Kextcache occasionally crashes on my system
Hi *,
about 2 or 3 times a week , I get a crash report for kextcache (see below).
I already tried disk+permission repair and safe boot (which rebuilt the caches),
but the problem is still there. Has anybody seen this before ?
Any ideas what I can do to analyze/fix this ?
Thanks in advance,
Olli

It could be caused by a corrupted cache file. There are two of them located in the /System/Library/ folder. One is extensions.mkext and the other's I don't recall but is a single file (not folder) maybe extensions.kextcache or some such. Delete both files and restart.

Back up all data.
Quit Skype if it’s running.
If you've installed any Skype-related system modifications such as "Call Recorder," uninstall them according to the developer's instructions. You may have to log out or reboot to complete the uninstallation. Test. If there's no change, take the steps that follow.
Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash, if they exist:
Caches/com.skype.skype
Saved Application State/com.skype.skype.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Skype again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
Step 2
If you still have problems, quit Skype again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
Application Support/Skype
Note: you are not moving the Skype application. You’re moving a folder named “Skype.”
Test. If Skype now works, delete the Skype folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit Skype again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.
Step 3
Move the following file from the Library folder to the Desktop:
Preferences/com.skype.skype.plist
Test again. This time Skype should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Recreate them.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Skype again and put the file you moved in step 3 back where it was. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting Skype and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup. -
Now over the course of the last 6-8 weeks i've noticed a few odd happenings with my macbook pro, seeming a slight slowing down with a few processes. The latest to my horror is an occasional slowing and inevitable crashing of the system leaving my screen pixelated, which forces me to restart, which seems to prove very difficult. The last time this happened (this morning) when I tried rebooting, the apple appeared slightly pixelated along with the "progress wheel" and at the point where it should have started up, the entire screen became pixelated like so:
http://www.divshare.com/download/5756786-179
I went through quite a number of attempts and it seemed to slowly correct itself, finally restarting without any pixelating on the apple, and then logging into OS X, starting up with a problem report:

System model name: MacBookPro3,1 (Mac-F42388C8)Hi Sherman, Welcome to Apple Support Forum.
Sorry to hear about your frustrating problem. It sounds like it might be due to a hardware issue because the problem starts before the software has a chance to load. But, before you take it into the shop here are some "rubber chicken" actions (with acknowledgment to Adam from the Maccast podcast) that you can do, then when the apple tech asks what you've done you can read of the list and maybe get further with your problem on the first visit.
Here goes.
Make a full an complete backup of all your data so that if your hard drive fails you can be up and running sooner. A carbon copy clone or Super Duper clone works well. Time machine will work too but it doesn't make a bootable drive.
1. Reset PRAM (hold command-option-p-r at bootup until you get another startup chime)
If that doesn't work then try:
2. reset SMC (turn off computer, unplug, remove battery, press and hold startup button for 5 - 10 seconds) there will not be any beeps or sound during this procedure
Still no joy? then maybe:
3. Remove and reseat ram, if no improvement, remove one ram module, recheck, if no improvement replace that ram module and remove the other ram module. If you only have one ram module then try replacing it with a new one or one borrowed from a working machine.
still frustrated?
4. Archive and install the system from the install DVD and run the combo updater.
didn't work?
5. Erase and install system, before you run combo update see if the problem persists, if not then run the combo updater. Don't add any 3rd party apps until you see that the machine is running normally. Then add one at a time and see if the machine works between each additional app.
If you do all that and you're still having problems then you can take the machine into the Apple tech and show him what you've done and what happened and you'll be a lot further towards getting a more in depth analysis done.
Hope this helps.

