Keen for suggestions on a JMS impl that meets these requirements...

Hi All
We have hit some glitches with a set of geophysical migration jobs we are doing on a server cluster. I have been asked to distribute some of the work amongst several servers in the cluster (the current distribution mechanism is not working out) and need some mechanism for messaging between the jobs.
The guys here are quite keen to get something up quickly for the moment and I have suggested we might be able to use a lightweight JMS implementation for starters.
Could anyone suggest one that meets the following criteria?
- Reliable
- Fast
- Easy learning curve (as we are on a tight deadline).
- Supports guaranteed delivery
- Easy to develop with (ie junit friendly)
- OpenSource
- Works on linux
We can make the following concessions...
- Point to point only required at the moment
- No need for fancy configuration front ends
- No immediate scaling requirements.
Thanks

I'm completely biased, but ActiveMQ seems to fit the bill perfectly

I am using my old iPhone for playlist for my Dad's funeral as that meets the crematorium requirements. Some tracks - uploaded from personal CDs to MacBook Pro and successfully transferred to new iPhone (with small doc) won't transfer on syncing.  Most do, but why won't some, of my own music sync when others off the same album and in the same playlist do? I have now checked the storage, freed up 766MB, how can i not sync (and get everything i've just deleted back) but upload the required tunes? All help appreciated, many thanks x x x

maybe this post by Zevoneer helps.
I don’t want to hear any of that “iTunes will let you re-download anything you’ve lost” nonsense.
it won't anyways. except or apps, you are entitled to one download only. there4 it is important to back up.

  • Looking for Camcorder or Video Recording DSLR That Meets Detailed Needs

I do apologise for asking a question that may have been answered but whose answer I have not been able to find. I think once you read my requirements you may understand why.
I am looking at being able to take video of places I go to. In the past I have used my semi pro camera system to take photos and to make movies from these with added music. Over time I am wishing that I had also taken a camcorder to record those memorable occasions which are fading in my mind.
I am looking for a camera that will meet the following requirements: -
    1. HD 720P (do not like interlaced)
    2. Final Cut Express editable
3/ Probably want flash memory (internal/external or external). Reason for this is that camera will be taken around in light aircraft, helicopters, 4 wheel drive vehicles, through desert, jungle, bush as well as normal circumstances.
4/ Want 720P or 1080P (1080P unlikely except in pro camera).
5/ Want to be able to use filters on camcorder lens.
6/ I like a proper view finder (but I wear glasses) as quite often in bright light external screens are not visible. But I also want to have a separate, rotatable screen for hip level and above head level filming. Must be bright enough to view in desert sunlight.
7/ Wish to be able to add a omnidirectional stereo mike or, a unidirectional mike.
8/ Either have a battery that allows for about eight hours recording a day, or have a swappable battery option.
9/ Be able to record in low light situations (in side cathedrals, cave entrances, sun set and sun rise)
10/ Be capable of being able to record wildlife at distances of up to 500 metres or more. I do not like digital zoom, preferring to use optical zoom.
11/ Being able to record fast moving objects (cheetahs to aircraft)
12/ Being able to transfer data to a backup storage device whilst travelling. This may not be feasible.
13/ Being able to play back what has been recorded to review all.
Now here is a problem. I am limited in budget (approximately £1200 to £1500), and also do not enjoy carrying suitcases around with me. Suitcases go missing an awful lot. I tend to travel with a carry on bag weighing up to 12 kg (including camera system & backup device).
If there were a digital SLR camera I might go for something like that (e.g. Panasonic DMC-GH1). Problem with this camera is that it records in AVCHD at the top levels and at Motion JPEG for 720p and below. The GH1 wraps its 24 fps movies in an interlaced 60 fps file. It is possible to use the Motion JPEG codec, though you have to drop the resolution to 1280 x 720 (at 30 fps), and deal with a 2GB file size limit. Would love to use my existing Nikkor lenses, but again not necessary.
I do understand I am unlikely to get such a system in my price range, but what is the closest system on the market, or coming soon that meets my requirements (whether DSLR with video or Camcorder which means I still carry my DSLR).
Thank you very much for taking the time to read all this.

    Evening Tom,
Thanks for your response. What I am able to tell you about the Panasonic DMC-GH1 is: -
It can record full high definition motion pictures compatable with the AVCHD format or motion pictures recorded in Motion JPEG.
Audio will be recorded in stereo and Dolby Digital Stereo Creator format.
In AVCHD there are a number of possible settings. In all cases the aspect ratio is 16:9.
1/ FHD = 1920 x 1080 pixels, 17 Mbps, 50 frames per second interlaced (sensor output is at 25 fps)
    2/ SH = 1280 x 720 pixels, 17 Mbs, 50 frames per second progressive (sensor output is 50 fps)
    3/ H = 1280k720 pixels, 13 Mbps, 50 frames per second progressive (sensor output is 50 fps)
    4/ L = 1280k720 pixels, 9 Mbps, 50 frames per second progressive (sensor output is 50 fps)
In Motion JPEG the possible settings are
    1/ HD = 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps and an aspect ration of 16:9
    2/ WVGA = 848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps and an aspect ration of 16:9
    3/ VGA = 640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps and an aspect ratio of 4:3
    4/ QVGA = 320 x 240 pixels at 30 fps and an aspect ratio of 4:3
AVCHD Movies can be recorded continuously for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds. Motion picture recorded continuously in MOTION JPEG the limit is up to 2 GB (approximately 8m 20 seconds) in any one scene.
    Regards,
    Hval

