JES 2005Q4

What's new in this release? Is it like a patched Q1? E.g. does Q4 contain the fixes the patches for Q1 addressed? What does one gain (or lose) other than time, installing this? Is there an upgrade?
Thanks,
S7

I installed the JES 2005Q4 according to the instructions for an eval for 2005Q1, and things went ok - but: I had to re-run the setup for communications express to get that working, I would get the 'screen flashing' error upon login, common to a bad amadmin binddn (could this be validated during the setup? would save headaches), experimenting with a different binddn, i would get the iplanet webserver's default index page, with the laurel?calendar=1 (sic) appended to it. and going to messenger exp, or cal exp, manually, i'd be logged in - so the sso was working. re-running the setup though made comm exp work.
To answer my own question, it seems that with a clean install of solaris 9, and the 9_recommended cluster - and 2005Q4, the ES cluster is still needed? Several patches were applied when I ran it - it's what I did before re-running the setup for comm exp. thinking that may be the problem, not sure if it was re-running the setup (probably) or the patches (probably not) that made comm exp. work. in any event here are some problems/questions:
in msie - the trash folder in comm exp does not show its contents, though this is not the case for mozilla. does delete = move to trash?
moveuser will only seem to work where there is an admin user with explicit functionality to move users (which my current imap server lacks) - i tried to simply set up two accounts in a client, and copy msgs from one imap folder to another, works, though with some errors (on badly formed email?), and is slow. there are some other utils out there, imapsync (requires several perl mods, mailutil from uw (haven't tried), etc.
there is a postmaster group now visible in the DA, I tried to make another mailing group - could add members to it but not an email address for the group - using the DA gui. It seems the postmaster group had some additional objects, looking at it in the DS console - could I add these to my group, to add the email address for my group. Would these objects then show up in the DA, once I did? - for future editing there.
Also even though I used commadmin to create users with the -k legacy command, I couldn't get into their calendars with comm exp. until I removed the <@domain.com> from those 3 calendar objects? What is a hosted vs legacy setup anyway?
When partitioning the disk, what will hold the user's mail and attachments, etc.? What slice needs to be big on an ims server? /var?
I am getting this error upon startup (any ideas?):

  • Problem in Pointbase databse version update during JES 2005Q4 Installation

I am installing JES 2005Q4 on Solaris 10
During component selection under Sun Java System Aplication Server Enterprise Edtion 8.1, subcomponents Pointbase Database and Sample Applications are in conflict with the version.
Please let me know if there is any suggestion in that line
    -gotham

Is this first time you are attempting to install application server? or Do you have any installation on the system from prior versions?
This normally happens when the prior version of components or any incomplete installatation are found on the system.
You can run the uninstaller from '/var/sadm/prod/SUNWentsys4' to clean up any partial / incomplete installations from the system. (In case, You've attempted to install something before).

  • JES 2005Q4 Windows release date?

I see the JES 2005Q4 documentation is up for the Windows Server platform. Although in BETA.
Currently evaluating JES 2005Q1 for migrating system from Messaging Server 5.2p2 (also on Windows platform).
When is JES2005Q4 for Windows coming out?
    Eli

