Knitting machines motion control system
Hi,
My question is related to the Textile industry application. We are working on a servo mechanism of a knitting machine for textile industry. Is there anybody can help me in giving some of the similar applications tailor made using NI motion platforms? Typical motor parameters are enclosed. We need to workout a miniaturized motion solution which is a part of knitting machine. This knitting machine is responsible in identifying any broken strings.
Quick response is highly appreciated.

Rao,
could you please provide some information about the typical motion control tasks, that are required for your application? How many axes are involved? What type of synchronisation do you need (vector spaces, camming, gearing,...)? How fast do your axes move?
Do you have experience with NI products like LabVIEW, NI-SoftMotion and cRIO?
I don't have any experience with knitting machines, but I have a decent level of motion control related project experience. So if you could help me to better understand your application's requirements and your individual backgroudn with NI products, this will help me to give you better advice.
Thanks and kind regards,
Jochen Klier

In a motion Control System, What is a following error?
I am trying to understand what a "Following Error" is. I get the error number 70150 which is called a following error. When trying to execute the find home VI in the NI library
The following error only occurs in closed loop systems. It is simply the difference, in counts, between the commanded trajectory position and the actual feedback position. A good way to characterize your following error is to go into the Advanced menu of the 1-D Interactive portion of MAX, run your motors at a very low velocty (1 rpm), and watch the Following Error indicator. If it is increasing slow and steady, then you probably have the encoder resolution wrong. If it jumps up in spurts, then the encoder may be damaged. If it is increasing very fast, then either the encdoder isn't plugged in, the encoder isn't working at all, or the encoder is plugged in backwards.
I hope this helps.

Simple straight line motion control with brushless motor and encoder/microswitch
I want to go build a motion control system/program using labview. I have a brushless motor and a controller and a National instrument DAC (NI USB-6009). This is how my system looks like: receive an input signal 4-20mA, this should be converted to 0-5V for the controller for speed, controller should move motor till it hits micro switch. The micro switch/encoder should generate a signal (5V) back to shut the controller. I want to record the position of the motor in labview. How do I do this? How do I set the system up? Thank you in advance
Controller from anaheimautomation: MDC151-050301
Motor:BLWSG234D-36V-4000-R3
Controller and motor go together.
The input signal for the system will be 4-20mA. Using this signal I will correlate it to a specific voltage which will drive the speed of the motor. This will displace the lead screw linearly. I will have a microswitch that will be triggered by screw and will relay a signal to shut the motor. I want find a way to record the position of the shaft/leadscrew at that specific point. I want to identify a home position, halfway position and full length travel position. I will use 3 swiches or 1 switch in three positions to identify all these points.
My end result should be whwn I turn on the system or start the program It should detect whether it is at the home position, if not travel to home then respond accordigly given an input signal(4-20mA).
How will I program such on labview...finding all the right icons to record the data is such a mess for me since i'm a beginner.
Thanks -
What kind of equipment do i need for motion control
i'm new to computerized actuators, i need to control a stepper motor that can turn both directions and can be controlled by a 0-5 volt sensor. i need to be able to set the targeted volts and have it turn one direction if its reading over, and the other direction if its reading under. What should i buy.
Hey Jaspittman,
I would also recommend the following web site called Build Your Own Motion Control System which will walk you through the steps of what you will need to build your motion system. Also, I would suggest taking a look at the Motion Advisor page if you will be using any 3rd party hardware (i.e. motors, drives, stages) which can be found at the following link Advisors for Motion. These two sites have a lot of helpful information to get you started.

My system
PXI 1052 chassis
PXI 8196 RT controller
Flexmotion 7356 motion controller
Flexmotion 7354 motion controller
6259 M series DAQ
1520 SCXI
1520 SCXI
1314 SCXI frount mounting terminal block
DSM strain gage load cells
Exlar SR Brushless PM motors
Kollmorgen servo star CD series 5 drives
My objective:
I want to measure the force on the load cells with the 1520 SCXI (i.e. excite the load cell then amplify and condition its output) then I want to use this analog (force) signal as the primary feedback for my motion control system (7356 and 7354 motion controller connected to my drives and motors).
The problem:
The motion controller boards (7356 and 7354) can be configured for force feedback control via analog feedback from a load cell. However the boards implicitly expect the load cell signal to be amplified and conditioned with and external signal conditioner rather then using an NI SCXI module. Currently I’m am reading the SCXI signals via the 6259 M seriers DAQ and consequentially have no way to route the signal into the 735X boards for force feedback control. I can use softmotion to control the motors but then I loose the fast PID update rates possible with the 735X boards.
The question:
Is it possible to condition a load cell signal with a 1520 SCXI and then use it as the primary analog feedback for a 735X motion control board?
Thanks

Thank you for your feedback.
>create your own external circuitry to amplify the signal.>
True a few op-amps could amplify and filter the signal externally but the performance of such an amateur built system will never match the accuracy and functionality of the 1520 SCXI. That’s why we spent the $2500 for the professional version.
>One thing that you could do is to use a UMI with your motion controller and then wire your signal from your SCXI to the UMI.>
As I understand it the UMI is basically a break out connectivity interface for third party drives. After conditioning and amplifying the analog force signal with the SCXI module the analog signal isn’t available to wire into a UMI. To my knowledge the conditioned signal of the SCXI resides only in the PXI backplane (i.e. there is no physical access to the conditioned analog signal). Can you explain how the UMI could be help here.
Again thanks for your input GG.