TS3276 How do I delete a large email that has crashed my mail system?
I have sent an email that is too large, and appears to have crashed the mail system. I have accidentally done this before, and got help from the call centre (they are closed today) but cannot remember how to fix the problem by deleting the large outgoing meassage.
How do I delete that message from the computer?Try sending it in the Apple Mail program. I just did that. It has a provision for sending large files through the cloud.
Following are the instructions. It's easy -

DW CC 2014.1 occasional crash
I installed the new version yesterday and I feel there has been improvement in the speed overal so well done to the engineers? Still not as good as past versions but getting there.
MY problem with the new version is that I am experiencing the occasional crash. Happens with no particular action that I can observe it just crashes. Not often but always at an in opportune time. Have recreated the cache and rebooted the mac but no change.
i Have MBP retina with lots of Ram on the latest Mavericks
any suggestions would be welcomedIt has been nearly 4 months since I raised this issue and sent the logs and still no reply from you Kusha or Peran regards this issue - it is driving me crazy and still not fixed in the latest (CC2014.1.1) release. I have noted that the crash appears to be confined to times when I select "Prieview in Browser" if this helps - some communication would be appreciated.

Aperture 3.4.5 crashes my whole system
I've upgraded to Aperture 3.4.5 and it crashes my whole system (21.5" iMac).
When it is opened all other apps become unresponsive and eventually the whole system hangs with the spinning ball.
I bought an iMac because I was sick of Windows crashing every time you asked it to do something - this I'm afraid is no better and definitely not what I was promised at the time of purchase.and a 1TB external drive for storage of photos
Is this drive formatted for Mac? If it is not formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled), Aperture may have problems and hang.
My system runs well when Aperture isn't running but as soon as I start it, the problems start.
Check, what Aperture is doing: Open the Activity Viewer (Aperture's main menu bar > Show Activity)
What does it show?
Is it constantly processing the same image or video?
Is Aperture faster, if you hold down the shift-key while launching Aperture? That will disable some of the background processing.
I've been through all the trouble-shooting and the upgrade was from version 3.4
Which exactly? It is hard to suggest something, if we do not know the results of the steps you tired already.

Time machine on Lion crashes the whole system when used with external HD
Hi all,
Anybody got the same problem? I did a Time Machine backup just before I did the upgrade to Lion (using an external USB HDD) after the upgrade (that went well in my opinion) when I ask TM to do another backup it stays on "Preparing" indefenately and ultimately crashes the whole system ( reset with ctrl+cmd+power button) is required otherwhise the system stays non reactive.
Regards,
IwanStart by verifying your internal HD, and repair your backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a possible way to cancel the backup. If that works, use the widget in #A1 there to display the backup messages from your logs. Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here. -
Stability issues, playback stutters, and occasional crashes with 8.1 update
Hi all, I'm having a bunch of weird stability issues with Premiere CC 8.1 on Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5. I'm working on a medium sized 1080p project with about 60-80 pieces of media totaling about 60GB. Footage was from a DSLR and was transcoded into prores 422 for editing.
Initially after updating to 8.1 and creating my project I didn't notice any issues but after progressing further in the edit and adding additional video tracks, titles, and a couple small AE comps I've noticed a pretty drastic falloff in performance. I will get occasional crashes and playback is slow to respond. After pressing spacebar or L it'll hang for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute before actually playing back. During playback it'll get caught up and hang and I have to stop playback and wait a bit for things to return to normal. I'm also experiencing performance issues scrubbing through footage in my project bins.
I've tried some basic troubleshooting like cache clearing, preference trashing, video driver updating, and un- and reinstalling to no avail. It'll sometimes work ok but usually displays most of the above issues. I've been using premiere for a bit over a year now and haven't experienced any of these issues on my other older machines, let alone my new MBP. Premiere is usually very snappy and misbehaves rarely.
Technical bits:
Premiere CC (2014) v8.1
15" Retina MacBook Pro
Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.5
2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
1TB Apple SSDHi Ian,
Is it possible to reinstall your GPU drivers? I have heard that this might be at the heart of this issue. Also, trash preferences. Here is the full list I'm asking Mac folks to try.
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
Update any GPU drivers
Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
Delete media cache
Remove plug-ins
Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
Disconnect any third party hardware
Reboot
Report back if anything here worked for you.
Thanks,

