Kernel panic OS X Snow Leopard
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've had trouble starting up a day.

Please post the complete Kernel Panic log you can find it at:
/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
Once you post it we can get a good idea.
I'm getting the idea though yours is cause by RAM primarily based on your comment in #7. "Single user (Cmd+S) - 3 beeps and repeats"
Here is what Apple says about 3 beeps on startup in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1547
The RAM issues can be:
1. failed RAM, yes it can & does fail
2. Incorrect RAM, did you upgrade recently?
3. Unseated RAM, remove and reseat as needed.

Kernel panic on shutdown - Snow Leopard 10.6.2
Hi
I am receiving intermittent Kernel Panic on shutdown - there seems to be no common denominator to the problem.
I have just ensured that the memory is bedded properly and checked hard disk connections. Then I've run the hardware test in detailed mode which has returned no hardware errors.
This is a Unibody Macbook Pro 15" - any ideas what I can do next? (the warranty has now expired of course)!!
< Edited by Host >Given Tech Note HT2546 which states (down at the bottom)
"Providing the information to Apple
If you record a kernel panic, you can post this information to Apple Discussions. Please include detailed hardware configuration information in your post. You may do this by copying and pasting information from a System Profiler report into your post. Please also include any reproducible steps that lead to this message. Apple cannot respond to all postings."
I find that hard to believe.
Here's the log (looks like a PGP problem perhaps):

Kernel panics following wakeups using Leopard
I had been encountering routine system crashes (kernel panics) after waking my G5 from sleep mode. In an effort to isolate a possible cause, I changed USB hubs, disconnected external hard drives, and so on. What seems to have been the source (fingers crossed) of the panics was the D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth dongle (USB). After removing that, I've had no further crashes (again, fingers crossed).
I'm curious if others have experienced the same or similar problems. In another post I wrote
I have been in discussions with Apple Support for the last 6 weeks with ongoing kernel panic problems. We narrowed these down to LCC and it's accompanying files. LCC is LOgitech Control Centre which is installed to control the mouse gear wheel etc on the MX Revolution and others.
The Mac does one of two things.
In 10.4.10 and Leopard 10.5.1 the mouse constantly freezes on the screen, the keyboard still works and all apps can be quit and work saved. Checking activity monitor shows the Logitech software in red, all with problems. On logging out, the mac freezes. A forced restart with the poer button is the only way of restarting.
In Leopard 10.5.1 the Mac also constantly has Kernel Panics on wake up from periods of sleep. These can be just 2 minute periods or 2 hour periods, it's random.
If a Mac is woken from sleep and it enters a Kernel Panic, shortly afterwards a the fans rev to full throttle. This could potentially be a risk in a studio with several macs left on sleep for the night. Especially if someone caught the mouse on a Mac on the way out one night....would they get hot revving all night? Logitech should seriously look into this problem as it appears from all our tests that it is definately their software causing the problems.
We have tried upgrading to the latest 2.4 LCC software, still the kernel panics and mouse freezes continue.
If I remove the USB dongle before the computer sleeps it doesn't have kernel panics. However this is not practical and it still doesn't help the freezing issue.
Apple support have been fantastic in helping us with this problem, but the underlying cause lies with Logitech. Once again, we have a fantastic product and amateur software from Logitech. -
Constant Kernel Panics after Upgrade to Leopard
Ok, so I have an older G5 tower (circa 2005), and i just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (i know, way late).
Since the install, I can never fully startup, as I keep getting kernel panics (gray screen restart). I tried starting up from install disk, reparing the disk, and the permissions, everything checks out. then, same problem. unplugged all peripherals.
please help!!!!

