Keyboard problem: some keys seem to be linked.

Example: if I press the 1 key it turns the volume up. It just happened minutes ago. Please help!

Something is seriously wrong with this.
Yes. It sounds like a hardware problem. Try an external keyboard and/or try booting from the Install DVD or Recovery partition and test. If the symptom is the same, next stop is the Apple Store or AASP.

thinkpad keyboard problem - some keys generate multiple keys when pressed
For example, "t" generates "tr", "y" generates "yu", "backspace" generates "backspace" plus "IBM access connections", "m" generates "mn" and "n" generates "mn".  Not all keys are wrong.
For what it's worth, the odd behaviour started shortly after a trip to Miami in which I had a meeting at a cafe in which we were undercover but it was pouring cats and dogs - it was like having a meeting in a sauna - so I am wondering if the high humidity could have caused the behaviour.
I tried replacing the keyboard but the new keyboard has the same problem.
The machine in question is a Thinkpad T23 running Windows XP Pro
Any help would be appreciated as I am now in Los Angeles using a borrowed Mac! :-)

i have something along the lines of the same problem.

  • Laptop Keyboard problem, some keys get randomly ignored

    Hello,
This is a problem that occurs with all razer blade notebooks when running linux (does not occur in Windows 8); some keys get randomly ignored when you type at your normal speed, and it is very frustating especially when typing passwords or programming. At the moment we have to type very slowly in order to get all keystrokes caught. The keyboard has antighosting technology, maybe that info is useful.
This is the further we went in this post:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161634
In that post, a forum partner proposed to modify "drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c" and set "interval = 1;" right after the mouse pooling interval was set, around line 1134 of the file. When we use that modified kernel, the keyboard feels a little better but i still get ignored keys when typing at normal speed.

Does anyone know, based on their experience, what could be the cause of the keyboard malfunction?
Does this type of error occur for some other notebooks too?
It would be great if someone could point me in the right direction for where to look.

Hi. Well in this case the problem is with the Razer Blade Laptop's keyboard, therefore i cannot choose another port. You gave me an idea however, i will try to get any usb keyboard, plug it into the razer blade and make sure it works so that i can discard any major problem.

  • G60 keyboard has some keys which do not work.

Bottom row and qwerty row all have the outside keys not working. the two center keys on each row work fine. Could this be the keyboard or an asic on the MB?

    Hi,
While this could be a hardware issue, it's always worth trying the following.
Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook and see if this will launch the Start-up Menu.  If it does, select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.

    Hi Rod--
MANY thanks! Your suggestion fixed the problem!
I use PickChar on my iMac to simplify handling of esoteric font characters. Its overhead menu symbol at the upper right of my desktop usually shows the American flag (for the English setting). I just noticed that the symbol had somehow spontaneously changed to the French flag (and the French setting). I switched it back to the English setting and all is fixed and okay with the keyboard.
    Phew! I had thought that maybe I had a bad keyboard. . . .
    Best regards,

  • DROID Physical Keyboard Problem - All keys don't work!

Like many others, I switched to VZW in December from an iPhone so using a virtual keyboard was familiar to me - however, I had tried using the physical keyboard but noticed that not all the keys work (i.e. the space bar, backspace (delete)).  I simply wrote it up as quirk and thought it was something that would be corrected in a future update (2.0 -> 2.1).  Now 2.2 is about to be pushed any day now and rather that be optimistic that it's a firmware issue, has anyone else had this problem?
I've done a factory reset on the device so it currently has nothing but the stock applications that it came with; so it can't be a market app that's causing an issue.

Hi.  I am sorry you are having issues with your keyboard and I will be happy to help you from here.  I haven't had issues with my keyboard at all.   How long has this been going on?  It sounds like a hardware issue that we can help you with by going into the local store.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
    Thanks!

  • Final Cut Pro 7 keyboard problem, losing key commands/shortcuts

    Hi Everyone,
I installed Final Cut Studio 3 on my new iMac.
When i open FCP 7 I assign a shortcuts to keyboard layout, but when I close and re-open FCP 7 my commands/shortcuts will be lost...
If I save my layout and I load the profile saved, same thing, shortcuts will be lost.
With my old final cut 6 I never had this problem.
    There are any solutions?
    Thank everyone!

    Thank you mishmumken,
I found this Partially solutions for this problem, I think is a apple Bug, I wait for any fix:
Solution for Studio 2 AND Studio 3:
    1) Each time you start your computer, go to System Settings - International
    2) Change the language from your language to English
    3) Change the language from English to your language
    4) Start FCP
    5) Your shortcuts and the FCP shortcuts work OK
You have to do this each time you restart the computer. People working with the English language setting don't have this problem.
This bug is about 2 years old. Shame on Apple for not solving the problem!!!

  • Keyboard problems! Keys will not advance. How to fix?

How to get key strikes to advance?

If you are saying that when you press a few keys, they each overtype the previous keys, your Mac OS X is really messed up.
You will at least need a Re-Install, and possibly an erase and re-install. For that you need Backups, so that should be top priority.

