Jpegs and rotated EXIF hell

I have Googled this and all I can find are messages going back to 2005 and referring to Tools that no longer run on Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.6).
If you look at this JPG <http://www.peterforkes.com/_images/Family/Birth/CharlotteFannyForks1880birth.jpg> it is seen as if it is rotated  through 90 degrees clockwise.
If you download this same file and view it on (in my case) my Mac then the same JPG file appears in landscape view i.e. rotated anti-clockwise by 90 degrees!
Is there a tool that will do the following?
1) Run on a modern version of OS X.
2) Will let me view the JPG file EXACTLY as it would appear IF it was on the Web.
3) Will let me edit the EXIF setting AND then let me see the JPG with the same rotation as it will have when posted to the Web.
If the only tool is that nightmare of HELL called Photoshop, please don't tell me (I'd really rather not know).
Thanks,
Peter

I found a small program called Xee that does what you ask. It's free and works great (lossless rotation etc.).
I immediately changed my preferences so it would replace Preview.

  • Exif tool and Export Jpeg and Tiff files

I run Lightroom 4.4 under Apple OS X10.4.4
When I export files Exif Tool (in Graphic Converter) under ICC header shows for Jpeg "Primary Platform = Microsoft and for = Tiff Apple; and under ICC Profile Color profile for Jpeg = HP but Adobe 1998 for Tiff.  I can see that there is a difference between the profile for Jpeg and Tiff (eg sRgb and Adobe1998) but don't follow why the Primary platform differs and shows Microsoft for Jpeg and that the jpeg profile is HP.  Can anyone explain, please, and dose it matter anyway?   Thanks  Clive

A overview of ICC profile tags is here: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/ICC_Profile.html
Why the difference in the PrimaryPlatform tag, I don't know, it does not matter.
The ProfileCopyright tag is HP for sRGB, Kodak for ProPhotoRGB and Adobe for AbobeRGB (1998) of course.

  • JPEG Export = Save EXIF Infos as part of the image

Is there a way to export jpegs with some exif info (creation date and tile) which should be saved directly on the image. Like the showing of the timestamp on the picture  which can be turned on on some cameras.
Reasoin is: I want to use those pics on a digital image frame and I want to show some image data as well. As there are no options in the software of the digiframe to display exifs I have to integrate them in the pictures...
if it is not possible with lightroom then probably you can tell me another way (bridge, photoshop, ...) - just not manually...
    thanks

You can do a text overlay in the print Module and then print to JPG file.
Text overlay is done in  the "Photo Info" panel.
Print to JPG is done by selecting JPGf file under "Print to:"
For details read up in the Help menu.

  • Jpeg lossless rotation in organizer?

Currently using PSE 4, but moving up to 7 soon.  I've read in previous threads that within the Organizer jpeg rotation is lossless, however I've observed that after doing an initial set of rotations there is a decrease in file size*; subsequent rotations however, do not change the file size. Does anyone have an explanation for this observation, and is the rotation not lossless afterall?  (*For purposes of viewing vertically oriented images correctly in Windows XP and Vista, I've found that I need to rotate the images horizontally and then back vertically, otherwise they remain oriented horizontally when viewed outside Elements.  This is problematic when burning images on CD/DVD to share with others.)  Thanks.
    Ethan