Every few uses of Firefox, I click the icon to open the program, and my system freezes. Ctrl+Alt+Delete does nothing, Ctrl+Shift+Esc does nothing. The mouse won't move, keyboard non-functioning. I have to do a hard reset of my system (hold power button until it shuts off, restart). No crash report is generated/shown/submitted, probably because my computer freezes before Firefox can even open.
This does not happen with any other program, only Firefox. Running Windows 7 64-bit.
I have to fill out this form on Internet Explorer, because now after restarting my computer firefox won't open at all, regardless of which icon i click.I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6. -
Catalyst 10.10 - Xorg 1.9.2 crash and random system freezes
Hello.
I have Radeon HD4650 AGP graphics card.
I have up to date(no testing repos) Archlinux.
I installed catalyst 10.10 from AUR - http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111.
Everything is ok, but two problems:
1) When I switching TTY(eg. Ctrl-Alt-F6) while loading KDE(OpenGL splash is running) Xorg crashes:

X: page allocation failure
in kernel.log.
Can anyone has tips or workarounds for this bugs (or just catalyst proprietary driver is piece of sh*t?)?
Can anyone help?I guess I have the same issue ( https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=108083 ). I removed the catalyst package and installed the open source driver (packages: xf86-video-ati and ati-dri) as a workaround to wait until the issue is resolved. If you want to do that, remember to update your xorg.conf (you can simple rename that... it's not needed with ati driver) and rc.conf (unblacklist the radeon module). Maybe downgrading to Xorg 1.8 and installing older driver would help. Hopefully somebody with greater knowledge will notice this problem.

After update to IOS 7x some apps are crashing a lot & system Reboots!
After installing IOS 7.1.1 on 1 x iPhone 4 16GB, 3x iPhone 4s 64GB and 1 iPad mini 64GB, Apps started crashing which worked well on IOS 5.5 & IOS 6. After Updating to IOS 7, the problems started. Some of my favourite games like "Call Of Duty: Black Ops Zombies"and Avengers Initiative keep crashing at the start. "Call Of Duty" reported Low Memory even though I turned off Background App Refresh, Re-downloaded the Apps, performed full system reboot, enabled "Reduce Motion", enabled "Increase Contrast" and still no luck. I have also deleted many of my Apps to free up storage space but still no improvement. Other problems major problems are that the screen freezes and Apps become unresponsive requiring a full system reboot. This happens very often and also when trying to update or download Apps the system crashes and often Reboots itself. I believe the main problem is with low memory because I ran an App called "Battery Doctor" which shows that 82% of the 512MB RAM is already been used before any Apps have even been started leaving only 89MB of free RAM which is hardly enough to run decent Games on. There are many occasions when FaceTime wouldn't allow Sign In and in iTunes Apps would revert to how they were after applying changes. When adding Contacts, changes would often revert back. Also I have noticed that the iPhone sometimes would display the wrong amount of free Storage space and it would sometimes show like 5GB available and then go to 0MB available and cause crashes during downloads. Another problem I found was that when Apps start up, a white patch shows on the screen temporarily which wasn't apparent before IOS 7x. When adding contacts I noticed that with "Increase Contrast" disabled, some of the entries added did not display while typing with the keyboard and the text was greyed out making it difficult to read what you are typing. Now I wish that I had not updated to IOS 7 as suggested because it has messed up my £700 iPhones and I don't see a way of downgrading without Jailbreaking making my phones worthless. We are very very upset and disappointed because we paid so much money for the devices and have not had them long. We do not want to buy a newer device just because of the update messing up our phones. Also I do not want to try and restore from a previous backup because the last few times I've tried and it does not restore everything. It is very time consuming and I am too ill to go through all that again on each device. Also I believe the restore does not give me the choice of going back to IOS 5.5 or IOS 6. Therefore if Apple could give the opportunity to update to IOS 5.5 or IOS 6 for older devices and have a separate update for IPhone 5s which have a faster processor and double RAM (1GB) then I would be very grateful. I would also like to add the fact that IOS 7.x.x drains the battery very quickly. After reading the many complaints about IOS 7 update & my personal experience, I now regret updating and also fear that future updates may render my iPhones useless. I bought my iPhone 4s direct from Apple and paid a premium for Factory Unlocked iPhones. I think the iPhones may now be out of warranty and are very unhappy with this situation. Please, please please could you send a fix in another update!
Actually DIESEL they do force you to update. my wife has not update hers yet to ios6 and none of the apps work at full tilt anymore because they are all updated for ios 6....Apple is now making you either update(and ruin your iphone 4s) or buy the new iphone 5(which i doubt will have any of the problems people with iphone 4s are having).
Since updating my 4s i have lost signal, data has been very low at best. i can not access any apps or they open up and do not refresh. I use to have 4bars at my work and now i have 1. -

