KDE: No speller in Firefox

Hi,
I'm on an updated Arch KDE 4.3.2.
Currently (US English) speller does not work in Firefox, but does work in OO writer.
System Settings/Spell Checker shows US English as default language, but all other sub windows in the option window are blank and the Add button is greyed out.
PLease advise !
Thanks !

Firefox has it's own dictionaries. Go to any text input area --> right click --> Languages --> Add Dictionaries

  • [Solved]KDE 4.6.3/firefox 4.0.1 flashplayer crashes exiting full...

Just updated to KDE 4.6.3 today, soon thereafter I went to southparkstudios.com using firefox 4.0.1 to watch an episode. The flash video played fine but when I go to leave the video's full screen mode it crashes X and drops me at the kdm screen. I tried it repeatedly and with two different kernels, the vanilla 2.6.38.5-1 and 2.6.38.5-1-lqx, with the same exact results.
I also have an Xfce 4.8.1 setup on another set of partitions (same kernels) with exactly the same browser with exactly the same add-ons and plugins and no probs whatsoever so it looks like its related to kde somehow.
I have a bunch of these in ~/.xsession-errors too.
    plasma-desktop(1598)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0)
    plasma-desktop(1598)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0)
Couldn't really find much else as it crashes silently. Just that the xserver was terminated unexpectedly
Anyway, I know these little issues do pop up with flash from time to time. And I wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing similar issues and/or aware of any work-arounds.

Update - switching to flashplugin-beta 10.3r181 from the AUR solves the issue for me and seems to work quite well so far. And  I didn't mention, 32 bit architecture here.

  • Firefox 3.5 damn slow under KDE 4.2

    Hi Folks,
I'm using Firefox 3.5 from extra and it is so damn slow under KDE 4.2.4, compositing enabled (Intel GFX, Driver version xf86-video-intel 2.8.0 from AUR, KMS on, Kernel 2.6.30).
Furthermore I installed "extra/gtk-qt-engine 1.1-1" to get a good integration into the look&feel of KDE.
The application itself has a normal performance, but the menus are very laggy.
In addition to gtk-qt-engine I've tried "community/gtk-kde4", but that seemed to make things even worse
I think that those gtk-qt engines are to blame, but I don't know where to search for issues/problems.
Another thing is: If I say "Use my KDE style/fonts in GTK Applications" in KDE system settings dialog, Firefox looks as follows
    Whats happening here?
Is there any known trick, to get a decent performance in Firefox 3.5 under KDE 4.2?
    Best regards,
    mefiX

I just use QTCURVE as a theme, it has a native KDE3, KDE4 and GTK theme giving a constant look all around plus it is better looking then oxygen imho (especially when set to AQUA).

about performance, did you disable the Ipv6 stuff in about:config? when i used FF i noticed ipv6 dns was on by default and really slowing it down. I since switched to Opera10 which is *way* faster and has a native QT4 build instead of FF's GTK.

  • File associations not working correctly in Firefox

    Hi,
I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 on KDE 4.3.2 and have configured Firefox to open files with the "xdg-open" tool. That way you should be able to double-click on files in the download list to open them directly.
However, Firefox does not use the preferred applications I have chosen in KDE to open a specific type of file. For example it opens whaawmp instead of smplayer for video files.
When I run xdg-open from a terminal it opens the correct application. Maybe it uses Gnome settings when invoked by Firefox?
How can I fix this, so that Firefox uses my KDE file-type settings?

I don't know how to import the KDE mime-types into Firefox but...
You can change the incorrect associations for filetypes from within Firefox -- from the menu bar select 'Edit > Preferences > Applications'.  Choose the 'Content Type' you wish to change by clicking on it and a dropdown box will appear in the next column.  Then just pick the appropriate program or action.

