JPanels which fail isLightweightComponent

I have a class A which extends JPanel, and another class B which also extends JPanel. A will typically contain a number of instances of B as child components.
What I'm trying to do is render the contents of A by calling it's paint method with my own graphics context, so that I can then save the image. However, A will get painted, but none of the B's will - isLightweightComponent returns false, so paintChildren doesn't call their paint method. However, when I add A to the content pane of an applet (JApplet - I'm only using Swing), isLightweightComponent returns true, and the contents appear onscreen.
How can a JPanel be lightweight in a JApplet but not otherwise (I thought JPanels were by definition lightweight)? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I don't remember why this is exactly, the lightweight heavyweight thing is pretty weird. I think the problem you were having is basically that JPanel's are not made to be top level components, so when you had the JPanel outside of the JApplet it was trying to fill a roll that was beyond it's abilities. By adding the JPanel to the JFrame the JFrame knew how to be the top level component and made the proper calls to paint.
Cheers,
Andrew

  • How to Serialize a JPanel which is inside a JApplet

    Hi..
    I have a JApplet where i have a JPanel which contains some JLabels and JTextFields,now i have to Serialize that full Panel so that i can retrived it later on with the labels and textfields placed in the same order,for that i tried serializing the full panel on to a file but it is giving me NotSerializeException,i dont know how to tackel it..
    public SaveTemplate(JPanel com) {
    try {
    ObjectOutputStream os=new ObjectOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("Temp1.temp"));
    os.writeObject(com);
    catch(Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    This is the code..plz help me with that..

    Actually its forming a Template which client will generate and that has to saved on the serverside..So what i thought that once when the client has designed a template,i can save the full template which is a panel into a file and later on when he want to open the template i just have to read the file and create an object of JPanel and add to the frame,so i dont need to apply much effort for that...But now serialization in Applet is giving problem.

  • Cannot get rid of mail message which failed to send

    I am "stuck" with a MAIL message which failed to send and has returned: "cannot send message using the server smtp.gmail.com:...... ".
    I cannot delete it since the "delete" radio button on the message in inactive, it's not in the outbox or in "drafts".
    It's sitting there and even if MAIL is closed and relaunched or if the system is restarted it appears again.

    There are five messages in my Outbox.mbox>Messages folder (suffix .emix) all dated today. Only one of them is from my .mac account, the rest from Verizon email accounts. When I sent the .mac email, it seemed to be sent, but a copy did not end up in my sent folder as it usually does, yet the others all did. I’ve closed and reopened Apple Mail as well as restarted my system (iMac) and they are still there. Why are those 5 emails in the Outbox.mbox>Messages folder? Nothing shows up in the “Outbox” in my Mail sidebar. And if they have not been sent, how do I send them?

  • Xmobar-0.15 depends on transformers-0.2.2.0 which failed to install.

    Hi,
    After upgrading ghc and cabal-install several weeks ago, which unregistered xmonad, xmonad-contrib, and xmobar from ghc-pkg, I'm now finally reinstalling all of them to get back up to date.
    xmonad-0.10 and xmonad-contrib-0.10 went just fine, but xmobar-0.15 (even with the most minimal flags) is giving me the following error:
    [ 8 of 21] Compiling Control.Monad.Trans.Error ( Control/Monad/Trans/Error.hs, dist/build/Control/Monad/Trans/Error.o )
    Control/Monad/Trans/Error.hs:55:21: Not in scope: `catch'
    Failed to install transformers-0.2.2.0
    cabal: Error: some packages failed to install:
    mtl-2.0.1.0 depends on transformers-0.2.2.0 which failed to install.
    parsec-3.1.3 depends on transformers-0.2.2.0 which failed to install.
    transformers-0.2.2.0 failed during the building phase. The exception was:
    ExitFailure 1
    xmobar-0.15 depends on transformers-0.2.2.0 which failed to install.
    Note that I have transformers-0.3.0.0 installed as a dependency of mtl-2.1.2, which is itself a dependency (-any) of xmonad and (>=1 && <3) of xmonad-contrib. So yeah, xmonad-contrib-0.15 won't compile.
    I've also tried cloning the latest xmonad-contrib-0.16 from git. That one does compile, but it has the known upstream issue of not acknowledging avoidStruts (see here and here).
    Anyone have any idea how to get around the transformers dependency problem? Thanks.
    Brian
    Edit: Here are the relevant dependencies:
    xmonad: mtl -any
    xmonad-contrib: mtl >=1 && <3
    xmobar: mtl ==2.0.*
    mtl-2.1.2: transformers ==0.3.*
    mtl-2.0.1.0: transformers ==0.2.*
    So the culprit is clearly transformers-0.2.*., which is required by mtl-2.0.*, which is required by xmobar. Unfortunately, I've tried compiling all versions of transformers-0.2.*, and I get the same error every time:
    [ 8 of 21] Compiling Control.Monad.Trans.Error ( Control/Monad/Trans/Error.hs, dist/build/Control/Monad/Trans/Error.o )
    Control/Monad/Trans/Error.hs:55:21: Not in scope: `catch'
    Failed to install transformers-0.2.2.0
    cabal: Error: some packages failed to install:
    transformers-0.2.2.0 failed during the building phase. The exception was:
    ExitFailure 1
    I guess this is more a problem with transformers than with xmobar...

