KT3 reboot - 3 long beeps

Hi folks,
My new KT3 Ultra board with XP 1800+ works great with Windows XP, however....
When I shutdown the machine it automatically reboots and gives 3 long beeps with nothing on screen. The 3 long beeps repeat until I turn off the machine at the back of the power supply. Any ideas what the problem is??? Can't find anything in the manual about beep codes.
My system is:
Athlon XP 1800+
KT3 Ultra
300W PSU
1 x 6gb HDD
1 x 40gb HDD
1 x DVD-ROM
1 x soundblaster Live 1024
GeForce 2MX 200 graphics
Power Options are set to do nothing fancy in XP.
Do you think the the PSU the culprit??? I've checked and rechecked the front panel cables and they are okay. The system works absoultely perfectly otherwise.
Many thanks in advance,
 Kenji

i have seen cases of a psu doing this
give us the details on it

  • Fail to boot (short-short-short-long beep code) after M92p BIOS Update

    Hi,
I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version using the System Update tool from Lenovo. For a while everything seemed to be working alright, as the BIOS was dowloaded and the computer rebooted. After rebooting the first time i was presented with the BIOS utility, and noticed that the update was progressing.
After 20 or so seconds the computer rebooted again. This is where my problems began. The computer immediately started beeping this short-short-short-long melody from the speakers. I thought this was normal, so I left the computer on for quite a while.
However, the beeping never stopped. Now the beeping resumed the instant i plug the power back in. I have yet been able to actually getting any sort of information on-screen telling me what's wrong.
I've tried following the "Recovering from a POST/BIOS update failure" on page 267 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual, but no luck with that so far. No matter where I place the jumper, the beeping code is the same short-short-short-long melody (yeah, it sounds like a disney tune or something).
Any bright ideas? The machine type is a M92p 2992-B3G
I'd hate to have to send it in for repairs, and Lenovo's Norwegian support line doesn't open until Monday, and there seems to be no way to call their 800-number in the states from here
Oh, and would this be covered by my warranty if repairs / motherboard replacement is the only way out?
    UPDATE #1:
    I found this in the manual;
3 short beeps and then 1 long beep DRAM memory
    error
Perform the following actions in order.
    1. Make sure the memory module(s) are properly seated
    in the connector(s).
    2. Replace the memory module(s).
    3. Replace the system board.
This is pretty much Lenovo's way of saying "You're screwed", isn't it?
    UPDATE #2:
    I've now tried pretty much everything;
The solution as proposed on page 267 in the Hardware Maintenance Manual
Unplugging all cables and harddrives before booting
Removing my PCIe video card and PCI Wireless NIC before booting
Removing all memory modules, and trying 1 and 1 module
Moved a memory module from another machine that I know is working
    No luck so far.
Ideas would be welcome at this point

I'm glad to hear it's just a simple memory error, however the original problem in this post is a bit more than just a memory problem.
This became a problem after a BIOS update, so somewhere along the way one of Lenovo's developer screwed up badly, and it's been bugging me ever since. There's absolutely no way for me to use any PCI-e card with my M92p.
I've tried 6 different cards, 3-4 different memory module combinaties, with our without harddrives plugged in, and every thinkable combination of these.
No luck. Therefore, I simply conclude that Lenovo are dicks, and we all know what dicks enjoy doing; **bleep**ing people over.
I've given up on the issue, and I'll never buy a Lenovo again after this.

  • Macbook Aluminium.  Single, long beep upon startup and update to Snow Leopard wont work.

Hi, I recently formatted my late-2008 Macbook and installed Ubuntu.  It didn't work so I formatted again and installed Leopard.  When I boot I get a single long beep.  When I try to update to Snow Leopard and reboot the OS still shows up as 10.5 (Leopard).
It seems to function normally besides all this.  I have not touched the memory in this time and the OS recognises the full 4GB I have inside.  I also did not touch the hardware, this whole problem seems to have been caused by my attempt to install Ubuntu.
    Any help out there?
    Thanks guys.

