Kernel Panic, Missing Partition, and Journal Enabling Question

I have been running Windows 6 and Snow Leopard on a mac with no problems (not my MacBook, but a iMac purchased last summer. Today, I restarted to run windows, but immediately got a message about needing to restart. I researched this message and got info on a "kernel panic". I tried opening in Safe Mode to correct that with no success. I read suggestions on opening from the install disk to repair. It would not allow me to repair and it won't allow me to enable journaling!
What do I do?

That's it! Time for a little help from you guys and gurus before I chuck my iMac out the window.

    Background:
Coputer worked fine in Mac OSX 10.4.3
    Problems:
After updating to 10.4.5... and reinstalling the system 5-6 times from scratch I have been getting kernel panics, spinning wheels and restart dialogs on startup intermittent.
    The latest panic:
Panic (cpu 0 caller 0x002E0368) Unable to find driver for this platform PowerMac 8,1.
    Kernel Version 8.5.0
There have been all sorts of kernel panics but I don't get a panic log since system seems to panic in such an early stage.
This has been done, more than once:
    - Disconnected everything
    - Reformatted HD and reinstalled from original CD
    - Downloaded combo updates from Apple website and installed them after repairing disc and permissions first.
    - Starts fine
    - Repaired permissions again, after restart.
    - installed one app at a time (latest updates on every app), allways restarting to see if everything still is fine, which it is.
    - Reconnecting external drive, burner, printer etc. allways checking if everything is fine by doing a reboot. It is.
Computer seems happy, and so am I...
Next morning, a kernel panic, or a reboot dialog or spinning wheel at startup. I reboot, cross my fingers, and it starts up first, second or third try. No panic log other than the screen on startup.
    - I reinstall combo update, restart and do a command-alt-P-R on the #&%?! and everything is fine... untill next day.
    - I run Apple Diagnostic and there is a problem with one of the memory cards. I try it again and again looping. Now no problems found?! So I rum Memtest and still no problems found.
    - I do this over and over againg to the point of physical illness.
    - I reboot from my external drive with 10.4.3 without any problems whatsoever.
    - Go back to 10.4.5 and the problems start again.
    - I remove Apple caches, Extension caches, ATS and all that. Boots fine... untill next day?!
The most irritating thing is that once the computer boots up there are no apparent problems whatsoever using it.
I have read every post on kernel panics here, at apple website and at The X Lab. Tried - in my opinion - everything without getting to the bottom of it.
    What did I forget?
    What havent I tried?
I want my trusted Mac back!
Very thankful for any help whatsoever.
P.s. Since the computer works fine in 10.4.3 I don't see the point of taking it to service. It has to bee software related, no?

Thank You for Your quick responce!
I have 2 1GB DIMMs installed from the shop when I bought my iMac. I read http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86814 about iMac Memory Specs and if I understand it correctly I could remove one of the DIMMs to test if the problem goes away. Although the computer will run better with two DIMMs it will work with one slot empty as well.
    Did I understand that correctly?

  • I need help !! ... keyboard cures for kernel panics(??) and other problems of unknown nature

