Kernel panics despite all fixes

First, the specs of my system:
OSX 10.3.9
G4 Dual 450 with 1gb ram
Apple 17" Studio Monitor (clear one)
40 gb Maxtor drive and 120 gb Seagate drive with a 30 gb "Scratch" partition
CS2, Office X, Firefox, Apple Mail, Fetch, Dreamweaver, Lotus Notes (I teach an online class and that's the interface, believe it or not), Virex and Disk Warrior
A while ago I started to have two problems, which may or may not be related:
1. Sometimes the computer would not wake from sleep requiring pushing the restart button.
2. Kernel panics at least a few times a month, always soon after waking from sleep
I went through every step outlined in the X Lab: Resolving Kernel Panics page. Finally, in desperation I erased the start-up disk and re-installed the system, going through all of the system updates (note - after reading this forum I have not installed the most recent security update). Well, I'm still having both issues, plus a few more concerning iPhoto permissions (that will be a separate post). I keep no peripherals attached except when I need them (Epson scanner and Neptune FW drive) and the kernel panics occur whether or not the peripherals are attached to the computer. I've even swapped out my Macally keyboard and Kensington mouse for an Apple keyboard and logitech mouse, but still had kp's.
Here is the most recent panic log:

I've included the re-start info because in all of the system logs there is always the last line about the ROM for the video card being too old. This is the original card that came with the computer and the monitor hooked up to it is the original one.
I'm at my wit's end. Any suggestions? I have 10.4 available but haven't been really interested in updating because my computer is old and I'm concerned that it isn't really fast enough for 10.4. But if it would stop the kernel panics and wake from sleep problems, I'd try it.
Thanks,
Leslie

Kernal panics are usually caused by a hardware problem. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:

    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps

any suggestion or help must be apreciated
    thanks in advance

You upgraded from 2.6.17 to 2.6.19 by any chance?
When you update the Archlinux kernel to 2.6.18, make sure
that you changed the initrd setting in your bootloader
(/boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf). The filename is
                       kernel26.img instead of initrd26.img for kernel26 and
                       kernel26beyond.img for kernel26beyond. For troubleshooting
                       and advanced setup, see

  • Quicksilver G4 wont finish startup - gets kernel panic - how to fix?

Recently acquired a G4 quicksilver - dual core 867Mhz (mirror door) - we managed to get it working for half an hour after we gave it some RAM and a hard drive (it came with none) before it froze. When we tried a restart we got the grey screen and a message which contained lots of Chinese symbols instructing you to power down the computer. Now we only get kernel panics. I've attached a pic of the panic in case any of you can decipher it. What's the next step?

Boot off your Apple Hardware Test Disc , then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Your model would have a separate AHT CD.

On my screen, the left side of the log is cut off.
But it looks like a machine check. If it also says uncorrected Error, it is likely to be a double-bit RAM memory error.
The Mac Pro uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory. Eight additional check bits are written with each 64-bit wide data word into memory, and checked when read out. There is enough information in the check bits that all single-bit errors can be corrected, and the Xeon processor does this on the fly. Uncorrectable errors cause a kernel panic, to avoid propagating the error and poisoning your data.
Check About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory ... for correct modules, sizes, and status other than "OK".

  • 10.6.8 kernel panic at startup (fixed)

**excuse my english since I'm french**
Like a lot of people, I've installed 10.6.8 through software update. And I've experimented kernel panic at startup. So, I unplugged everything (my two USB hubs with multiple peripherals) except the original Apple keyboard and Apple wired mouse. And restarted in safe mode. Downloaded Apple 10.6.8 combo update, install it and restart. Everything went fine. Great.
But as soon as I plugged back my USB hub, kaboom! here's come the Kernel Panic again.
So, one by one, I plug and unplug my peripherals. To discover that my old optical wired two button mouse (love that mouse ;-))) was THE problem. Even when it's plugged directly in one of the USB port on my Mac Pro. I've try with three different optical USB wired mouse, one Logitech, one Dell and one Verbatim (my old mouse): kaboom! Kernel Panic. With my Microsoft optical wireless mouse? No kernel panic. 10.6.8 crashes only with third partys wired mouses, except the Mac wired mouse.
    Voilà.
So, I'm stuck with the old wired Apple Mouse (that I hate). But no more kernel panic.
Hope my story can help someone.
And Apple, I missed my optical two buttons wired mouse. ;-))

I have the same problem, but only on one of the two iMacs that I updated to 10.6.8.
The first installation went smoothly, and I haven't had any trouble with the mouse or anything else on that iMac.  A Samsung color laser printed continues to work just fine.
The second installation seemed to have a hiccup -- after I had authorized the update there was a second update screen.  That sequence finished with a kernel panic, which continued through several attempts until I unplugged the Logitech laser mouse.
That Logitech mouse  works perfectly on the first updated  iMac, and the other Logitech mouse from that computer causes a kernel panic on the troublesome iMac.
I'm now using an Apple bluetooth mouse, which I'm getting used to - but I would still prefer the option of my good old Logitech mouse.
Another problem is that I can't print to a networked Konica-Minolta bizhub C451.  Tried the combo 10.6.8 updater and reinstalled the Konica driver -- but still no dice.

