Kernal_task issue

Hi all
I have a performance issue, and kernal_task, as monitored in Activity Monitor, seems to be the culprit.  Unlike other examples on this site, however, rather than saying 100% of CPU usage, I get interesting figures like 602.5%:
In addition, this is a cyclical thing, and it goes down to quite normal levels on its own, then back again, without opening or closing documents, applications, or having obvious background events like printing or Time Machine going on (although in this case Terminal was running in normal example and not in the abnormal one, it really does it on its own very often, with no input or action from me):
So I've done the "Five step" procedure, and this is what was returned:
Step 1:

Other threads have suggested audio-related items as the source, but I've had no success yet.  Any ideas?  Thanks very much...

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Having trouble with kernal_task, fan, overheating, and lag issues with my Macbook Pro. What should I do?

I've had this problem with my Macbook Pro for the past few months. I am starting to become increasing dissatisfied with this product since it's less than even a year old and going through so many problems. I've taken at least 10 trips to the Apple Genius Bar in the past year.
    I've had issues with
    1) erratic trackpad
    2) wifi connection timeouts
    3) kernal_task taking up 300% of my CPU, my fan become crazy and just having my laptop lag to the point where I can't even use it.
I sent in my laptop for repairs last week again and they replaced my logic board and some other things. I recieved my laptop back yesterday, but I'm finding the same exact problem is happening again this morning. I still have warranty and set up another appointment for a few days... but the amount of trips I've taken is really starting to irritate me and my problem still isn't solved. What should I do? Is there another way to solve this or should I just keep going back to Genius Bar...
I regret buying this laptop. =\ It was so expensive but yet has so many problems. I've never had to deal with anything this cumbersome with my past few laptops.

If you've taken it back for the same problems over and over again, I suggest that you start asking for a replacement. Ensure that you've backed everything up to an ext HD and removed your personal data and information. IIRC, repeating problems warrant a replacement.

  • Our MacbookPro began running very slow a few days ago. I ran disk repair, permissions repair, and restored the OS from the Apple server. Kernal_Task appears to be using excessive CPU.

I uninstalled all of the Intego products. I restarted the laptop, also ran disk repair and permissions repair again. Then allowed the machine to run with no apps active, just in case the OS was perfroming cleanup funtions. Results: No discernible improvement in performance. The kernal_task shows 500+% and the CPU graph shows 70%-80%.
There is one hardware issue: The magsafe battery port stopped charging the battery, so the laptop must be plugged in all the time.

  • 10.5.7 causes MacBook Air kernal_task to run at 135%

Installed the update of 10.5.7 a few days ago and I was crossing my fingers that nothing would break (since the system was running perfectly with low kernal_task usage after months of trying to get it down due to core shutdowns, etc.), but now, the kernal_task problem is back.
I have activity monitor on and there isn't any core shutdown, just that if I have anything running for any given amount of time, eventually kernal task just rises to hog up all free cycles, up to 130-135%.
It doesn't seem like the system is idling either, because the mouse gets sluggish and jumpy, and the system is almost impossible to work with.
I've applied the combo updater for 10.5.7, and I've run a permissions repair, none of which helps. I did not do a time machine backup when it was all working fine in 10.5.6, and I'm not too keen on having to reinstall the operating system and lose all my installed applications... any suggestions as to what it could be?

OK so now we have at leas 6 people experiencing the same issue. Can I recommend that you all provide feedback to apple via the following the following feedback page.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/, choose your product and fill in the details
    or
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookair.html
    and fill in the details.
As I understand it Apple don't read these Discussions Forums. They merely host them. All answers and assistance is provided by peer support through like minded enthusiasts who simply want to help as best they can.