OK, let's just start with I'm an idiot !! I know very little and more than enough to be dangerous !!
The machine is a G4 QS 800 DP running Tiger 10.4.11, it had been working well until about 10 days / 2 weeks ago when problems started, about the same time the Firefox, 3.6.18 update came out and I installed it, the problems may have started BEFORE the FF update by a couple of hours, just not sure now.
I was surfing the net and was interrupted with frozen, darkened screen with a multi language message saying I needed to restart the computer, OK, did that, then about an hour later the same darker screen and message, Ok do it again, then again less than an hourlater again, then 45 mins., then 1/2 hr, then another 1/2 hr, then 20 mins., it continued like this for the next 5 to 7 hours, and 9 or 10 "crashes", all the time the same message, I never saw anything else on the screen for any kind of warning or kernel panic (don't know where they show up).
So the battery is 15 months old and tests good (bought a new one anyway, no change, same problems), did the PMU, several times, for sure wrong & to often, no help there, maybe one out of 100 times I could get it to stay on & get online for awhile by holding the command +S keys till the grey screen started, then release them, the rest of the time, it would begin to start up, 10 to15 seconds and die, ... getting very frustrated I tried the reset on the front, no change, then try the "programmers button" (I said I was dangerously smart) then combinations of PMU, reset, prog'mer buttons, Battery out PMU , battery in Pmu, everything disconnected each time, grounding myself each time, trying to not screw up, but knowing I must have many times, even tried a GOOD HDD that BDAqua checked & partitioned for me that is still blank (no OS yet) with install disc & holding C down, still no good action, for few try's I had both hdd's plugged in and got small icon's 1 & 2 for both hdd's while they were in & plugged in.
I talked with BDAqua on saturday, late, after hours, he had already waited for me, so as I described what I had done, HE said that the PMU should be held for 20 TO 25 seconds (or longer maybe in some cases, my impression of what I was hearing), and here is the BIG THING he said that gave me an idea to ask this question, BDAqua asked if I had / suggested I try, doing the PRAM RESET 5 TIMES IN A ROW, of course I had not, and haven't yet. I did do it a few times in all that I was trying, but never in a row, because 1 time never got a positive result, I  didb't think of multiple resets (I'm not all that smart, just dangerous). but from our talk, I think I understand it to mean, It may take many ( or multiples of 5 ?) to clear out (flush out the evil demons from the kernels ???) .......
SO MY QUESTION IS THIS; WHAT ARE THE MAGIC KEYBOARD STEPS / KEY COMBO'S, AND / OR PMU, OR RESET BUTTON, OR PROGRAMMER BUTTON SEQUENCES TO FOLLOW, BEFORE I GIVE UP AND CHANGE THE MOBO, CPU'S, OR WHATEVER, TO TRY AND SALVAGE MY G4 QS ???
ARE THERE MULTIPLES 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 PMU RESETS TO CURE CERTAIN problems, like magic combinations ???)
....... any tricks of the trade that I can try, I have only had this machine for15 months and really like it and want cure it's troubles and WHAT EVER I DID TO IT THAT WAS WRONG !!!, it's a self esteem thing at this point, I can let it beat me because I hurt it, I must make it good to sve my own feelings, even though I did wrong, I must make ammends !!!
Many Thanks To All That Take The Time To Read This, ...  And More Thanks to Those Who Help,  My Deepest Apprecaition To All,  ......  wayne146  .......

Avoid unnecessarily resetting the SMC or PMU for troubleshooting purposes
Note: There is NO magic time required to clear the PMU. A firm, complete push is all that is required.
The PMU reset button is a momentary contact switch because the reset only requires momentary contact.
Another myth is that more than 2 chimes during a PRAM reset resets better.
    A reset is a reset.
If you need more than is done in a PRAM reset after 2 chimes, use the NVRAM reset in Open Firmware.

    Disk Operating System
That would be "DOS like" as in like the screen that you use in booting a Windows machine.

  • Kernel Panic boot camp and parallel

    Hello,
I've installed boot camp and run windows since the last couple of weeks and it runs flawlessly. However, when I tried to create a virtual machine via Parallel and set my boot camp partition as VM's partition, my Macbook crashed.
Now I cannot even get into MacOS X since it always returned a kernel panic message (Please restart the computer...). I already tried every way imaginable (restart it, press X, reset PRAM, etc), I can't even boot to my own install CD!
Here's the error log (BTW, I'm currently on XP running via boot camp, it seems that I can still access my mac partition via macdrive):

Unfortunately, what you did not post was the panic log. Open Console and locate the panic.log. Post the log entry for the kernel panic.
I suggest you might try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Kernel panic's, crashes and Lion, Lion, Lion

At first I thougth it was me.. or I should say my system and than I found a lot of people with Kernel panic's and this page.
    http://rixstep.com/1/20110807,00.shtml
When I first saw the new login window in Lion.. for some reason I felt back in windose...
Anyone knows what happened to apple with Lion ?
And yes, I know a lot of people have had nothing but good experiences. .. so far with Lion.  but the amount of people complaing about kernel panics is not usual for OS X.... so, what's up .. ?

Thanks for the reply.  and no I am not a computer and specially Mac expert.. but I have been playing with them for a while.  enough to know as little as having done what you have sugested before I dare to post what I have posted.. clean install has been done 3 times.  erased partition, cleared PRAM, etc, etc, etc..
Like I said.. I am no expert.. but one thing I do is my reading, yes I searched the forums of a few websites, yes I posted the logs of at least 3 different kernel panics, yes I google parts of the logs.  the one thing I don't know and don't have the time to do, is learn how to read the logs..
System has been working to perfection since 2007, have done all upgrades, current install only has Quicken essentials (I know it *****) and 1Password. nothing else. and it already did it twice in the past 24 hours.  and no, is not my hardware. and yes one of the times was before Quicken and 1Password.
Just in case.  previous upgrades have been done while running at least:

  • Please help restore DMG missing partition and access file vault.