  • Final Cut Pro Kernel Panic on all Playouts

This is one of the logs generated. Have done re-install on second drive to no avail. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I discovered the processor upgrade had not been downclocked as promised before delivery. Once I did it, all my problems went away.

  • Kernel Panic - invalid backlight duty cycle - after upgrade from 10.5.2 on macbook air A1237

Here is the short version. I bought an older orignial Macbook Air Model A1237. The hinges had been damaged, and the screen would not display correctly - it had lines all across it and you could not see what you were doing. Anyway - I replaced the screen, hard drive, logic board, upper case, pretty much everything in sucession in an effort to get the MBA up and running again and get rid of the kernel panic I keep getting, all Apple replacement OEM parts. I bought a replacement screen - making sure I checked compatibility etc.. but when it started up I felt great perfect view - all was good - then it kernel paniced. I finally figured out that if I turned up the backlight manually all the way to max or if the ambient sensor made the backlight go to max - these were the only time I get a panic. Otherwise it runs perfeclty. The odd thing is I bought the original MBA disc that would have came with the MBA brand new - and if I wipe the hard drive and install leopard 10.5.2 from the dics and do not update anything - it works 100% perfectly no kernel panic at all. If I updgrade beyond the 10.5.2 I get the panic back. So that tells me its not the hardware, and I have confirmed the hardware and firmware are all up to date, as I was hoping it would be that easy a fix of updating the firmware.  I have tried everything - googled everything - I am at the end of my rope on this one - please help.
In addition to all the repair work - i have tried test user, upgrading to snow leopard and lion, taking to the apple store, everything I can do , with no solid answer  - the apple store told me it was hardware. But if it was then 10.5.2 should generate the panic as well.  There are lots of articles and posts on other forums on this very issue - usually surrounding having the MBA display repaired and then they started getting the panics thereafter - but no one has ever recieved an answer either at all, or that works.
Here is the KP log below - please let me know your thoughts - id like to upgrade to lion to get the most out of the MBA - any help is appreciated - - - - - heres the log - - - - ( the reason the BSD states at loginwindow is the ambient sensor at that time kicks in and creates the panic ):

So I found a post on a random forum that offered a fix that I have tried and it worked. Background: I had a cracked LCD screen on a A1237, and I replaced a new screen and a battery. I started getting kernel panics when the brightness went to the highest level. Anyways, what you do is you need to get this file from a apple os x 10.5:
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
    then:
Install the .kext file you just grabbed by dragging it into Kext Utility (which can be downloaded here: http://cvad-mac.narod.ru/index/0-4)
    then:
Shut down the machine. Reset SMC and PRAM (SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964, PRAM:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
and the problem is fixed. If you google a bit, you can find an os x 10.5.2 AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext file at to use.
The original fix I found was posted here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=880800
    Edit:
Just to clarify, my mac book air is running snow leopard 10.6.8, and I inserted the file from a 10.5.2. The fix completely eliminated the problem, now I can turn the brightness to max without the kernel panic.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro experiencing Kernel Panics when using iPhone 4 as modem

Recently purchased a custom MacBook Pro 15" with the upgraded 2.3 ghz quad core i7 processor. I immediately installed 8 GB of Ram and a 750GB 7200 speed HD from OWC when the unit arrived. All was well when testing from home, and had zero issues after using the Mac assistant to pull apps and user data from my old MBP, which I then sold on ebay.
Brought my new MBP to work, where I use my iPhone 4 (not jailbroken) to data share, using the personal hotspot. I connect the iPhone 4 to the MBP via USB, to keep the battery on the iPhone 4 charged.
While at work, I almost immediately started getting chain Kernel Panics on the new MBP. After hard powering down and restarting, the Kernel Panics would return at unpredictable intervals, sometimes an hour or more, sometimes within seconds of booting. I immediately suspected the RAM from OWC, as bad ram is the leading cause of Kernel Panics, according to a quick google search. So here is what I did in order, although keep in mind that this took place over a period of weeks, where I would intermittently go days w/out a Kernel Panic, and I was going crazy trying to figure this out.
    1. Took apart machine and re-seated OWC Ram-did not fix
    2. Attempted to confirm OWC RAM was bad before sending back to OWC, moved to step 3
    3. Put Apple Hardware Test DVD in and let it run the extended hardware test in loop mode over a weekend (72 hours), with no report of any hardware failure
    4. Some reports on the internet seemed to indicate the Apple Hardware test was not always reliable in discovering bad ram, so I purchased memtest, which I then looped and ran for 12 hours to test ram, with no report of failure.
    5. Performed clean install of OS X 10.6 from Apple DVD, to include wiping the drive-Kernel Panics remained.
    6. Removed OWC ram and installed Apple original Ram-Kernel Panics remained
    7. Realized that at home I was on WiFi, and was not getting Kernel Panics (at least none that I could remember over the course of 2 weeks)
    8. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via USB as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics occurred regularly.
    9. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via WiFi as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics have not returned (running 6 hours so far w/out Kernel Panic)
At the beginning I had a Kensington Turbo Mouse connected as well, but over time I unplugged it to remove it from my troubleshooting list. At this point I must conclude that when using the iPhone 4 to data share over USB is the cause of my Kernel Panics.
All of the above was the long winded version of, my iPhone 4 is crashing my Mac. I just wanted interested parties to know what I've done already before suggestions are made.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone using their iPhone 4 to data share and connecting via USB w/out experiencing Kernel Panics? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas as to why this would occur?
FWIW, I've tried more than one USB cable to connect the iPhone to my MBP, and experienced Kernel Panics w/ both cables. I also fully restored my iPhone 4 when the recent 4.3 iOS update was released, so I don't think it's a software issue w/ the iPhone. I do not have a second iPhone 4 to test with, I also do not have a second Mac to test with.
Thanks up front for your thoughts and/or assistance.
    Bill

