JSSE and port assignment

I created a jsse client/server socket app that seems to work ok on a local network. If I have the server lisening on a particular port (in a DOS box) the client (also a DOS box) can see it. Is there any way to direct the client to use a particular port on it's own end to connect to the servers listener. It looks like the client is incrementing the port number every time I connect?

I'm not sure of your level of TCP expertise, so let me preface this by saying you really should
understand how TCP client connections can work before trying this. Do you really need to
use an specific outbound port on your client side?
Anyway, if this is really what you want to do, look at
javax.net.SocketFactory.createSocket(InetAddress address, int port, InetAddress localAddress, int localPort)

  • Are "Back to my MAC" and "Port Forwarding" mutually exclusive?

    I have been using APExtreme and Port Forwarding successfully for several weeks now. The PF is to allow access to game players on a PC which acts as a server on the web. All Good.
    One more thing, I have a ISP provided wireless modem/router to talk to the cable and the world. It seems to work either bridged or un-bridged.
    I have disabled the wireless on the ISP's modem/router. (Actually the ISP's device doesn't hold a candle to the APE.)
    Still all good.
    So the firewall is on in the APExtreme and none on the modem router, and I have a port defined for my gamers to get access to my server in the APExtreme.
    I now want to implement Back to my MAC on my MBP and my other Apple devices. I believe these use iCloud for which I have an account and it seems to be working well with my iPhone.
    In Properties, when I select BtmM, iCloud says communications will be slow if I have port forwarding on. Also I will not be able to use the router function in my Modem/router.
    I'd really like to have the modem/router firewall up, and do the port forwarding there, but the BtmM will likely not get through.
    So what does anyone suggest?
    Can I use BtmM and port forwarding without too much degradation?
    Please advise.

    To best answer your question on whether the two are "mutually exclusive," let take a look at how Back to My Mac (BTMM) basically works.
    BTMM - General Requirements
    OS X Leopard 10.7.3+
    Active iCloud account. Each Mac & the AirPort router, that will be relying on BTMM, needs to be configured with the same account.
    A publicly reachable IP address for your router.
    A router that supports either NAT-PMP or UPnP. For AirPorts, be sure it is running 7.6.1+ firmware.
    BTMM uses TCP port 5354 and UDP ports 4500 & 5353 for communications.
    BTMM - Basic Communication Flow
    For a computer connected to the Internet via a router, BTMM "asks" the router for its configuration information. For a router, like your AirPort, that uses NAT-PMP, BTMM will ask the router to assign arbitrary public ports. In turn, the router will provide these port assignments (& the router's Public IP address) back to BTMM.
    BTMM then sends this information to the iCloud account. In background iCloud updates a special set of DNS entries to be used by BTMM. These entries are then made available to all BTMM clients using your iCloud account. When a computer, with BTMM enabled, uses your iCloud credentials, it automatically retrieves a list of all other computers/routers that are registered with the same account. All these devices should then appear under the SHARED section of the Finder.
    When attempting to connect to a remote computer (or router), BTMM creates a secure connection to that remote device using the information from the iCloud account.
    Once the connection is established, the devices can then communicate with each other.
    So potentially, unless you are using Port Mapping for any of the ports BTMM uses, they should not conflict.

  • VLAN Port Assignment failed on Campus Manager 5.1

    Dear All,
    i deploying LMS 3.1  in my organization.
    I finalized the installation and  all looks fine BUT   when i try to assign a port to a different VLAN in Campus Manager (5.1)  i am getting the following error message.
    There were some errors during operation."
    Error occured moving port Gi1/8 in device 10.x.y.z  into vlan with index XY.
    Cause:An error occured while performing SNMP operation.
    Action:Examine and save the server log file and report the error to the product administrator for further action.
    VLAN Port Assignment failed
    any idea?
    here is simply the config  related to SNMP on my switch.

    thank you so much for your kind reply. I configured the snmp RW community string on the switch matching the credentials  on the LMS server but still getting the same error message when i try to assign ports no a different VLAN
    here is my commands for the switch:

    snmp-server enable informs

    and on the LMS server i set the values:

  • Hp officejet j6450 port assignment changes each time i start up.

    When I startup, the printer always comes up in "offline status", and I cannot figure out how to reset to online.  The problem seems to be that each time the printer syncs up with the wireless router, the port assignments change, so I have to "discover" the correct port and reset that via the Windows control panel properties for the printer.  How can I set this such that the port assignment remains constant?  or is there some simpler solution?  Thanks.

    Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). You can find the DHCP range of the router using its internal settings page or in its manual. Use the CD that came with your router or type the router's IP address (ends in .1) into a browser.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
    Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
    After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

    Hi Guys,
    Iam seeing above issue on two of my switches connected to core switch ....i know there are quite of few discussion open on same issue but mine is diff....
    i see same issue on two switches connected via core swicth on same vlan ( 112)....when i do mac address lookup it says the mac thats generating this error is invalid so cant track the source of this mac....also just saw on topoogy change notification on core traced it back to originating switch which is also generating this error but dnt see any change on the switch that is generated topology change notification....prob is vlan 112 all interface on both switches conected via core are generating this message so five interfaces each .....any expert advise on how to approach it as i cant get to source port generating this as nearly five ports in vlan 112 on bloth switches generating this error. thanks

    There are lots of thread discussing about this, you should do a search before creating a new post.
    Anyway, this is how you approach these types of flapping:
    1. Is the the given MAC flapping in the log flapping only 1 time or you see it multiple times over a reasonobly short time?
       If you see it only once or once every 2-3 hours this might be not an  issue worth being investigated. Sporadic one time flapping are expected  in L2 broadcast domain.
    If you see it often continue to step 2.
    2. Identify and locate the flapping mac in vlan 125: 3270.990a.a504
    Is  the mac of a dual-homes server using some kind of load balancing  algorithm (active/active) for which the same address is used from both  NICs?
    If yes, the message is not and issue but just an indication.  Fix this type of LB (make it active/standby or make sure the server  uses 2 different mac addresses, one per NIC) or if it is not possible  leave it like this.
    3. Is the MAC a the wireless NIC of a PC?
    Make sure that the user was not moving from one AP to another (flapping is normal in this case)
    4.
    See if you have increasing TCN's and check if they are coming from the same interface.
    From  this point on you keep on troubleshooting STP until you find the  offending link (likely going up and down) or the switch. You also need  to check if STP in vlan112 is coherent with the actual L2 topology you  have.

    In large networks in which multiple hosts from multiple vendors are

    order to track down these MAC addresses. This list is the front end of the
    database where IEEE has registered all MAC addresses that have been assigned

    These are other issues that can cause this message to appear:
    ·        Server NIC redundancy problem?There is a server with a dual-attached
    NIC that misbehaves and does not follow the standards. The server uses the
    same MAC address for both ports that connect to the same switch.
    ·        Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) flapping?Flapping HSRP can cause
    these messages to appear in the Supervisor Engine console. If you notice that
    HSRP implementation in your network is unstable, refer to Understanding and

    ·        Host reflects packets back onto the network?The reflection of packets
    back onto the network by a host can also cause flapping. Typically, the root
    cause of this packet reflection is a broken NIC or any failure of the physical
    interface of the host that is connected to the port.
    If the reflection of packets by the host is your root cause, obtain a sniffer
    trace and examine the traffic that goes to and from the ports on which the
    messages have appeared. If a host reflects packets, you typically see
    duplicate packets in the trace. The duplicate packets are a possible symptom
    of this flapping of the MAC address.

    those are by no mean errors! they are informative messages which, in some circumnstances, can represent issues.
    As I wrote in step 1, very first step is to determine how often you see a given mac flapping between 2 interfaces.
    How often do you see that?
    I am reiterating the concept as, according to your description, what you see can be pretty normal in your scenario.
    Maybe it is worth clarifying that the message only means that a frame learned via Fa0/21 is now seen from Gi0/1. In static and stable networks traffic from a given host should always come from the same path and therefore should not be re-learned from another port. Every time a switch notices that a MAC which was previously learned from a port is now seen and learned from another one it trigeers that message as this behaviour might represent an ongoing L2 loop, but as I wrote this is not always true.
    However since you have an AP connected to Fa0/21 it is likely that a host with mac 32:70:99:0a:a5:04 was connected to it for some time, and then it browsed and connected to another AP. This is why your switch started seeing traffic from that mac coming from a distribution/switch switch connected to gi0/1, as the l2 path changed.
    I was not able to find the vendor of 32:70:99 as this is not an assigned OUI. Also since this is an unicast locally administered address it could besome kind of application/protocol using it.
    What you have to do is
    - Check in stable condition where this mac is learned from, that is following it switch by switch until you find the port. Since it comes from an AP most likely it is learned from the radio antenna of the AP. You need to check wheter this is an addressed learned over the radio or local to your motorola AP.
    - Once you identify you you will be able to udnerstand why it flapped.
    Having said that you will understand that the majority of your questions don't have too much sense now.. however
    1. They are messages and not errors. see above why you see them.
    2. Check on APs mac address table and see where that address is learned from. I don't know if your AP has some kind of mac notification feature logging all the changes. This is somethign you have to work out yourself. The focus is to first understand what is the mac address in the first place.
    3. This question means nothing. If the flapping address is the mac of some kind of wireless NIC (laptop, smartphone etc.) you cannot prevent users from moving from a site to another. This is waht wireless networks are about. Still, sporadic flapping messages are expected as they just represent how the network is being utilized and you cannot fix them as there is nothing to fix.
    4. The message itself has no impact. If they represent users moving from a wireless location to another there is no harm. If they are continuous and are not related to wireless networks they might indicate a L2 loop. To verify that you need to look for other symptoms which normally are associated with l2 loops: high cpu on the switches in the path, interface drops (on l2 and l3 interface, if present), increasing STP TCNs (not all the times),  unstable STP topology, unstable control plane, similar logs logged in all/many switches. Some or all symptoms can occurr.