I am quite emotional at the moment, if anyone can help me access my files, pictures of my baby daughter and important documents.. I would be extremely grateful and willing do make a donation via paypal.
I have a 160 GB hard drive, which was partitioned as 30GB Spare and 130GB with my operating system and user files, including my filevault user directory.
My computer was downloading movies which filled up the 130GB partition, most of the 130GB is contained in my personal filevault user directory, my computer became very slow and unresponsive and i tried to free up space by deleting files which i no longer needed.
The machine became slow and un-responsive and required a number of forceful shut downs and restarts until the machine would no longer boot up, I inserted the OSX CD and attempted to boot from CD and use disc utility which now only displays my 30GB storage space, I was forced to install OSX on the remaining 30GB partition.
Now running OSX on the 30GB partition i used DISK DRILL to scan my hard disk for the missing 130GB partition which it did and i was able to save this as a DMG file to a external hard disk, now i am able to get this DMG to mount in the OSX i am running on the spare 30GB space, however i am not able to access the majority of the data inside the file vaulted user account.
I would like to know, would it be possible to restore the missing partition, as it remains on the HD but seems to be hidden.
Or is there somehow i can login to the user account on the mounted DMG ?
I am not very familiar with using terminal and would be extremely grateful for any advice or support leading to the recovery of my files.

    plesehelpme wrote:
Is there anyway to recover the larger partition ? In disk utility i made the mistake of pressing the - button which has left me with the following:
[NO NAME] - is currently where i have installed OSX temporarily.
And the grey space which contains my previous operating system and all my information which i desperately need to retrieve.
Is there anyway to restore and boot the missing partition ?
Probably not.     You've now deleted the partition.  It was probably useless anyway, though.
When i run disk drill or other disk recovery tools i am able to see the partition including including the files and my personal sparsebundle.
But you can't open the sparse bundle, much less see any of the files inside it, right?
Since you've already recovered the (probably-damaged) sparse bundle containing your encrypted home folder, you'll have to work with it.
I'd strongly recommend making another copy of that on another external HD and putting that "on the shelf" before doing anything else to it.   I suspect you have little chance of recovery, but don't take the risk of further damage.
You haven't answered my earlier questions:
Have you tried to run Repair Disk on either the original or copied partition?
If that doesn't help, this might:  http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/fixfilevault.html
Do you have Time Machine backups?
Obviously, now that the partition has been deleted, you can't run repair disk on it, but try it on the recovered disk image.
You need more expertise than either Christopher or I have.  Since Apple no longer uses "legacy" File Vault, it will be more difficult for them to help, too.
Is your Mac covered by AppleCare?  If so, give them a call.
If not, your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar might be able to help:  http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
Or check for an Apple Authorized Service Provider: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US
If not, one of them may know of an outside service than can help.  That will be quite expensive.

  • Kernel Panics When sleeping and waking.

I have had so many of these lately. Is this pretty common since 10.4.3? It kinda *****. I think it might have to do with the new safe sleep feature that was added. I have reset nvram, pram, pm, formated and installed tiger. But with 10.4.3 it just keeps kernel panicing. I am almost considering selling my laptop w/ my boxes copy of tiger for ppc, because applecare hasn't been too responsive in this matter.
What do I do? I thought it was probably apple's hardware that isn't solid enough, but I think it might just be the latest patch. So has anyone else ran into this? I have seen a bunch of similar posts, but everyone's experioence seems to be a little different. I always get that "Turn off your computer" kernel panic message in osx (yeah the cute multiligual BSOD, except it is pretty and grey).
Oh yeah, don't post all that "OSX kernel panic troubleshoot guide." I am not a newbie, I know all that stuff, and I have run most of the tests I can. I should try my copy of techtool though. But I just don't think it is hardware, and if it is then I am still sore with apple since they make the hardware too .

Is this pretty common since 10.4.3? It kinda *****. I think it might have to do with the new safe sleep feature that was added.
Time to come clean. Did you enable Safe Sleep following instructions such as these:
    http://www.andrewescobar.com/archive/2005/11/11/how-to-safe-sleep-your-mac/
If so, then the most likely reason you're experiencing kernel panics is because you're running it on an unsupported system. Safe Sleep is (currently) only supported on the new 15" and 17" PowerBooks (with the high resolution displays).
If not, please post the latest entry in panic.log.