  • Spell checker for KWrite doesn't work [SOLVED]

How do I enable spell checking for the KDE editors, i.e. KWrite, Kate, etc?  I've installed aspell via pacman, it's in /usr/bin which is in my PATH.  In KWrite's Settings>Configure Editor>Plugins, there is an option "KTextEditor KDataTool Plugin: Enable data tools like thesaurus and spell check (if installed)" which I've checked.  In another distro, that's how I enabled spell checking with aspell, i.e. by checking this box for the spell check plugin.  But in Arch this doesn't seem to be sufficient.  When I try to spell check a document in KWrite, I get this error:
"The spelling program could not be started. Please make sure you have set the correct spelling program and that it is properly configured and in your PATH."
What else do I need to do?
    Robert
EDIT: Sorry, searching this forum for "spellcheck" hadn't yielded any solution but after I posted this I also searched for "spell AND check" and found the solution: I had neglected to pick Aspell as the client for spell checking in Control Center>KDE Components>Spell Checker.

  • Flash player 9 beta FreeBSD NetBSD firefox blows

In Ubuntu I was able to install flash player 9.0.21.78 beta
and I was able to run Wubbzy in www.nickjr.com using firefox.
In NetBSD I did the same install and it started to verify it
under KDE 3.5 using firefox 1.5 at
www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ but then firefox blew up.
In FreeBSD I did the same install and it started to verify it
under KDE 3.5.5 using firefox 2.0.0.1 at
www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ but then firefox blew up.
In NetBSD and FreeBSD using flash 7.0.68.0 and 7.0.69.0
respectively the flash about test URL works fine but my daughter
can't play her Wubbzy on www.nickjr.com.

    just a follow up.
Does anyone have any idea why the beta flash player 9 can not
be installed into opera on mac intel?
Or there is something wrong with my installation?

  • Kde4 - firefox tabs (howto upload image to forum?)

    Hi.
When I 'use KDE style for gtk2' the firefox tabs look mangled  ( and ugly..)
If I choose a gk style i.e qtcurve it is fine.
Anyone know howto make the kde style work with firefox ?
Also how do I upload an image to the forum ?
    Cheers

Install gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme from AUR and use that. It works better in some apps that don't like the gtk-qt-engine (what you're using) like Firefox and OpenOffice.

  • KDE Apps not Launching in KDE

Non KDE apps such as firefox, minecraft, and lxterminal work. I'm fairly certain this problem has something to do with the homefolder because I completly reloaded arch and kde but I didn't wipe my home partition and the problem persisted until I removed and readded my user. when trying to run a kde app from LXterminal I get no output whatsover and I have to ctrl+c.
I like KDE but this is really ticking me off. Any ideas?
Edit: I've narrowed it down to the .kde4 folder. Removing it fixed the problem but I'm fairly certain it will be back.
Edit2: Its back. Please Help Me!!!

Thats the thing, when the problem occurs, I can launch non KDE apps (minecraft, firefox, etc.) from Lancelot, Kickoff or from the alt+f2 launcher, but not kde apps. I installed a non KDE terminal (LXterminal) and try to run a KDE app from their I don't get any errors or output what so ever. It just sits there until I terminate it with ctrl+c. I noticed that there are some sort of cache in ~/.kde4 could that be the problem?

  • KDE & International Languages & Spelling

I have two questions related to KDE's support of international (other than English) languages and one related to XFree86's configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
    Question 1
I have aspell/ispell dictionaries installed (other than English) but they do NOT appear in
    K -> Settings -> Control Center -> KDE Components -> Spell Checker -> Dictionary
    Only English dictionaries appear there.
In this way I do not have spelling support in KDE applications.
    Question 2
How do I add Languages in KDE?
    In
    K -> Settings -> Control Center -> Regional & Accessibility -> Country/Region & Language -> Locale -> Languages: English US -> Add Language
    only "English US" is available.
    Question 3
How do I pass the Switching Option (Policy)
    available in
    K -> Settings -> Control Center -> Regional & Accessibility -> Keyboard Layout -> Switching Options
    to the file
    /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
    Cheers!

In order to add more language to the spellchecker you have to install them
    pacman -Ss aspell
for the list of the avail dictionary package, by modifing one of the existing PKGBUILD you can easyly add your language if it is missing.
    The same for kde language
    pacman -Ss kde-i18n
this give you the list of the avail language
They are all kde 3.2.1, do not worry they work as well with 3.2.3.
If it complains about missing dependencies (for kde language) force the installation, ie
    pacman -Sf kde-i18n-it
this force the installation of the italian pack for kde.

