KT3 ultra2 missreading hdd

hi - ive recently bought a kt3 and everything is running fone except that it recognises my 60gig Maxtor drive as just over 30 gig?? i first noticed in windows but when i check the BIOS its reading the same int there (set to auto)
i thought a BIOS flash may be in order but when i ran the update utility it says my BIOS is upto date?
erm can anyone help ? drive is setup on primary channel as master with no slave on the channel.

it works fine in another machine and there are no jumper settings on it in relation to disk size. before fitting it i ran fdisk, cleared all partitions and set a primary dos partition only, i havent tried running it on the 2nd channel yet though will try that tonight.
before i do though any more suggestions?

  • KT3 Ultra2 and HDD 137Gb

I wonder if someone can help me to be clear about the following please.
I understand that there are two inter-related areas with regard to drives that exceed this capacity barrier. One is the need for 48bit LBA within windows to have partitions greater than this size and the other is to have a BIOS that is itself able to address a drive of that size.
    1. As regards the Bios issue, according to this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=70205 the KT3 Ultra2 can use HDD >137Gb and would have no probs with a 200 or 250Gb HDD. Is this correct?
    2. As regards o/s issues, I use XP SP1 (intergrated disk). It was my understanding that XP with SP1 was all that was required to run a HDD >137Gb this as per the following threads.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71126&hilight=hard+disk
    http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/faq/137_winxp.html#trad
However, the info below from MS suggests that one also needs the Atapi.sys version to be 5.1.2600.1135 or later.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013
So in my case I have XP SP1 with Atapi.sys version 5.1.2600.1106, therefore I would need to apply Microsoft Knowledge Base article 331958 , referred to in kb303013 above.
This would in the first instance update my Atapi.sys version to the required one ie v1135 (or later). Am I correct in my understanding please?
I have not upgraded my HDD yet but would like to be clear on these issues before taking the plunge.

Thanks for your reply Wonkanoby. I have read several of your posts that say exactly the same thing ie XP with SP1 integrated is fine.
Any thoughts on what the MS articles are all about. Sorry to ask, but I just get nervy before upgrades.
Plus I wonder if any other KT3 Ultra2 users can let me know if 250Gb (or any HDD of 200Gb or higher) works on their system.
    Many thanks

  • Problems w/ KT3 Ultra2 w/R

I think the best thing to do it's to explain the problem from the beginning.
A couple of months ago I bought my computer by components and put it togheter myself. Everything was fine, but there was a problem. Back then, my mobo was an ABIT KX7333R and it wouldn't boot if I changed the processor speed in the bios (it booted allright with the defalut -XP 1500- but when changed it to the real one -XP 2000- it didn't boot at all). So I used it for about 3 weeks with the default setting (I was too lazy at that moment to change the damn thing) and one night, the computer died while I was using it. Anyway, I assumed twas the mobo, so I requested a RMA from Abit, and had my motherboard replaced. The replacement worked fine for about 10 minutes, and when I was writing an email, puff, died again. At that time I was swearing and cursing, and blamed Abit. By then, I was tired of waiting and everything (just got stressed) so I ordered an MSI KT3 Ultra2 with raid. When I first booted the PC, the motherboard didn't recognized my HDD when I entered the Bios. I tried restarting, but the pc would not respond. So I checked the D-Bracket lights and they say that the problem was in the IDE controller or device. So I replaced my HDD with another one, but nothing happened.
    So, my questions are:
1- Am I the guy with the worst luck in the world and got three defective motherboards in a row?
2- Could it be that something else in my PC is causing the problem?
If you have any questions, please post it here and I'll answer them. Here it's my computer components:
    Athlon XP 2000
    MSI KT3 Ultra2
    Gainward GF4 TI4200
    SB Audigy Gamer
    3COM Ethernet card
Corsair XMS PC2700 512MB (Silver heatspreader)
    Turbolink 420W PS
    Lite-On CDRW
    PS: Sorry for the length...

Have you tried with another CPU ? If not, please do so ; or return the CPU for RMA.

  • BIOS Settings Problem on KT3 Ultra2 MS-6380E with Barton 3000+(FSB333)