  • Kernel panic at startup and impossible to reinstall SL

    Hi
I've recently bought the new iMac with SSD.
I've upgraded the Ram, adding 8go Crucial to the 4go existing.
The first time, I started very well, very quickly.
After that, I installed W7 on my bootcamp partition. It went very fine also.
After having installed W7, I booted on the Mac OS X partition. This was the first time I've got a kernel panic at startup.
Fine, I thought it was a mismanipulation when I installed W7. So, I wanted to reinstall SL.
I tried, 2 or 3 times, but I've always had this message while installing "The installer could not copy the necessary support files".
I managed to boot Mac OS in Safe Mode. I tried to installed SL directly from the Safe Mode, and I got another error : "Impossible to read the installation disk".
So I tried to make a UBS Stick bootable image of the SL installation disk : I cannot mount it "checksum error".
I hardly think now that the problem is coming from the RAM, but instead from the SL disk.
The installation disk is new, it was the first time I was using it.
Now, I am able again to boot from the mac os partition without having chaned anythink, but having booted once in safe mo
Guys, could you help my with that ? How can I get a new disk ? How can I be sure that the RAM is OK (W7 is working fine and SL also right now).
    Thanks in advance

Sorry misunderstanding, my bad. By new I meant never used before.
It is the brand new iMac 27" SSD. So it supports up to 16GB of RAM.
I am also sure of the model of RAM I ordered.
I wanted to remove the new intalled RAM, however, I can't : it's way to hard. When I pull the tab, I just slip.
I can boot to the Install DVD (So, SL 10.6.8). I can go up to the beginning of the installation. It evens begins to copy files, and I always get the error at the same moment.
The same thing happens when I try to install SL from the Safe Mode of my existing OS. It begins to copy file until I get "unable to read the disk, bla bla".
I hope it was only a minor disk corruption, but I would like to be sure. How can I test the RAM and the Installation Disk ?
I tried to make an image of the installation disk, but when I try to mount the compressed image, I get a checksum error...
    thanks again for your help

  • Kernel Panics on startup and when starting in recovery mode

I have a brand new Mac mini late 2014 right out of the box (2.8ghz, 8gb ram, fusion drive)
Upon initial startup the computer froze with a spinning wheel of death during the setup process and then restarted with a kernel panic. The computer kernel panics every time I restart or if I try to go into recovery mode. I live in Ecuador and am about a 10 hr drive from where I bought the computer. Hoping someone might have some insight or can understand any of this panic report. Thanks in advance for any help.

can any one help me out here, tomorrow I am going to boot it into target disk mode and install from a G5 onto the powerbooks HD doing a CLEAN install and then I am going to try booting it from a DVD and doing another CLEAN intstall just cause I dont trust a firewire install for some reason. I would like to avoid all this mess if possible. ANY HELP PLEASE, either respond or email me tend0 at mac dot com. thanks

haha oh man thanks for startin slow with me, but we are passed that tested RAM, start up items, prefs, tried makin a new user account, as I stated before I can not boot from a DVD/CD.. that was one of the problems so I cant run anything that involves tageting the main HDD while its mounted. I have also repaired perms, ran fsck, tried booting up DiskWarrior(didnt boot from the CD), etc. if any one knows this perticular kernel panic string and can point out what the conflict is I can resolve it but other than that I have ran the run of the mill check to see if everything is in order procedure again and again.

  • Kernel panics, gray screen, and crashing

Has anyone been getting the kernel panic that displays a grey screen and says you need to restart your computer? I am getting this about once a day. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the MBP or the software I happen to be running at the time of the crash/panic. This has happened to me using Itunes, Garageband, and Firefox (both the Intel and regular verison). I'm just trying to figure out if this is a common problem a lot of people are having or if its just my computer. THANKS!

Hi, I received my mac book pro on Friday (May 26) and it has crashed every day since I got it - more than once. I went by the mac store and talked to the folks there - they said to re-install OS X as a first check. Now it's time for hardware checks - it crashed on my every time I tried to do anything on it tonight. Bummer to spend all the money and end up disappointed. Somebody call the wambulance.

  • Kernel panics during boot and other fun

It started a few weeks ago when my iMac G5 wouldn't wake up from sleep (it had to be restarted). Last week I started getting random kernel panics, and yesterday after one such panic it would no longer boot.
Also last week the computer beeped three times instead of the normal boot sound, although that only happened once.
Usually it will get a kernel panic or simply freeze during the Apple logo/pinwheel screen. Sometimes it will crash before the screen even comes on (denoted by loud fans). A few times it froze on the blue screen.
I took out the RAM and reseated it, but that didn't solve anything. It is the original RAM that came with the computer, so that's probably not the problem. I zapped the PRAM, and that didn't help, nor did starting in Safe Mode. I guess I'll try booting from the Leopard disc next.
Any idea what this might be, and if I can fix it without bringing it in for service?