    If any other xmonad users who also use cabal-install have managed to get this working, I'd be grateful to know how.
    In the meantime, I've just switched over to using xmonad, xmonad-contrib, and xmobar from community. (For now, only xmobar-0.15, not 0.16, works properly. You can find it at the Arch Rollback Machine: x86_64 / i686.)
    The only thing that doesn't work in the community versions of xmobar is the MPD command. I guess it's not compiled with with_mpd, for some reason.
    It's a shame because, other than being able to compile xmobar with all and only the flags I want, the primary reason I switched from the Arch repos to cabal-install was to avoid dependency issues. At least now everything is in community.

    Since installing Mavericks, my screen periodically becomes pixelated, forcing me to reboot to resolve the problem.  I've tried reinstalling Mavericks which failed to resolve the problem.  Any suggestions?

    You may have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.

    What you can do to use it is download gfxstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel.

  • JScrollPane (added to a JPanel, which paints) is visible but does nothing

    Hi. I am writing a program that reads data from files and does paiting using the info. The top level window is a JFrame, which is divided into two parts - A Box which contains the buttons through which the user interacts and a JPanel on which the painting is done. I have added the JPanel to a JScrollPane, but have run into problems there. The JScrollPane is visible (both policies always visible) but it does nothing. I understand that when the drawing is fitting, the ScrollPane is not used. But even if I make the window small or draw something that is not visible in the normal are, the JScrollPane doesn't work. In fact, no knob is visible on either of the two scrollbars. I am pasting the relevant code below:
    //import
    public class MainWindow extends JFrame {
        public static void Main(String[] args) {
            new MainWindow();
        //Declare all the variables here.
        private Box buttionBox;
        private JScrollPane scroller;
        private HelloPanel drawingPanel;
        //other variables
        //The constructor for the class MainWindow.
        public MainWindow() {
           initComponents();
            this.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
            this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(900,670));
            //buttonBox containts the buttons - not very relevant to this problem.
            this.getContentPane().add(buttonBox, BorderLayout.WEST);
            //scroller is the JScrollPane
            this.getContentPane().add(scroller, BorderLayout.CENTER);
            this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            this.setTitle("My Title");
            this.setVisible(true);
            this.pack();
        public void initComponents() {
            buttonBox = Box.createVerticalBox();
            //instantiate the buttons here and add them to the ButtonBox.
            //The event listeners instantiated. Not relevant.
            //The various components are assigned their appropriate event listeners here.
             //Not relevant.
    //Now adding all the buttons to the box with proper spacing.
            buttonBox.add(Box.createVerticalStrut(20));
            //This is the drawing panel on which the drawing will be done.
            drawingPanel = new HelloPanel();
            scroller = new JScrollPane(drawingPanel);
                    scroller.setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS);
            scroller.setHorizontalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS);
            scroller.getHorizontalScrollBar().setUnitIncrement(10);
            scroller.getVerticalScrollBar().setUnitIncrement(10);
        //This inner class is used to define and implement the event listener for handling the checkboxes.
        private class checkBoxListener implements ItemListener{
            public void itemStateChanged(ItemEvent e){
                 drawingPanel.repaint();

        //This private class is used to define and implement the event listener for the buttons.

