Joining Line Segments

The line looks like it's connected, but it's not. When I apply the brush effect it becomes disjointed. I want it to be one smooth stroke. Is there any way to join the line segments without having to redraw the stroke? I ask this because the line was imported into Illustrator from Flash, there are many more and I don't want to have to redraw them all. Thanks in advance for any help.

Bob,
Hopefully, you can:
1. Deselect the path and then drag across each set of Anchor Points where the brushes go thin;
2. Object>Path>Join.
If you select the lot before 1+2, and look in the Layers palette, or open Window>Document Info, and select Objects in the flyout menu, you should be able to see that there are multiple paths; the latter shows the number of points in each selected object.
If 1 + 2 do (or should it be does) not work, there are probably multiple Anchor Points at the end(s) of either/both of the paths to be joined; the surplus should be deleted.
Or the paths may be grouped, and should be ungrouped first; that may also be seen in the Layers palette/Document info.

  • Joining Line Segments in CS6

I am drawing a simple diamond shape made with one rectanlge shape and multiple line segments.  As I drew the design, I made sure to connect all the segments at the anchors.  When I select all of the segments and try to join the paths, the end points or corners are not smooth.  In other words, some of the line segment ends hang over the edges...  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks!
The image below shows the left side of the diamond, where the top portion meets the bottom...

Thank you, DayForce.  Changing the corner type to "round join" did the trick!  May I ask another question?  When I select all the segments and join the paths, I get an additional line segment from one point to another.  How can I elminiate this?

  • Join Line Segments (road segments) SDO_AGGR_UNION/SDO_AGGR_CONCAT_LINES

    Hi,
I have road segments I need to join/merge in order to get the complete road axe. Unfortunately I have some segements which are not joined and the resulting road axe has a gap.
When I look at the road segements and the join result it seems to me that aggregation does not work for roads which either have segements which are disjoint (we have a few roads where single segments do not touch) or if a road has two or more "branches" (just take the letter "Y" as example for it).
    (1) SDO_AGGR_CONCAT_LINES
Didn't work at all - I could not create a view using SDO_AGGR_CONCAT_LINES. As the documention mentions - not suitable if you have arcs (we have).
    (2) SDO_AGGR_UNION
I tried SDO_AGGR_UNION as well although the documentation mentions - "Do not use SDO_AGGR_UNION to merge line string or multiline string geometries; instead, use the SDO_AGGR_CONCAT_LINES spatial aggregate function."
    (3) SDO_AGGR_SET_UNION
I tried SDO_AGGR_SET_UNION as well. It sounded promising as the documentation doesn't mention anything related to arcs but says: "Can aggregate sets of lines..."
2 and 3 give the same result. Please have a look at the screenshot (mh, looks like I can't upload a picture...)
I would like to aggregate the segements - is there another function in Oracle I could use?
Any idea, whether SDO_AGGR_UNION / SDO_AGGR_SET_UNION are / are not suitable for my dataset?
    Many thanks, Rob

after some further tests I found out that the cause of the issue seems to be the application I used for viewing my road network.
I displayed the view in SQLDeveloper and with FME and both look fine - result is expected (for view 2 and 3). But initially I used a different package for checking the view visually.
Yes, that can happen sometimes. Currently I've been working with one of the biggest GIS-applications out there, and I have noticed that especially when zooming in or out rapidly gaps appear between lines (when I know for certain that there are no gaps - because I checked). It's weird that, but it can trick you into believing things are not right.

    - I need the roads not road segements when displaying the data in our GIS system, most users want a road not single segements
    - performance : will see, if it's not good I will create a mat. view, road network is quite static and doesn't change often
    - gaps : there are no gaps in our data set (but "gaps" appeared when I displayed the view in one specific software package).
    - sdo_aggr_union / sdo_aggr_set_union seem to do what I want and seem to work with our data as well
Roads do make more sense to users - that is true. If you also need segments, maybe the LRS stuff can help you there: create the necessary segments on the fly when needed? On the other hand you are right, road networks tend to stay the same for a long time, and if the do change you usually have plenty of notification so an MV might be best (also depends on the number of users and the type of users I suppose).
Glad it's working for you now!

  • AutoCAD drawings INTO Illustrator / How can I join line segments?

