K8MM3 and Sempron 3300+, power usage

Setup (in an old box) : I am using a K8MM3-V mainboard with a Sempron 3300+ with an older power supply (for a P4 and 300W) that rates 12V at 12A, Maxtor 250G SATA HDD, RAM 512 Kingston, floppy and a DVD player.
Anyway, after booting on a Windows XP Pro disk and installing the provided SATA drivers, XP happily copies the setup files etc to the HDD and reboots (as it is supposed to).  Once the box reboots I get the XP running screen and then get the dreaded blue screen of death.  Checking the HDD with another computer shows that the HDD and data appear fine.
Previous emails to this forum with similar problems seemed to indicate that the PSU was the problem.  All the information I can find on power usage seems to be pretty vague, so after checking various web pages it appears that the Sempron uses roughly 62W which is very close to the Pentium4 1.6 (that I previously ran) at 61W.  Also, the 144A (is that correct Amps x Voltage ?) available on 12V rail should be enough, so I am stumped at where the problem could be, or have I totally missed the point on PSUs ?.  Any other clues where the problem could be ?

Try something with at least 24a on the 12v rail. A64's are notably power hungry. For that matter so are all the newer CPU's no matter what brand.

I worked in windows and used windows performance toolkit, this is used to profile the applications for its usage on cpu, power, memory and other system resources.
i think there should be some similar tool in mac os x for identifying the most power consuming applications, though there is a way to identify "Apps consuming significant energy". i want to know, which app will is using most of battery and cpu over a time among all.  so that i can avoid using them.

Try MenuMeters. It hasn't been updated for a while but works fine in Mavericks.

I have noticed that when I am using Safari and surfing through the Mapquest website, the power usage of Safari goes up to 90%. Anybody else noticing this?

I get about 40-45% CPU load here. I looked at the site's code, and it's abhorrent. The javascript is all over the place, malformed, and needs a total rewrite to even resemble something similar to reasonable (X)HTML.

  • Instantaneous notebook power usage and battery life.....

How much power do ur notebook use while doing pretty basic day to day activiites like, an open PDF, one office docx, wifi ON and downloading something, a music player minimized and singing, some 10 tabs on chrome and/or mozilla open....???
I use "Batter care" utility to find out my power usage (only when in battery), its like 7.4W to 15Watt or above...I am not sure that's a realiable tool, but  I found it gives an idea of it. Do anybody suggest anything better.,.??
Why I am asking this is that, I did a lot of driver updates lately and am afriand my power consumption have incresed by a few wats(4 or 5W)....Is it really possible..or jst my fear...??
Also, I hope the new Li-Ion based batteries needn't be cycled while using. ie I hope its not necessary to "Charge full->discharge almost completly >charge to max again" while using the devce right..??Does it hurt the battery to be charge from some random X% value to some randon y% only to discharge back to z% and so forth....??
    (x!=z!=0, y!=100 :-P)
Also will It hurt if I keep it plugged and uses while its 100% charged ..? (assuming the tempeartures are resonable)

  • Looking for a power usage app..

Seems like I have done everything I know of or could find in fourms to reduce the apps that are using up power on my iPhone 3GS.
Does anyone know of an APP that will tell me what APPS or services are using up power?
    Thanks...
    ~Charlie

    Hi Charlie,
Many misunderstand how multitasking actually works on iOS. Although you will see apps on your Multitasking tray (when you double press the home button), those are not actually running as they are in a "suspended/saved" state. Be advised that once an app is in this state, it uses virtually no battery power.
Here's an [extremely good rundown by another user of how Mutlitasking works|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12719950#12719950].
Perhaps you have worn down the battery in your phone. Battery capacity eventually degrades, but you can slow or reduce the process by following [some basic care steps|http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html].
To answer your question directly, there is no such app that will provide you with information on the power usage of another app as it would really all be zero. There are some services, such as location services, that can reduce your battery if turned on and being actively used though.

Can I take off the battery and connect the power to a backup UPS in order to make battery life longer?
I can charge it once a week.

