Kernel panic in 10.8.2 solved (for me)

Thanks to the Apple Support crew who spent hours on the phone with me figuring this out. S, you are great!
Background:
I have seven machines from Apple.  These range from Macbook Air to iMac to numerous others, all Intel-based.  Over a period of a month I began upgrading from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2, one machine at a time, and with days betweeen working on the next machine.  Each time I upgraded a machine I began experiencing kernel panics upon startup on the upgraded machine.  These kernel panics began the same day I did the upgrade, and often I'd have three kernel panics back-to-back before I was ever able to log in.
Apparent Cause of the kernel Panics:
I use the word "apparent" as not to lay blame.  Nevertheless, the common denominator on all the panic machines was the remote login software called LogMeIn (as far as I can tell).
How to Stop the Panics:
I suggest doing this only if you can do without using logmein.  If you can't, you might want to move or rename files rather than delete them, or beat on the logmein support staff to hurry up and fix this apparent conflict.
LogMeIn has files and daemon processes all over the place.  Open a terminal window and change directory to /Library/Application Support/LogMeIn
The % sign is the command prompt in the following examples.  Don't type the % sign in your command.
"cd" is the command for changing directories, "ls" is the command for listing directory contents, and "pwd" is the command for identifying where you are in the file structure.
cd like this:
% cd /Library/Application\ Support/LogMeIn
Note the "\" backslash character above.  That lets terminal know you are entering a space between the words Application and Support.
You may have to do additional hunting, but find a file in the LogMeIn directory (or possibly a slightly differently named LogMeIn directory) called uninstall.sh  The file uninstall.sh is the LogMeIn uninstaller, and it will be in one of the logmein directories.
Run the LogMeIn uninstaller from inside the directory where it is located:
%./uninstall.sh
The uninstaller doesn't seem to do much uninstalling, but it does stop a few daemon processes from being cranked up.  You've now killed most of the logmein daemon processes but not all of them.  You will also still have the round logmein icon up top on your command bar and the LogMeInGui application showing up in the startup list rolling through your console.
Go back to the finder, and look in Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins.  Find the logmein directory and delete it.
At this point, the kernel panics will stop, but you'll still have a few logmein daemons running and the icon will still be on your command bar up top.
Either spotlight "logmein" or search a few library directories for logmein subdirectories.  Delete them all.
Search these:
MacintoshHD/Library/Application Support/ ... any logmein stuff in here
MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchAgents/
MacintoshHD/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Under your username you need to look in the Library directory.  If you haven't already created an alias for it so you can see it all the time, press the option key while you are in finder and already looking at the "Go" menu from up top.
In username/Library, look in these directories: (and do it for each username on you machine to be safe)
/username/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
/username/Library/LaunchAgents/
To round out the extermination, you might want to do one final spotlight for anything logmein-related, and delete it.
For the record, I used logmein daily to connect to my office and to help administer remote machines.  I'll gladly return to using the software once this weird system killer has been fixed.  Other than the kernel panics it caused with 10.8.2, I found logmein to be some of the most user-friendly remote access software around. I was never fully comfortable with all the daemon processes, and as for security, it always gave me the creeps, but those are my own personal disorders....
I haven't had a kernel panic since, and I also no longer spend every waking hour of my time at home logged into my office machine.  Double whammy.

Nice work, thanks for the report, hopefully it'll help someone else!

  • Kernel panic log: can someone decipher this for me, if possible?

My brother has an iMac G4 with 512 MB of RAM. This computer used to be fine and then a few months ago, it started having random kernel panics. He wiped the drive and reinstalled the OS and it was fine for about 3 months.
Now it's kernel panicking randomly about 2 times a day, when checking email or burning a CD or just browsing the web. I can cause it to panic every time I try to repair the permission. On a hunch, I removed the user Library folder, logged out and back in again. The OS created a new user Library folder. I then tried repairing permissions. No panic. Through a process of elimination, I narrowed the culprit down to several preference files, including a couple of login-related plists. Individually none of these plists caused the panice, but together they did.
So I deleted those plists and used fresh ones. I tried repairing permissions. First time, no panic. Second time, no panic. Third time, panic.
I can't figure out what's messing his system up. He has an external hard drive, a printer, usb camera, and an iPod attached. Disconnecting those doesn't stop the kernel panics. I also ran Apple's Hardware Test several times and it found nothing.
Here is the panic log. I would really appreciate someone's input and suggestions.

Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • Kernel panic when using external hard drive for library

I have been using an external hard drive to manage my iTunes library for over a year. As of today, I have had three kernel panics when trying to use iTunes. I was downloading a purchase from the music store and the first panic occurred. Subsequent panics occurred immediately on startup of iTunes. Using the guest account (with default internal drive library settings), everything works fine. Both drives have been verified by Disk Utility and all software is up-to-date. No clue how to proceed.

Yes, but you need to have the external drive on and mounted when starting iTunes. You can add the external HD to your log in items list in System Preferences -> Accounts to handle this.
This explains how to move your files: iTunes for Mac-Moving your iTunes music folder: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449

  • Kernel Panic 10.6.2 Unsolved Problem

I have been up and down search engines trying to figure out how to fix this problem I recently encountered on my iMac.
    The problem happend as followed:
I have a 32gb partition on windows vista on my imacs hard drive. Windows wanted me to do an update as usual, and i did. When it was in the third and final stage of configuring the update, the computer froze and I had to restart the computer.
Once i turned on the mac, there was scattered "stuck" pixels all over the screen, some were flashing blue.
I tried to enter windows through the option key at start up but it just brings me to a black screen.
When i try to boot in OSX it loads for an abnormal amount of time then brings me to the multilingual error message. I restarted several times reaching the same error, with the same "stuck" pixels.
I retested the PRAM, heard the two chimes.
THis time, the "stuck" pixels were in a new pattern, vertical lines down the screen, about 8 across every 2 inches.
After resetting the PRAM it still brings me to the black screen in vista and kernel panic message in OSX.
    Then...
I entered single user mode, and it found some errors using /sbin/fsck -fy
I ran the command a couple of times to ensure all errors were fixed and the "volume appears to be ok" appeared consistently.
I then used "shutdown -h now" and turned the mac back on.
The pixels were still on the screen and still brought me to the kernel panic screen, as well as the black screen in vista.
I gave up and left my imac off for about 5 hours.
I came back with new hope to try and fix the computer.
I removed all first party ram, two 1 gb sticks, then reinserted.
I turned on the mac and everything was fine.
For some reason the fans in the imac were on full power blowing really fast.
There was no more stuck pixels on the screen and it booted, very slowly, to OSX.
As soon as I entered I used the disk util and repaired permissions. There seemed to be many errors in the flash plugin folder. maybe about 30 of them.
I restarted the imac, and everything was fine, everything was back to normal speed.
Once the imac went into screen saver mode for about 15 min, the screen froze and the flurry screen saver looked distorted. I restarted the imac.
Once i restarted the imac the same "stuck pixels" were back.
I tried using all previous methods, all volumes appear ok in single user mode but I continue to receive the kernel panic message along with the pixels.
I can not start from the snow leopard dvd, because i get the kernel message.
I can not boot into safe mode, because of the kernel message.
I can not use a live linux CD because it takes me to a black screen.
Although I did notice one thing.
Once I use the /sbin/fsck -fy command follwed by the exit command, i receive a string of messages, checking the normal functions.
All appear ok but there is a message mentioning the NTFS partition log check not being clear, then it says unable to mount volume cant (read/write)
I am assuming the vista update somehow damaged something but i am unsure because I was able to boot normally into OSX twice after I received the symptoms the first time.
Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?
THank you for your time reading this very long post

    EXACTLY!
The same thing happened to me while in vista, in bootcamp.
I had just bought left for dead 2 and the game would suddenly freeze and loop audio constantly
I restarted the imac and it was fine.
I tried playing the game and the same thing happened.
So i figured it was some new windows update i didnt have.
So when vista was in the 3rd stage of configuring the update, the computer froze once more and once i restarted i began getting kernel panic issues.
When i was able to boot back into windows, after the kernel panic issues.
there were about 5 or 8 Big block of pixels, about 64x64, dancing around the screen flashing different colors. I brought me to the windows start up error screen where you choose to start in safe mode or not.
I selected start windows normally and then i received a blue screen of death...on a mac.
After that I have no longer been able to boot off of dvds, of any partitions.
I know it has to be issues with the graphics card, i dont believe its fried but maybe corrupt drivers. Is there some way to reinstall those drivers perhaps?
I called 2 local expert mac technicians and they are pointing to video card issues.
Which sounds true because the mac performs fine in VGA mode(single user mode, and apple hardware diagnostic tests)
The mac begins to boot OSX but i believe once it tries to load the video drivers it goes into a kernel panic.
Maybe we can solve this some how.
I will try to post the kernel panic logs.