    Good day;

~ want to manipulate imagery in Illustrator
~ all drawings are importing as individual lines / shape....a simple rectangle is four separate lines
~ is there an efficient way to "OPEN' or to "IMPORT" these complex drawings and have the CAD lines unite as closed shapes?!
~ isolating each shape / selecting nodes / 'joining' / is just NOT the best way to kill my day

    S.O.S.!!
    Thank you in advance,

    Laura,
Here is a thread for FrameMaker users that has some data you might find useful in doing what you want: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/316489
I have to handle this headache on occasion with MicroStation DGN files and I don't know of any plug-ins that will do this for either DWG or DGN. I try to get an EPS export from the CAD program first, if that export option is available, and bring it into Adobe Illustrator. This should be a standard for any CAD software. The next thing I try is PDF export and bring that into AI. If that doesn't work...
Your next problem is that version 5 of Illustrator is 17 years old! I'm sorry to inform you but that could be the problem you face, your software and computer are too old and that version of Illustrator isn't sophisticated enough to handle what you want to handle. You may have no option but to get a newer Mac or Windows computer and get a newer version of AI, at least!
I run Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 5150 and AI CS4 at work and I can barely get by at home with a 4 year old Mac Mini running Mac OS X 10.5 and AI CS2. That should give you a baseline to work from.
I hope this last hasn't upset you too much.

  • How to join multiple line segments to make a fillable polygon

    Howdy,
I have illustrator CS2 12.0.1. Is there any easy way to create an irregular shaped fillable polygon? The way I currently do this is (1) I use the line segment tool to draw the sides of the polygon, (2) then for each corner of the polygon, I use the direction selection tool to select the corner, then do command-J to "join" the two segments that touch that corner. Only after doing that, I am finally able to use the eyedropper tool to fill the polygon.
This take a lot of tedious effort. I have LOTS of polygons to draw. Once I have drawn the segments, it seems like I should just be able to select all the segments and have an option that does all the joins at once.
Or, maybe instead of the line segment tool I could use some path tool. But whenever I have tried that, I end up with curved segments instead of straight ones.
Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Thanks for any help,
    Frank B

Basically I am drawing on top of a bitmapped background which is a satellite map. My polygons are essentially the property lots on this map. So I visually see where the corners are, and I want to make a polygon that I can fill. I actually will fill with a few different translucent colors to indicate different types of lots. This all works fine except that my current means of drawing the polygons is tedious, and it seems like there should be a better way.
Another way I could solve my problem is if I were able to reshape an existing polygon by dragging its corners to where I wanted them to be. I have not figured out how to do that. Either the entire polygon moves when I drag a corner, or the polygon gets reshaped by the drag in a way I don't want (what I want is to move one corner, and what I get instead seems like one corner stays put and the other three move around to keep constant skewishness; or something).

  • Ensuring Line Segments Join

Hi, I am creating a graphic using line segments which need to be at right angles to each other. When I draw these two line segments how can I make sure that there is no excess bit protruding over the other side but that it is long enough so that there isn't a small gap between them?
    I am using Illustrator CS2.
    Thanks,
    Josh

You should be able to use the align tools. I think CS2 does not have them in the tool bar, but are availble in the windows menu. Select both lines then select again on the line that is correct, then click on the align left or right to get your 90 degree angle.
    Hope this helps

  • Combining Line Segments into a single shape

I drew one half of a shape by drawing multiple line segments using the arc tool. Think of the shape as sort of a C. Once I had the shape the way I wanted it, I copied and reflected it to give me the other half, so now it looks sort of like an O. However, when I go to fill the shape, I get all sort of weird fills, like it is trying to close each of the individual arcs that I drew.
I have spent over an hour going through Illustrators help and searching the internet, but I can't figure out how to join all these line segments into a single shape that I can then apply a fill to. I'm sure this is easy, but I'm frustrated.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Thanks Kurt. That did it. My gosh, I would never have thought of looking for something like that. I upgrade to CS3 sometime ago, but hadn't used illustrator much since I upgraded.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Fillable object from line segments

I've created a tree object from line segments and it looks how I want it to look. I made it a compound path. When I fill it, I get weird results. I used live fill and that works fine, but I still dont get the pointed edges that I would like to see on the outline and I feel like there is a more elegant way to go about this. I have attached the image of the tree. The blue circle is the weird fill. The red circle is the pointed edges that I want. I got this point using the pen tool, but it doesn't act correctly with the rest of the path.
I am probably doing this all completely wrong,  but I'm a bit impatient for classes and I learn best through trial and  error.

Select your object and in your stroke panel increase the miter limit to a higher number
The weird gren or blue fill is probably because your points are not joined. Use the hollow arrow tool to select a point and move it you will see. You can fix by using the hollow arrow tool to select only the 2 points, then using object >> path >> join

  • Line segment and Clipping Mask help

    Hi,
I have created a complex shape using just line segments. I want to be able to create a clipping mask using a .jpg photo as the texture inside the shape I have created. I have tried Grouping the path, and also making it a Compound Path, but the most that happens is the line segments themselves get filled in, NOT the inside of the shape I would like filled.
I have went through and made sure every segment is attached, but to no avail.
    Any help please?
    Thanks.

