you need to download patch 119130-17 for Solaris 10(SPARC) or another patch for Solaris 9 and intel platform.
this will resovle the issue.
[email protected] thread was originally posted more than two years ago. The O.P. has never returned to update the thread though they have been active in the forums since that time (click their username).
The suggested patch would be of value only if the system was installed with Solaris 10 Update 2 or older and had never been patched. Rev-17 of patch 119130 is/was from 2006, which can be seen by reading the README for it.
119130-19 was from May 2006

119130-16 was from Feb 2006
The only information was the excerpt provided in the initial post. It still appears to have been an issue with the storage peripheral.

• Error with boot-archive - Machine completely corrupted

Hello!
About two weeks ago I installed the current Solaris Os on two v240 to form a cluster. For the first install I used ZFS, but that was incompatible with the cluster software. So I reinstalled the OS, chose "UFS" as the filesystem and mirrored all partitions onto the second drive in each machine with the Solaris Volume Manager.
Today I wanted to patch these machines and rebooted one of them into single user mode. Instead of booting correctly, I got this message:
WARNING: The following files in / differ from the boot archive:
        changed /kernel/drv/did.conf
The recommended action is to reboot to the failsafe archive to correct
the above inconsistency. To accomplish this, on a GRUB-based platform,
reboot and select the "Solaris failsafe" option from the boot menu.
On an OBP-based platform, reboot then type "boot -F failsafe". Then
follow the prompts to update the boot archive. Alternately, to continue
booting at your own risk, you may clear the service by running:
"svcadm clear system/boot-archive"
{code}
So I booted the machine into failsafe mode and used the instructions from http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-1985/gglbw?a=view to update the boot-archive. During this procedure I was confused that my first disk was listed as c0t0d0s0 and not c1t0d0s0. Also the output of metastat did not work and the system asked me if I wanted to mount a zpool which it found during startup. But there should not be any more zpool now, all partitions are UFS.
The reboot did not work with c0t0d0s0 in the vfstab, so I rebooted once again into failsafe. From this point, the whole system is corrupted. I am unable to boot anymore. The OpenBoot prompt tells me this:
Rebooting with command: boot
Boot device: disk  File and args:
ERROR: Last Trap: Fast Data Access MMU Miss
{1} ok boot
ERROR: /pci@1c,600000: Last Trap: Fast Data Access MMU Miss
{1} ok
I am unsure how to proceed from this point. The second machine tells me exactly the same error about "/kernel/drv/did.conf", so I do not think that in both servers a hard drive failed simultaniously.

Yeah, I posted a warning about a week ago about this issue.
If you have SVM mirrored root, then
following the "recommended actions" warnings that solaris gives in this situation results in a corrupted filesytem.
I have a job open with sun about it, and they have confirmed the problem..
From where you are, I recommend you rebuild the machines from scratch..
You might be able to split the mirror and fsck your way out, but its not worth the hassle.
I posted a way to "fix" the root cause of the issue, ie prevent the inconsistent boot archive in the first place yesterday in the "out of sync boot archive" thread in this forum.
So. you can avoid the problem the next time around..
What would have worked when it reported the inconsistent boot archive is to simply ignore it and do the "svcadm clear" command it mentions instead.
Then another reboot.
Alternatively, if you do the failsafe boot, make sure you rebuild the boot archive on both halves of the mirror..

• DS 6.3 password expiration oddities

I have been exploring an upgrade from DS5.2 to DS 6.3 to take advantage of the enhanced password policies and password expiration that have never worked quite right in DS5.2.
The previous 5.2 and migrated 6.3 environments both use netgroups to restrict logins to specific systems.
This generally works very well, although I'm seeing weirdness for local system accounts.
I've explored the forums, tweaked pam.conf and nsswitch.conf in pretty much every way that's been suggested.
DS 6.3 is setup on Solaris 10, and my client systems are Solaris 8, with all of the latest necessary patches applied.
nsswitch has:
passwd: compat
group: compat
passwd_compat: ldap
group_compat: ldap
netgroup: ldap
All local and LDAP accounts can login fine if pam.conf has:
other account requisite pam_roles.so.1
other account binding pam_unix_account.so.1 server_policy
other account required pam_ldap.so.1
But no warning messages are received from the directory server for password expiration or administrative password resets.
If I change pam.conf to have:
other account requisite pam_roles.so.1
other account optional pam_ldap.so.1
other account binding pam_unix_account.so.1 server_policy
All users can login, password expiration warnings are received, and users are notified if the admin user resets their password, but (as expected) users aren't forced to reset their password on first login or resets.
Using "required" or "requisite" for pam_ldap in the above stack order, disables local account logins, as they are
prompted for LDAP passwords that they don't have.
Any combination of settings that I've tried that successfully force resets, etc. appear to disable the ability of local accounts to login - they are prompted for LDAP password, which of course fails.
If anyone can demonstrate a combination of nsswitch.conf and pam.conf settings that will actually allow local user login, but still enforce password policies and expiration warnings, for Solaris 8 clients, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still struggling to get password expiration and inactivation to work with DS 6.3.1 and Solaris 10 5/08. When accounts are expired or inactivated (nsAccountLock) users can still login via ssh. But when accounts are temporarily locked (pwdAccountLockedTime) ssh does the right thing and won't let them log in.
Things work properly when I have
passwd: files ldap
in nsswitch.conf, but when I go to compatibility mode:
passwd: compat
passwd_compat: ldap
ssh 'ignores' expiration and inactivation status of accounts.
Following the advice of your last comment here (4.5 years ago!) I took away all access to the 'userPassword' attribute for the proxy account, but nothing changed (I did an 'ldapsearch' as the proxy account to ensure that the aci was working as expected and denying all access to the attribute).
Would you, akillenb, or anyone, be so kind as to give any information that will let a Solaris 10 client work properly with the enhanced account management facilities of the Sun DSEE 6.3.1 LDAP server? Copies of pam.conf and nsswitch.conf and details on LDAP aci's would be most gratefully received!!!