Well, I finally got my Barton 3000+ with 333 MHz FSB and installed it yesterday in my MSI KT3 Ultra2 Mainboard....
    System Before changing anything:
    PSU: DTK  400 W
    +3.3 V / 22 A
    +5 V / 35 A
    +12 V / 15 A
    -5 V / 0.5 A
    -12 V / 0.8 A
    +5 V VSB / 3 A
So that should make up 400 W as far as I know, my total System drain should be around 300-350 W so even if it would not suffice 400 W it should run the system ?
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 2100 FSB 133 MHz
    RAM: 1.536 MB, 3x512 MB Infineon PC3200 (400MHz) CL 3-3-3-8 @400MHz, Cl2.5-3-3-7@333Mhz, 2-2-2-6@266MHz
VGA: MSI RX-9800 Pro 128 MB
    DVD/CD-R/RW-Combo: Plextor PX-708 (Firmware 1.08)
    CD-R/RW: TEAC CD-W540E (Firmware 1.0K)
Storage: Western Digital WD800BB (80 GB) (Firmware 17.07W17)
    USB-Storage: Maxtor 4 K080 H4 (80 GB)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
Printer: HP Deskjet 970Cxi with Original HP Driver Version 4.3
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
BIOS Settings: SDRAM 1T Command: "Disabled" It won't work stable with 3 RAM's in it with that setting, but that I did know before.
    CPU Fast Command: "Ultra"
System was running stable for nearly 2 years with this Configuration:
    So now it goes:
First I changed the CPU form my old AMD XP 2100+ to the new Barton 3000 + with its new Arctic Cool Copper Silent 2TC.
Then I went into BIOS and raised the FSB to 166 MHz, which should be the correct one, or do I have to put 167 MHz in there (since 166.666666 MHz is rounded to 167)?
Then I exited and watched the restart...but it didn't start-up it only got me 3 long beeps at the HOST.
After some whining and beating I plugged out anything and cleared CMOS and started the whole thing again:
    System after Clearing CMOS:
    Mainboard: KT3 Ultra 2 (BIOS v5.7)
CPU: AMD XP 3000+  FSB 100 MHz
RAM: 1x512 MB Infineon PC3200 CL 2-3-3-7 (BIOS setting CAS Latency by "SPD")
Storage: Western Digital WD800BB (80 GB) (Firmware 17.07W17)
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 172T with Driver Version 1.0
OS: Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4
With all Default settings, the Computer boots up, and is correctly Recognized as a Barton 1300 MHz.
When increasing FSB to 133 MHz it is correctly displayed as a Barton 2200+
    NOW...
...after adding one BIOS setting after another I narrowed the problem down to the "CPU Fast Command (decode)" Function...if set to Ultra it does not boot-up when running 166 MHz FSB, it does not even let me into BIOS. I have to clear CMOS and restart from scratch again...
Is this normal and expectable with a Barton 3000+ running at the native 166 MHz FSB or not ?
Since my system before was running on "Ultra" with my old AMD XP 2100+.
There is only one more thing I noticed, the CPU V-Core is shown to be only 1.616 V (setting on "Auto" but it should be 1.65 V ? Should I increase the V-Core to 1.675 V in order to get closer to 1.65 V or shouldn't I worry about ?
Thanks for any Input you can give me on the problem.
    Iscaran

Iscaran, you are indeed correct in the statement which you made

This setting can be set to fast/ultra on the KT3 Ultra2 when using PC2100 ram running at 266. However, when using PC2700 ram running at 333, this setting MUST be set to normal for the satisfactory operation of the board. I know that you have PC3200 ram actually installed but it is only running at 333.

    Yes, absolutely normal

How are you measuring this ie Bios or o/s utility? Not unknown that these are incorrect. However, if you feel unhappy about this, try setting the V-core manually to 1.65v and check what this gives.
    Quote
So 3.3 V x 22 A gives 72.6 W, that could be really a little cutting the edge. Could that cause the board to not respond when setting the "CPU Fast Command" to "Ultra" ?
Getting a more powerful psu will not likely cure this well documented problem.
However, this board mostly draws power from the 3.3 & 5v rails. The 12v is mostly used to power HDD, optical and fans. When you consider that 128Mb of ram draws about 8-10w from the 5v rail and you have a total of 1.5Gb that adds up to 96-120W of juice just for the memory alone. This board will beep at you at o/s level when it's running underpowered but my opinion is the same as osnavi's your 3.3v & 5v rails are too low. Also what is combined 3.3v & 5v wattage. What kind of reading do you get on monitoring utilities.
By the way I have as you can see from my dets below the same board and cpu as you and when I changed from a XP2000 Palomino with PC2100 ram to XP3000 Barton and PC3200, I changed the 'Fast Command' setting from 'Fast' to 'Normal'
Hope this helps, enjoy the board

  • KT3 Ultra2 won't run XP 2500 at more than 151 Mhz

Not an unusual topic I know but I haven't found any solutions in this forum as yet!
With my XP 2000 cpu installed my system is stable when the FSB is overclocked to 150 Mhz.  When I install the XP 2500 cpu and set the FSB in the BIOS (latest vertsion) to 166 Mhz it won't access the hard drives at all.  My initial thought was the psu so I reduced the system to 1 hdd, 1 DVD rewriter, 256Mb memory and tried again.  No change!  Then I started reducing the FSB until at 151 Mhz it would boot but as an XP 1900 cpu.  The VIA chipset drivers are up to date.
I' don't know what to try next.  Any ideas?