Photoshop CS4 has started crashing my entire system
Hey there, hopefully I can find a solution here that doesn't involve a full system dump and reinstall.
Photoshop started crashing on my today but not just the App - it takes down my whole system forcing me to do a "hold the power button for 5 seconds" shutdown and restart. The first crashes were when trying to convert a medium complexity selection into a work path. Then. after giving up on that even just opening an image, converting it into a layer so I could use the transform tool. As soon as I hit "cmd-T" the app locks and the system crashes forcing me to reset via the power button.
Nothing has changed, I haven't installed anything, downloaded anything, nothing at all. I'm on an iMac running the full master collection, Intel, maxed out RAM......CS4 has been running flawlessly since installation up until this. (Installed a few months ago). I reinstalled Photoshop from the disks but same thing happened.
Help?Chris Cox wrote:
I've got a 4870 in my MacPro (here at home, the one I'm typing on now) - and zero crashing with OpenGL on.
It is good to know that it's working well on your system, Chris. Any suggestions for those of us who are having a problem? Since we know it's neither universal nor isolated, what's the next step in diagnosing? I have no idea how to start nailing down what's at the root of the problem, but would really like to solve it -- or at the very least, help Adobe and/or Apple figure out what might be going on.
And if your symptoms are not EXACTLY the same as the original poster in a topic
: please start a new topic instead of adding confusion to the current topic.
Okay, sure, I didn't know that's how this forum works. Some forums prefer that you not make a new topic for every single issue or question if it's possibly related to another one already being discussed. I'll gladly restart this as a new one if you think that's best at this point, or maybe an admin can split it off since it's grown already. Sorry about that.
(Just as a delicate side note: I'm sure it can be extremely frustrating reading tons of complaints by anonymous folks, many of which are off base and impolitely worded. I don't envy the position at all, especially if I were one of the creators of a product as amazingly powerful, intelligent, and elegant as Photoshop. But for anyone representing Adobe in any way, it may be a good idea not to simply accuse a polite poster of "adding confusion," without at least politely apologizing for misreading/mischaracterizing the poster's post. My post itself was indeed perfectly clear about what was crashing. A simple, "Sorry I misread your post; for clarity, we prefer that you start a new topic so different issues don't get confused," etc. would be great. Sure, a really minor thing, but it may help keep people happy with the company instead of thinking they're a little rude or dismissive. I sincerely appreciate your posting here.)
Anyway, as I finished typing this I saw your last reply to Brizdale (via email alert). So, is there any way for us to diagnose whether it's a driver or hardware issue? Or do we just have to wait for -- apparently -- Apple? Or AMD?
Thanks again. -
I've tried reinstalling it. Didn't help. It crashed when I was exporting 111 photos, then I only did 20 at a time and it didn't crash, but it crashed 4 times while I was editing the session. What should I do?
I tested it, its fine...my whole system is fine. Lightroom is the only
program that acts like this. Otherwise my system is good to go.What else? -
Photo Booth Crashes My Whole System
And yet... iChat works fine with my camera and never has issues
OKay, so I've googled, searched the discussions... and haven't found anybody with the same issue
Not only does photobooth crash, but my entire system is crashed to where I'm told to power down (hold power button for x seconds...) and then reboot... weird
I don't know if its just my dumb luck?
Not that I really needed Photo Booth for anything, was just screwing around and figured I'd give it a try, but it seems silly to crash the whole machine -- and its been this way since the app first installed....
Any ideas or needs for further clarification?
OH and I've tried this running nothing but the finder (and other such background apps) and Photo Booth, nothing else and still the same issueIf repairing permissions doesn't help, I would consider reinstalling the app as an optional install from the installation DVD. If you do, download and apply the combo updater to bring it back up to date (but I don't think there were changes to Photo Booth).
Does anything interesting appear in the console log when it crashes?
