Just got an external isight-

Been trying it out and I was wondering if the image quality is better than the more recent built in cameras on the mac. Its certainly better than the USB cameras that my buddies have.
If I could only figure out version I have....

Hello Zband
... if the image quality is better than ... built in cameras on the mac.
Given normal webcam distance from the lens and adequate light (video takes more light that normal room lighting), I think the image quality is approximately equal.
External iSight has auto-focus so it can offer better images at widely different distances to the subject. It is also easier to attach filters and accessory lenses, but this difference is not really an image quality difference.
If your only use for iSight is video chat, your image quality question can best be answered by your video chat partner, who is the one who sees the image your iSight sends. Here is a comparison video test I made some time back with a chat partner who has both internal and external iSights.
My chat buddy changed NOTHING between the two pictures except which iSight he was using. I see differences in the amount of software image sharpening, contrast, and color balance. However, I do not see any significant difference in image quality between the two.
If you want to compare the quality of snapshot still images for email or posting on the web, the best way to critically examine image quality is to make a print of the same subject made with both cameras. I have not done this kind of test using my iSight because, although I occasionally make an iSight snapshot to email, I almost always use my digital still cameras for images I want to have enough quality to print or post.
Rather than accept my assessment, you can do a comparison and judge for yourself. Capture an image of your face with both your iSight and a different Mac that has a built-in iSight. It is best if you do this as near as possible to the same time, same size, and in the same light. Then print both images and look for image quality differences that are important to you.
If I could only figure out version I have....
Look on your iSight's Packaging. The version/model number is printed on the outside of the box near the serial number.
If you did not get the original packaging with your iSight, look in System Profiler. (System Profiler's model identifier is different from the model number printed on iSight's packaging.) To find your "Model:" information, your iSight must be connected. Launch System Profiler, and click the items shown below to see the info about your iSight:
Your Service Tech can find out, too, but he only needs iSight version information in case he needs parts. However, from a user point of view, all external iSights work alike.
My old Rev A works just as well as exactly like the last ones made. The only iSight model ("version") difference important to users is which mounting hardware was furnished. My Rev A came with adhesive mounts, while Rev B and C came with Magnetic mounts for the aluminum framed Apple Displays. All versions had a reasonably good mount for your PowerBook.
Cheers,
Jim

  • Just Got an External Hard Drive

I bought an Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus, with 750GB of space. I pretty excited about having it, but I want to make sure that I'm doing things correctly, right from the go.
    So far, I have:
    1) Connected it
    2) Reformatted it to Journaled HFS+ format
    3) Installed the software that came with it. (Not that I need it, I assume.)
    4) Created an archive of everything that came pre-loaded on it and put the archive on my desktop
    5) Partitioned it into 7 volumes (Is this a bit too much?)
    Volumes:

    6) Tested it (It works!)
Now I'd like to know if I did what I was supposed to do when adding an external hard drive to your system.
Do the sizes of the volumes seem right?
I have all these disk images all over my desk top. I tried to put them into one folder. Ha ha! They do NOT want to go into a folder. So I don't think I'm supposed to do that. What AM I supposed to do?
Before I partitioned the drive, I ejected it and the icon disappeared from my desktop. I wondered how I could get it back on the desktop. Tried a bunch of things and nothing worked. Then I thought, 'I'll try a restart." Damned if that didn't work. Oh, happy! Happy! Now if I eject one or all of the volumes, will I have to restart to get them back every time I want to back up or store something?
I noticed that SMART status isn't supported. Does that matter?
I'd like to back up my OS on the Maxtor. Do I really need the software mentioned in other threads (Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner)? Can't I just drop all the folders from Macintosh HD in Finder to the appropriate icon?
I know there's a lot of question here. Sorry!
I'd really appreciate a review and advise.
    Thanks!