  • Keyboard problem, 'linked' keys

    Hey there,
    I'm having problems with the keyboard on my Mid '11 15" MacBook Pro. Some keys appear to be 'linked' to others. For example; typing a '1' also presses the 'volume up' (F12`) key. Here's some other examples (I'm only typing the numbers here, the symbols are typing themselves);
    2`

    4]
    5[
    6=
Also the up arrow key types a 9 and the right arrow key types an 8
I've checked the language/mapping setup and all appears to be normal. I've also checked the 'Keyboard Viewer' which shows the behaviour I detailed above, two keys being pressed at the same time.
I've done an Apple Hardware Test which came back clean, repaired permissions, done the usual PRAM/SMC reset and nothing has fixed it. The laptop hasn't suffered any impact or anything, it literally just started happening this morning.
Any ideas before I make an appointment at the Genius Bar? I've just had this MacBook Back a month ago after the HDD failed, and I really don't fancy losing another two days cloning my HDD or reinstalling all my software.
    Specs are: 10.6.8, 2.2Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, HD6750, 750GB HDD.
    Thanks!

Likely Tom Gewecke is right. But two other things you could try.
    (1) Try a different user account, or the Guest account. Same problem?
    (2) Try booting from another device (eg, SL DVD). Same problem?
If a different account doesn't show the issue, then the problem is most likely software, and it's in the user domain.
If another boot device doesn't show the same problem, it may be a software issue; but I don't know how you could fix it other than re-installing the OS.

  • HT3964 Backlit keyboard: some keys are brighter than others. Can this be fixed?

I spilled a small amount of liquid on the key board, but I quickly dried it and everything works fine except the keyboard. Some keys are brighter than others, what should I do?

Hope that it is the only problem that you will have with your MBP.  Liquids have a habit of quickly migrating and you may or may not have gotten it all.  I would take it to an Apple genius bar and have them check it out.  That does not mean that your MBP will not suffer a premature death.
As far as the keyboard is concerned, pose that question to the genius bar technician.. I suspect you will be told that the only way to rectify the problem is to install a new one.
    Ciao.

  • Keyboard to replace keys

I have my computer for 2 weeks now and my daughter used it dropped cigareete ash on the keys O and P and they are melted....Can I get these replaced on any keyboard?  These keys seem so thin and not like the standard keyboard keys....Please help this is my 50th birthday present and I love it.  I am afraid the O key has a raised up melted part that might hurt my screen when I shut it (close)....

    Morning
I would contact HP and advise them of what happened.. they might be able to have the whole keyboard replaced. You could also check online for some indiviual keys but they are not always easy to get.
    HP Contact page is http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/contact-hp/contact.html

  • Shift+ some keys missed in jumanji, dwm on Sony Vaio F12

I have a strange issue on my Sony Vaio F12. Shift + some keys seem to become <some keys> only. For example Shift+space in jumanji is interpreted as Space only. Shift+Mod4+Ctrl+Q in dwm isn't caught properly, while Shift+Mod4+Enter is. xev seem to get it right, though. The state is 0x0 when pressing Space only, and 0x1 at Shift+Space.
(Note: I'm currently moving to a fresh Arch install (x86_64) on a new computer. These key combinations, including the dwm one, worked fine on my old 32bit install on a Dell XPS m1330, so the configs should be right).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the suggestion about customizing function keys, however, since the keys currently do nothing there's nothing to be re-mapped. (Such as VolumeUp => Page Up.)
As far as I can tell, use of the Fn key actually blocks the arrow key press events on the Yoga, so not even Up, Down. Left, Right presses are received by the OS if/when the function key is pressed. (This be can verified in any basic text editing program such as Notepad. Additionally, I wrote a program to display any/all received key events and confirmed no event occurs in such cases.)
The keyboard firmware or driver must be receiving the key state changes but simply ignores any arrow key event if the function key is pressed. I suspect any change to this behavior would have to come from the firmware or driver, which currently intercepts the hardware button presses before the OS may have a chance to redirect them. So I think the Lenovo hardware/software guys would have to enable this, which I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
I like the use of the function key in conjunction with the arrows because that way I don't need to move my fingers off the arrow keys in order to move the text cursor to the beginning or end of a line. (I certainly still find the fixed Home and End keys on the keyboard necessary.)
(Oh, and I apologize for inserting an image >50k, I didn't know the forum rules concerning a maximum image size.)

  • Login / keyboard problem

I have a powerbook G4, running Tiger, with latest install 10.4.6. I am locked out of the computer, and need a solution.
My young son randomly typed a few keys while I was using MS powerpoint, and the keyboard stopped working properly. (this occurred the day after installing the latest OS X update). The number keys work OK, however, the letter keys on the left of the keyboard didn't do anything, and the ones on the right would result in numbers being displayed (e.g. in MS Word, powerpoint). everything else seemed to be working OK. I restarted the computer in the hopes that it would solve the problem, but on reaching the login screen the same problem persists, and since I cannot type in a password correctly (doh!), it's now impossible to even login.
How can I login, and solve the keyboard problem. It seems to me that the manner in which the problem occurred, seems more software related (?).
    Thanks in advance.
    Rob

Ok - solved the problem - num lock (F6) was turned on (never noticed it before, or knew of its function). doh!

  • Some keys not working on wired full keyboard

I recently got hold of a new-style wired keyboard that has the numeric keypad. When I plug it in most of the keys work fine, but the "return" and "caps lock" keys seem to do nothing. I think mechanically they are okay, I suspect there's some kind of key mapping problem.
I've checked the Input Sources section in System Preferences but selecting things like "US Extended" seems to have no effect.

    Hello:
    Who manufactures the
new-style wired keyboard that has the numeric keypad
If it is third-party, the manufacturer is the best source of information.