  • Difference Between Port Forwarding and Port Triggering.

    Hi guys,
    I'm lost! The differences between port forwarding and port triggering is driving me nuts! It all seems very subtle to me. Can anyone explain to me (in a very simple way) what exactly are their differences. Thanks in advance!!

    Port Forwarding
    The big difference between this and port triggering is that forwarding is fixed.. you forward a port and it is always forwarded.. IE available to connection.. basically the forwarded port is excluded from the fire walling abilities of the router.  Second it is static and applies to one machine only. Whereas you could set port triggering to the router and thereafter any machine on the LAN can trigger it unless its already in use.. port forwarding must be specified for each individual machine.
    Port forwarding requires you to give each PC on the network its own unique static IP address.. Although there is ssh port forwarding that can be set dynamically. Most users only have the option of static ip port forwarding.
    The real downside of port forwarding is that it can be very tricky to set up... You may have to allow a series of ports on a machine and have to do that for each machine you want to allow through. Also routers often have limited abilities and may not allow you the ability to forward a port or select the service you require.
    Port Triggering
     This is a way of Dynamically assigning a service to a port WHEN it is required by an outgoing service. The port is initially not allowed so nothing can get in and you are protected by your network.  
    A good example of this is when using Yahoo! voice .. the voice works fine for a few minutes after you connect to Yahoo! then Yahoo! sends some kind of packet that requires a response from your PC... The packet is allowed in through your router no prob but the outgoing reply is not authorized to open a port on the router and is thus blocked.

  • LMS 4.0 VLAN Port Assignment Cat3750X

    Hello together
    Have installed LMS 4.0 at a customer. The main switches he uses are the following ones:
    WS-C3750X-24P-S (1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.1224)
    First problem I faced was with lack of support for Cisco View and the mentioned device. This is fixed with the following package Cisco View Device Update: Cat3750.cv50.13-0.zip. Have tested this today.
    But now to my new problem. One reason for Cisco View usage is VLAN assignement. Unfortunately this is not supported with the Cat3750 devices and Cisco View like with other devices. So I thought I show the customer how to do it with the VLAN Port Assignement:
    Configuration > Workflows > VLAN > Configure Port Assignment
    Unfortunatly it seems that this is not supported with these devices.     It even seems it should be supported. See picture in the bottom from the above link.
    My question to the community:

    - @Cisco, is this feature really not supported with the following device: WS-C3750X-24P-S? If yes, are any patches planned with release date.

    Thanks for your feedback. Have asked the customer to do the following steps and send me a screen shot:
    - Configuration > Workflows > VLAN > Configure Port Assignment
    - Select Domain Selector
    - Choose a Domain of a Switch C3750X
    - Click on List Ports
    Actually the same thing what I have done during my installation Onsite. When I have done the above steps I only have received a empty windows. Now, a week later it seems to work. Enclosed a screen shot with evidence for all those you have the same devices in use.
    Happy that it works. Funny, that it didn't worked when I was onsite. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your feedback / support.

    mmm it's a port mistake... try to check if the port number you wanna use is free on your system.
    the bind operation is when an application try to put a socket in listening on the port u specified. this means that if the port is busy or dedicated to another process a bind exception is gonna ti be rise.
    try to change the port number.
    do few tests disabling system firewall or giving enough right to the application.

  • Visual Voicemail gone after upgrade to 2.0 (and porting number)

    Anyone else experience this? I upgraded to 2.0 and at the same time I ported the old iPhone to another cell phone number on my account with ATT. The upgrade to 2.0 and porting appeared to go OK as everything else is working EXCEPT when on the phone application, I can not get the visual voicemail button to do anything. I press it and it acts like it is taking some time to open but it never brings up the visual voicemail screen. The phone part works as usual in all other ways.

    I upgraded to the pre-release version of 2.0 and it worked fine. Then this morning i tried to update to the official 2.0 and it could not connect to iTunes, and that pinwheel kept spinning. So I pressed home button and power button until it (iPhone) rebooted. Then i connected it to iTunes and it asked me to restore.... So i pressed the option key (in mac, idk what it is in windows) and selected the prerelease version to downgrade to and now its fine. So...... good luck all