Also, I looked in Edit>Preferences>Files, as well as elsewhere in PSE4, and found no information or option for rotation using orientation metadata.
I no longer have PSE 4 installed. But the options may be called Edit > Preferences > Files >Fast JPEG Rotation and Fast TIFF Rotation -- ignore any description you may find in the PSE 4 User Guide, since based on what I see in the PSE 5 Guide, it's completely garbled.  (The names of the options and their descriptions got fixed by PSE 7.)
In PSE7, if the option were unchecked, I'm assuming all vertically oriented images would come in horizontally, and thus require rotation anyway.  If this is so, I'm not sure what's gained by unchecking the option?
When you take a vertically oriented photo with many newer cameras, the camera records the actual JPEG image horitontally oriented, and it records in the file's metadata the following setting:
    Orientation: Rotate 90 CW
In general, when you import a photo into PSE 7, it always obeys the setting of the Orientation field, regardless of the setting of Rotate JPEGs Using Orientation Metadata. So when you import that vertically oriented image into PSE 7, it will come in correctly oriented, vertically.
If you then export that photo and view it in a non-conforming application, the photo will appear horizontally oriented, because that's how the actual image is recorded in the file and because the application ignores the Orientation field.
If you uncheck the option and then rotate counter-clockwise, PSE changes the orientation field to:
    Orientation: Horizontal (normal)
and it leaves the actual JPEG image untouched, since it is already horitontally oriented.  If you then rotate clockwise, PSE leaves the orientation field as:
    Orientation: Horizontal (normal)
and it rotates the actual JPEG image to vertical orientation.  When you export that version to non-conforming applications, they will see the image vertically oriented.
When experimenting with this, be aware that at least some downloaders (e.g. the Windows Live Photo Gallery downloader) will read the Orientation field in a photo and rotate the actual JPEG image accordingly (depending on the options you've set).  They do this precisely because not all apps conform to the industry standard for the Orientation field.

    jpg does not support Layers.
Just to make sure, what exactly do you mean by "stacking photos" and what do you want to achieve thereby?

  • Using IOS 7.1.2 on Safari when I leave the focus on a input on my webpage and rotate my device from Horizontal to vertical, I see a black space on the right and the page is not displayed properly. Any solutions to this problem?

16bit? Pixels extending beyond the canvas? (from a crop with delete unused pixels turn off).  Have you previously been saving PSD files?
IME you sometimes have to tell Photoshop that the first save of a session is JPG, and it remembers from there on.  The way to 'tell' Photoshop that JPG, or PDF, or PNG etc are now your preferred format is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on that format in the Save As drop down list.  So long as the file does not have parameters that your chosen format does not support, then this should work for you.
[EDIT]  Just noticed that you did include 'Crop' in the subject line.  Do you have 'Delete cropped pixels' checked?

  • Is there a way to save an image file as a jpeg and add -web or -print to the file name?

I am trying to find a way to save my image file as a jpeg and add -web or -print to the existing file name.  This way I can easily see which files are lower resolution for web posting or high resolution for printing.

    Jason,
I helped somebody do a very similar thing about a week ago.
The trick is to use the Batch command's ability to construct a file name.
Tell the batch to append, e.g. "-x" without quotes, to the name of each saved file.
The batch runs an Action which does a save as JPEG, resize image, add logo, save as JPEG, then close document.
    The output is "<document name>-x.jpg" and "<document name>-x-x.jpeg".
Then use Windows Explorer to rename "*-x-x.jpg" to "*-print.jpg".
    Then rename "*-x.jpg" to "*-web.jpg".
    See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1038992?start=32
The name construction that I used there was just an "x" appended to the document name. Use whatever you like. Also juliew subsequently referred to the method as a "double-batch" run, although it is not. One run of the batch will output two JPEGs for each input document.
I hope the disagreements in that thread don't cause too much disruption.
If you want, the Batch command itself can be recorded in another Action which would store the parameters of the batch, then you could run that Action anytime without having to set up the details of the batch each time. It would always output to one specific folder, though.

  • When I try to import pictures from media card to iPhoto, I'm getting the error 'The following file could not be imported. The file is in an unrecognized format.'  The file is a jpeg and I've never had this problem before.

    What version of iPhoto?
What colour profile is the shot?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How separate and rotate pieces of an object in preparation for creation of a GIF in After Affects?

Here is the image that I'm working with...
I want to make this object rotate a tight 90 degrees in After Effects and then separate. If you're wondering why I put this up under Photoshop it is because I need to have this model in addition to 2 others, one of the top half and one of the bottom half and button, both turned 90 degrees [preferably clockwise] in order to create the GIF. I need these 3 pieces before I can even consider creating the GIF in After Effects... so if somebody either wants to try and do it for me or to try and help me to do it on my own, either one would be extremely helpful