            //Do this when the button which has an instance of this class as its listener is clicked.
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                if (e.getSource() == saveStructureButton){
                  //Implement action. Irrelvant.
        //The panel on which the drawings are done.
        private class HelloPanel extends JPanel {
            //This JPanel is used for drawing the image (for the purpose of saving to disk).
            JComponent c;    //For image. Irrelevant.
            public HelloPanel(){
                c = this;   //This is necessary for drawing the image to be saved to disk.

            //This is the method that actually paints all the drawings whenever a.
            //The shapes theselves can be defined somewhere else, but that paint method must be invoked from here.
            public void paintComponent(Graphics g){

                Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D) g;
                g2.fill(new Rectangle2D.Double(40,40,100,100));    //Just for this post.
                g2.drawString("Text", 750, 750);    //To test the scrollpane.
    } I hope this helps you get an idea of what I am trying to do and what the problem might be. Any help would be really appreciated. I have spent hours on this and I have no idea why it doesn't work.
    The actual code is much bigger, so if you need any extra information, please tell me.

    HelloPanel should provide a "public Dimension getPreferredSize()" method.
    With your code you create a simple JPanel and want to draw outside of it, but you never tell the JScrollPane that your HelloPanel is actually bigger than it seems, that's why it does not feel the need to add scroll bars.
    Here's the working code:
    //import
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class MainWindow extends JFrame {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            new MainWindow();
        //Declare all the variables here.
        private Box buttionBox;
        private JScrollPane scroller;
        private HelloPanel drawingPanel;
        //other variables
        //The constructor for the class MainWindow.
        public MainWindow() {
           initComponents();
            this.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
            this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(900,670));
            //buttonBox containts the buttons - not very relevant to this problem.
            //this.getContentPane().add(buttonBox, BorderLayout.WEST);
            //scroller is the JScrollPane
            this.getContentPane().add(scroller, BorderLayout.CENTER);
            this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            this.setTitle("My Title");
            this.setVisible(true);
            this.pack();
        public void initComponents() {
            //buttonBox = Box.createVerticalBox();
            //instantiate the buttons here and add them to the ButtonBox.
            //The event listeners instantiated. Not relevant.
            //The various components are assigned their appropriate event listeners here.
             //Not relevant.
    //Now adding all the buttons to the box with proper spacing.

            scroller = new JScrollPane(drawingPanel);
                    scroller.setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS);
            scroller.setHorizontalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS);

  • JPanel which uses reflection to create a simple property editor

    Hi everyone,
    Here's what I'd like: a custom JPanel, let's call it DesiredJPanel, which can be passed an object as an argument, and which then detects all the public getters and setters on that object, and then creates a simple property editor, with default behavior for numbers, booleans, Strings, etc. It might be used like this:
    JDialog dialog = new JDialog(new DesiredJPanel(someObjectWithSettersAndGetters)));
    dialog.setVisible(true);
    Then we'd get a dialog populated with the current values of all relevant properties. The panel could have a button bar, with an ok button. When you press it, all the properties of someObjectWithSettersAndGetters are set according to what the user has entered in the fields of the panel.
    This seems like a pervasive, standard use case. It also seems like javabeans is intended for this. E.g. quoting wikipedia: "JavaBeans are reusable software components for Java that can be manipulated visually in a builder tool." Moreover, there is the java.beans.PropertyEditor interface.
    And yet I can't find anything that seems to do this, so I end up writing the same boilerplate style code over and over. I found some commercial thing (this is for an open source project), and netbeans does what I'm after but it's netbeans. I want something that can be used in any swing app.
    Apologies if I've overlooked something obvious or posted this to the wrong forum (if either, please let me know!).
    All best and happy new year!
    - Jeff

    Not exactly what you asked for, but reasonably close. You can use my [Bean Table Model|http://www.camick.com/java/blog.html?name=bean-table-model] to create a JTable which will display all the properties in a single row of a table. The appropriate renderer/editor is used for each property.
    Play with the commented out code in JButtonTableModel class to see what you get for your particular bean.

  • I have Firefox for U3 and lately it keeps trying to instal an update, which fails and a 2nd window tells me another copy of F'fox is running (which isn't) and when I close the window F'fox starts anyway, but all this takes a lot of time.