Kernel Panics at Mac Mini Leopard
Hi guys,
I have been experiencing regular kernel panics for the past two weeks and after calling twice Apple i decided to go on with a posting. Here is a briefing of what happened...
I bought the mini with Tiger just before Leopard was released. It had 1gb of RAM but on the spot I asked them to upgrade it with 1 more so in total I have 2 gb now. When Leopard was released -a month later or so -I bought it from apple and did and upgrade. The mac mini was working fine for almost a year but recently it started to crash with the screen going grey and a message saying "you need to restart your computer by holding down the switch on button" in several languages. This is a kernel panic as far as I know.
I decided to go for an archive and install of Leopard but the problem persisted. I then did a clean install (Leopard) but after a few days -and after installing all the programmes I had before- the same again with kernel panics. I run the hardware test -the short one/2mins and the longer one- and everything appeared to be fine. I cleaned the cache and cookies with Onyx and still nothing. I run a software called preferential treatment and checked for system preferences problems. It found some and i deleted them. Of course I run disk utility and repaired permissions several times but again nothing. A guy from Apple told me to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard but I haven t done that.
Initially I was suspecting Time machine having a corrupted file that would cause the Kernel Panic but the again I should have the problems when I am entering time machine which is not the case.
It looks like that the Mac mini crashes when 5-7 applications are running. I used to work with many applications open but I never had this problem. Can it be a hardware problem?
The kernel panic report is as follows. Any help would be appreciated.

Kernel Panics On Startup In Leopard
I have a Powermac G4 dual 1.0 Ghz tower. It has one hard drive with three partitions containing OS 10.5, 10.4, and 9.2 on them.
When I try to start up in 10.5 (which is the default), it kernel panics early in the startup process. There's a whole bunch of text onscreen in front of the apple logo which says something like:
System Failure: cpu=0 code=00000001 (Corrupt stack)
Latest crash info for cpu 0:
Exception state (sv=0x24065c80)
Then a bunch more numbers and so forth. The numbers I've posted above change each time but the structure of the error message is the same.
It also says: Backtrace terminated - frame not mapped or invalid
And at the bottom— BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
I tried booting the same machine into OS 10.4 from a different partition on the same hard drive and it worked without any problems EXCEPT that the system clock had been reset back to 1969 despite the machine having been plugged since the last time I used it. (I reset the clock.)
I also tried putting it into target disk mode and booting the laptop into 10.5 off it. That worked too, although I'm not sure if that means much since the laptop is a Macbook— OS 10.5 is a fat binary, but the Intel laptop wasn't actually using the same system files as the PowerPC desktop.
The very first time I tried to use the Powermac today, it shut down completely at some indeterminate point in the startup process— the kernel panic has occurred on all subsequent attempts to boot it into 10.5 thus far.
Incidentally, I have an eMac which I once booted into OS 10.5 using an external hard drive. It worked once but all subsequent efforts resulted in the same error. I didn't think much of it at the time since that machine didn't officially support OS 10.5 anyway.
Edited to add: I have a third-party USB 2.0 card installed which has caused occasional kernel panics when I use it, but I haven't done anything to the machine since the last time it worked properly.Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Does that boot without panic?
Do you have a 10.5 Install Disc to boot from?
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