  • Hangs or Kernel panic on boot -- won't boot off DVD or hard drive

I have a MacBook running OS X 10.5, and when I tried to turn it on today it froze at the gray screen with the apple logo. No spinning progress wheel appeared.
In an attempt to fix this, I unplugged my external hard drive and my ethernet cable, leaving only the power cord attached. Attempting to boot from the install DVD results in a kernel panic. It won't boot in safe mode or single-user mode. In verbose and/or single-user mode the text displayed for the boot sequence appears normal until the following block of text that comes right after "The Regents of the University of California. All rights reserved.":
    MAC Framework successfully initialized
using 5242 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers
    devfsmakenode: not ready for devices!
    IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 64:87
    ACPA: System State [S0 S3 S4 S5] (S3)
This is the last block of text displayed; the system hangs at this point. I've also tried resetting the PRAM (no effect), and on the offhand chance that this could be caused by a loose RAM module I ejected them both from their slots and reinstalled them, so I know they are seated with good connections.
Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Steve

It has 1 GB of RAM, so I tried booting up with only one module. Neither one of them solved the problem, although oddly enough in Verbose mode this time instead of stopping on the error the I mentioned before, it continued a bit further and gave a kernel panic. This was the same for each module.
I'm coming to the conclusion that at this point it's probably either the logic board or the CPU, and will probably be expensive to fix -- the warranty ran out in August. I suppose that it's possible both RAM modules are bad, but it seems very unlikely that both of them would be.
I suppose I'll just have to bring it in for servicing and have it checked out.
    Thank you for the suggestions.

The panic was apparently caused by "LittleSnitch," maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed. I suggest you remove it and also "Avast."
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it throws false warnings, destabilizes and slows down your computer, and sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions. Restart.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above.

  • Kernel Panic on Mounting volume read and write

First I installed Windows with Boot Camp and Windows, than installed Parallels for the Mac, and it booted windows. As it was configuring Windows to be used with Parallels it froze the machine, and the only choice I had was to reboot the system by holding down the power button.
Now, each time I boot it up Darwin panics. After a call to apple support, I booted it into single user mode, and checked with fsck and it said it was fine. I than tried rebooted it and got the verbose message, and it happened when it attempted to mount the disk.
I went Back into single user mode. I tried to remount the partition read/write and it caused a panic. I think the partition is corrupt and I was wondering what I can do since it does the same thing on the install disk. Are there any Apple or open source solutions that may help me fix this disk?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you try to boot from the OS X Installer Disc and the computer panics then the problem is more likely hardware related.
You might try getting to the diagnostics: Insert the OS X Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics.
If you are unable to do even this without a kernel panic then take the computer in for repair.

I bought my Macbook in June, and it worked fantastic unti last week when the dreaded Kernel Panics started. They occur at least once a day.....sometimes up to 4.

Thanks for the RAM suggestion. I didn't try swapping it but did run Memtest (100 memory loops) on all of the RAM and no problems were detected....
However, I think I may have solved the problem. I use a Logitech mouse , and the driver I had been using was for the PowerPC chip. The other day Logitech released a new driver for Universal. I installed it yesterday and have been running since with no kernel panics.
Hopefully this has solved the problem.

  • Ready to dump my G5.  Please help me before I do!  Kernel panics gallore!