  • Looking for a pdf reader which meets these requirements

I am looking for a pdf reader which meets these requirements:
1- Open pdf starting from last page opened during last session
2- Be able to scroll between pages vertically (not horizontally like many current ones do). Vertical scroll should be a continuous smooth scroll without doing a sudden full page pull in. Should behave as if pdf is one single very long page.
3- Should be able to change width of page and lock it. Page should not move sideways. Page width should be remembered so when same pdf is opened, it opens in that width.
4- A fast scroll feature. Useful for pdf's with hundreds of pages.
5- Nice to have feature: when opening the pdf reader, it automatically opens the last pdf file on the last page read.
I have tried all the free pdf readers in the AppStore and none met all these requirements except for two which had these issues:
1- iRead limitation: When screen is touched for more than a second, the page is frozen (locked) and page can't be scrolled. Scrolling is done when doing quick swipes only
2- FileApp limitation: Does not remember last page opened. Does not remember last width set. Fast scroll doesn't work properly when width is other than default.

    iAnnotate additional points
iAnnotate works with DropBox to download and upload edited PDFs. It does all the other same things, email, USB, and iTunes etc. but it also can download PDFs from any web site.
You can transfer hundreds if not thousands of files at one whack using the AIJ Utility on your desktop.
If you transfer a large number of files you have to plan not to use iAnnotate a while as it has an index function that indexes all the text into a master 'dictionary' so it can do searches for data and find PDFs for you. This indexing takes hours if you transfer hundreds of moderate size PDFs at one time.
The biggest PDF I have feed it was a Gimp manual at close to a thousand pages.
Remember the scratch pad ram is only 256 MB in the current iPad. You can cash iAnnotate if you do something really dumb with such a large file. Other applications also grab and hold onto chunks of this ram in the iPad so it is best to force a memory reset before doing anything that is going to max out that ram.
iAnnotate allows you to have more than one PDF open at a time and you can tab between all the open PDFs in a blink just as you would in a tabbed web browser.
If you zoom a page larger than the width of the screen it slides around. Less than the width of the screen the page locks in the size while scrolling which is smooth between pages.
iAnnotate is a very well made product for dealing with PDFs. Annotations display in Goodreader and in the Mac OS Preview.

  • ERD software that meets these needs?

I'm looking for ERD software that meets the following criteria. I've been using JDeveloper but finding it lacking in these areas. Perhaps someone can enlighten me with a hidden setting to solve any of these?
    1. I have made an ERD for my database, but a year has passed and it needs to be updated: I want to import the changes in such a way that neither the relative locations of the tables nor the lines are moved. I've been using Oracle JDeveloper, this is fine for tables but my lines turn to spaghetti and I have to re-position all of them whenever I sych changes from the DB.
    2. Can add text to the diagram, like a title and date, and can draw shapes on the diagram, like a rectangle around a group of tables to highlight that they are related. (I didn't find this in JDeveloper, so I was importing the document into Adobe Illustrator to add text and other shapes.)
    3. saves correctly in .svg (open source vector format). If I recall correctly, JDeveloper will save in .svg but each time I tried it was a dirty/malformatted write such that other .svg readers couldn't open it correctly. Adobe Illustrator is pretty smart, so it could open it, but I couldn't view it in Firefox with the svg viewer add-on.
    Thanks!

    Gene,
    1. JDeveloper does not support pure ERD logical modeling. However, as you say you want to synch from the database I take it you are wanting to work at the physical level. Having said that, in the latest release of JDeveloper you can do ERD/logical modeling using a UML Class diagram and then 'transform' that to a physical model.
    2. Unfortunately, the lines will not remain in the same position if you move the tables. If you are synching the physical model from the database one way to minimise the disruption to the lines would be to update the objects in the application navigator. This will update the existing objects in your diagram when you open the diagram - but it should not reposition the tables already on the diagram too much. then you can add any new tables to the diagram and you will have to position them.
    3. Use the Note drawing component to add text and labels and use the Group to group elements (both of these are found in Diagram Annotations (an accordion in the Component Palette). These are here because our database diagrammer is also based on UML diagram framework
    4. I am not aware of any problems with the .svg format. But I would suggest trying the latest release of JDeveloper to see if any problems you encountered a year ago are now gone. Please let me know if you still experience problems
    5. In the latest release you will also find new reporting facilities for database models. New - Offline database - reports and prebuilt-reports will allow you to report using a SQL interface on your elements and produce HTML documents of these
Generally, we have made great progress on database modeling in the last couple of releases.

  • I have a Mac 10.5.8, but even though that meets system requirements, firefox is telling me Firefox 4 is incompatible. what gives?

    there are no other details!

