JMenu and About Boxes

I'm making a small program in Java for a Uni project and part of the specification is that the user should be able to select an 'About This Application' option from the menu bar which shows up asmal dialog box with some text and an OK button to close the box, but I'm not sure how to code this. So far I have...

I was wondering if anybody could suggest how I can add to this code so that the user can then click on Help in the menu bar, select 'About this application' and on doing so a dialog box pops up with some text information and the OK button.
Any help appreciated I'm in a bit of a fix here!

As a push in the right direction, look to use JOptionPane for creating simple dialogs. (dialog tutorial)

Unicode in About Box under Windows, CS5

All strings of my plugin are stored in UTF8 resources in kResourceUTF8Encoded string tables in the .fr file (the language I use requires Unicode characters). These strings include my company key, about menu key and about box contents.
They all appear correctly in the user interface of the Mac version of InDesign. However, on Windows, while my normal strings (error messages and similar) are all right, the company name, plugin name and the About box contents are not displayed correctly in the Help menu. Is there any way to make the Windows GUI Unicode compliant just like the Mac GUI is?

Hi. I've changed my hard drive on my macbook pro and wanted to reinstall logic pro but although I took the serial number from the "about" box it rejects it when I try to reinstall. It was an upgrade to Logic 8 originally. What can I do? Urgent!

Hello. I have installed a new hard drive on my Macbook Pro with OSX Tiger. I tried to reinstall Logic 8 Pro but it refuses the serial number when I try to install it. I took the serial number from the "About" box when Logic was still installed but no good. The software was originally an upgrade, and I don't think I have the disks for the previous version. What do I do? This is important because I only use the computer for music. Thank you.

There's actually an even simpler solution that doesn't include buying a new version of Logic. He can use his original version easily. Of course, that depends if the OP knows how to effectively use his computer though...

"About" Box, Robohelp 8, and Internet Explorer

I am having an issue with the About box in our custom-built skin and (seemingly) all versions of Internet Explorer. I have an About box configured that contains information such as our company name, copyrights, and a link to my email for questions. Since we have several different versions of our online help, we decided to add the current help version to the box. Unfortunately, one of our employees who uses IE 9 attempted to click on the About box and discovered that it was not there in the navigation bar. We use a graphic as the link, and the graphic was not beside the Search bar as it is in other browsers. I use Firefox currently, but I know it used to show up in Internet Explorer. We checked on my version (IE 7), and it was missing from there also. I checked the Properties screen in WebHelp to ensure that the correct skin was configured and that I had Add About Box checked, and everything seemed to be fine. The crazy thing is that I know the About box used to show up in IE 6 and when I first got IE 7. We really need to resolve this because most of our clients still have Internet Explorer. While it is not as critical as some of the other Help, the About box still performs a service and is the most appropriate place to add the current Help version.
Has anyone else had this problem with RoboHelp 8's About box and Internet Explorer? Does anyone know a method for making it show up in Internet Explorer (any version will do)? When I tested it, I had the pop-up blocker turned off to eliminate that as a cause, but that would not explain the graphic appearing either.

I'm wondering if rather than the IE version, it is more about upgrading to RoboHelp 8. Do you keep copies of the old help outputs in a way that you can tell which version of RoboHelp created them? I'm hoping that you can open a RoboHelp 6 or 7 produced output and see how that works.
Also you refer to a custom-built skin. Do you mean a supplied skin that you customised or you truly created you own skin somehow? Have you tried using a supplied skin to see if you still have the problem then?

JNLP version and the Mac About box

I have a JNLP file that I'm deploying to OSX clients. The "jnlp" root node has a "version" tag however it does not seem to update the version displayed in the "About" dialog box on OS X (Find menu bar -> Application Name -> About Application Name). This is a bit odd because the "title" node will certainly change the name of the application in this About box.
Do I need to handle the About box in my application or can this somehow be handled in the JNLP file?

You don't need to restart your computer to open Firefox again: you just need to close it manually through your application manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC in Processes tab). Anyway, hopefully this support article is what you need:

What's probably happening is that you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

Help needed in adding custom About box in built application in LabVIEW 2009

Hello,
Can anyone please help me add custom About box in built application in LabVIEW 2009? I had successfully built my application in labview 8.6, 8.5 and 8.2 before to include custom About box. However, when I tried the same method in LabVIEW 2009, it only showed LabVIEW 2009 About box rather than my custom About box.
Here is what I did:
1) Wrote an "About Application.vi" in the built VI folder;
2) Included this "About Application.vi" in the "Always Included" section of Source Files in Application Build;
3) Built the application;
4) Ran the built application, the About box showed only LabVIEW 2009 about (attached a picture).
You can see that on the upper left corner of the picture, there is my custom icon.

