Kernel parameter settings ,OS patches and packages

Hello,
We are going to install 11.2.0.3 on Oracle Solaris 11(Sparc 64bit).
There is no kernel settings information for solaris 11 in installation guide.
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24346/pre_install.htm#CIHFICFD
Can we use the same solaris 10 kernel settings to solaris 11 ?
Also want to know the OS patches and packages for solaris 11.
Thank you,
Venkatesh

  • Determining OS Kernel parameter settings in HP ITANIUM

    Hi
Can any one help me out to determine the depedant OS kernel parameters settings in HP IA-64 for Oracle database 10.2.0.4 after increasing the processes parameter value in the database level .
As after increasing the processes parameter to 10000 , we are getting n number of issues related to one or the other OS kernel parameter , so we want to take one single downtime and settle all the issues.
    Regards,
    Phani Kumar P

    Hi
Acutally we already increased the processes parameter to 10000 by modifying nproc value to 30000 , now we are receiving issues respect to database as below and inturn there is problem in getting connected to the database giving ora-12502 error
    Errors in file /ora/newdump/ACEPROD/udump/aceprod1_ora_4712.trc:
ORA-00603: ORACLE server session terminated by fatal error

  • SAP Bundle Patches and Automatic Oracle parameter check script (note117165)

After reading SAP note 1027012 on SAP Bundle Patches and SAP note 1171650 on the
automatic Oracle parameter check script I have a simple question:
Is it still necessary to manually check whether some patch is installed in order to determine
exactly which event and fixcontrol to set?
Or is the automatic Oracle parameter check script so sophisticated that it is fully
sufficient to implement its recommendations, and you don't neet to manually
check any more which SBP with which bugfixes has been installed?
It would be great if SAP could confirm that the automatic parameter check is sufficient,
but so far I haven't seen this statement explicitly. I believe this is mostly because it
is so difficult (impossible?) to determine via SQL which patches have been applied.
    Regards,
    Mark

    >
    > Is it still necessary to manually check whether some patch is installed in order to determine
    > exactly which event and fixcontrol to set?
    Yes and No.
until now, fixcontrol are dependent of CBO patches and those are "register" on the view v$system_fix_control. They can be "check" autmatically, so you get the "proper" recommendation for those.
the parameter event depends on different situations, like some patches. But those patches are "normal" patches and it is not possible to check if they are installed from inside the DB with a simple script. For those, the check script will tell you to do it manually and will tell you which patch has to be check
In addition, there are other parameters that have to be check "manually", like processes (where you get a "semiautomatic" check) or db_cache_size, where you should check if the size

The automatic parameter check is sufficient, meaning that you get all information, including the parameters that you have to check manually and some information for that check. Currently, it is not possible to automatize it 100%

  • AIX related Parameter settings...

This is related to BW 3.1C on AIX 5.2 (pSeries 690) and Oracle.
We are at 64-bit 6.40 kernel patch 66 and SAP_Basis and SAP_ABAP is patch level 47.
My question is specific to AIX related parameters as I am not able to find a very good information from notes.
I am reviewing a Earlly Watch report and not able to understand the AIX specific parameter.
    Following parameters are my concern.
    EM/TOTAL_SIZE_MB - 262144 MB (recommended 26301 MB)
    ES/SHM_MAX_PRIV_SEGS - 64 (recommended 8)
    ES/SHM_PROC_SEG_COUNT - 63 (recommended 7)
    ES/SHM_SEG_COUNT - 4096 (no recommendation)
    ES/SHM_USER_COUNT - 4096 (no recommendation)
ES/TABLE - SHM_SEGS (no recommendation and I understood the purpose of this parameter.)
    ES/SHM_SEG_SIZE - 256 (recommendation 2048)
Our Physical memory is 32Gb and OS Swap is 26GB. As this is AIX, do I have to worry about the parameter <b>em/initial_size_MB</b>. it is set to 4Gb and we are planning to increase to 8GB. No recommendation SAP. but when you multiply <b>ES/SHM_SEG_SIZE * ES/SHM_MAX_PRIV_SEG</b>S, it comes to 16GB. So should I have to extended memory <b>em/initial_size_MB</b> to 16Gb or the <b>EM/TOTAL_SIZE_MB</b> will take care of it. I have read the IBM redBook that ES model ignores the <b>em/initial_size_MB</b> (Do not knwo what do they mean by this). Our model is <b>IBM eServer pSeries 690</b>.
I am just trying to find out the calculation/relation among these parameters to justify the team so that they are not off the limit.
Please help me and I will be really grateful to your advice.
Please let me know if you need more information.
    I will appreciate your help.
    Thank you.
    SC.