    Jay,
as always... your input is paramount and very
    welcome.
If JES2005Q1 was an experiment... why release it
commercially? And why is Sun charging full license
seat prices for defective software? It's like buying
a car and finding out that all buttons and controls
are glued on using kiddie glue... After an hour or
so.. it comes apart....Something you need to take up with your sales rep.
Gonna take this up with the Sun accountmanager.Almost 11 months have passed since the release of
    JES2005Q1.
Plenty of time to recheck and update both the
documentation and the code.Once documentation is released, it is NEVER changed. To have online doc different from printed doc in your hands is deemed to be too confusing. We do file doc bugs every day, and what gets changed is the next release.
    No activities there whatsoever.
    Are we in hibernation?
Whilst other releases on Linux/Solaris platform have
gotten many patches. Which is in itself both a good
thing and a bad thing. Too many patches, imply buggy
software needing patching up. It's like bringing
the car back to the dealer everytime to have the
buttons, nuts and bolts fastened again.
Mind you, these are patches meant to resolve bugs.
Not product improvements or enhancements.Again, please do take this up with your sales rep.
    >
If JES2005Q1 was an experiment for the Windows
environment... what assurances do I have as a
customer in the Windows environment that Sun will
continue to develop code and technology for that
    platform?Sales rep.
See my dilemma? (Note: I cannot introduce a new
Operating System platform in my infrastructure. This
would make the mailserver in itself more expensive
than any server on the Windows platform. Pure by
systems administrative and operative costs alone
talking man hours and salary here.)Well, I may differ with your analysis. I have Windows, Solaris, and Linux boxes, myself. I do extremely little admin work on the Solaris box, that relates to the OS, and not much more on the messaging Server. Since Solaris is free, I'm not at all convinced that installing Solaris on the same box that you might put windows on would be "more expensive" than windows.
    >
It's a bad thing to have documentation being written
by persons without knowledge of the product. It's
another bad thing to have grammar and spelling errors
in the scripts like "popaleting DIT......."
Hasty work is never done....Please show that to the sales rep.
    >
Even Messaging Server 5.2p2 stopped getting patches.
We have been running this buggy software on Windows a
little more over 2.5 years now since the last patch.
There are still bugs, no patches....Actually, there ARE hotfixes available for Windows post 5.2p2. You just have to contact tech support for them.
See my grievance... It's like there is no customer
care for Windows products. Then why bother at all?
I understand that JES2005Q1 is a complex product. But
that does not explain the spelling and grammar errors
in scripts and interfaces. That does not explain why
the software does not work out of the box (following
    the documentation).
It's like it was ported, coded and burnt or made
ready for distribution.. without testing the end
product in a lab environment. Ship of to the
dealers... "ow what's that you say... you lost the
rear mirror on the way over there? Don't worry... the
    customer won't notice it"
Releasing software is by no means an experiment.
Especially if you are going to charge customers the
full price of a seat plus maintenance. This is
disrespectful of customers. Customers run this
software in a production environment and provide
services. To provide quality services I myself and my
system administrators need to trust the product and
documentation. That trust has no foundation, it is
    all gone...
I don't know if any US (from headoffice) Sun
accountmanagers visit this forum, but you are welcome
to pass this thread on to them.I'm very sure no management visits this forum. I have become that voice that shouts "wolf" too often. They just don't listen to me.
They do listen to sales folk.
    >
Ending this ranting, cause I am saving the rest for
    the local account manager...
    Still no answer though:
What is the estimated release date of JES2005Q4?2005q4 for OS other than windows is released. When Windows is released is not something I know about. Ask your account rep to find out....

  • Installation notes: JES 2005Q4 on Fedora Core 4

    Hi,
Getting JES (with Portal Server 6) to work on a Linux platform (that's unsupported by SUN) can be a nightmare. Here's what to do with Fedora Core 4:
    1. You need to install compat-libstdc++-296.i386 rpm package. This provides /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 that the application server needs.
If you don't have that package installed, install with yum:
    yum install compat-libstdc++-296.i386
    Note: I used...
    yum provides libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3
... to find out the package.
Actually I installed compat-libstdc++-33.i386 as well, but I'm not sure did that affect anything.
    2. Install pdksh
There are many ksh clones available. Fedora Core 4 ships with some version of ksh that lacks features used by PS6 install scripts. You have to get pdksh from http://www.math.mun.ca/~michael/pdksh/
Configure and install it according to the instructions. Then get rid of the ksh that came with FC4 and make sure /bin/ksh points to /usr/local/bin/ksh (if you installed pdksh to the default location).
    3. Run the JES installer and everything should work out fine. The installation process meter still seems to hang when installing portal server but actually it is working hard for several minutes. You can verify that by using top.
More details on the problems that occur if you don't follow these steps (should help for other distros than FC4):
The installation process hangs when it gets to install portal server (verify with top that it isn't actually doing anything). This is because you don't have the right ksh. Using ps -aef you'll see that there are processes running ksh.
The actual problem is that the PS6 installation script is defining variables with the keyword 'local' that's not supported with ksh shipped with FC4. If you try to run the portal configuration script manually you get lines like:
opt/sun/portal/lib/postinstall_Base[21]: local : not found [ no such file or directory]
opt/sun/portal/lib/postinstall_Base[22]: local : not found [ no such file or directory]
opt/sun/portal/lib/postinstall_Base[23]: local : not found [ no such file or directory]
The JES installation program will not recover from this. So get pdksh!
If you don't have libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 the installation seems to work fine, but it will fail on deploying anything on the appserver (it won't be able to start the domain). This was the really ridiculous thing about the installer because it reported no errors even though it was failing to install anything on the appserver!
Hope this helps someone. Took me nearly two days to figure out.