  • [SOLVED]Problems after update do 4.3.2

Hi All. After update to newest KDE 4.3.2 on my both PCs when i start desktop enviroment i have a critical error of kdeutils-printer-applet. Does anyone experienced such a problem?
Last edited by Nixxx (2009-10-12 16:38:10)

I've got two i686 machines, one seems to be running just fine (atom-based netbook), the other (older Athlon XP) doesn't seem to run anything, I can start KDM, which in turn starts the Xserver, but it flickers like it keeps crashing, then gives up.  I can't use Xdmcp either, and I can't ssh -X tunnel KDE apps, I get this error when I try to X11 tunnel apps:
systemsettings: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZNK6Sonnet66Sonnet6
I can tunnel non-KDE apps OK like Firefox and Arora, (I tried firefox) and run start TWM, so things aren't completely dead.

  • Searching for Queries

    Hi,
once again. I did already post my qestion and got the list of tables from you.
I thought thats it and was trying to solve my problem, but the information I get from the tables below
    are useless I guess.
I would like to say in a selection screen the name of an Infoprovider, or InfoArea or the name of the query and than make a
select statement to a particular table that shows me all queries that exist in that particular infoarea for example.
In all thes tables below I couldnt really find a field InfoArea and a relation to a particular query. So many tables but i dont know how to go ahead...
But there must be a table where these information are stored!?
    Thanks

  • Searching for AUR packages with "%" queries

According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR#Searching it is possible to use mysql LIKE queries to search for a package.  But I can't find packages if I use queries with "%".
For example, when I try to search for firefox%spell or firefox%spell%, I get nothing.
I expected those queries would return the same results as firefox-spell.
The question is: do LIKE queries work (or do I use them wrong)?

  • Partition Size Comparison of /usr Versus /opt?

I'm a fairly new user of linux, and have been on Ubuntu for awhile now.  I've lately found it limiting for what I want to do, and like what I've read about Arch. I would like to do a clean install on a machine that has a 80 GB hard drive, and am trying to figure out partitions.
I've heard that Arch likes to install many programs (as it should) in the /opt directory, and others default to the more commonplace /usr.  I'm wondering what amount of space I should allocate to each of thier individual partitions.  As of now, I planned on doing something like this:
    disc1 ext2 128 MB /boot
    disc5 ReiserFS 384 MB /
    disc6 swap 1536 MB
    disc7 ReiserFS 8192 MB /usr
    disc8 ReiserFS 8192 MB /opt
    disc9 ReiserFS 4096 MB /var
    disc10 ReiserFS ... /home
I was wondering if anyone knew the approximate proportion of progams installed in /usr versus those installed in /opt, and what size they typically should be?  (I do realize I'm giving each section some overhead, but I'd rather be safe than sorry)  Thanks in advance...

well.... personally I wouldn't separate them, as the partitions should really be logically seperate (/home makes sense as it carries settings over from install to install, /var can change rapidly, /boot runs the machine).  However, I think some people do use seperate partitions for /usr and /opt.
The larger, comprehensive packages are installed to /opt - kde, gnome, xfce, mozilla, firefox, and some others - this probably won't get *that* far beyond that... I'd say at the very maximum ever it'd be around 4-5 GB.
As for your partition layout, it has some issues.  your /home partition probably won't get that big - it's usually filled with config files, and possibly music files (I keep my music in a seperate partition, which is like 80% full ATM).  More important is your "/" and "/usr" partitions - these should take up a majority of your drive....
    my partitions look like this:
    hda1 : /home/music 15GB
    hda2 : /boot 50MB
    hda3 : swap 1GB
    hda4 : /home 4GB
    hda4 : / ~40GB
that way there's no need to worry about what size /usr and /opt should be.
I'd suggest maxing out the "/" partition, as then you won't need to worry about space for /usr and things like that

  • Kde4 configuration files problem ... [solved]

This is what's going on: I start the kde session (I log in as user via kdm) and everything seems to be fine ...for a while! Then suddenly I'm starting to get messages such as "Configuration file /home/tbuta/.kde4/share/config/konquerorrc" not writable for just about everything I try to open - dolphin, konqueror, konsole, ksysguard, etc
I checked the permissions and everything seems fine - the files and folders are still owned by the user/group
Anyway, I tried a sudo chown -R for the user home folder and I'm getting a "chown: changing ownership of `/home/tbuta': Read-only file system". So I'm thinking if as I said above, the file permissions are actually ok, and I'm getting a "Read-only file system" when I'm trying to chown, it seems to me that somehow the home folder becomes read only in the middle of my kde session?? It's getting exasperating ... if I can't fix this soon, I'm afraid I'll have to leave kde for now ...