The part you missed is the need for '''Intel''' hardware as you have a PPC. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/8.0/system-requirements/
As of Firefox 4.0 and newer only the Intel is supported as the PPC was dropped and 64-bit was put in place with the 32-bit version.
For PPC Macs there is two options. Either you can use the current 3.6.* version from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html which you have.
Or you can try a third-party version of Firefox 8.0 from http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
However do see http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported if you use this version.

  • S5200UK more than meets Min Requirements for Win7 but slow and CPU peeking at 100% during IE or NIS

Hi everyone! Previously my S5200UK was upgraded from 1GB RAM to 2GB with a newer BIOS of V3.21
    (See  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/Can-I-increase-RAM-size-if-I-upgrade-the-BIOS/m-p/1302... )
Thanks to Paul Tikkanen's help then I got the machine working fabulously but thanks to Microsoft's decommisioning of XP I decided to upgade to Windows 7 professional. The minimum requirements are 1GHz CPU and 1GB RAM. My AMD CPU is 2.08GHz but its performance is 2.6GHz equivalent. The RAM is 2GB and I have upgraded the HDD to a new Seagate SSHD SATA 1TB hybrid (with 8GB SSD incorporated). I used the exact drive on another machine a dx2000mt and WOW what a difference to boot speed (30sec) 1min with programs installed and data restored. (and that is usable desktop). I also fitted the  ATI Radeon 9600 LE 128 MB AGP graphics card as recommended by Paul and a new 500W supply. I did not expect any problems as the 7 upgrade (clean install) on the dx2000mt went like a dream. Anyhow, this is the problem. After installing windows, all the updates and Norton Internet Security (NIS) the machine uses 100% processor and 25% RAM as I attempt to open NIS or use Internet Explorer. I can hear the CPU fan speed up every time it executes any small task and CPU shoots to 100%. With opening NIS there are two nis.exe processes using 50% CPU each! Any small demand of a program results in ultra slow operation. I put Win 7 on my old laptop with 1.5GHz CPU and 2GB RAM and that is great! I cannot believe that this S5200UK machine is limited by the CPU or RAM  as it more that meets the requirements. I have obviously installed drivers (most came with Windows 7 and the others from a driver update program). There are no warnings or conflicts in the Device Manager and I have tried reinstalling everything again twice but it is always the same. I even tried changing the HDD to an IDE 80GB 7200rpm one but it was even slower! I also tried removing the graphics card but no change.Oddly I ran a performance test progam and, other than the memory, it came out better that the dx2000mt!!!! Has anyone got any suggestions as to what is causing this?
PS: The o/s is OEM for refurbished pcs on genuine hologram disk (no service pack but this was done via Windows Update) I will be very grateful if anyone out there can save my bacon. Thanks.

    Hi:
The only recommendation I can offer based on what you have posted, would be to ditch the Norton Internet Security software and just run it with Microsoft Security Essentials.
That free antivirus/antimalware software uses very few system resources.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201
You would also need to use the Norton uninstall tool to make sure it cleans out all traces of the program.

  • I've just hooked my 20" iMac up to my Toshiba 37" HDTV using a mini dvi-HDMI adapter, and works well, EXCEPT for the green tinge (or hue) that is showing up on my TV. Any suggestions or ideas?

I've just hooked my 20" iMac display up to my Toshiba 37" HDTV using a mini dvi-HDMI adapter, and everything works well, EXCEPT for the green tinge (or hue) that is showing up. Everything else looks pretty good though..... The color that is on my iMac is still good, Its just green on the TV.
    Anyone have suggestions or ideas?

Try opening the Display System Preferences, then click on the Color options in the Display preferences window that appeared on the Toshiba display. Click on the Calibrate button and follow the instructions for creating a custom ColorSync profile that will hopefully solve the green tinge issue. The Apple Display Calibrator Assistant software that launches when you click on the calibrate button will walk you through the process.Assuming that the green tinge is minor and that you don't have a more serious cable or hardware issue, I am hopeful the results will be worth it.

On my Macbook pro 15, 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

That is correct. The tech specs indicate:

    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
    Optical Drive Interface
3.0 or 6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)

The MTS files will always be grayed out. Do not drill down into the folder structure. Select the top level of the AVCHD folder structure. If this is a hard drive it may take a very long time to load. People have reported 20 minutes to half an hour.
Other possible problems, conflicts with other software like Perian. Also if there is mixed media on the drive; media in different formats can make the directory unreadable. What are the exact specifications of your media? What settings are you using in FCE?

Set delivery mode to PERSISTENT for JMS destinations that have durable set to true. If messages aren't persistent they won't be saved by the JMS server. This is kind of important when you want the messages to be durable.
    Modified Paths:
        blazeds/trunk/qa/apps/qa-regress/WEB-INF/flex/messaging-config.mods.xml

According to Bea Customer Support this is the normal behavior. If you kill a durable topic subscriber and reconnect it with the same id to another node, the old subscription is deleted and all messages still waiting to be delivered are gone.
Lesson learned: If you need failover for the server AND client use JMS queues.