Instead of downloading the source code for Korn Shell and going thru the manual compilation and configuration go to http://rpm.pbone.net and perform an advanced search for ksh for Red Hat 9.
    You will find : pdksh-5.2.14-21.i386.rpm
Here's the url for a mirror site:
    ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/fedoralegacy/redhat/9/os/i386/pdksh-5.2.14-21.i386.rpm
    Download the rpm.
Remove the existing pdksh by :# rpm -e pdksh
Install the ksh of choice: rpm -ivh pdksh-5.2.14-21.i386.rpm
I was able to install JES 2005 Q4 on Fedora core 5.
    Good Luck

  • JES 2005Q4 Administration Server Console Problem

Hello, I have installed JES on Sol 10x86.
I've used /usr/sbin/mpsadmserver configure to configure the Admin Server Console.
    I used the default user;admin
    I used a password that I know,
I used the default port of 390.
    when I type /usr/sbin/mpsconsole I put in
    user id admin
    password ********
    http://fqdn:390
It comes back with the error message
"Cannot login because of an incorrect User ID, incorrect password or directory problem. java.io.interuptedIOException:Http Responce Time Out"
I've used /usr/sbin/mpsadmserver unconfig to remove and reinstall it and still nothing.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I thought the proper order of doing things are:
    download sw image
    unpack.
read release notes and install guide
    acertain install sw/hw requirements
install required SW component, I think JDK/JRE 1.4.2 or later needed
    install required OS/kernel/LDAP/JES patches
    When encountering error...
read the error and/or access log file
read the install log file, usually somewhere, may be in /tmp or /var/sadm/...
turn on debugging mode of installer, if there is, someting like:
    # ./installer -d
    or
    # ./setup -d
The above is compressed archive install, I tried to avoid pkg install as pkg method seems more problematic, I may be wrong.
If you use the compressed archive method, then at the end of the successful run of "installer", simply:
    # ./startconsole
    instead of running "mpsconsole"

  • JES 2005Q4 installation problems

When I start the installation it is not copying any files to any folder. On the screen only this message showing:
    OrionUninstallersun-ps7_0-entsys
    %1
    OrionUninstallersun-ps7_0-entsys
    %41
    OrionUninstallersun-ps7_0-entsys
    %71
and after the installation I am checking the folders but there is no file copied under appserver, dssetup , or any other thing all of them empty. How can I fix this problem. I have downloaded this file PS7.0Installer_Linux (475 mb). I have unzipped and there is installer. I have run it like this ./installer . And I have selected portal server and enterprise aplication server. I have made configuration on setup. But there is no file copied? What I have to do? my os is
"Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 1)"

And where did you look? Normally it'll put this stuff under /opt.

  • SUN JES - migrating from Solaris to Red Hat Linux

I have some EJBs working fine on JES 2004Q2 on Solaris. I want it to work on Linux JES 2005Q4.
I guess all that I may need to do is:
    - Install JES 2005Q4 for Linux
    - Deploy by EJBs
Is there anything else I should be taking care?

