate specific parts of the web page?
    2) i want to have a roll over effect that allows certain features in the page to turn on and off when the mouse hovers over them. can you explain how to do that? any tutorial videos i could follow
    3) what format should i use when importing my illustrator design into flash professional
    4) how should i animate the content pop out from the safe box into the main screen in flash professional (i have never used this program before, so i will be going off video tutorials and whatever suggestions/help you would have)
    **The idea is to have a content frame fly out of the safe into the screen (the size will increase rapidly and it will fade into the screen as well while rotating 360 degrees for one revolution). The content is a basic rectangular frame i designed in illustrator. The body of this frame will be transparent allowing me to embed the main page features into it eg music, videos, bio etc. All this will be done in the later process, the main issue is figuring out how to animate the content frame into the screen and also creating a click feature that allows the content to fly back into the safe and then the safe closing in.
    Secondly, the trigger code rollover effect that allows certain features light to turn on when the mouse hovers over it and turn over when its not.****

    I think you'll get most flexibility by turning on the feature that lets you keep your Illustrator layers as Flash layers. You'll also want to check the box that lets you make an Illustrator object into a MovieClip for anything that you want to interact with or address through code.
    Add an event listener for MOUSE_OVER that triggers whatever functions you need to create to turn on the features. This means that your object that you will mouse over will need to be a MC, as well as any other objects that will be addressed (for example, calling play()) will need to be a MC. You'll want to have a matching MOUSE_OUT handler that stops MC's, hides them, or whatever.
    You should probably organize your Illustrator file so that the objects you need to address are on their own layers. This includes nested objects. Name things informatively. Remember, if the first import doesn't give you exactly what you want, you don't have to save the change--you can edit your settings or the Illustrator file and try again.
    Look into motion tweens. I highly recommend the books "How to Cheat at Flash" and "Animation with Scripting." I don't really think the way they tell you to script will advance your career if you want to be a software architect, but if you just want to animate the occasional widget, it's fine.

  • Completely frustrated by iBooks Author and iBooks

    I have been writing in iBooks Author for a while to produce a book. I loved what was shown by Apple as possibilities. My book contains a lot of diagrams, the source material are vector images (SVG or PDF). These images are sometimes large and are unreadable, unless the user can zoom in and pan/scroll around.
    Given that iOS is PDF-based and that HTML5 has SVG I assumed (mistakenly) that iBooks and iBooks Author would support resolution-independence vector images. Indeed, it will accept PDF often, but on creation of the .ibook, it produces low resolution bitmaps. There is no decent way to create image viewing that enables a user to look at a diagram that cannot be read on page size of an iPad2. Interactive Image will allow larger images (up to 4096pixels wide in landscape mode), but to let the user zoom you need fake viewpoints that point somewhere and in all, creating something where the user can pan/scroll/zoom is ugly and a pain.
    I have been looking at HTML5 widgets to see if one can get around this. But here too, iBooks Author seems not to allow SVG in those (just displays empty, so does iBooks Author kills the SVG on export from .iba to .ibooks?). SO, I hoped the standards of iOS (PDF and HTML5) woul dsolve any problem, but iBooks Author seems to make sure it does not work.
    I am so frustrated that I am close to giving up. iBooks Author and Ibooks need (for me):
    - handling vector-images (SVG and PDF) (come on, Apple, how can you be so slow with supporting resolution independence, especially given Retina iPads?)
    - the ability to let the user pan/scroll over large  images that can be zoomed in/out
    And I am not talking about stupid things like not being able to replace an image inside a picture element with a new image without losing the picture element and having to manually redo all the links to it.
    It has been more than a half year since Apple released iBooks Author. Unless I find a way to let the reader investigate larger diagrams, preferably interactive ones, e.g. created as a HTML5 widget with SVG objects in it, or unless Apple delivers a product with less problems bugs and such, my project needs to move away from iBooks.

