JSF 2: A NullPointerException hits an unexpected managed bean at submission

What a strange trouble I am facing today (I am still a newbie with JSF).
I have this web page:

meaning that the expected values are at the place I want them to be.
In the web page displayed, a new submit button now exists.

I removed all my assertions to see how far the submission could go when going unsane.
I discovered that JSF attempts to redisplay my web page, and not to follow on the next one...
... so I have one explanation.
Except that:
There is no fields in the form that require a validation.
(three hidden text fields, and a <h;inputTextarea> but that is not checked or mandatory).
The form is not supposed to fail,
and even if it had too, why the validation step doesn't carry the current managed bean at redisplay time, but instead re-create an empty managed bean?
My form starts with a:
<h:form id="${someId}"> where ${someId} is a scoped variable.
Can it causes a problem during submission? Shall I use only a constant id for my form?
What can you suggest me to do?
Do I have a way to discover what JSF is about to complain against, before it tries to redisplay the page? I see nothing in my logs, but may be I shall redefine a log level somewhere, add one handler or something else?

  • The Managed Bean in the faces-config.xml File

    I am still very new to JSF. I am confused about the managed bean.
    For example, I have a button in my web page. A click on this button invokes an action; say, ListAction.java.
    In this ListAction class, I instantiate a business delegate; say, ListPersonnel.java and call a method in this business delegate to return an ArrayList: personnel. Of course, this business delegate goes through facade, DAO, etc. to populate the ArrayList. This ArrayList is a collecation of a JavaBean called PersonnelBean that gets and sets a number of personnel information; such as ssn, name, etc.
    Upon this ArrayList is successfully populated and received by the ListAction class, I am going to display a web page with a table. In JSF, it is <h:dataTable ...>.
    My questions are regarding the managed bean in the faces-config.xml file.
    1. Which one is my <managed-bean-class>? packageName.ListAction? or packageName.PersonnelBean? or something else?
    2. What should be my <managed-bean-name>? I guess that I can give a name I like. Is it right? What about xyz?
    3. Then, how do I specify the "value" attribute of my <h:dataTable ...> tag when I display a web page to show the data table? Is it correct to specify value="#{xyz.personnel}"? What is the correct specification if it is wrong?

  • JSF + Tomahawk component NullPointerException

    Hi All,
    I made a sun JSF portlet by using the tomahawk 1.1.3 file upload component. The bean "UploadedFile myFile" is not getting set in the "MyBean.java" file. I get a java.lang.NullPointerException when I am trying to myFile.getName() or myFile.getInputStream().
    The inputFileUpload method should set the myFile Bean but it seems like its not getting set

    You cannot mix differnet JSF implementations. Use the one or the other.
    As you stated that you're "using" Mojarra, get rid of those myfaces jars.

  • @EJB annotation in JSF managed beans not working

    I've been trying to get the @EJB annotation to work in a JSF manged bean without success.
    The EJB interface is extremely simple:

    Well, the more I research this issue, the more confused I get. There have been a couple of threads discussing this already, and in this one Debu Panda states that:
    "Support of injection in JSF managed bean is part of JSF 1.1 and OC4J 10.1.3.1 does not support JSF 1.1"

    But if you look in the release notes for Oracle Application Server 10g R3, it is explicitly stated that JSF 1.1. is supported. So I'm not sure what to believe.
    I've also tried changing the version in web.xml as described here:

    but that didn't help either.
    I've filed a SR on Metalink for this, but haven't got any response yet.

    No you haven't, because
    Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.example.www.Sample_PortType a relevant class can still not be found and Java really is not going to lie to you; this class is not on your application's classpath so it is either missing or put in the wrong place. Note that missing classes can be caused by you forgetting to properly redeploying your application - its usually something silly like that. Figure out what you did wrong and correct your mistake.
    The fact that you have to mention that you "setup the classpath" is questionable; in web applications you don't touch the classpath at all. So what exactly did you do?

  • JSF - Best Practice For Using Managed Bean

    I want to discuss what is the best practice for managed bean usage, especially using session scope or request scope to build database driven pages
    ---- Session Bean ----
    - In the book Core Java Server Faces, the author mentioned that most of the cases session bean should be used, unless the processing is passed on to other handler. Since JSF can store the state on client side, i think storing everything in session is not a big memory concern. (can some expert confirm this is true?) Session objects are easy to manage and states can be shared across the pages. It can make programming easy.
    In the case of a page binded to a resultset, the bean usually helds a java.util.List object for the result, which is intialized in the constructor by query the database first. However, this approach has a problem: when user navigates to other page and comes back, the data is not refreshed. You can of course solve the problem by issuing query everytime in your getXXX method. But you need to be very careful that you don't bind this XXX property too many times. In the case of querying in getXXX, setXXX is also tricky as you don't have a member to set. You usually don't want to persist the resultset changes in the setXXX as the changes may not be final, in stead, you want to handle in the actionlistener (like a save(actionevent)).
    I would glad to see your thought on this.