I have been experiencing kernel panics everytime I startup my G5 for the last 5 months. It started as an occassional event until it became an every time event. I got to the point that the computer would not start even after trying 10+ times successfully. I only managed to do it by booting up with a bootable CD or with my backup Firewire drive. I was unable to boot up with the Firewire drive when I selected it as a startup disk though. In any case, the kernel panics always occur at startup. I ran all kinds of diagnostics including Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro and Disk Utilities. All 3 always showed that my computer has no problems. Every test passed. I repaired permissions countless times, followed all different advices on how to deal with kernel panics, etc. I finally decided to erase my drive by zeroing and start from scratch. Before re-installing Tiger I ran diagnostics again to make sure nothing was wrong with the drive and the rest of my computer and all tests passed. I finally re-installed Tiger and to my frustration the problem continues even when all I have loaded in my computer is Tiger. I am able to startup without getting a kernel panic the first time after I have re-installed Tiger (have done it 3-4 times in the last week or so) but then on a second trial I get back to the same situation. I forgot to mention that I got the panics even while re-installing Tiger and while running Techtool Pro. I had to perform hard startups several times before I was able to complete the tests and re-install Tiger. In most cases whenever I get the kernel panics if I don't do a hard startup my diks accelerates very rapidly and gets the fans running at full and very noisy speed. Throughout this whole deal all the diagnostics tools have been unable to identify the problem. Do I need to trash my computer? As far as I am concerned I have tried everything I can think of for the last 3 months to no avail. The situation kept deteriorating with time so it sounds like a hardware problem and as if one of the internal parts is just dying a slow death. Any words of wisdom will do. I have owned close to 7 Macs over the years (this one is about 2 years old) and this is the first time I have felt like trashing one. Please Help!!

    Hello!
I had the same problem once - it was the Ram, but Hardware Test didn´t get it. It just said everythings ok - So for testing if the Ram is ok, I put out all the Ram that was in and always tried 2 slices at one time. Well it works fine to check when you have more than 2 slices of Ram, but if not maybe you´ve got friends to borrow some working Ram from them. After I´ve tried that I found out that there were 2 slices out of 6 damaged. After replacing the damaged no Kernell Panics again.
But I hope you have a less costs problem!
    Yours,
    Jörg

  • Kernel panics in mid 2010 macpro ( MacPro5,1) - Help please

Well I haven't had a kernel panic in any of my Mac for some years, so I was quite suprised to have 2 of these in my Macpro recently.
So I really could use - please -  some expert advice here.
    Running OS X 10.6.8
    I have:
    1) Verified the boot disk using Disk Utility, no repairs needed.
    2) Repaired Disk permissions using Disk Utility, there were quite alot that needed repairing.
    3) Checked and verified all preference files on the boot volume.
    4) Not added any new hardware or software recently, other than Apple's software update.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Robert

  • Kernel panic due to logic

Please Help: When i try to open logic pro 7, i'm getting what i'm told is a "kernel panic". It hasnt done this before but now it's doing it everytime i try to open logic. I've tried a disk utility and taking out all usb plug ins and restarting but it keeps happening. If i uninstall logic and then re install it - is there a way of keeping my channel strip settings? for example, would they be saved in project folders? Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Here is something I read from the Yahoo Logic users list. Thought it was helpful and am passing it on.
    Robyn
    ==================================
The error you are describing is a "kernel panic" error. This error occurs for a variety of reasons, but happens most often with volume structure errors, data corruption or permissions issues, driver issues, and/or bad RAM or logic board among other things. The fix below are some steps that I've used in the past to fix this issue (when its been non-hardware related).
NOTE: Be sure to have a backup of all your data before trying any steps below! If you get a kernel panic while your computer is booting and you don't have a backup yet, boot your computer in Target Disk mode (restart your computer and hold the "T" key down) and plug it into another Mac via Firewire. Your main computer will show up as an external hard drive and you can copy/backup your data over from your main computer to the second computer.
    1. Again...back up all of your data before trying any of this!
    2. Unplug all external peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, etc)
    3. Restart your computer. If you get to a login screen (or if it automatically logs you in), plug your keyboard and mouse back in and download AppleJack http://www.versiont racker.com/ dyn/moreinfo/ macosx/19596
    4. Install AppleJack and run it by restarting your computer in Single User mode (hold down command+S keys when restarting.. .when black screen comes up let go of keys and at the prompt type "applejack AUTO restart" .
After your computer restarts, plug in all of your peripherals and see if you continue to get this error.
If you continue to get the error, you may want to try using other utilities like Disk Warrior. Also, to see if you have an issue like Steve's (with the bad RAM), you can use a utility called Tech Tool Deluxe by MicroMat. TTD is a great utility to check for both hardware issues and OS volume structure errors. It is also possible that a peripheral device is causing the kernel panic error (I've seen palm pilots, digital cameras, and other devices that have caused these errors when connected to a Mac).

  • Kernel Panic - Please Help!