This happens on each of the 4 boot options. I'm booting from a DVD
My PC is a Pentium 3 800 with 256Mb Ram.
Any idea what the cause is?
thanks

The Solaris IDE/ATAPI kernel module has problems accessing
your ATAPI CD/DVD device.
Solaris 10 x86 currently has DMA disabled for ATAPI CD/DVD
devices. Maybe it works better if you enable DMA on the CD/DVD?
Try to change the "atapi-cd-dma-enabled" property to "1", on the
last DCA "select boot device" screen, in the edit properties submenu.
You probably have to press the "ESC" key to interrupt the cdrom
autoboot, to enter the DCA.

Hi Chandra,
unfortunately I can't stop the whole database just because of this "little" problem. And don't even know if it really helps. Now I'm installing the same SW on VMWare server. Hope, that it will help me reproduce this problem and then I can try this patch.
Thank you, however, for your suggestion.

Hi.
Patches for Solaris from Oracle - not free. You require buy service contract for get access to it.
So get Patches for Solaris 8 you neeed special say about it, becouse it's not coverd by standart premier support.
( Solaris 8 - extended support ).

When you buy service contact - you get customer support identifier ( CSI) that require for support.oracle.com

• Can solaris kernal paramter dynamically be configured?

Hi,
I want one regarding SUN Solaris OS.
As in UNIX we can change kernel parameter dynamically for the current instance using echo command, can we change kernel parameter dynamically SUN Solaris?
For example as we can set kernel parameter in UNIX using following command without restarting the server
echo 2147483648 > shmmax
Does it possible in SUN Solaris also?

Hi,
As you both correctly understood and suggested, the content of the r/w rule file can be changed or a file can be copied before opening the file. How do I change other value for XMLEncoding and XML Display Encoding ?

• HP printers in SOLARIS 10

Dear all,
we are using cups 1.1.20 on our Sparc running Solaris 10
5/09 where printers from XEROX and HP are to be used.
By copying the XEROX .ppd files to /opt/sfw/cups/share/cups
/model we are able to setup the XEROX printers via the GUI
where we select the relevant drivers under the Model XEROX
menu.
Now we want to do the same procedure with the HP printers:
Although we put some HP .ppd files to ../share/cups/model
Dir they didn't appear in the GUI's Model HP submenu.
Instead of that we see all the "foomatic/hpijs" models
stored under /opt/sfw/cups/share/cups/model/hpijs/HP.
Why? and 2nd question: Is there any way to force the GUI
to accept also the HP .ppd files under ../share/cups/
model Dir.
THX, Rainer

I found the HP JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX on the HP website. The version is E.10.34, dated 5 Aug 2002. The HP site says it is for Solaris 2.6, 7, 8, and 9. Should this installer be used with Solaris 10?
Alice Soteriou, in a Dec. 2001 article ("Basic Principles of Printing in Solaris 2.6 and Above") on the Sun website says, "Sun's position on this is to always use the vendor-supplied application to create the print queues. This is because it will probably supply the exact interface file to make the most of your printer's features (that is, duplexors, multiple trays, different font sizes and styles, etc.)" However, elsewhere on the Sun site, there are warnings against using such applications for security reasons and comments that the HP JetDirect Print Installer is not supported. What is Sun's current advice on this?
Alice's 2001 article has been reproduced as postings on supportforum.sun and sunsolve.sun.com with dates in January and February of 2005, but these repostings do not address using this application with Solaris 10.