If there's a practical limit on the number of disk partitions, it's the number of drive icons cluttering up the Desktop (unless you set the Finder preferences to not show hard drives on the desktop). The correct size of disk partitions is whatever works for your personal use and preferences.
If you eject one partition on an external drive, all the partitions on that drive will also be ejected. You need to eject the drive before you physically disconnect it, or power it down separately from the computer; otherwise you risk damaging the drive by interrupting write activity (which includes system tasks beyond any overt copies or write that you command). It's OK to just leave the external drive powered up and connected to the computer. If you shut down the computer, the shutdown process will automatically dismount the external drive partitions; after the computer has shut down, you can power off the external drive. Turn the external on before starting the Mac. Restarts don't require dismounting or power cycling the external drive.
If you dismount the external drive, you can remount the drive partitions using Disk Utility, or unplug the external from the computer and then reconnect it. (Disk Utility obviously puts less wear on the connectors.)
A Finder drag-and-copy from the internal to the external drive will not capture invisible files (Unix systems quite literally have tens of thousands of invisible files), and copying the System and Library folders in particular will then yield unusable folders. Use SuperDuper or CCC. You can (probably) use the Finder to copy /Users if you like.
Non-support of SMART status is a pain if you ever need to troubleshoot the external drive but won't affect normal use.
Mounted disk images (which appear as drive icons on the Desktop) cannot be moved into a folder, only ejected from the desktop. If you're referring to the drive icons from the external drive partitions, those remain on the Desktop until the external drive is ejected. As mentioned, you can set the Finder preferences to hike all hard drive icons by unchecking the appropriate checkbox. If you're also referring to mounted disk images created after clciking on a disk image .dmg file, those also stay on the Desktop while mounted. You can move disk image files (the file icons, ending in .dmg) which when double-clicked create the disk images into a folder and copy that folder of .dmg files to where ever you have room to put it. Check that the copied .dmg disk image files will create a mounted disk image when double-clicked; you can then delete the original .dmg files to free room on the internal HD.

  • I just got an external hard drive and did my first backup of my total MacBook Pro.  In my confusion I thought I could drag a particular item to the hard drive icon on my desktop.

I had my most frequently used documents in Documents folder in the Dock.  I thought I'd just drag it to the external hard drive, which I did, but then it was gone from the dock and I haven't had any luck putting it back.  Somehow the applications folder has also disappeared!  Can someone please tell me explicitly how to get documents and application folders back on the dock.

Thank you - I had tried to do this but it didn't work.  What I finally found that worked was that on the desktop I right clicked and then selected "new folder".  I named it documents (then did the same for applications) and dragged those folders from the desktop to the dock, and am in the process of dragging the documents and applicatons from their original folders into the new ones - it seems to be working fine.
I have no idea why it didn't work as you suggested - I tried several times with no luck, I even took a few unused icons off the dock in case there was not enough room.
So hopefully one of our solutions will help someone else.  Thanks again.

  • Have a mac mini. Just got a external HD. I want to store my itunes media on my external HD and play back on Windows XP laptop. My laptop does not recognize the HD. Only recognizes the empty partition I created on my mac when I partition the drive. What's

I have a mac mini-snow leopard. I recently bought an external HD. I want to use part of the HD to back up my mac via Time Machine. The other part I want to use to store my Itunes and other media such as movies with VLC so that I can take the HD and play it back thru my windows XP laptop. The problem is that my laptop does not see the part of the external drive that has my mac info stored on it. Only sees the drive ( as drive E ) with zero data that was created by me when I partitioned it on my mac. I partitioned the drive in two. One partitioned under GUID for mac. The other part under exfat for windows. Any suggestions on why my XP laptop cannot view the mac info on the HD. Thanks.

you'll have to install e.g. MacDrive or HFS+ for Windows on your winsloth machine.

  • New External iSight & still same problem

I just got my external iSight camera replaced because I was haveing a issue that whenever I plugged it in, the light would turn on for about 2 seconds, then it would make a noise and shut off. Rotating the ring in the front was of no help either. I sent in for a replacment and now the new one has the exact same problem. The only thing that I can think of is that there is some kinnd of compatability issue or something. Any suggestions are aprecheated, thank you.
    System Specs:
    Powermac G5
    DualCore 2.0Ghz
    2.6GB RAM
    OS X Tiger 10.4.6
    PowerMac G5 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Cujo,
Thats common. Plugging the iSight in to the firewire port results in the green light coming on and it makes a little noise, thats the camera itself being detected by OSX. Then the little light goes off.
When you open iChat, and open the preferences for Video/Audio, the light will come back on, maybe make the same noise, and should be working.
The green light and associated iSight noises (auto focus), are only present when the camera is in use.
    IE: in a video conference.
    Otherwise, the light is off.
It is not a problem, its how the camera works.
Also, turning the front of the camera only enables or disables the privacy shutter.