    Hi all,
I am having a problem with my Late 2009 27" iMac Intel Core i7. I am currently running the latest updated version of Lion (10.7.1).
I have been having Kernel Panic problems for a while and, having searched through various forums, have been unable to fix the problem.
Around 4 months ago my wife had our first Kernel Panic which instructed that our iMac should be powered off by pressing the button. This was whilst using Snow Leopard.  I was working away at the time for a few months so did not know what might have caused it. This has been happening every now and then since this occassion. A couple of days ago I had a kernel panic which wasn't resolved by restarting the computer, which I did several times. I completely reinstalled Lion which seemed to temporarily fix it, but I have just had another Kernel Panic and would be very grateful for any advice.
I purchased my iMac new around 6 months ago, so the first issue happened just a couple of months after buying it. It has 2 x 2 GB RAM installed. I have not installed any of my own, I haven't even opened the cover! There seems to be no program or event that sets it off. My kernel panic occurred today when I was not even at my computer and therefore was not opening or closing any applications.
I have recently installed Lion on my system. I noticed initially that this caused problems with Wi Fi as it told me that no hardware was installed. After reinstalling Lion after several KP’s (I also completely erased my hard drive to try to isolate the problem), Wi Fi appeared to be working again. After today’s KP I am again being told that no Wi Fi hardware is installed. Having just re-started the system, I received another KP and was given the following information:
Sorry for quality, the old 3GS never did have a great camera! From this message, it appears to my untrained mind that I am having a problem with AirPort. I know what you're thinking. I should search through the discussions because you are quite right, I am not alone in this problem. Indeed the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3194446?start=45&tstart=0 suggests what looks like the same issue. One person (Dani31) replaced the file IO80211Family.kext by that of Snow Leopard to fix it.
My main problem is that I have no idea what this solution means or how to implement it! I'm afraid I'm a complete novice when it comes to all things 'Terminal' related so am hoping that someone might take pity on me and walk me through a solution!
I use Ethernet to connect to the internet and the only wireless feature I use is to share with my MacBook Air, a feature I would happily give up if it meant fixing the problem. If somehow disabling Airport was the best solution to a stable system then I am happy to do it.
    All advice gratefully received,
    Chris

  • Kernel panics, other weirdness.

I think my early 2008 Mac Pro may be on its last legs. I've had a couple of kernel panics in the last few days for no obvious reason. Today I booted it up and got a kernel panic immediately. Rebooted in Safe Mode and it worked fine. Rebooted from the install CD and tried Repair Disk, which told me the boot drive is OK. I disconnected my TIme Machine external drive and tried to restart (from my boot drive) and this time the screen just went dark and the power light started flashing. Any ideas? I have no other peripherals connected aside from the basic ones. I know Disk Utility doesn't detect every problem, but it feels like a hardware issue to me, especially since the Mac refused to restart even before any software had loaded.

Thanks. I appreciate any help you can give me. I was starting up from another drive and it worked fine for a couple of days, but now the problem is back, computer is rebooting every few minutes.

  • Kernel panic installing mountain lion

I own 2 iMac's (24 and 27 inch), 2 Macbook Air, 2 Macbooks. All these machines crashed with a kernerl panic when upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion.
Apple have screwed up here somewhere. However, the fix is simple enough.
    Here's what happens:
    1. Download the Mountain Lion App
    2. Install
    3. System restarts
    4. System crashes with a kernel panic on re-start
    The fix...
    1. Turn off the machine by holding down the power button
    2. Turn on the machine and immediately press the 'option' key (located between the CTRL and CMD key)
    3. The machine will prompt you to select the boot disk, options are 'Mac HD' and 'Installer'
    4. Select the 'Installer' disk
Thats it, the upgrade will continue.
As this happened to all my machines I figure a lot of other people are having similar problems hence my reason for posting this.

    MacBook Pro mid 2010
well the first time i upgraded to ML it gave me a kernel panic at the restart part of the installation process. then i did a clean install after i restored from a backup and it was working fine i could actually log in and use my files, applications and documents with no problems so i shut it down for the day but then when i started it up again it gave me a kernel panic again so i had to restore AGAIN! so i tried the clean install again but this time i didnt transfer my files at the time of installation instead i wantd to see if the kernel panic would happen again so i installed it like a brand new mbp and restarted my computer guess what NO KERNEL PANIC!! so i then tried transfering my files and stuff and restoring using migration assistant and restarted again and i got the kernel panic i got my hopes up for nothing. i reintalled it again and i cant turn of my computer i have to wait for an update or a fix and i know for sure that its a software problem not hardware hopefully.