• Compilation problem in solaris 10

Hi,
Iam using solaris 10 SUNW,UltraAX-i2. Iam trying to compile tripwire binaries tw_ASR_1.3.1_SRC. Iam using gcc 3.3.2, later I installed the libiconv package.
on reading the documentation from sunfreeware i modified the file mkheaders.conf putting the line SHELL=/bin/sh in the directory
usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris10/3.3.2/install-tools
The PATH and LD_LIBRAY_PATH are like this

/usr/local/bin:/etc:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/ucb:/bin:/sbin/:/usr/sb

/usr/local/lib:/usr/X/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/ucblib:/lib:/usr/ccs/lib:/etc/lib:/usr/d

• Installation problems with Solaris 8 on Intel

Howdy,
I am having some problem with my installation of Solaris 8 on Intel. I am installing the system on a P133 (Asus TX97 motherboard). When I first start the installation and perform the system scan I get the following error:
The PnP ISA: IDE Controller programable device was unable to be programmed.
This could be caused by two possible reasons:
- Lack of resouces available
- There is a conflict with the following already-existing device: 8086,7111 - Bus Mastering IDE Controller
When I bring up the View/Edit device settings and I scroll to the IDE controller there is an ! mark beside the PCI IDE controller. The controler is specifying: Bus 0, device: 1, function: 1 port 1F0-1F7, 3F6, 170-177, 376, E000-E00F, 0 IRQ 14, 15
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this conflict? I tried removing the PCI IDE interface and then installing a ISA IDE interfact (for IRQ: 14, IRQ 15 automatically put a PnP IDE controller there). This seemed to resolve the conflict but then I received a: No Bootable devices have been found.
If anyone can help out with how to resolve the conflict, or what the No Bootable Devices have been found error it would be greatly appreciated.
Currently there is a partition set up with NT on it, but I wish to basically get rid of everything on the HD and install Solaris on it. FYI, when I check the HD's in NT it mentions I/0: 1F0-1F7 IRQ 14 and also I/O 170-177 IRQ 15.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Regards,
S.

When I close down Solais in the CDE I am taken back to the logon screen
and I turn the PC off.Don't do that. If you simply turn off the PC, the OS has no chance to
write back cached / modified disk data back to the HDD - this is also the
reason why solaris has to check the filesystems on the next boot and apparently
has to repair filesystem defects.
What you have to do is shutdown the machine, before you can power it off.
Login as user "root" and use the command
init 5
or
halt
"init 5" will shutdown system services, by executing commands from
/etc/rc0.d/K* with argument "stop". Then it'll sync all modified disk blocks to
the HDD, kills all remaining processes and unmounts all filesystems. In this
state it's safe to power off the machine!
"halt" is a quick-and-dirty shutdown. It does not stop system services (the
/etc/rc0.d/K* commands are not run). But, it syncs all modified disk blocks
to the HDD, kills all processes and unmounts all filesystems. "init 5" is preferred,
especially if you have services like a database server running on the machine,
which needs to be cleanly shutdown. On the other hand, with a default solaris
installation and no extra services, a simple "halt" should be OK.
Btw. if multiple users are logged in on the machine, you should also have a look
at the shutdown(1M) command. "shutdown" sends warnings to the logged in
users that the machine is about to be shut down, ...

• Solaris 8 Installation on Intel - PROBLEM

Hi,
I am trying to load Solaris 8 on Intel machine , 810 motherboard , 128MB SDRAM , 20GB HDD
but whenever I try to load with CD-1 I have a problem like Webstart Installation 3.00 start and when he ask me language , after that message comes no hardisk foung and it stop immediately at # prompt.
Whenevr I start with CD-2 , he ask me for Interactive / Jump Start , I choose Interactive , it start laoding KERNAL and machine automatically reboot , again reinstall , at that same point machine reboot.
Tell me what to do , I cant go ahead , I want to load Solaris 8 , and see ..
HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Regards,
Mahen.

I think the problem source is the BIOS ACPI Power Manager, many of motherboards ACPI always let the system auto-reboot during loaded the OS kernel.
I had tried to install Windows2000 and Solaris8 10/01 on Intel 810 MB, the system always rebooted again and again, I suppose that may be some bugs on 810 chipset !!
Try to reconfigure the BIOS ACPI function, such disable it.
But, I'm not sure that is work for your case.....

The above errors are coming for almost all the packages / components.
Also I am not seeing any files created in <installdir>/SUNWspro/prod/bin folder.
Thanks in advance

Give this a whizz:
for a in `pkginfo | nawk '/SPRO/{print $2}'` ; do pkgchk $a ; doneDoes it report anything? If it doesn't, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the warnings.

Is there more detail or any earlier error messages in /var/adm/log/utinstall.*.log for this install attempt?
Did the install recognize the existing Sun Ray packages and configuration and is attempting an upgrade?
What did i wrong or is something missing???

Did you use live upgrade or an in-place upgrade? Are there any warnings, errors or cleanup actions in the upgrade logs?
Please note that the documented procedure for an SRSS upgrade with OS upgrade recommends to preserve Sun Ray settings using utpreserve(1M), then install the newer SRSS using the preserved data after the OS upgrade.
One other possible issue: I'm not sure if direct upgrade 4.0 -> 4.2 is supported (skipping 4.1).