    request bean is initialized everytime a reuqest is made. It sometimes drove me nuts because JSF seems not to be every consistent in updating model values. Suppose you have a page showing parent-children a list of records from database, and you also allow user to change directly on the children. if I hbind the parent to a bean called #{Parent} and you bind the children to ADF table (value="#{Parent.children}" var="rowValue". If I set Parent as a request scope, the setChildren method is never called when I submit the form. Not sure if this is just for ADF or it is JSF problem. But if you change the bean to session scope, everything works fine.
    I believe JSF doesn't update the bindings for all component attributes. It only update the input component value binding. Some one please verify this is true.
    In many cases, i found request bean is very hard to work with if there are lots of updates. (I have lots of trouble with update the binding value for rendered attributes).
    However, request bean is working fine for read only pages and simple binded forms. It definitely frees up memory quicker than session bean.

    I think it should be either Option 2 or Option 3.
    Option 2 would be necessary if the bean data depends on some request parameters.
    (Example: Getting customer bean for a particular customer id)
    Otherwise Option 3 seems the reasonable approach.
    But, I am also pondering on this issue. The above are just my initial thoughts.

  • Can't get JSF to access managed bean methods from web page

    I'm using NetBeans 6.7.1 and Glassfish v2.1
    Having problems here can somebody please help? It is really
    frustrating because I have written apps like this before in fact I
    used one as a model to create an even simpler app and still can't get
    it to work. I ran it through the debugger and it stops in the
    constructor so it looks like the bean object is being created, but the
    setUid method and the testit method are not being entered when I click
    on the enter commandbutton. Can somebody PLEASE give me an idea as to
    what might be going on? I am totally stumped and this is holding up

    In the WebForms (Microsoft .NET) I have an method on the codebehind called Page_Load where I put my initialization code for my page.

    You can do this with a PhaseListener. Just regiser a new listener for the RESTORE_VIEW phase, and implement the beforePhase method; you can do this in the backing bean's constructor, or somewhere elase. This is pretty much the same as the Page_Load event handler in .NET.

  • Reset JSF session and the managed beans with sesison scope

    Hi,
    this is a very general question and maybe stupid for most of you. I have my jsf/facelets web application and i use inside of this application some managed beans, which are session beans. I want to know how is it possible to reset this beans. I'm asking this question beacuse i have this kind of problem: i built my web application which has a login form and i use the browser to test it. When i browse to the login page and I login with my credentials i get my customized home page. Then i open another istance of the browser and i browse to the login page again but this time i login as a different user. The result home page is the same as i got before with my login credentials, so the session is always the same. Instead i want the session and all its objects to be resetted for the new user! Do youn know which is the solution?

    The fact is that i want to have two sessions in parallel, so using the same browser and opening two tabs, i want to browse to the login page and access as two totaly different users and using in parallel the application without the problem of one user's action affecting the other user beacuse of session sharing. So I want to force the application to create two different session for the two users logins, because as i told you before as it is now, they are sharing the same sesison. And i think that if i at the login time I iterate thorugh the session and delete all the objects i will be able to have only one session per time. Isn't it?

    Does someone know how can I consume programatically a human task payload inside a JSF Managed Bean?

    In an old version of JSF, namely 1.2-b20-FCS from April/21/2006, I could access nested properties of a managed bean. So I had a managed bean OuterBean, and in JSF I could write

    But in the latest JSF from July/17/2008, this nested stuff is not working.
    Simple access like #{outerBean.propertyA} works, but nested access like #{outerBean.innerBean.propertyA} does not.

  • Data Palette not showing Managed Beans for Dynamic Web Project, JSF 2.1

    I have a problem in OEPE (oepe-juno-distro-win32.zip), where the Data tab in Palette shows no Managed Beans,
    even if I created them in the ManagedBeans in faces-config.xml using the Faces Config Editor.
    I have created a Dynamic Web Project with these Facets:
    Dynamic Web Module 3.0
    Java 1.7 (JDK 1.7_21)
    Java Annotation Processing Support 5.0
    JavaScript 1.0
    JavaServer Faces 2.1
    JSTL 1.2
    Oracle WebLogic Web App Extensions 12.1.1
    I am using Oracle WebLogic Server 12c 12.1.1 zip distribution for hosting the application.
    For example, I have a UserBean Managed Bean of Session scope, that has 3 String fields
    and the respective getters and setters.
    I create a "test.jspx" file, and from the Palette -> Tags tab -> JSF HTML I drag a Form into
    the new file so I can connect it to UserBean and generate a form to enter its details.
    I select the "Generate a form tag and content from data" and in the Choose Bean dialog
    there is none of my Beans.
    What could be the problem?