No, you don't need to do anything special. Any application working on Solaris version of JES should behave exactly the same on Linux version.

  • Someone take my VISA!!! Sun JES strategy and SMB ==   need support.

    Hello --
I'm a VERY small company -- seven seats -- looking to license JES Communications Suite. Big thing: need official Sun support because components of JES 2005Q4 REQUIRE (!!!!!) tech support -only patches in order to operate with stability (reference: UWC threads in Messaging forum -- patches are required to product to work in production).
I spoke with Sun inside sales: guess use-license is FREE as part of promotion, but support is an entirely different matter (100 seat min).
Sun JES message: you can't get any Sun support on software unless you spend $5,000 (ie. 100 seat min -- JES Comm Suite with Standard suppot -- $50/head).
Surely, someone @ Sun marketing & product mgmt has head up darkness by essentially pushing SMB customer to "dark side" of Microsoft. A ten user company is not going to spend $5,000 year on email system.... period (not including hardware and datacenter).
    Summary from Sun:
"We'll give you the software for FREE -- but in order to run the software in production, you'll need to buy support for min of $5,000/year to get required patches."
    This strategy stinks. -GA
    ============ Info from inside sales.
So, let me throw out some numbers:
JES the entire package with support per year (minimum 100 employees)
    Standard support: $140 per employee
    Premium support: $150 per employee
Java Communication Suite only with support per year (minimum 100 employees)
    Standard support: $50 per employee
    Premium support: $60 per employee
There is no way to purchase support for under 100 employees, per the terms of the promotion for JES:
**Customers who wish to purchase support can purchase a commercial license for the Java Enterprise System, which includes technical support, updates and maintenance. Minimum number of units (employees) licensed is 100 under the commercial license terms. (pricing per above)

In addition to the subscription options, Sun also provides perpetual licenses for each individual component product. This might better meet your needs since you are using this for a very small deployment. If you expect your org to grow in size you could upgrade to a subscription model at a later date and take advantage of the unlimited RTU. Please contact Sun Sales to explore this option as well.

  • Where do I find/download Outlook Connector 7 2005Q4?

I am testing JES 2005Q4 on a Sun Sparc server. Calendar, Messenger and Communications Express work fine through the web interfaces.
Now I want to try Outlook Connector for Windows but can't find the installation program anywhere. It's not listed anywhere on Sun's download site and not included in the JES downloaded zip files.
    Thanks

The Outlook Connectors can be obtained by downloading the "Accessory CD #3 - Comms/Portal CD Image, English" iso.zip on the Java ES SPARC download page. To access the download do the following:
    1. Go to http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp
    2. Select Java Enterprise System
    3. Click "Get Downloads & Media"
    4. Click the Java ES Solaris for SPARC download icon
    5. Login to download center
    6. Download "Accessory CD #3 - Comms/Portal CD Image, English"

with the JES4 messaging and calendaring servers?
If yes, are there any gotchas we should watch out for? More important,
is it a good idea? And/or does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    -- Bob

    Hi,
As long as you can run comm_dssetup.pl against the directory install to set up all of the relevant schema and indexes, it should be fine.
Messaging & calendar server aren't fussy about the directory version - just the data structure and speed (i.e. schema & indexes).
    Regards,
    Shane.

  • UWC -- 2005Q4, web instance pegs CPU

    Hello --
arrived at office today to see recently upgraded web instance running latest UWC -- 2005Q4 (118540-21) fully pegged CPU (load ave in 5-6 range).
Nice thing: the web instance did respond to stop (ie. not hung).
The restart of web instance went fine -- and now UWC working as expected.
We've been running JES 2005Q4 for awhile now (upgrade more than month ago). Many users grumbling with various end-user issues with UWC -- various bugs. small little usage/behavior issues that are a pain when working in airport or Kinkos, etc.
With this most recent CPU peg issue: curious how many tech-support only builds have been released since      118540-21??
Note -- current upgrade 2005Q4 platform on solaris 9 with recent patches (per patch mgr 2.0). all shared patches applied. Directory, admin, calendar, mail, web, ID, and UWC all upgraded successfully.
Any insight would be appreciated. -GA