  • MacBook Pro w 16GB & SSD slow; kernal_task using 4GB

I've got processor and memory issues with my MacBook Pro. I have 16GB of memory and an SSD drive.
Kernal_Task routinely uses 3 or 4GB of memory. And lots of times, various apps are pegging the processor, and my fans go crazy. Kernal_Task and WindowServer are the ones sys related that seem to show up most in Activity monitor for large processor usage. Especially WindowServer.
System used to scream. Something seems to have gone wrong.
I tried to delete the plist file named for my OS version in down in Library/extensions and in the contents of ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext under resources as per several posts here, but my system doesn't have that file.
Here's my EntreCheck report, I'd love any help or ideas.

  • Kernal_task running at 450% of CPU

    Hey everyone-
So the old Kernal_task taking up CPU problem.
I have read many posts about this!
I tried to uninstall the google updater- that seemed to work, but now I am VJing it does not work-
My kernel gets exited and just SWALLOWs my CPU- and I will suppress any double entendres right there...
really hoping to avoid a clean install of my system- though that may be the only option!
Unless smarty mac GURUs can help me here!

This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Kernal_task consuming HUGE amounts of CPU in Mavericks

Alright, so I know this is a problem that has seemed to baffle the community at times before, and i've seen problems somewhat similar to this before, but still searcing desperately for an answer. To be honest, I wasn't sure if this had been happening before i updated to mavericks, but I noticed some less than optimal performance before updating to mavericks so it might have been happening yet only on a smaller scale.
Basically here is the issue: If my computer is freshly restarted and I am doing very light browsing and such my computer seems to work totally as normal. Very very fast, snappy, no bouncing icons, hangups, etc. Not all the time, but on a quite frequent basis, whenever I start to do anything CPU intensive, my computer will go into crazy mode and absolutely become bogged down and literally un-usable. If I am even able to open activity monitor (sometimes even this would take 20 seconds or so when its having this error) and I can see that kernal_task always shoots to the top of CPU usage and is displaying as taking up anywhere generally from 550-650% of CPU Usage (not sure how thats even possible) and under system usage towards the bottom of activity monitor will say anywhere from 75-90% of overall CPU Usage.
Here is a screenshot which shows this phenomenon:
This can happen when i barely have any programs open, or when i'm doign something actually quite streessing on the CPU. The worst culprits seem to be Youtube videos, editing in final cut pro, it happened today during editing a photo in Aperture, its happened using Logic, and even just streaming audio from a flash player in Chrome. It makes the computer really un-usable to reliably work on anything that uses really any decent amount of CPU usage, because I have to constantly be restarting, and when this kernal_task ramps up, I usually can't even really open up apps, and God forbid if I tried to export a video or do anything that takes alot of CPU while this is happening, it would take forever to complete when the CPU is already consumed with this problem.
This problem was happening VERY bad seemingly after I updated to mavericks, and after finally enough I decided to fully wipe my hard drive (after backing up the files i needed and offloading them to an external) using the guide apple provides, totally reformatting the drive and re-setting it up as a startup hard drive and re-installing mavericks on it.
I did NOT restore from a time machine backup when I finally got my computer back up and running with a fresh copy on it, and I didn't really import many files at all. I wanted to start essentially totally fresh.
It seemed like right away it was doing it again, and I couldn't seem to find any consistency to when it would do it and when not. I've seen many people on the internet seem to think its some sort of audio .kext problem, but it hasn't seem to mattered if I have headphones plugged in or not. I even tried the fix where you install the 10.85 (I think it is) audio .kext to try and remedy that but no change from what i've seen.
The ONLY thing that fixes this problem when its going on for me is to restart, and alot of the times oddly enough if I do a normal restart by going to the apple menu and pressing restart (and no i'm not even re-opening the apps I had open when restarting) or shut down it wont' start up properly and will take quite a while to restart and will load my desktop very slowly. The only way i've found is to hold my Mac Retina power button to force a manual restart, and when I do that, finally it will start up totally normal like nothing happened (until the next time it does it of course).
    I'm stumped.
I've verified my disk, repaired permissions, ran memory testers, tried resetting the ram using all the ways possible, tried eliminating my apps to the very bare minimum I need to get my work done and still stumped.
Here is a screenshot of my computer stats for reference:
One interesting thing is my computer has seemed to freeze when doing the apple hardware test (restarting then hold D and select language and run the test). It will get about 20 seconds elapsed on the dialogue readout and then just hang there for the longest time and eventually I just have to force restart to get it outta there.
Clearly this shouldn't be happening, and when my computer is working properly is it very fast.
I took it to a genius bar and told them everything and they ran some hardware tests real quick and nothing showed up, but he booted off of an external drive it looked like, and he said he saw the problem somewhat coming up then too (although when he booted off that drive the kernal_task was only like 30% in activity monitor I think but still he saw that obviously and acknowledged that it was abnormal.
They wanted to hold the computer for 3-5 days which just isn't really easy for me to do when I edit videos for my job and am nearing finals week in school.
    Any ideas?

Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Why does my Kernal_Task run so high when I first start up the computer

Okay...I recently found out that my macbook pro 13in late 2011, main problem is my Kernal_Task......I notice it started happening this past Saturday. Everytime I put it to sleep, my CPU kernal_task runs high of 204-396% which is not normal. Then my fans kick on afterward.....it does the same thing when I properly shut down the computer and start it back up again, with nothing running or open. I did the Disk Utilty of Repair Disk Premissions, and still it is an on going issue with the kernal_task. And before all this happened, I never had a problem of putting my macbook to sleep at night, and wake it up the next day. Sometimes, I don't shutdown until 3 or 4 weeks at time....but now, since my kernal_task is acting up, I was told I now have to shut it down when I am not using it, like a PC machine. Can anyone here give me suggestions to sovle the kernal_task problem, of having it go back to normal use at 2-5% of CPU use, instead of 204-396% of CPU use....I am hitting a wall and want to find out if I have to reinstall OS X Lion or not...
    Thanks...

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to

The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
    Installed software

You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode. Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    Peripherals
Connecting an external display to some MacBook Pro models via Thunderbolt may cause this issue. I don't know of a fix, other than to disconnect the display.
    Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.

  • Kernal_task 100% after wake up

hello my mbp battery went bad after i noticed that kernal_task using 100% of one of cpu core, that usually happens after it wake up from sleep. i searched for solutions but the problems still occoured so is this a bug of maverick? or did apple say anything about this? n other effective solution? thx

I'm not seeing anything, besides kernal_task, that is out of the ordinary.
Spotlight will show a dot in the center of the magnifying glass in your toolbar. If you click the magnifying glass, it will display information about how far along in the indexing process (if it is indeed indexing. If it isn't indexing, it will only display the search field)
I posited bad RAM because that might cause issues. I doubt it though. How large is your internal drive? At this point, I feel it has something to do with a bad migration. I would try to add a 2nd partition to your boot drive and do a clean install of Leopard on it (minimum install, you don't need to install printers, etc.) If your drive is large enough (at least 15 GB free), launch Disk Utility and select your boot disk (not volume, the boot disk will have some numbers beside it and not Macintosh HD.) Next click on the Partition Tab. On the left side of the Partition tab there is a graphic for the Volume Scheme, click on the little '+' sign on the lower left. You can drag the slider in the middle of the graphic to size the 2nd partition. Click Apply. Proceed to install OS X from your install disks to this 2nd partition. If the system performs normally on this 2nd partition, we know your primary OS has something in it that is causing problems. If it behaves the same as the primary, we probably have a hardware issue (I doubt this.) If the 2nd system works properly, I would get an external hard drive, clone your boot drive to the external using either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! (Boot the external clone to make sure it works) Re-partition and Erase your internal drive and do a clean install on your internal. You can then try to migrate your settings from the external at this point.
    Let me know...