Of course you can do this. You can remove the battery and work on AC power supply only. Be sure there is no dust on the desk and the battery place on the notebook stay clean for further usage.

flash player 11 is very glitchy on ALL browsers and makes my CPU usage 100%, making all youtube and pandora or any streaming media a headache, i have a low-end but good quality Emachine with Windows 7 Sv pk. 1, AMD Athalon Processor 2650e 1.6 GHz 2GB ram 32-bit, which isn't that bad, it used to play HD videos and everything without a skip or lag, it is virus clean, and clean of any large bulky programs, the only thing that went wrong was the fact that the adobe flash updates slowly but surely made it worse, AND it will not let me roll-back to an older version anymore like it used to, so WTF is up? no one seems to have an answer for this, and it seems like ADOBE is doing everything in it's power to not let me ask this question or get it solved, maybe it's because I AM TOO SMART FOR IT AND KNOW IT'S A FAILURE. so please, anyone who actually has a degree in this field is welcome, but no BS anymore, i want answers.

The jump to FP11 was pretty significant with Stage3D. Now Flash Player has a lower level access to your computers GPU to offload playing video and 3d rendering to the GPU. However if your systems GPU isn't up to the task you really won't see that performance gain.
Enter H264 video decoding. A large segment of the Flash usage market is simply viewing video. For sites without fallback in mind (or don't mind software rendering fallback), video may suffer. Using the GPU accelerated video classes may make it difficult for your system to view playback. Disabling hardware acceleration as recommended above would revert you back to software (CPU) decoding to check if your system itself is the issue (and not all the new GPU additions). You did that yet you're still having an issue.
Just to clarify, as I have an eMachine (for accounting), your computer is very much in the "budget" margin. You have a 3 year old single core 1.6ghz AM2 CPU with 512kb of L2. That's the K8 series. This is a very underpowered, single thread loving CPU. Only the most optimized Flash sites and lower end videos (720p or below) should play, but I'm not even sure if they'll "play well". It depends on your GPU.
Also you should know they have an official list of unsupported chipsets and drivers based on many factors. Here's a list for FP11 and AIR3:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/stage3d-unsupported-chipsets-drivers-flash.html
Check the bottom of the screen to see what Flash is reporting your rendering mode is. For example, mine states:
Your gpu supports Stage3D in both Baseline and Constrained profile!
    Baseline RenderMode:
    DirectX9
    Constrained RenderMode:
    DirectX9 (Baseline Constrained)
This probably won't get better in the future for you. Flash is not a low end multimedia runtime. It does require and utilize high end hardware in a much more reliable way.

  • Monitoring Switch Power Usage with SNMP

    Hello everyone,
I have searched high and low, and yet I am still confused as to how to do this...  Is there a uniform MIB that can be interrogated, regardless of the switching platform? Or are there specific MIB's for each switch family..?

Monitoring overall power usage may depend on platform and software.  There are MIBs such as the CISCO-ENERGYWISE-MIB (if you are using EnergyWise), CISCO-ENVMON-MIB (for voltage information), and CISCO-ENTITY-FRU-CONTROL-MIB (for volatage sensor information).

  • Why I change the energy level of port in PoE switch, the power usage of port no anyt change

I am enable the EnergyWise on a 3560, plug a IP Phone to a port, the result of the power usage read by SNMP is 6kw, when i change the energy level from 10 to 0 by SNMP, the LCD on IP Phone is goes to dark and phone cannot be use, but when I get the power usage of port by SNMP again, the result still is 6kw. Can anyone tell me why?

This project is just a short animation so every time I import the stills they are of the wrong duration so I try changing the duration by the other methods described previously, fail to be able to do that, erase everything from the project, restart and start again, initially with the preferences. So there's nothing for the still frames to conflict with. It's not the fact that there is a batch of stills that is the problem either as I keep experimenting with with single or small groups of stills in that context. I've also tried importing a variety of still formats into other projects. This is fairly new software. Could this be an incurable fault?

  • 10.4.9 increases sleep power usage from 2 to 3 watts

I installed 10.4.9 on an Intel Mac mini 1.66 GHz. After the update was installed power usage displayed by the Kill-a-Watt shows that the Mac mini now uses 3 watts in sleep mode. Before the update it used 2 watts.
Does anyone know what changed in 10.4.9 that would require more power usage in sleep mode?
    Thank you!

Based on your response, I removed all USB devices except the keyboard and tried sleep again. It was back to 2 watts. I then attached a single USB card reader and tried sleep mode again. It is still at 2 watts now. Apparently, removing the USB devices and plugging them back in after a few minutes changed the sleep mode power usage back to the old 2 watts.
Something in the 10.4.9 update seems to have impacted power usage if USB devices are connected during the update. It is nice that the power usage goes back to normal after unplugging all the USB devices.