    Hey Jay --
Just went rounds with Sun inside sales -- attempting to license JES CommSuite in order to get support (and access to the tech-support only patches).
Essentially, no dice. As company with less than ten users, I can't justify spending min of $5,000 year just for licensing -- in order to get support.
    Please check following thread:
    http://supportforum.sun.com/sjes/index.php?t=msg&th=742&start=0&rid=17767&SQ=d3620791e3a9a9c7e2f58f8cbf1da831
Is this an "over sight" between Sun JES product mgmt and tech support (ie. offer software "free" to companies under 100 users -- but require support access in order to get latest patches in order to run software in production).
My take: the end-user oddities with UWC in JES 2005Q4 require fixes -- primary: many messages received from Outlook senders can't be read (displayed with [ndif!!]).
Thoughts and/or suggestions?? We are willing to PAY $$$ for incident pack -- but no one @ sun support will take my $$$.

  • After initial messaging server 'configure', amadmin can no longer log in

    RHEL 4, JES 2005Q4
After install, amadmin can log into amconsole just fine. Under Sessions, Max Session time is 120 minutes. But after I run messaging 'configure' script and restart webserver, amadmin user can only log in to amconsole for roughly 8 seconds before being kicked out due to session timing out. If I quickly click Sessions, it shows 0 minutes max time, 0 minutes left, etc. Trying to log in as admin user results in "User has no profile in this organization." message.
The install log shows a few strange things:
After a long list of "+F mailsrv mail 640 /some/file", the following:
    ===== Mon Dec 12 18:49:31 CST 2005 =====
    Running /bin/sh -c /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/imsimta clbuild -image_file=IMTA_COMMAND_DATA IMTA_BIN:pmdf.cl
    d
/opt/sun/messaging/lib/imtacli: symbol lookup error: /opt/sun/messaging/lib/libmailwave.so: undefined symbol: db_env_create_4002
    ===== Mon Dec 12 18:49:31 CST 2005 =====
    Running /bin/sh -c /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/imsimta chbuild
/opt/sun/messaging/lib/imtacli: symbol lookup error: /opt/sun/messaging/lib/libmailwave.so: undefined symbol: db_env_create_4002
Then a long list of "adding new entry" messages and the error 'ldap_modify: Type or value exists' repeats about 80 times or so. Then, a bit further down:
    ===== Mon Dec 12 18:49:32 CST 2005 =====
    Running /bin/sh -c /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/imsimta cnbuild
/opt/sun/messaging/lib/imtacli: symbol lookup error: /opt/sun/messaging/lib/libmailwave.so: undefined symbol: db_env_cre
    ate_4002
I am running configure as root, and libmailwave.so exists and is readable. The last line of an strace on 'imtacli cnbuild' has this to say:
write(3, "Internal error in cl_init -- can"..., 83Internal error in cl_init -- cannot open command definition file IMTA_BIN:pmdf.cld
but that file does exist and is readable by anyone!

the imsimta (mta cli) program is broken in Linux editions. There is a patch for that, currently available only from tech support.
Not likely the cause of your other issue, though.
Check what's happening in your ldap access log when you try to log in.
    Possible there's a clue there.

  • Problem with UWC and Mail Filters

    Hello,
We recently upgraded from ims5.2 to JES 2005Q4. With have patch -23 installed for UWC and patch -53 installed for the messaging server. Everything is going pretty well except we are having a problem with the mail filters in UWC. It seems that after a short time ( couple hours) the page stops displaying correctly. That is the buttons for example say new button instead of just new. When you click on the new button, you get a application 9 error. We have the java heap set to 1.5 gb and the webserver between .5 and 3% of the CPU. Response is great for all other pages.
Does anybody have any ideas? I have had a case open with Tech support since Last Monday, but still waiting for an answer, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Gary