Don't worry guys, I actually found the answer all on my own what I needed was to separate the image into 3 files, something I was probably going to do anyways to make exporting and importing the images easier and rotating the two top and bottom half images here's what I have right now (per background removal)Thanks for trying to help... but I think I'm ready to move on to After effects with this one The reason I'm moving it to after effects is simply because I understand simple movement/animation there already... if you're curious as to what I plan on doing with these images, the complete ball will sit in a hole in my border, turn a sharp 90 degrees right and then be replaced by the two half images, the bottom one will fade slowly out while the top is lifted off screen to the right... it's a fancy reveal for my upcoming project thanks again

Even I cant believe this is happening again! i'm once again asking for help with my account.  Since im very sick I ask that u look into my account and read the hell verizon has put me through and assist ending the hell once and for all even if that means ending my contract, i just want the hell over. I went into my bill tonight and the mess was still there I paid $110. that's what I owe

I guess I spoke too soon!  I really can't believe this nightmare is not over yet! My account is still wrong.  The credit that I was due totaled $63.00  I am looking at a message on my phone saying that $21.01 was credited which makes my balance $219.72.  I received a text the following day that says, I processed your credit of $30.00 and your new balance $216.73 how is that possible?  None of the late fees were credited and the amount due for my monthly charges are wrong.  Before any changes were made to my data plan back in Nov. My monthly charges were $140.00, I needed my hot spot back and i was told that the hot spot will increase my bill $10 for each phone that totals $20.  The customer rep that change my data plan at that time also gave me a credit of $20 to compensate for the increase until I had time to talk with customer service about the mix-up with my Hot spot. I originally had the hot spot, but the rep that change my plan almost a year prior told me nothing was changing except I was getting more for less money.  I explained to that rep that I need my hot spot 4 times a year...and I don't want my plan to have any changes. To verify what I'm telling u check my account and see that I called from Albany New York wanting to know where my hot spot was and I was told I didn't have the hot spot on my account since the last data change!  I lost money once again due to the verizon rep's.  so my current data plan the rep promised would increase $20 which makes my monthly charges that were $140 prior to the change $160 after the hot spot was returned to my account.  Then I was given a $12 credit per month for 12 months because of so many mistakes made to my account so with that $12 credit my monthly charges should $148 + surcharges + taxes and that's not what I see. I do know this much right now my account is in such a shambles I can hardly see the light at the end if there is an end!  I need real help!

  • Used Photoshop Image processor to batch convert from CR2 to Jpeg and the edits don't stick

Ok, so I had a huge wedding where the bride paid me to deliver a ton of images.  Well, i did all my edits in ACR and then photoshop.  While in photoshop all the edits look to have been applied.  So, I use edit > Scripts>Image processor to convert the CR2 files to Jpeg in one fell Swoop.   Well, on my last run though (checking any images for missed edits or what not), none of of the edits were applied to the saved jpegs.  So I bring one up in Photoshop (the saved Jpeg) and the edits are applied in Photoshop.  So I click save and it tries to save as a PSD file (which it was not originally saved as).  I click to JPEG and it asks to replace the existing file and I do.  Voila, all the edits are a-pplied.  Now, I have about 200 images that I need to do this on.
Is this common with the image processor?  Is it not for converting processed Raw files to JPEG and keep the edits?
I'm very frustrated since now, depending on my misunderstand of the tool, I have to spend extra time saving the files again.  (At least I don't have to re-edit them)

I have action I wrote so that on large groups of pictures I hit my actions.  It goes through the whole set.  Then I hit my flatten and it goes through the whole set.  Then I go to scripts > image processor  and covert them to jpeg.
The weird thing is when I bring up the jpegs in photoshop, all the edits are there.  When I look through Photo Mechanic or upload them to the web, they aren't

Why is it so difficult to convert a Raw image to a jpeg in Photoshop Elements ?! I have version 12. Once i realized to change the tick box in Camera Raw to 8 bit instead of 16 bit and Flatten image ( sometimes can flatten image if the flatten option isn't greyed out) hey presto i thought i was up and running. However after saving the photograph as a jpeg and renaming it e, after the word edit. I switched off/on my computer only for all the images i had spent time working on to have disappeared. Feeling very upset as there is no Technical Help to telephone at adobe and i don't know what to do.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!