  • Mac Pro power usage (W)

I'm looking for an UPSi for my Mac Pro. Does anyone know how much power (watts) does Mac Pro uses when it's working full CPU load? I have 8-core 3GHz with X1900 XT graphics card.

You could use APC SMART-UPS 1000VA or the RS1500VA. There are lots of threads on UPS needs and demands.
The more RAM and drives, and PCIe cards, the higher.
Power Usage of Mac Pro It requires 410 watts to start up, idles at 300 watts, and peaks at 430 watts when running Doom 3, the most demanding power wise of the ten apps we tried.
The Mac Pro had 16GB of RAM, four internal hard drives, and a Radeon X1900 XT. We're confident the Mac Pro's 980 watt power supply can handle just about everything you can do to upgrade or expand a Mac Pro.

*"CPU Max" is defined as running a compute-intensive test application that maximizes processor usage and therefore power consumption.
*These numbers reflect a 23° C (73.4° F) ambient running environment. Increased ambient temperatures will require faster fan speeds which will increase power consumption.
At 35° C (95° F), 50 W should be added to reflect increased power consumption.

    Thanks in advance.

I've been affected too and the proc -> sysfs 'reaffirmation' of sorts was my first thought.
Still my issue lies somewhere in between. Powertop simply displays wrong output, now saying my old laptop lasts around 47 hours @ 1 Watt when fully charged -- either that, or my laptop did found the key to ultimate power consumption efficiency while I was sleeping. Damn Transformer.

  • IPod Touch - Adapter Power Usage

Hi everyone. I was wondering how much power (in Watts) is required to power an iPod through a USB wall adapter. In addition, if I'm just using a USB cable from my iPod to a car power adapter, how much is power (in Watts) is required through that source? The reason I need to know this information is because I will have a Macbook Pro plugged into a car power inverter and an iPod Touch as well either through another wall adapter or through the USB port located on the power inverter. If anyone can provide some information regarding the power usage, it'll be greatly appreciated!

That's all I could find with any information about power usage. Even the specifications page mentions nothing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP496
Unless you've got one of those plug-in energy usage monitors and can test it yourself, I don't know how else you'll find out, as Apple don't seem to publish the figures.
Other links I found are these:
    http://www.apple.com/environment/resources/calculator.html
    http://www.apple.com/environment/resources/environmentalperformance.html
but nothing specific to the iPod touch there.

  • X300 power usage

    Calling all X300 users!
I'm curious what your power usage is like when on battery in Windows. I have no idea how you would measure it, but I assume there must be some software which can tell you.
For me, in Ubuntu, with Bluetooth disabled (I have no WWAN, so disable that too) with the screen fairly dim I run at about 8-9Watts, but I have no idea if that's good, bad or average.
    Post your results please!

195 cycle already, so the battery holding 75% of the original charge is about right. In Windows Lenovo power manager can recover some of the lost charges, by reconditioning the battery... but since you are not using Windows, then you would have difficulty doing the battery recondition...
basically battery recondition fully charges up your battery, then fully depletes your battery and then fully charge up your battery again, it is recommended that you do this maybe every couple of months and every 50 to 100 charge cycle.
You can do this battery recondition without the software by fully charging the battery, then fully discharging it (by disconnecting the power supply), then you can fully recharge it again.

  • Powertop shows unrealistic ACPI power usage

Hi, I just checked powertop for the wattage my laptop (Toshiba Satellite A305-6916) uses while on battery.  The reading is 2 watts, with an estimated 23 hours of battery remaining.  This is off by a factor of ten; I happen to know the power usage is closer to 20 watts, and the XFCE battery meter shows a realistic 2 hours of battery remaining.  Anyone else seeing this problem?  The last time I remember using powertop was probably a few months ago; it was working fine then.

I've updated my laptop today after a long time (3.0.x -> 3.1.5). There is a noticeable improvement in power usage.
powertop wrote:Power usage (ACPI estimate): 0.6W (96.2 hours) (long term: 4.9W,/12.5h)
My question is where is that 0.6 coming from and what does it mean? The long term numbers seem more real (currently dropped to 3.9W,/15.4h and shortly shot up to 8W and dropping again).
    Edit: acpi -b matches longterm
    Edit2: laptop is Samsung NF210