If you have not already done so, except for the keyboard & mouse disconnect all devices from your computer & check out the following:

  • Kernel Panics, Sudden Logout and Apple Hardware Test

    Hello,
I have been experiencing Kernel Panics and Sudden logouts twice a week. I thought it was strange, because my boss just bought me the MacMini with 8gb RAM preinstalled.
I want to solve the problem, but I don't want to send my machine to support in vain.(because the MacMini is actually owned by the institution I work in, and those things take time).
So I ran some diagnoses I heard about on the internet, but I don't know what they mean, or what I should do with it.
I made two kind of diagnoses:
I tried to run Quick Apple Hardware Test.
I tried to run Mac version of memtest in single-user mode.
I made both diagnoses with each memory separatedly, in every slot combination possible, and both memories together.
Everytime I tested both memories together, AHT froze while testing memory, and memtest resulted in failures.
Everytime I tested a memory module separatedly, memtest and AHT gave no errors.
Is there any explanation for my Mac Mini not like my both memory modules together?
I updated OS X to 10.7.3 with combo update, and FileVault(don't know it makes any difference).
I made all tests with no peripherals other than a DVI monitor on HDMI out, a Magic Mouse, and a Apple (wired) Keyboard.
    What should I do?
Should I send it to support and spend my next month without a machine?

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

  • Kernel panic with ipf and patch 125014-02?

    Hi,
After bringing a bunch of Sparc servers running Solaris 10 up to current patch level I've been experiencing strange and unstable behavior. All servers are running with an ipfilter configuration.
One server has been freezing on the network interface at least once every day without any syslog notice. A reboot is the only way up again.
Now today one server (a Internet proxy server) did a kernel panic twice - never seen that before on this server.
It seems like it was caused by the kernel module ipf. And since it has never happend before I guess it could be caused by the IP filter patch 125014-02.
Anyone experiencing something similar and am I on the right track with suspecting this patch to be bad?
    Thanks
    Kasper

me too - I'm still waiting for a patch:
Case# 65340046 - panic due to IPF firewall
    From: Fletcher Cocquyt
    To: <[email protected]>
    Date: Feb 12 2007 - 10:09am
We had another panic & reboot, so we will be forced to disable IPF firewall
(is svcadm disable sufficient, or do I need to do more to prevent the
    panics?)
How can I be notified when there is a proper Sun patch to fix this?
    thanks

    Is it IPF firewall related?
Will disabling ipf (until there is a fix) avoid this bug ?
    Thanks

    Fletcher,
This system panic'd due to bug 6490522: S10 System panic bad mutex in
ipf:fr_derefrule. Unfortunately at this time we do not have an offical fix
    for
this bug, however we do have a test binary built. Please let me know if you
would like to test this binary on this system.
    Thanks.

  • Kernel panics, crashes, shutdowns, and video problems

    Hey guys,
My girlfriend bought a black Macbook about 8 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago she started having the random shut-off problems, crash issues, etc that many have had. So then she took the system to the Genius Bar and they shipped it to Apple. She got the laptop back just 1 week ago after they replaced the logic board and the heat sink. Over the past two days she's having this problem again.
    Here's a picture of it:
After talking to AppleCare for about an hour on Tuesday, they reset the Power Management Unit on her laptop again. They also did a Hardware Test and asked her to reformat and reinstall Tiger. The rep said that if the same problem as before was happening again, she'd be termed a "looper" (which my guess means that they'll do a replacement). It seemed to be working fine until earlier today.
It randomly shut off, or reboots. Other times it shuts off the screen and keeps running... screen goes black, but you can feel the HD spinning, etc. It also had a kernel panic which said "Unable to find driver for this platform: ACPI". Also there was a crash where it was a gray screen with some horizontal color bars. After running the hardware tests it found no problems. After running memtest for several hours I also got no errors. Then she called AppleCare and visited the Genius Bar again, and they said they cannot replace the machine and all they can do right now is send it back for repairs. She cannot wait that long again for another repair. Last time it took over a week and it didn't seem to fix whatever problems this MacBook is having.
Any ideas on what to do? Having a week-long downtime again on a brand-new computer is not acceptable.