In CS5 you can select all you lines and then hit Command J and all but last two points will join you then select those two points and do Command J once again but if you wish to have  your original art intact then just make a copy lock it and make not visib le until you need it.
    Now make your clippping mask

  • How do you connect two line segments in illustrator cs6?

I have been using adobe cs5 for a few years.  If I wanted to connect the corners of two line segments, you would select the first line segment with the select tool, then switch to the direct selection tool, and drag the anchor point to the other line segment anchor point till the cursor arrow went white (signifying the other anchor point being recognized).  Then you would choose "join" and it would give a nice right angle connecting the two line segments.
With adobe cs6, the direct selection tool doesn't change to white when you go over the other line segment anchor point.  Why is this?
(Unfortunately my screen capture doesn't show the black arrowhead that you see when you are dragging with the direct selection tool to the other line segment.)
I have also attached a youtube video link that shows what how this recognition of anchor points looks in adobe illustrator cs5, and this was exactly what I used to do when I was performing the task shown in my screen capture but with adobe illustrator cs5.  Thanks and sorry for the essay!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InwcicWQHL0
Anybody have any idea how to remedy the lack of anchor point recognition?

    You are welcome, zinders.
Just a comment: you seem to use Butt Cap, so you can really see when line segments are not joined.

  • IF Statement in Join Line

Is it possible to use a IF statement (i.e. CASE, DECODE) in the Join Line?
I need create a query that depending on the value of a column it will determine if I use a column A or column B in my join statement. I was thinking something like the following:
    Select a.Value1, a.Value2, b.ColumnA, b.ColumnB
    FROM Table1 a
    INNER JOIN Table2 b ON a.Value2 = (if b.ColumnZ='Dept' then b.ColumnA else b.ColumnB END)
    Oracle Version 10g
    OS Windows XP
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Remember what a CASE expression does: it returns a single value in one of the SQL data types (such as VARCHAR2, NUMBER or DATE).
Each THEN (or ELSE) clause of a CASE expression references something that the CASE expression might return, so after each THEN (or ELSE) keyword there must be a single value in one of the SQL data types.
    So you can't say:
    case tdsi.level_code
         when  'L'  then  tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.location_code
         when  'R'  then  tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.region_code
         when  'C'  then  tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.country_code
endWhat is the data type being returned? "tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.location_code" is not a single value in any of the SQL data types.
If location_code, region_code, country_code and privilege_code all have the same data type, then you can do something like this:
join      dirpipe.dirpipe_location_map      tdlm      on      case tdsi.level_code
                                            when 'L' then tdlm.location_code
                                            when 'R' then tdlm.region_code
                                            when 'C' then tdlm.country_code
                                       end     = tdsid.privilege_code

  • Line Segment Tool Options won't allow negative angle

When you select an object and hit Return to bring up the Move dialog, Illustrator allows you to enter a negative rotation amount in the Angle field (e.g., -30°). This is great. However, when you select the Line Segment tool and click in the drawing area to bring up the Line Segment Tool Options dialog, the same Angle field will only accept positive numbers. Entering a negative value will cause the Angle to be zero. This is sloppy work and so easily fixed. Please change it so you can enter negative numbers in the Line Segment Tool Options dialog like you can in the Move dialog. Also, there should be a preview checkbox in the Line Segment Tool Options.

  • 3d graph line segment

    Hi:
I'm trying to find a way to draw a series of x,y,z points to a 3d graph with each point linked to the last with a line segment.  I have been successfull in plotting a series of points to the 3d graph indicator in LabView but I cannot figure out how to connect them with line segments ... does anyone know how this might be done?  Thanks in advance for any help.

When the cwlinepoint property is activated the graph draws a line from each point to each point which is not what I'm trying to do ... the code I have written is extremely basic ... three 1d arrays each containing number set (one array with x coordinates, one array with y coords, ect.) these are then passed to the CWGraph3D invoke node ... then the points are plotted to the 3d graph as just points ... which is somewhat usable for what I am trying to do but I was surprised to find out that such a functionality was not already built in to LabView.  I thought that there would have been a relatively easy way to do it but I have not been able to find it on my own, so I thought I would put it out there and see if others had already figured it out.  My search of the forum yeilded nothing.  Again your help is greatly appreciated unclebump!!!  Find attached code.  Was written in Labview 7.1 but should be usable in 7.0 I think.

The two lines you've provided intersect at a single point, which is by definition not a line.
If you want to return a line, then the intersection has to happen along some length of the line.

Your user_sdo_geom_metadata should include the srid value stored in the geometries.
The bounds of your user_sdo_geom_metadata should be a bit larger to encompass