    Hi everyone !
I'm new on this forum (and French btw, so I apologize in advance for any mistake (: )
I've bought the brand new MBP 13' few weeks ago, and I kept having this problem until now, I just installed K64 Enabler, and it seems to work perfectly, so I wanted you all to know it
Thanks for all the help you brought me !
Hope Apple will fix this once for all !
    See you !

  • I'm getting a kernel panic that I can't figure out

I have a power mac g4 1.25 with 1.5 ram. I'm getting a kernel panic that I can't figure out. I have changed the graphic card, ram, logic board, keyboard and mouse. It happens right when it starts and sometimes 5 minutes after I log in. I erased and reinstalled the operating system, and threw away the bootx file which I read could work, that didn't work. I have and older power mac g4 which has the same kind of hard drive, so I swapped them and the hard drive in the kernel panic computer work fine in the older Mac. I have tried to start up on the disc that came with the computer to do a hardware test but it wont last long enough to run the test. I have even started up in target disk mode and got a kernel panic. Also fixed disk permissions and verified the disk still no good. Did I miss something? I think it is the Processors but I would like to know for sure.
    Please Help
    Thank You

Kernal panics are usually caused by a hardware problem - frequently RAM or USB devices. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?

  • Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related

    Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
    thought it might be RAM.
    ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
    thank you.
(this from another new snow leopard install)

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • Kernel Panic on Mac Pro 1,1

Hi all, I've searched these boards for some time now, but don't seem to be finding an answer to my questions...
    *The Unit:*
    +MacPro1,1 - Dual-Core Intel Xeon - 2.66 GHz - 4 GB - ROM-version: MP11.005D.B00 - SMC-version (systeem): 1.7f10 – External Hardware: ACD (USB and FW plugged in) Apple non aluminium USB Keyboard and Wacom A5 Wide pen tablet.+
This particular Mac has been in for repairs on the videocard, a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. The symptoms related to that problem are from a different nature, so I don't think the card has gone bad again.
    *The Problem:*
Having kernel panics regularly for some time now (3 last week). I couldn't determine what it was other than broken RAM (I had 6 slots 2*1GB; 4*512MB of original Apple Ram). I tested this RAM using Rember overnight. When I entered the office, the Mac had the grey curtain all over the screen. So this was replaced last monday with 2*2GB Crucial Apple certified RAM. It ran good for 2 and a half days — just got a new Kernel Panic. So... not the RAM, but then what?
The Kernel Panics had all sorts of BSD processes connected to the problem. The last one (which I unfortunately send to Apple before saving it in a txt file) stated Adobe inDesign as the problem. Other panics pointed at window server, wacom driver and so on, I haven't seen a lot of the same processes passing by, it's a different process most of the time.
These are some other Panics I saved, could you please take a look at it and give me an idea of what the problem might be? My Wacom is running the latest driver btw.

In case you need it......the usual offering.......
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.

  • Final cut pro make Mac pro kernel panic with RAM from other manufacturers

    hi all
if i installed RAM For mac Pro from 667MHz DDR2 fully buffered ECC RAM from other manufacturers
final cut pro (just final cut)
make the machine kernel panic messege
all programs working good (like adobe and other compositing program) but final cut freez the machine and kernel panic
    the standard RAMs good

    Ahmed:
You can try visiting/searching the Expanding your Power Mac G5 forum. You'll find A LOT of help about RAM issues.
Any RAM brand must work but you maust be sure it follows the MAc specs. Some brand sites have good product locator by computer manufacturer/model (i.e. Kingston and Crucial). In fact there is no Apple branded RAM, they use a lot of different ones.
Inside FCP settings you'll find how to manage the memory that the program use, but that settings depends on the total quantity of memory you have installed, and you didn't post that information.

The solution I found, was right click the option in the AEBS Airport Utility to change the unit to broadcast in G only.  The AEBS was set to broadcast in G/N, etc., but the laptop could only receive G and below speeds.  No kernel panics after using the right click method in that setting to show "other" possibilities than the defaults listed.