    Thanks, but I am not going to try anything else. I have lost any trust in iBooks Author that I can get this right.
    First, it means buying Keynote just for this experiment and besides that means that my images all end up in a widget (I have many inlines now) which will also not be exported properly in PDF.
    I am unhappy enough that I have to buy Pages to save my project (if I had known this in advance, I would probably have written the book in TeX and try to find a decent paper publisher) and lose all the nice interaction ideas I had.
    If iBooks and iBooks Author still exist a year after I have finished my old fashioned book, maybe. So far, this looks like another beta-never-to-be-kept-alive-in-a-decent-way product attempt at Apple. Stuff gone like iWeb or iDVD (colleague bought his Mac, used iMove to create a Movie and wanted to create a DVD. Turns out he needs to shell out $99 for Roxio to do that. Not a happy camper).

  • 3D Widgets and Contact with Dev Team

    Hi there folks, Top Of The Mornin' from a new member of the iBooks Author community based in Ireland.
    My company has just uploaded an iBook to the store, and are awaiting approval for the various markets.
    When we initially installed iBooks Author, we were very interested in the 3D Widget capabilities as our background is real-time 3D.  Using the tried and tested trial and error approach, we were able to work through some of the issues, right from the basics ( how to get a textured object to appear ), through to more advanced options ( animations, setting up scenes for eye-cam view rather than spin around view, balancing the pivot point for more complex spin-around views ).
    The iBook we uploaded uses 3D widgets extensively ( almost on every page ).  During its creation, we had however a number of crashes with iBooks Author, and we hope to work with the iBook Author team to help get these resolved ( it's most likely that the bugs are there as 3D Widgets are fairly new and haven't been pushed to their limits so far ).
    We also have a number of feature requests for 3D interaction that we have implemented in our own custom 3D interactive scenes ( eg http://www.armaghplanet.com/3d ), that we would like to engage with the team to see if some of them can be introduced to the 3D Widgets in order to help both ourselves and of course any other iBooks author who wishes to use a 3D Widget within their content.
    Regarding getting in contact with the dev team, there doesn't seem to be ( or at least I haven't seen ) a way to directly contact them.  Hopefully there is a forum which the dev team visit and answer questions / chat with iBooks users about requested features etc.  If someone could help point me in the right direction for a contact, I would be very grateful.
    Many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice on this...

    The only official avenue for contacting developers I know of is to join the Apple Developer Program and submit bug reports and feature requests. I've submitted quite a few bug reports for IBA, and have received fairly timely responses, typically asking for more information, such as memory dumps.
    For anything beyond this, I suspect you will need an inside contact.

  • Can't POST FormData from iBooks widget on iPad

    I have a Dashcode widget that simply submits contact information from a three-field form to a PHP script on our server. It works properly when run/debugged from Dashcode. But when I drop it into iBooks Author and preview it on an iPad (either v2 or v3), the XMLHttpRequest POST no longer works properly. On the server, the form is ocassionally received with a request type of "OPTIONS" instead of "POST" so none of the form data is available to the server-side script. The content length is also reported as 0 (zero) on the server. Other times, the data is received correctly, but the widget's onerror function fires instead of onload, even when a 200 status is returned from the server.
    The code worked fine in both Dashcode and on the iPad in a test iBook. Then I tested it after disabling wifi to ensure that errors would be handled properly. It hasn't worked again since enabling wifi. It could be a coincidence. I've relaunched iBooks, deleted and reinstalled the book, restarted the iPad, restarted Dashcode and iBooks Author. I've even created a new widget with nothing but a Submit button and hard-coded form values:
    function submit(event)
        var formData = new FormData();
        formData.append("name", 'Name');
        formData.append("email", 'Email');
        formData.append("question", 'Question');
        var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();
        xhr.open("POST", "http://www.example.com/example.php");
        xhr.onload = function(e) {
            if (this.readyState == 4) {
                if (this.status == 200) {
                    helloText.innerText = 'Success';
        xhr.onerror = function(e) {
            helloText.innerText = 'Error: ' + this.status + ': ' + this.responseText;
        xhr.send(formData);
    The widget is set to Allow Network Access and "10.4.0 (backward-compatible)". Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

    I tried saving the .ibooks file and sync'ing it through iTunes instead of using Preview, but see the same result. The post data was received successfully on the server. Although the server sends a 200 status code, the widget's onerror function fires and reports a status of "0" and empty responseText.
    This is a step in the right direction. But we can't use it if we can't properly provide success/failure feedback to the user.

    Hi all,
    I've got a vanilla deployment of Business Objects Enterprise XI 3.0 Premium, with some Webi and Xcelsius content added in.