  • Kernal_task HELP ME PLEASE

my mac randomly started acting up (lagging, freezing) whilst i was playing 'the sims 3' so i quit the program and restarted my Macbookpro. It then took 10 minutes to turn on, in the activity monitor there is somthing called kernal_task and it is running at 135%, i have read up on the issue for the last 8 hours online and its driving me insane right now. Please if anyone knows of a fix, help me.
I have tried most of the fix's that i have found online and had no luck.
    Thank you for your time,
    James Hodge.

  • Kernal_task process

    Hi ,
I am using Xserve - Dual-Core Intel Xeon (10.5.4). There is slowness issue in my server , after checking the process in Activity Monitor one Kernal_task process is taking 55% of my CPU load . As I have also installed the apache . After stopping the apache the CPU process goes normal to 0.8 % , and starting apaches again take CPU load to 55%.
So what could be the problem any hints please.

    First guess, memory.
Amongst a slew of other things, the kernel is responsible for memory handling, including virtual memory, so if you're out of memory this could explain it.
You should also look at other processes that are related to the webserver, such as tomcat if you're running java web applications, databases if you're using dynamic content, etc.
Then there's always the logs - /var/log/system.log would be the one I'd start with. It's usually pretty good about recording system-level events that might be relevant.

For those that have looked at this post... I may have found the remedy to my issue.
I spoke with Apple Support and we went through the normal proceedure:
    1) Run Disk Utilities...check
    2) Delete cache files, reboot
The machine was still running high unless I disconected the ThunderBolt Monitor... it would then run normal. If I plugged it back in, eventually the kernal_task would go extremely high.
So, a thought came to mind,
    I had recently purchased a 27" iMac with a second 27" monitor,
So in talking with Apple we decided that changing out the monitor to the "new" 27" one would at lease confirm that the monitor is not the issue.
When I changed it out... my MBP worked perfectly!
Here is where it gets interesting...
I ran the MBP with the "new" monitor for enough time that it should have spiked the Kernal_Task. It didn't.
I then, because of the set up, disconected the "new" monitor and reconected the "original" monitor,
It has been over 24 hours now and the MBP has NOT had any Kernal_task spikes at all!!
So, at lease for me, the issue seems to be solved.
Now, I would like to know why.
Could connecting the "new" monitor have changed a setting that was corrupt within the MBP?
    Anyone with any ideas?

  • Airport/CPU issues

Hi. I just got a new PB15 and have horrible problems with my airport. Every few hours, my CPU spikes on kernal_task and my airport connection drops. The only fix is to restart. I have heard this is a known issue with more than 1GB of RAM in the machine. Is there a fix for this? This is a bad problem...

Make sure you have the latest Airport firmware version. SystemProfiler>Airport. It should be version 404.2. If not then trash the 'Airport SW.pkg' file in /Library/Receipts folder and apply the stand alone Airport update.

  • New DVR Issues (First Run, Channel Switching, etc.)