  • Cannot hear audio from external iSight

My machine is a 2007 Mac Pro octo, 16GB RAM, OS 10.5.2. Software Update reports the system as up-to-date.
I just got an external iSight webcam. It's recognized by System Profiler as model 0x8, revision 1.0.3. (For unknown reasons it's reported as having four sub-units and a 200MB/sec connection speed.) iSight Updater reports the unit as up-to-date.
Its video appears in iChat's (4.0.2) video preview window, and the video's quality is acceptable. The audio meter at the bottom of the preview displays a signal that varies in response to the sound level in the iSight's environment.
The iSight appears in System Prefs/Sound as a FireWire input. The display there varies with the environment's sound level, and is responsive to changes in the Input Volume setting on the same screen.
The iSight shows up in Audio MIDI Setup as a fixed one-channel, 16-bit, 48kHz audio source.
The above tells me the iSight is producing an audio signal. Nothing I've been able to do, however, has permitted me actually to hear this audio signal. Whether I select the Mac Pro's built-in output, its built-in line output, or an external FireWire audio interface, I cannot hear the iSight's audio. Using these same configurations, however, I can hear audio from QuickTime Player or any other audio app I've tried, as well as all system alerts. The problem seems to lie in the signal's routing.
I've followed this forum's maintenance and troubleshooting guidelines, including isolating the iSight on the FireWire bus and repairing permissions from a second 10.5.2 start-up drive.
I've spent several hours searching for clues about what might be happening, but have exhausted the suggestions I could find.
Does anyone have any further thoughts on how I might go about capturing this camera's audio signal?
I'd appreciate any assistance that gets me there.
    Thanks.

    Hello Hominahomina
You sound like an experienced Mac user, and you have tried most of the things that can cause this problem. You probably have already checked to be certain that your iChat > Video > Microphone Enabled has a check (tick) mark.
If so, the next suspect I can suggest for your consideration is a possible hardware or software conflict with your "external FireWire audio interface". Disconnect it and test iSight audio again. If it still does not work, uninstall any software that was installed with your audio interface and try again.
If that does not help, you can use any of the suggestions from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional that you have not already tried.
If, when you play back the file, you can hear the sound recorded with your iSight using iMovie (4 or later), QuickTime Pro, or some other app that can record audio, your iSight itself cannot be the problem. You may have a corrupted iChat preference file. Try this:
    • quit iChat if it is running
    • delete your Home(User)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ichat.plist file.
A new .plist file will be created the next time you launch iChat, but deleting the .plist file deletes several iChat preference settings, so those you want to be different from the default values will need to be reset.
If all else fails, your external iSight likely needs help form an Apple Service Technician. The external iSight you bought is likely not covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions. If your external iSight needs parts that you or your Service Technician cannot locate, http://www.synaptech.com may be able to help you obtain those that are still available.
BTW, your posted system info shows Mac OS X (10.4.10), but you say that you repaired permissions from "a second 10.5.2 start-up drive." Hopefully, your posted info merely needs to be updated. Although we must start from a different disk to repair a disk, I am sure you know that we repair permissions on a startup disk using its disk utility when started from that drive. For benefit of less experienced readers, don't repair permissions for a disk with one Mac OS version (like 10.4.x) when started up from a different Mac OS like 10.5.x because doing so can cause serious permissions problems.

  • Photo Booth ignores external iSight

    Hello people
Ever since my upgrade to Leopard, Photo Booth no longer uses my external firewire iSight camera.
Previously, Photo Booth would use the external iSight camera, when the built-in was unavailable because the notebook lid was closed. Now it just says the camera is off.
Both iMovie and iChat AV will happily use the external iSight camera. If I try to use a Video Input in a Quartz Composition, the external iSight is ignored just as it is in Photo Booth.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Best regards,
    Anders Borum

    two things to try:
    (1) With Photo Booth (v2) running, unplug your external iSight, wait about 5 seconds, and reconnect.
    (2) If you still do not see the camera view, turn external iSight off (rotate the front of the lens barrel), wait about 5 seconds, and turn iSight on again.
Although I am not using an iNtel Mac, the first one got me a dark image, and the second one got my external iSight working correctly.

  • External iSight died

I've got an external iSight that has worked just fine until a couple of days ago. Now the green light turns on briefly when I try to turn the camera on, then with kind of a click and a sigh, the light goes off and the camera won't work.
    I'm running a 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, OS 10.4.9
Never had a problem with the camera in the past. It did get quite warm while in use, but not so overly warm that it couldn't be touched.
Anybody have any ideas of how to revive the iSight or is it likely just toast?