Interactive fields and check boxes don't stay in tab order

Hi everyone. I'm creating a census form for my parish which contains questions and check boxes. I've laid out the first section of this form (called Household Member 1), then gone back and added all the text fields / check boxes in the order in which I want the user to be able to tab through the form. When I open the Tab Order dialogue box to make sure the user will be able to tab through the form correctly, all the fields / check boxes are in the correct order. Now I need the exact same sections repeated... Household Member 2, Household Member 3, etc. In total, there will be 7 sections on the form that request the exact same information. So after I get the first section the way I want it, I copy and paste, or drag and duplicate the section with all it's fields onto the next page. However, when I check the Tab Order on this subsequent sections, all of my check boxes have moved to the end of the list, requiring me to have to manually move each check box back into its correct position in the section. This happens every time I duplicate the section... I have to manually put the tabs in their correct order. I tried duplicating the entire page rather than just duplicating the section, and the same thing happens. These fixes are tedious to say the least. Any thoughts about how to fix this would be appreciated.
I'm using CS6 on a Mac with OS 10.8.3

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

Good workflow to avoid white lines and discolored boxes with transperancy?

I'm somewhat new to Illustrator. I have designs in illustrator CS4 that contain objects with drop shadows that are on top of gradient backgrounds. When I save out the artwork as a PDF file I see random faint white lines and discolored boxes around the objects with the drop shadows. When I print proofs of the file on my HP3500 color laser printer I see the white lines and discolored boxes as well. I'm afraid the the lines will show up in production when I send off to the printer. Here's what I'm doing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
(Document Raster Effects Settings: Resolution-High 300ppi/Background: Transperant/Options: preserve spot colors, add 12.7mm around object)
1. Save file as PDF from Illustrator CS4
2. PDF Settings
a. PDF Preset: PDF /xa:2001
b. Advanced Overprint and Transperancy flatener options: Preset-High Resolution
When viewed and printed from Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro there are white stiching lines that are visible.
Do I need to worry about these? Or will they go away when sent to a better printer?

Try "Press Quality" Acrobat 5 compatable setting for "live" transparency. You can also try PDF/X-4 2008 which maintains live transparency and, in CS4, maintain Acrobat 5 compatability. PDF-X1 is a setting that "flattens" transparency which may limit your output options, depending on final output device. Double check your raster settings and make sure it is set for 300ppi/2400dpi and not 72ppi/300dpi. As suggested by Wade, your printer may not be a Postscript Level 3 output device with a RIP. So, the driver may not be screening the artwork properly and the stitching shows up in output. You may benefit from taking the file to a prepress shop and have them output a "contract" proof. If the stitching shows up in the contract proof, then the PDF setup may be the problem or the original file itself.

Deleted messages from in box and sent box do not appear in trash

For years deleted messages from my in box and sent box appeared in the trash where I would hold them for a week or two just in case I had to retrieve a message I had deleted. About 6 months ago deleted messages stopped showing up in the trash. What do I do to get deleted messages to once again appear in the trash? I'm no computer geek... please be gentle with any suggestions. Thank You.

While trying to find a solution, I am discovering my mail problem is much deeper than just messages not appearing in the "Sent" mailbox. I have found some of them appearing in the "Trash" mailbox and some appearing there mulitple times, often with my account name in the "TO" field. I'm also finding some unread mail there that should be in the "Junk" mailbox. So it would appear there are many problems with ISO 7 and mail. I have tried deleting and restablishing the account and two complete iPhone restores. Neither helped. What is the biggest puzzle is that on my second iPhone, the one that upgraded without an error, mail is working perfectly well. Has anyone found a solution to any mail problems on ISO 7 devices? If so, please reply.

My homepage is Google but the logo and search box seems higher on the page than normal...can I adjust the position?

I had to set the settings on Google to Do Not Use Google Instant in their search settings as no cursor was showing on the google search box. After the change it seems that the Google logo and search box seems higher on the Firefox page. I would like to be able to adjust the height of the Google logo/search box. Please tell me if I can make that adjustment.

Thank you for the information about the zoom feature on Firefox. I had found that under the View menu (although I did find it was a temporary fix and the Tools/Options/Font method does change it for a "stick") and changing the font size does increase the size and enlarges or "moves" the logo and search box on Google but that also increases the font size displayed in the search screen. I was hoping to find a way to move the Google logo and search box down on the home page a bit but not change the font size but realize that may be too fine of an adjustment. The zoom feature added to the toolbar via customization may be a good solution for me. Thank you again for your helpfulness.