I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to find answers through the search with no luck, so sorry if I missed something.
I recently switched to FIOS from RCN cable in New York.  I've gone through trying to setup my DVR and am running into issues and was hoping for some answers.
    1.  I setup two programs to record at 8PM, I was watching another channel at the time and only half paying attention.  Around 8:02 I noticed a message had popped up asking if I would like to switch channels to start recording.  I was expecting it to force it to switch like my old DVR, but in this case it didn't switch and I missed the first two minutes of one of the shows.  I typically leave my DVR on all day and just turn off the TV, this dual show handling will cause issues with that if I forget to turn off the DVR.  Is there a setting I can change that will force the DVR to choose one of the recording channels?
    2.  I setup all my recordings for "First Run" because I only want to see the new episodes.  One show I setup was The Daily Show on comedy central, which is shown weeknights at 11pm and repeated 3-4 times throughout the day.  My scheduled recordings is showing all these as planned recordings even though only the 11pm show is really "new".  Most of the shows I've setup are once a week so they aren't a problem, but this seems like it will quickly fill my DVR.  Any fixes?
    Thanks for the help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I came from RCN about a year ago.  Fios is different in several ways, not all of them desirable.  Here are several ways to get--and fix--unwanted recordings from a series recording setup.
    Some general principles.
Saving changes.  When you originally create a series with options, or if you go back to edit the options for an existing series, You MUST save the Series Options changes.  Pretty much everywhere else in the user interface, when you change an option, the change takes effect immediately--but not in Series Options.  Look at the Series Options window.  Look at the far right side.  There is a vertical "Save" bar, which you must navigate to and click OK on to actually save your changes.  Exiting the Series Options window without having first saved your changes loses all your attempted changes--immediately.
Default Series Options.  This is accessed  from [Menu]--DVR--Settings--Default Series Options.  This will bring up the series options that will automatically be applied to the creation of a NEW series. The options for every previously created series will not be affected by a subsequent modification of the Default Series Options.  You should set these options to the way you would like them to be for the majority of series recordings that you are likely to create.  Be sure to SAVE your changes.  This is what you will get when you select "Create Series Recording" from the Guide.  When creating a new series recording where you think that you may want options different from the default, select "Create Series with Options" instead.  Series Options can always be changed for any individual series set up later--but not for all series at once.
Non-series recordings.  With Fios you have no directly available options for these.  With RCN and most other DVRs, you can change the start and end times for individual episodes, including individual episodes that are also in a series.  With Fios, your workarounds are to create a series with options for a single program, then delete the series later;  change the series options if the program is already in a series, then undo the changes you made to the series options later; or schedule recordings of the preceding and/or following shows as needed.
And now, to the unwanted repeats.
First, make sure your series options for the specific series in question--and not just the series default options--include "First Run Only".  If not, fix that and SAVE.  Then check you results by viewing the current options using the Series Manager app under the DVR menu.
Second, and most annoying, the Guide can have repeat programs on your channel tagged as "New".  It happens.  Set the series option "Air Time" to "Selected Time".  To make this work correctly, you must have set up the original series recording after selecting the program in the Guide at the exact time of a first run showing (11pm, in your case), and not on a repeat entry in the Guide.  Then, even it The Daily Show is tagged as New for repeat showings, these will be ignored.
Third, another channel may air reruns of the program in your series recording, and the first showing of a rerun episode on the other channel may be tagged as "New".  These can be ignored in your series if you set the series option "Channel" to "Selected Channel".  Related to this, if there is both an SD and HD channel broadcasting you series program, you will record them both if the series option "Duplicates" is set to "Yes".  However, when the Channel option is set to "Selected Channel", the Duplicates Option is always effectively "No", regardless of what shows up on the options screen.
As for you missing two minutes,  I have sereral instances in which two programs start recording at the same time.  To the best of my recollection, whenever the warning message has appeared, ignoring it has not caused a loss of recording time.  You might have an older software version.  Newest is v.1.8.  Look at Menu--Settings--System Info.  Or, I might not have noticed the loss of minutes.  I regularly see up to a minute of previous programming at the start of a recording, or a few missing seconds at the beginning or end of a recording.  There are a lot of possibilities for that, but the DVR clock being incorrect is not one of them.  With RCN, the DVR clocks occasionally drifted off by as much as a minute and a half.

  • Pension issue Mid Month Leaving

    Dear All,
As per rule sustem should deduct mid month joining/leaving/absences or transfer scenarios, the Pension/PF Basis will be correspondingly prorated. But our system is not doing this. In RT table i have found 3FC Pension Basis for Er c 01/2010                    0.00           6,500.00.
Employee leaving date is 14.04.2010. system is picking pension amout as 541. Last year it was coming right.
    Please suggest.

    Dear Jayanti,
We required prorata basis pension in case of left employees and system is not doing this. This is the issue. As per our PF experts Pension amount should come on prorata basis for left employees in case they left mid of month.System is doing prorata basis last year but from this year it is deducting 541. I am giving two RT cases of different years.