A new Mac shipping with OS X Lion will not accept OS X Snow Leopard
Hi Fans,
I''m back again to report on my 2.5hr campaign to get Snow Leopard back.
I have of course no DVD drive on the Macbook Air.
So, I created a restore disk from my Mini, to an external drive.
Loooks good...
Boot Air, kernel panic. The Snow Leopard DVD is too old.
Error is:
You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X.app with this version of Mac OS X.
You have Install Mac OS X.app 23.1.
So, I will call apple apparently tomorrow and ask if there is a possibility for a later version DVD or a USB I can get.
I might add that if you have problems, apple prefer that you email them here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback
Other than that, a little rant here could help...
The experience I've had is pratically software entrapment, Apple just about closed the doors on software choice. Thanks, yes I see the point, I will eventually get some 'feedback' and hope that I can survive the shortcomings...
I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible at all? To run Snow Leopard on the New Macbook Airs, i7 etc.
If it is... I will call and wait to talk to an Apple Expert...
What's interesting is Progress has become a relative concept, whereas before, Progress really mean't progress.
I think we got all excited over a rather fluffy domestic cat...
OS X Mr Snuggles?
Actually, the next version was probably the Sabre Tooth, but as we know, that cat is extinct.
I am trying to keep up good spirits by lightening up this 50/50 release. -
Leopard causing frequent Kernel Panics?
Leopards a great OS and is pretty nice & smooth most of the time i'm running it.
Though sometimes after long usage (not necessarily intense either -I could just be surfing the net), it seems my computer starts to get bogged down, it starts to lag a tiny bit then without warning i get the kernel panic screen. Its happened atleast 5 times to me already since i installed Leopard.
I added 2GB more ram to my macbook pro and, seems to have reduced the occurances but it has happened to me once since i added the ram.
Just a minor annoyance and hoping someone could pinpoint the problem here, or if anyone else gets the same thing happening to them?It doesn't seem to be tied to anything specific that I've noticed. Sometimes just Safari running, then it will freeze. I hard reset, and then open iChat, type one word and it'll freeze completely again. Last night it froze, so again I had to do a hard restart; I then opened System Preferences, and before I could do anything, it froze again...I have no idea?
Besides the freezing itself, the odd part is that I still have yet to see a kernel panic grey screen in Leopard. Until I read similar reports on here of lockups in Leopard, I actually thought that they removed the panic screen altogether.
Sometimes when it locks, the beachball cursor will appear (while the drives/fans increase in speed dramatically as stated above), and I can still move the mouse, but cannot click on anything - the cursor moves, but can't interact with anything; and it doesn't recover - a hard reset is all that will fix it. So it seems that something is almost hanging it up indefinitely at a very low-level. Perhaps this comes back to the bugs that have been reported in detail specifically with the Radeon X1900. That's another topic (I've posted on that as well, as I'm seeing major glitches in the display; lines and random colored shapes), but maybe it has something to do with this as well, I really don't know.
All I know for sure is, it's definitely problems in Leopard. I had hardly any trouble with Tiger over 2 years, so far with Leopard my Mac Pro is crashing constantly. I'd like to know why the kernel panic grey screen hasn't been shown to me yet, and if this is maybe a clue as to a specific type of issue more than another. -
Kernel Panic Waking From Sleep
I've had the following kernel panic twice since installing Leopard on day one. I happens when waking my MacBook from sleep. Has anyone else seen this?
Thanks,
Bill

Still getting consistent kernel panics over here on Leopard and cannot figure out why. Problem is still the same - panics happen when browsing my network computers or trying to edit a file that resides on the network. Just now I got one that sent my MBP into a tailspin while trying to edit a .rtf file that was sitting on my G5's desktop from my MBP upstairs. Seriously? It's getting really old and I'm getting really frustrated. Can anyone decipher this error report? I had zero problems before upgrading to Leopard and ever since it's been one giant headache.

Rod, no peripherals connected to the MBP at times of crash. I had transferred some photos about an hour before though.
I'll give both of these suggestions a shot and see what happens. Thanks, guys! -