If this has been answered, or solution(s) offered, I'll be darned if I can find them, even an extensive search in the Forum and Community Database...
New Yoga 2 Pro for Christmas...so far, very nice machine. However, am a litlle (!) frustrated with the Lenovo Motion Control...
I can get the software to open, access settings, etc. but the tutorial doesn't tell me squat. Activating the software doesn't open my webcam...I tried with a couple of other programs, and when opening, they DO boot the webcam on. I can't find any step-by step instructions on the 'net...heck, the Dragon Assistant software tutorial is great and got that running fine.
It appears that this is a common issue, judging by the number of posts on Lenovo Community. I tried uninstalling the original software, then reloading. I tried downloading v2.0 (it came preloaded with v2.5.1.0225 to ses if that would work, as suggested in a posted fix.
So...no Lenovo support for Motion Control? No workarounds or fixes? Is this a glitch with Win 8.1 that has yet to be resolved? Inquiring minds would sure appreciate knowing! Thanks for any assistance in advance!I dont have my Y3P at the moment but I remember disabling it from Task Manager > Startup Programs
Find Motion Control in there and Disable it, then restart the system.
You should probably also disable Harmony, since that is the app which is responsible for these transitions and gets annoying for me. -
How can I use flex motion control VI without hardware?
I would like to try and simulate the motion control of my system before i hook up the motion control card. But when I use the VI in flex motion contro took kit it asks for address or something and gives me an error. Can't I just simulate without hardware?
Hello,
The only way you can use FlexMotion without any hardware is to set it up as Open Loop Stepper Control. Otherwise, you will get errors when no encoder signal is fed back to the controller.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

SpainAhmed,
with the information that you have provided, I suggest the following components:
1 PCI-7334 (motion control device)
A stepper drive (either a single four-axis stepper drive or 3 one-axis stepper drives)
3 stepper motors (you will have to select the type that fits best to your application requirements).
This is one possible option, but depending on your needs there are also completely different potential solutions (e. g. a real-time controller or an FPGA based system with the NI SoftMotion development module).
If you provide more information about your requirements, I can help you more specifically, but an even better option would be to talk to an NI sales representative in Spain.
Kind regards,

Putting ~ into a version control system
Hey folks!
I'm curious as to how one could put ones home directory into version control, to quote Codemac;
codemac wrote:I keep my ~ in mercurial, so all files are checked in and versioned. [...] I highly suggest you put your $HOME into version control. It's real fun to see what your home directory looked like 3 years ago
I once used Subversion under Mac OS X to download a random project just for kicks, but had no idea what it was all about really. I understand that a version control system assists (manually or automatically?) in labeling files/data/"units" with version numbers, and storing the data as well? I've also seen that a number of users here use Git, another version control system, to label and share their various configuration files. Where is the data stored? On a server belonging to someone else or on ones own computer?
I found a Wikipedia article on the topic, although Subversion isn't named there, so I may be wrong on that one.
Is there a CVS that is small in size and amount of features and easy to get the grasp of?
Thanks in advance.I'm having my ~ under version control now for a while (I am using git - the decision to do so was mainly motivated by my desire to learn git). However, I don't track every file in my ~. Just the configuration files (.bashrc, .bash_logout, .zshrc, .awesomerc, vim ... etc. etc.) and some docs (though I keep them in a different private repository). I'd recommend that if you plan to put your ~ under a VCS that you should think about what you plan to track and what not first. It certainly means some additional work, because you have to remember to commit changes back into your repository every time you change a tracked file. Of course you can perform a commit on every logout, but if you want to revert/restore a single file, it's better to track changes in files individually. As I see it, the main idea of keeping your ~ in a VCS system is to have a backup from where you can restore a single file to every point in time you want, or to revert uncommited changes which broke sth. in an instant. So, IMHO it doesn't make that much sense to have the repository on your laptop only, but also to have a remote repository (in case your HD dies). For me, it's also a nice way to keep my home directory in sync over multiple machines.
As for the decision on which particular VCS to use. I first tried to do that a year ago using svn, and it didn't work out that well - for some reason I don't like svn - but that doesn't mean that svn is bad - it could be right for you . Darcs is an easy to learn VCS but it lacks some features like branches and the like (which you may not need in this szenario anyway). I don't know much about Bazaar or Mercurial, because I've never used them, however from what I've read, these two are very popular choices nowadays (maybe someone with some experience with those can shed some more light ). Also, you have to chose the VCS according to what you like to track, because they differ in performance and the extra storage they need to keep track of the changes (I read a good article which compared all named VCSs regarding repository/metadata size in differrent szenarios, small files only, big files only etc. etc. - but unfortunately I can't find it atm). -
[basic] the scope of motion control in LV
I am a very beginner in motor control part.
Very recently, some motor need to use some proper control board in control unit or PC.
If so, what is the scope of the motion control driver (library) in LabVIEW developement version?
Some restricted motor type?
What other instrument should I prepare to use the driver?
What's the difference between this type(PC or control board) and NI motion controller?
Any materials for beginner should be welcomed. For getting started with NI Motion Control I recommend this website. Here you will find tutorials, webcasts, selection guides and much more.
In general NI Motion solutions are not limited to specific motor types or applications. Depending on your application requirements you can select between motion control plugin-boards or software defined systems based on real-time hardware and/or FPGA technology.
Please have a look at our web resources first and post any specific questions to the forum.
Thanks,
Jochen Klier