I have exactly the same problem for some days because I installed Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks God I found a way to fix it:

Go to the video on youtube and see how you got your EFI firmware flashed Reboot and the long beep should go away

  • Forced restart with long beep; magnified images

A few days ago, my MacBook Air prompted a forced restart - since I was unable to navigate the screen with the cursor, I needed to hold down the power button to force the restart.  I held it down once to power off and again to power on. When I powered on, I heard a long beep followed by the startup screen. The screen images are magnified and all desktop items have disappeared. The magnification has made navigation extremely difficult and the computer almost impossible to use.  Also, a few weeks ago I found that normal computer use was occasionally interrupted by a flash of blue screen followed by this same magnification phenomenon. At that time, I was able to reboot the computer and resume normal operation but am unable to do so now. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, what's causing it and what can be done? Thanks.

try rebooting from the installer DVD -- are you really running Jaguar 10.2.x like your profile says?
It will look like it is getting ready to run the installer; let it continue until you see a menubar across the top of your screen. Under Utilities, open Disk Utility and choose Repair Disk. Once it completes, if it indicates that the "file system was modified," choose Repair Disk again. Do this repetitively until you get no more "file system was modified" messages, then reboot normally (we hope).
If you don't have the installer DVD, reboot holding down the ⌘s keys. With any luck, that will allow you to come up in what is known as single user mode -- a black screen with a bunch of cryptic looking system boot messages. Once (or should I say, if) you get to a user prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy It should do the same thing as Disk Utility Repair Disk from the Installer DVD. Same provisions about "file system was modified" messages apply, then type /sbin/reboot
I don't think Jaguar's Disk Utility had a "Repair File Permissions" but if it did, do that, too.
With any luck one or the other approaches will solve your issue.
If none of the above works, I think I would be looking for another Mac and a firewire cable, then hook your PBG4 to it, and boot it (the PBG4) up while holding down the "T" key. Once you get the blue screen with yellow firewire symbol on the PBG4, the PBG4 should appear on the other computer's desktop as an external firewire drive. Then I would start salvaging all the Users folder data of importance that I could off of that PBG4 because I think an erase (including write zeros to disk) and reinstall the OS and user accounts and applications might be in your future. Or a visit to the Apple Store's Genius Bar...

Problem 1. After I save and exit Bios or even just exit the bios, the pc will not do anything other than have a black screen and long beeps.
If I turn off the power and then restart the pc,it boots ok.
Problem 2. The clock keeps gaing 25 minutes each day but only when connected to the internet.

I have the same problem on my K7N2 Delta-L system! The behaviour you describe doesn't happen every reboot, sometimes it also reboots normally. Sometimes I also get the problem described in the thread: "K7N2 Delta will not boot (blank, no beep)" - no boot, no beep, no video output. All this without overclocking.
The leds on the D-bracket report it as being a RAM problem: "Memory Detection Test" (damaged or improperly installed memory module)
My RAM is TwinMOS DDR400/PC3200 (with Winbond IC's), those are supported by the nForce2 SPP as listed on the nVidia site. I have purchased 2 seperate (but identical) 256MB DIMMs to operate in Dual Channel mode, which work, sometimes; sometimes the PC will boot in Single Channel mode (leaving me with 256MB available), other times in Dual Channel Mode.
As they are not "matched" DIMMs, I ran a couple of cycles of memtest86 to check if they would operate in Dual Channel mode (when it would boot in DC mode), and of course, no errors.
    Some useful info:
    - I upgraded my BIOS to 5.2 and reset the BIOS settings to default + set FSB to 166Mhz +  switched off internal modem and audio.
    - XP 2600+ (166/333FSB)
(the following shouldn't have any influence, but I'll include them for completeness sake)
    - GF4Ti4200 (VIVO)
    - SBLive value
    - 2 HD's on the primary IDE channel, CDR & DVDROM on secondary IDE channel

Ah, how I wish HW manufacturers would thoroughly test and debug their products (that includes the BIOS) prior to releasing it to the public - it can only harm their reputation.

  • Won't start up - 3 long beeps and 1 short beep repeated

As I was watching Netflix, the display went crazy and displayed horizontal lines and the computer froze.
I held the power switch down to shut it off.
After restarting, seemed to work fine for a few minutes, then same thing happened.
Reset again. Seemed to start up fine (heard the chime and the hard drive going) but no display output.
Reset again. Got the start up chime, a white screen with horizontal lines, and I get 3 long beeps and 1 short beep repeatedly.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for your help in advance.

The beeps you're hearing means the system has no usable memory. You can try reseating the memory or swapping for other known working memory (pain as it is to open the mini up). Otherwise, typically that means it's new logic board time. See this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547

  • K8D Master-F 2 long beeps

I have a K8D Master-F, it makes 2 repeating long beeps (high and low pitch) after a few seconds when powering up. The CPU is in CPU1. If I move the CPU to socket 2, the board powers up but no beeps. The only time it beeps is then a CPU is in CPU1, also I tried 2 CPU's, One being an Opteron 244 and a 242 (No i am not using dual at this time). Having the RAM in or out seem to have no effect with getting the beeps. Any ideas?