    I have Firefox for U3 on my Verbatim stick to run on whatever computer I happen to be using. Lately every time I try to open F'fox a window comes up saying "Firefox is installing your updates and will start in a few moments." The status bar indicates the update is progressing, 'though a bit slowly, then suddenly it's done and the window disappears, only to be followed by another window coming up which says "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on you computer and then re-start Firefox to try again."
    If I press the 'OK' button OR press the Close button, the window disappears, but then F'fox starts up all by itself anyway.
    How can I stop this updating problem happening every time and on every computer I use.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
    *Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.
    Try to toggle some Boolean gfx.font_rendering prefs on the about:config page to disable some features.
    Filter: gfx
    Some to try:
    * set gfx.direct2d.disabled to true to disable Direct2D
    * set gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.use_gdi_table_loading to false.
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    *Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    *Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
    *Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • How to change a password for an OpenLDAP user, which fails when using Lion's System Preferences?

    The Problem
    Users are unable to change their password using System Preferences -> Users & Groups on a Mac that is connected to an LDAP server (specifically, OpenLDAP).
    This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com).
    (a bug report for this issue has been filed with Apple and can be seen on OpenRader @http://openradar.appspot.com/11768796)
    Steps to Reproduce:
    Try to change the password using the System Preferences -> Users & Groups prefpane on Lion. It fails with the following error message:
    The password for the account “bobsmith” was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.
    Expected Results:
    The password should be changed.
    Actual Results:
    The error appears, and on the LDAP server, an error like the following is logged:
    Jun 28 08:42:21 ldap3 slapd[7810]: conn=10518785 op=2 RESULT oid= err=21 text=Invalid DN
    This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com)
    Notes: This was encountered by someone else over at the AFP548.com forums who ended up patching their LDAP server to resolve the issue. This shouldn't require patching LDAP to resolve, however. Lion needs to (at least have an option to) send the full DN of a user requesting to change their password, not the short username:
    Text from above forum link (in case it is taken down):
    So, I’ve got this OpenLDAP server with network home directories at home that all of my Mac machines authenticate to. Everybody can bounce around to whatever Mac is available. It works great.
    Anyway, with Snow Leopard, I was able to change user passwords via System Preferences. However, that got broken when I upgraded to Lion (amongst other things). Both Snow Leopard and Lion send exop’s to the ldap server, but for whatever reason, the id is screwed up in Lion (or at least, it’s screwed up on the two machines at home I tested this with). Instead of sending the user’s DN, e.g. “uid=user,cn=users,ou=something,dc=somewhere,dc=com”, the ldap server is only sent the uid, e.g. “user”. The ldap server is expecting a DN here, so naturally, it fails with the error “Invalid DN”.
    Bummer.
    So, to work around that, I had to patch OpenLDAP (version 2.4.26 in this case). Now, when my server can’t resolve the id it’s given during a password change, it will look at the bind DN, and if the id string is contained within the bind DN string, it will just use the bind DN as the entry to change. I figured this would still allow me to manually specify password changes via an admin account while still giving users the ability to change their own passwords without having to point them at a webpage (lame).
    I should point out that all my accounts have the uid as part of the DN… I guess if you were doing some kind of crazy SASL mappings, this might not work for you…
    Anyway, here’s the patch in case anyone else is interested… If it works for you, great. If not, oh well.

    I tried to change my password with dscl too, like so:

  • I get the flashing question mark on my G5/10.5 system. When I booted up on the install disc and ran first aid which failed and stated "Volume check failed Error -9972 Vol 1 could not be repaired. What to do next? Do I try the hardware diags first?

    I've never had to reload the original software and would like to avoid it unless absolutely necessary. Anyway any comments on what i should do next?

    HW Diags aren't likely to help.

    You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

  • Having problems with shut-down of server after I open a socket connection (which fails to connect)

    Basically here is an example servlet - new iPlanet 4.1sp9 instance with an empty classpath (apart from the servlet class) - running solaris v5.6 (Generic_111446-02)
    If you run the servlet and then try to shut-down iPlanet it hangs. If you remove the 'new Socket(...' line then it's fine. Any ideas why a failed socket connection stops the server restarting? (Connecting to a listening port does not exhibit this behavior).

    Rob:
    it's due to JVM signal handler that catches the stop signal and you're forced to use a kill -9 -
    Note that the stop script of a fresh install of iWS 4.1SP9 should contain the kill -9 - as a workaround for this known JVM issue.
