JPanel KeyListener not getting TAB ???

Question

i have a keylistener on a jpanel.
im outputting the keycodes and every key
works except for TAB.
im thinking maybe the jpanel has someother
listener (default eventlistener) that is stealing
the tab event?
is that it? if so, or otherwise, how can i get
the tab to be recognized.
im monitoring the keys with
     System.out.println("Char: " + c);
     System.out.println("Code: " + kc);
     System.out.println("Modifier: " + m);
     System.out.println("Action: " + e.isActionKey());and like i said, every key works except for TAB.
any ideas anyone?

thanks. i tried to remove the default focus listener
with te following code (one focus listener shows up)
but the tab key press still isnt getting registered. any ideas?
FocusListener[] fls = this.getFocusListeners();
for(int i = 0; i < fls.length; i++){
System.out.println("FL #" + i);
this.removeFocusListener(fls);