    Hello SC,
    To clarify further.
The relevant notes in one place for 64-bit AIX memory management
in one place are as follows for you kernel version:
#146289  Parameter Recommendations for 64-Bit SAP Kernel
#789477  Lots of Extended Memory on AIX (64-Bit) as of Kernel 6.20
#425207  SAP memory management, current parameter ranges
#153641  Swap space requirement for R/3 64-bit kernel
When settings mentioned in the attached notes are used for AIX
64-bit systems as recommended then only EM/TOTAL_SIZE_MB is used
for the total instance extended memory, em/initial_size_MB is
ingored and the only reason to set this to the new value of
note #95454 is for the SAPPFPAR information to be more accurate as
it is looking at value em/initial_size_MB as for other Unix platforms
    that don't use ES/TABLE = SHM_SEGS. The value em/initial_size_MB
will be ignored for all memory management settings purposes.
Because I suspect that ztta/roll_extension is set to 2GB then
the current values of ES/SHM_MAX_PRIV_SEGS and ES/SHM_PROC_SEG_COUNT
are not reached. The note #789477 goes into more details about
    these parameters.
If RAM resources are 32GB and no other instances is on the
server then the recommendation for EM/TOTAL_SIZE_MB is made
for 26301 MB so that this is the new pool for total EM for this
instance. According to note #789477 this can be higher in some cases
and even surpass the RAM but the Early Watch team have determined
that this is the correct value. Other recommendations should
be reviewed contained in note #789477 also.
In case of any errors similar to those of note #352604, I would
suggest you review the parameters mentioned there and in note
#789477 also about these potential errors that may occur in the
future for a heavily used instance.
The references to em/initial_size_MB for SAPPFPAR are related to the
segment count in total for AIX. This was very important for 32-bit
AIX systems as there was such a shortage of available segments
for pool 10, 40, SAPOSCOL and other keys. It was important to
get the sappfpar segments as close as possible to the real value
so that you could optimize the pools etc. I many cases the
recommendation was still to ignore the segment cound in sappfpar
and manually count the used segments but all this information is
redundant for you and doesn't apply.
There are no such shortages for 64-bit and so the value is of
little importance in this case. You should therefore set
em/initial_size_MB to the same value as EM/TOTAL_SIZE_MB just
so they match. The actual SAPPFPAR output for the pool 10 and 40
sizes will not be affected by this and therefore you can use
the recommendation here for the sizing of the parameters of each the pools.
    Regards, Mark

I suspected something like that, but the patch file is nowhere to be found (?).
You should add the file name to the source array and regenerate the md5sums.
How am I supposed to do this?

  • Oracle 10g on solaris 10 : kernel parameter warning

I am installing oracle 10g on Solaris 10.
I have a warning on kernel parameter missing (shminfo_shmmax for example) during the system check.
I understood that with the 10 version of solaris these parameters are replaced by ressources control and I have checked them. They are correctly setted.
Need I do something before continue the install to release the warning or can I bypass this issue and continue the install as I have no warning ?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Sorry for my english.

You are right. Since Solaris 10 kernel parameters settings in /etc/system is obsolete and some parameters are deprecated.
The steps how to configure required parameters you can find in my paper (step #1.): http://ivan.kartik.sk/oracle/install_ora10gR2_solaris.html
I bypass this issue and continue the install as I have no warning You can safely bypass this issue during installation process but you should set these parameters after installation.

  • Patching and backup process advice

    Hello all ,
I have solaris 8 and I had a few questions about patching and backup.
    1. Monthly I download the Sun 'Recommended and Security patchset", I then unzip and run patch_add.
When I review the terminal output while this is running I get quite a few :"unable to install patch exit code 8".
    Should I be getting this?
Is there another way of applying patches(other than individually)?
    2. What are good backup practices? Copy /etc and /var directories to a raid? Or is there a Sun tool for backups?
    Thanks for any advice!

I believe this is a list of exit codes for patches. You'll most likely see a lot of return code 8 and 2. Not typically an issue.
    # Exit Codes:
    # 0 No error
    # 1 Usage error
    # 2 Attempt to apply a patch that's already been applied

Back up your system before adding any patches (ufsdump). It's recommended that these patches are added in run level one.
There should be a script called something like "install_cluster" command in the 8_Recommended directory that you can use to add the patches.
By default the patches create backout info in /var, but I usually disable this (yeah, livin' on the edge) with the "-nosave" option.

I have downloaded kernel patch from Path at Service matket place ---<b>Support Packages and Patches" SAP Technology Components" SAP SOLUTION MANAGER" SAP SOLUTION MANAGER 3.2" Entry by Component" SAP Solution Manager-SAP KERNEL 6.40 32-BIT UNICODE-Windows Server on IA32 32bit-ORACLE-

    I followed following Steps:
    1. Copied the patch into a temporary directory on system.
    2. Unpacked the downloded SAPEXEDB_71-20000254.SAR Kernel Part II (for Basis 640/620)  71 patch .
    3. Stoped the SAP System using MMC.
    4. Saved the kernel directory by backup or by copying into a separate backup directory. (\usr\sap\<SAPSID>\sys\exe\run)
    5. Re-started the server.
After logging again in SAP client 000 on checking found server patch level coming same as previous one .
Its not got updated and due to this in Tcode- <b>SPAM</b> I am getting error message :<b>'The OCS package SAPKITL318 requires a kernel with Release 640 and patch number 71. The kernel you are currently using has a lower version.'</b>.