Your'e answer is really for those kids with no experience in a terminal.
The command line is only for pro users and should no be used by any DAU. Therefore no problem at all with "rm -rf" if you have changed into the correct directory first.
One suggetion is adding these lines to your "~/.profile"
TERM=xterm-color
# colors for misc things
export TERM=xterm-color
export GREP_OPTIONS='--color=auto' GREP_COLOR='1;32'
export CLICOLOR=1
# Set colors
export LS_COLORS='di=1;36:fi=0:ln=4;34:pi=5:so=4;5:bd=5:cd=5:or=4;91:mi=4;92:ex=35:*.r b=90'
alias rm="rm -i"
alias cp="cp -i"
PS1="(\u) \[\033[01;31m\]\h\[\033[01;34m\] [\w]# \[\033[00m\]"
Than do a
# source .profile
at the terminal prompt in order to active the settings immediatelly.
Now the "rm" command will always ask before deleting any file or folder.
Unfortunately if you like to delete a folder containing other folders with several files inside you will go mad!
One possible intermediate solution is
# unalias rm; rm -rf ./System/Library/Caches/com.apple.*; alias rm="rm -i"
But as mentioned before, if you have "sweaty fingers" while typing in Unix commands you should better stay away from the terminal. -
Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 causes immediate kernel panic
Has anyone else encountered this issue? I have tried twice to no avail now to install the keyboard firmware update. I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this problem.
Given that I haven't had any keyboard problems, I am guessing that I can just ignore this update.
Note that contrary to the comment accompanying the installer that it will launch automatically, I had to start it manually both times.
Leopard's quality of updates has really tanked in relation to Tiger's. I have never seen a kernel panic before upgrading to Leopard... in fact, until Leopard, the kernel was so stable with Tiger that I was lulled into thinking that Macs don't have kernel panics. Leopard has provided abundant proof now to the contrary. I think that's a shame.David
You should also report this to Apple at <http://www.apple.com/feedback/> so that they can check whether there is a bug in the update or somewhere else. If they receive several similar feedback messages it will alert them to a problem. Generally they don't respond directly unless they want further information such as a copy of the installation log.
You could also attempt a re-instal in safe mode (startup holding the shift key until the Apple logo appears. If you haven't recently done so use Disc Utility to Repair Permissions and see whether this finds any problems. Even startup from your installation dvd, select language, then choose Disk Utility from the top menu and Repair Disk. All of these processes may allow the installer to complete its task.
Note that some firmware updates are slow completing their tasks and usually they advise that there should be no other activity on the computer until the process has completed. I've seen it mentioned that the computer may look to have frozen but to wait - not for ever though!

Kernel Panic when I insert Snow Leopard Disc
Hi, when I insert the snow leopard retail disc, my mac startup with a kernel panic, without log in logs folder. And on screen appear this.
http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/282/20111115195144.jpgThe 2011 iMacs were originally shipped with OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard and to my knowledge the Retail Snow Leopard DVDs are version 10.6.3 and thus too "old" for your iMac.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
Use the grey-labeled OSX Snow Leopard DVD that came with your iMac instead of the Retail one.
If you don't have it anymore, call Apple with ythe serialnumber of your iMac at ahnd and ask for replacement.

Frequent Kernel Panics on Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I recently bought a used MacbookPro5,1 with a 2,4 Ghz Core2Duo Processor. It was upgraded to 4 GB of RAM and a 750GB HDD by the previous owner. When I received it yesterday, it was running 10.6.3, I think. It worked flawlessly for the first couple of hours. Then I downloaded the update to 10.6.8. No Problems. After that, it wanted to download and install even more updates for iTunes, Java, and the like. During this update process the Macbook had its first Kernel Panic. It was followed by 3 or 4 more during the next couple hours, with no particular pattern. (Browsing the web, gaming, etc.)
I did run a memtest, and it crashed the first time I was running it. However, I was doing other tasks at the same time. The second time, I ran 2 memtests, with absolutely no problems.
The last Kernel Panic occurred while I tried to uninstall the Avast antivirus I had installed, since I suspected it as a cause for the panics. After unistall, I had no more panics.
Today, I used the Macbook for a couple of hours without any problems. I spent a lot of the time playing a 3D game from the app store. No problems. Then, another kernel panic while watching a youtube video, and another a couple hours later while just browsing facebook. I did another memtest, still nothing.
I then uninstalled firefox, thinking it might be the problem, since it was involved in most of the panics.
I was able to use the laptop for a couple of hours, and now it had another panic while watching a video on safari...

I hope any of you guys can help me solve this problem. I really don't know what to do. I really hope its not hardware related. If you need any more information please tell me.I assume you have working installer discs? If so here's a suggestion:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc. Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key. Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