This is REALLY annoying - the problem is back ... I just don't understand what's causing it.
Another thing I noticed is that now for some "non-pure-kde" apps such as firefox, skype - if they were open and then closed, when I try to reopen them again I'm getting a message that an istance is already running (although I can't see any firefox or skype, etc via ksysguard - and a killall command gives me the "no process killed message"...)
Also, when the problems start, if I try to log out of kde and log back in - it won't let me. Once I log out I can't log back in - it gets stuck on the kde splash screen. Trying to restart kdm will also fail. However, if I reboot the computer, I can log in as usual and work for a while .... until everything goes crazy again!
The only other problem I noticed is that there seems to be something wrong with preload. And a /etc/rc.d/preload restart always has somehow "strange" results. Could the two be related?

  • Is Arch falling behind?

The Frugalware Developer Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Frugalware 0.4 for the i686 and x86_64 architectures, our fourth stable release.
A short and incomplete list of changes since 0.4rc2-i686:
    * Updates:
    o Update to Linux 2.6.16
    o Update to GNOME 2.14
    o Update to OpenOffice.org 2.0.2.1
    o Lots of minor bugfixes
o Create a howto about upgrading from the previous stable release
    * A few statistics since 0.3:
    o 4186 changes
    o 732 new packages
    o 302 fixed bugs
    * For who haven't followed the changes in the pre/rc releases, the most important changes:
o Implemented fwcpan, a new tool to install any cpan module, just like it would when you install it with pacman.
o Split OpenOffice, now all language packs and dictionaries can be installed/removed separately.
o Libificated pacman to meet our needs, and the newborn pacman 3 has become the default package manager.
o Network configuration has been redesigned, now we support various network profiles, and many more network parameters (hardware address, multiple ip addresses on a single interface, etc) than before.
o Created a new, more verbose documentation.
o Switched to udev as the default hotplug multiplexer.
o Bugfix: now automounting for usb sticks works fine, not only for CDs or DVDs.
    o Added package splitting support.
o Started to work on a PPC port.
o Rewritten setup from scratch in C. The new framework will allow to implement a graphical installer, too.
o The init script system was redesigned: more user-friendly error messages, now uses gettext for translations.
    o Modularized Xorg 7.0, Apache 2.2.0, KDE 3.5.1, Firefox 1.5.0.1, Thunderbird 1.5
Please refer to the Frugalware Stable ChangeLog for more information.
    Download for i686: netinstall (19M), cd1 (490M), cd2 (604M), dvd (3.5G)
    Download for x86_64: netinstall (19M), dvd (2.5G)
    Torrents also available.

Puh. They are less developers. But they're much faster and have almost everything included we are waiting for.
What's up with arch? Are we going to loose the bleading edge state :?:

AndyRTR wrote:We don't have support for multiple architectures. Even not in testing. Nobody cares except Xentac.
I care. I'd like to see an x86-64 port. I'd be willing to work on it with you. Is there a todo list anywhere? Anything specific to work on?
We don't have a source build OpenOffice. Some packages take too much time before they get updated even if it is not much work to do(krusader is the last example).
Which is maintained by JGC who happens to have GCC, Glibc, Xorg, GTK2 and gstreamer. Sometimes things have to be prioritised. Krusader doesnt have a higher priority than those. To be fair, a majority of Arch's packages, are updated frequently, and those that arent are in the minority.
For me it loooks that big packages stay quiet long in testing. Is arch becoming more conservative?
    Unfortunately it most certainly is.
But it's not the developers... It's the users.
Daily I see posts about people wanting to holdpkg or ignorepkg or whatever xorg, and kernel and udev and other things like that.
The users are becoming conservative. The users dont use testing. So yeah, thats why theres a lot in testing, Nobody tests testing, and then we have to push it out and hope it doesnt mess up too many systems.
raskolnikov: our extra is meant to be stable, but bugs creep in because users dont test.....catch 22!
And running arch not having latest pacman is strange. Isn't it?
    Not really.