    Hello, Paul
... the green light turns on briefly ... then ... the light goes off
Don't get sidetracked by the green light. It is normal for the light to turn on briefly and then go out when you plug in iSight or boot up your Mac. The fact that the camera will not work is where we will concentrate.
You can test your iSight to determine whether it is functional using these tips. By using these tests, you may be able to rule out some parts of your system as the cause of your problem. The trouble may be as simple as a faulty connection or cable.
Try to eliminate as many system elements as you can that might be the source of your trouble. These can include your iSight, the iSight's Firewire cable, your Mac's Firewire port connections, a Firewire circuit that needs to be reset, or possibly even damaged hardware inside your iMac. The smaller the list of possible problems, the smaller your list of possible corrective actions will be.
If you have changed any hardware or software since your iSight worked, carefully consider the Possible hardware or software conflicts suggestions.
When you try Apple's "iSight: How to Troubleshoot," be sure to test your iSight camera in another user account to determine whether the issue is user-specific.
If your iSight works with some applications but not others, tell us which worked and which did not.
It did get quite warm while in use, but not so
overly warm that it couldn't be touched.
This, too, sounds normal, so I would suggest that you not be concerned unless your iSight now stays cool. That could indicate that your connection, cable, or Firewire circuitry is bad. An iSight that is not functioning at all would also be cool while plugged into a running Mac.
Anybody have any ideas of how to revive the iSight ...
If none of the above suggestions correct your problem, you can try the following:- Repair permissions.
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC).
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
If none of these suggestions help and you do not get better suggestions here, I suggest that you contact your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check. There are no user-serviceable parts inside iSight, but your Service Technician may be able to repair it.

  • External iSight cam not working with iChat

I've got an external iSight cam that was working fine in 10.5.8 with iChat - I'm using 10.6.1 now. Now when I open iChat, the camera stays off (no green light) and iChat video preview says that another application is using the camera so it's not available, which of course, is not true.
I've tried everything I know, but can't get it to work. The camera works with Skype, so I know it's functioning properly.
When I checked the Connection Doctor, under Network, it says that there's something in my network setup that is preventing video chats, but I haven't changed anything since upgrading to SL. I have a direct ethernet cable to my DSL modem/router - Covad. My wife's iChat works fine with her new LogiTech camera, and she's on the same home network/router.

There is only a Alpha test version of the one for Snow Leopard.
The iChat 4 version does not work in Snow Leopard/iChat 5 and that was why I was asking.

  • Static with external iSight & Mac Pro

I've got an external iSight that works fine with my ibook G4 but produces annoying static or noise when I use it with my new Mac Pro. The picture has a closely spaced series of white horizontal lines down the right hand side. You can see a screencapture here:

  • External Microphone when using (external) iSight

I recently got an external iSight for my MacPro. I bought the iSight so I could record videos through iMovie directly on my computer. I usually do covers of music, or related to music videos, so I use an external microphone. It's a M-Audio Producer USB. It's plugged in into the side of my Apple Keyboard, and in every application, the external microphone works. Except for iMovie.
When I try to record a video directly from iMovie using my external iSight, iMove decides to use the iSight's built-in microphone to record the audio, even though I have an external microphone plugged in. In System Preferences, the Producer USB is chosen as the main input for audio coming in. And in iMovie, the Producer USB is also chosen as the microphone in the VoiceOver section. Even with these two options pointin to the Producer USB for audio, iMovie still records audio using the built-in microphone on the external iSight.
Does anyone know why this is happening? And how I may be able to fix it? My music covers have come to a halt because of this D:
    Thanks!

    Hi Appleman & David B.
Thanks for your answers. I think David has a point... - that the program could be secured against feedback - consequently! Since it's not made for music recording. (even though using headphones normally solves that problem, right?).
Not a word about this issue in the support menu, and I've checked the system preferences>sound several times.
I'll see if I can find a small mixer somewhere. That sounds like the right solution.
Yes, I ran into the same problem in GarageBand, but changing the feedback-settings at the right side, solved that problem
    Kind regards

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

If you are trying to delete some files get out of Disk Utility, it is not for that!
How did you backup and what are you trying to achieve?