    More spec's please.....
Check the BIOS for case-open detection, turn it off....
If it still makes the noise, check the piowersupply.
Also, JPWR2 should NOT be connected....

  • I cannot boot up my Mac book and all I get is a long beep

I cannot boot up my Mac book and all I get is a long beep
Have tried checking the keypad and no luck
Is this a logic board issue or is it something else?

My daughters Mac crashed mid assignment and after hours for phone support. So was looking to see if there was anything we could do here. Your advice is correct but the issue was "long beeps". Which are generally a serious issue and not one that we are going to be able to deal with. Like the icon .... and do appreciate the fact that you were happy to help. cheers

  • Mac Pro early 2008 power off suddenly alone and gives a long beep on startup

Hello everyone! Can you resolve the problem reported? I have 6 equipaments identical to those with the same problem, some worse than others, and only two barely functioning, others are stopped. They power normally and suddenly alone they power off , and after that I only can power on again , after hours waiting or only the next day , and when it's power on , on startup , they give me a long beep , before the chime , then I can work for a time (minutes or long time , it's not secure)
I talked with Apple Computer (from USA) and they do not assume that the problem exists and that many users have the same problem, worldwide.
If you're not satisfied with the result of Apple, we will have to press them to assume the defect and promote a recall on these equipments. We have many users with the same issue (MacPro off alone)

All places where I have my equipments (they are in 4 different places, but I have tested them in all four locations), are electrically grounded, the electrical networkstabilized, reviewed annually and I use UPS minimum of 1.5 KVA (I have two UPS of 3.75 KVA) . I tested with the original HDD , with all the applications that I use installed , only with the system installed and the same procedure on a new HDD and got the same result . So , it is not eletrical problem . I have iMacs , MacBooks , G5 and MacPro early 2009 working in the same places with no problems . I tested all the sites with three different electricians and all
approved my Electric networks . As I know, all Apple equipment have
surge protection, precisely to prevent thecomponents from being damaged
by electrical problems. Again , it is not eletrical problem .

  • HP Pavilion p6774y won't start, 1 short beep 1 long beep

My  HP Pavilion p6774y now makes one short beep followed by one long beep repeatedly when I turn the power on. Nothing comes up on the screen. I've taken the RAM out, switched them around, cleaned out all of the fans including the one in the power supply, taken the video card out, unhooked all extra things like monitor, mouse etc, no luck..
It is a HP Pavilion p6774y PC

    ZJackson7, welcome to the forum.
According to this guide, the BIOS Beep Code that you are receiving is for a Memory problem.  You can test your memory by removing all of the modules and replacing them one at a time and booting.  Place the single module in the slot closest to the processor.

  • 3 long beep and cannot open MacBook

I just bought a new MacBook and I am a new Mac user. Each time I turn on my Black MacBook 10.5 it won't open and it keeps beeping 3 long sounds. I need to hold down the power button to switch it off then turn it on, then it open. Is there any problem in my MacBook? What I will do to eliminate the sound and to open smoothly?
    Thanks.

I also have the 3 long beeps and gray screen. This is incredibly frustrating just before a business trip to Dubai.
I eventually figured it was a RAM problem, I upgraded my Macbook to 2 1GB sticks in November and everything worked fine. Now it is the 22nd of Jan, used Macbook last night fine, this morning it wouldnt start, 3 beeps and gray screen.
I heard someone say the RAM could have been dislodged so i opened up the back and removed the ram and reinserted it..
NO CHANGE, still beeps 3 times and doesnt startup.
So i removed one 1 GB stick thinking it might be faulty, surprise, it works on just 1 GB, leopard starts up fine.. great but i want to use both sticks!
    I shutdown the computer..
i figured it might be that stick which was bad, so to check i swapped it with the stick i removed and restarted, also works fine..
    conclusion not bad memory...
thought it might be the port, so i swapped the stick into the other port and restarted, leopard starts fine...
    Conclusion: Not a bad port
So tried both sticks again then believing nothing was wrong, 3 beeps pop up leopard doesnt start,
Conclusion for some reason leopard is now not accepting 2GB, it will only boot with 1GB.
This makes no sense, I have a Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz machine.
There is no reason why it suddenly stopped working with 2 GB.
I am at a loss, and considering backing up all my files and reinstalling leopard next week after my trip with a complete format. Although this shouldnt be nexxessary and may not change anything. Otherwise take it into an apple store and see what they say.