I looked at your post this morning and did not know enough to respond, other than to find out that links to iListen now go to newer, renamed software. Considering it's been nine hours with no response, I'm suspecting few people here have experience with that software. You could contact the current copmany that used to sell that package and see if they have any archived support info.
BTW: please check you entry for "Mac OS" in your profile. It says iOS, which cannot run on an iMac. iOS is the system for phone and iPads but can't run on Mac computers. Do "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and see what it says about the OS version. Should look like this:

TOC problem; lost Search and Keyword boxes

I inherited a Robohelp X5 project that was originally started
by a person very familiar with these types of programs, then
ultimately messed up by someone who knew nothing about them or the
content. I spent most of my time re-writing and updating the
content using X5, then upgraded to 7 this morning. I have learned
quite a bit about the program, not obviously not enough. I'm sure
these are things I've messed up, because they worked before; but I
don't know what I did or how to fix it...
First, the TOC is built, with books and pages are in the
order I want. The books are linked to a page - presumably, so that
when a user clicks on the book, it defaults a particular page, and
from there they can move to other pages in the section. However,
when I view the results, you have to click on the book, then click
on the individual page to get the page to open.
Next, I have 'lost' the Search boxes for the Index and
Keyword searches. When I look at the skin, they appear there, but
when I view the project, they aren't - the index and keyword lists
appear instead of the boxes.
If anyone can give me some direction on what I need to do,
I'd really appreciate it.

for being suce a novice, and I promise I'll try to learn more about
this program and not bother you guys so much in the future. Right
now I'm just in a bind with needing to get the file posted.
I right-clicked on each of the books, went to Properties, and
confirmed that the Book with Link box is checked, near the bottom
of the window, in the Link to: box is the page that I want the book
to open with. However, when I view the project, that isn't what
happens. For example: I have a Book named Getting Started, under it
are several pages related to initial set up of the software, one of
which is named Getting Started. The Book is linked to the page; but
when I open the project in View, I click on Getting Started and it
expands to show the pages; I have to actually click on the Getting
Started page to open it. Before, whenever I clicked on the Getting
Started Book, the Getting Started Page opened to reveal the
contents of the Book. On the Book Properties window, there isn't
anything in the Available Variables box, and if I go to the
Advanced tab, the Frame reads Default (none) - should the Book or
the Page be designated as a Parent Frame?
With regard to losing the Search and Keywords boxes - I have
an Index full of words; went through yesterday and cleaned it all
up, then generated Webhelp. When I open it to View, the project
opens to the TOC, which is good, but the Search button that usually
appears at the top of the Help screen is not there. Then, when I
click on either the Index or Search tabs, what I see is the
alphabet where the Search box should be, with a list of all of the
index words below. If I open the Skin that was used on the project
and View it, the Search boxes appear there.
I looked at the website that Peter directed me to, but I
don't really see anything there that addresses either of these
issues. Under the Tools menu I did locate an Update DHTML Effects
in Topic; but when I click on it, it returns a message that tells
me that after the conversion the topics cannot be opened by
previous versions of RoboHelp HTML. I've answered No to convert all
of the topics, because I'm not sure that's what I should do.

Is there a KNOWN BUG regarding photos and text box formatting?

I have created an extensive website for my town's Environmental Commission. (www.njnaturenotes.com).
There are numerous pages in which text boxes are formatted with color, borders and shadows, and with photos. However, some of the pages (actually, an increasing number) are showing all the right attributes in iWeb, but NOT on the web (using Safari or any other browser).
I've tried duplicating existing pages that 'work' and making modifications for them to be new pages (new subjects and photos) but in many cases the photos don't show up on the web, nor does most or all of the text box outlines and shadows. Sometimes, even the Hit Counter doesn't show up on the web.
Is this a known bug in iWeb?

I made it a point to view the site from windows machines today, using IE, Firefox and Safari. Spent lots of time making comparisons and looking for details.
With each browser, it fit the page…no horizontal scrolling. So, that wasn't an issue. Perhaps yours is an older computer or has an unusual setting that's causing windows to fit beyond the screen edges horizontally.
The fastest browser was Safari, on both Mac and Windows. Firefox on each platform was somewhat slower and displayed most of the formatting (mostly text box shadows and photo shadows), but less than Safari. IE was by far the slowest on both platforms and had the greatest number of issues with displaying numerous things.
Well, the page is useable in about 5 seconds on a mac and about 7 seconds on a windows machine even though some features continue to load.
I've discussed this with someone who makes his living working on Macs and he did tell me that there are still numerous issues with iWeb that he hopes will be remedied with the next update.
I may have to live with some of the limitations (which are not consistent) until the update is available.

I checked my Windows based Netbook and confirmed the version shows OK for 1.6.0_20.
And just to correct something I said earlier, the Ubuntu Linux JCP does have an About box, under the General tab. Don't quite know how I missed it the 1st time. It shows the version correctly for 1.6.0_14.