I can only say, I'm running my KT3 Ultra2 with XP 2800+ without any problem at 333 Mhz. Remember you have to upgrade Bios with ver 5.7 so Mobo can work with a 166 FSB. Also, better try starting with only one memory module. You can take a look at my P.S. specs. on my sig. It's not too good, but enough for this rig. So, don't dispose yet your 2500+, try and tell us how did it go.
A bit off: Do you like this Forum ? If yes, Read the post on first page in this Forum " Forum Team on Strike...". If you want this Forum to stay as it is now, please send a mail to MSI. Adress is mentioned in first post.

  • Can't enter bios on KT3 Ultra2

last night I did a succesful bios upgrade to V5.7 on my KT3 Ultra 2 board.
System rebooted into bios default with no problems and I reset all the parameters as per the previous version.
Unfortunately, I set the FSB to 166 instead of 133 ( Gawd knows what I was thinking of at the time!).
On reboot after saving and exiting the bios setup, I was met with a blank video screen - no beeps came from PC on reboot.
The LED display is showing 1&2 Red, 3&4 Green.
Subsequent reboots show the LED display goes straight to this configuration on power up.
I tried resetting the bios back to the default, but I still have the same symptoms.
DVD , CD-RW and HDD light up during boot up, but nothing seen on the Floppy. Hitting Del or F11 has no effect.
I don't have another PC that will allow me to check CPU, Memory or Video card.
I've tried changing the Memory round and reducing to just one stick. Even ran without memory and still got same symptoms without any beeps during bootup.
At the moment the PC has been powered down and the clear-bios jumper left in 2&3 overnightin an effort to clear the bios.
Where do I go from here?
Now if I've knackered the mobo/bios, how do I stand installing a new mobo/cpu under the existing Windows XP installation on the Master Hard drive ? My last back-up is out of date and having just come back off hols the HDD is full of images I desperately need to keep!
    System:
MSI KT3 Ultra2 series mobo; Athlon XP1800+; Matrox G450 Video Card; 512Megs PC2100 DDRMemory; Amibios V5.7; 350W PSU; ample cooling by way of extra fans; Windows XP Home SP1.
    All help gratefully received,

    I had exactly the same.
my 1900+ has always run at 166*10 with bios rev5.6
    I flash to rev 5.7
I was trying 10.5*166 (the cpu has ever done this in the past) when the computer refuses to start.
    the D-braket shows : LED 1&2 Red, 3&4 Green.
rest, unplung the bat, the card was dead
I've RMA the card the last week.
All my component works ok on my k7s5a
Is the reset not working with this bios or the bios has kill the card, I don't know !
PS : a friend of mine has a KT266A, the capacitors near the cpu break (the top was bounded). This trouble exist in MSI KT400 card too.

  • [KT3 Ultra2-R / PSU] Upgrading to Barton 3000+

    Hi!
I'm thinking about upgrading from my 2200+ to a Barton 3000+ chip. Is there any problems with this? Is my PSU good enough to handle the upgrade?
    My PSU is Antec TruePower 380P (+5V: 35A, +12V: 18A, +3.3V: 28A).
After the upgrade my computer's specs would be:
    MSI KT3 Ultra2-R
    AMD Athlon Barton 3000+
    2x512mb Kingston ValueRAM
    GeForce4 Ti4600
80gb Western Digital HDD + 40gb Seagate HDD
    CD-RW drive
    SB Audigy
    3 case fans
How about if I add a third 512mb DIMM, a 80gb HDD and change the GF4 to a Radeon 9800? Would the PSU still be good enough?
    Thanks in advance!

Really? I think my ValueRAM are different revision, but I'm not having any problems. I guess I'm lucky.

  • KT3 Ultra2 R and VGA problem

I wonder if I could please get some ideas as regard this rather odd problem which I am encountering. This problem occurs when while the pc is 'shut down' if I disconnect the power supply ie switch off power by way of the switch on the psu. When I switch power back on again and boot, the pc begins its booting sequence it begins to launch windows and then it stops and a little red square (with a bit of green) appears in the top left hand corner of the screen. Now this problem does not occur if I shut down the pc normally (but don't cut off power supply). I have several partitions on my HDD and they are all affect at the same time. The end result is that I boot into safe mode I look at the refresh rate which is set to 'unknown' change it to 'adapter default' then reboot but upon reboot I get windows displaying screen at 640x480 with standard vga colours. I check in device manager under 'display adapters' what driver it's showing and it's the driver which I last loaded ie the correct one. I cannot change screen resolution , bit colour and the refresh rate only allows for 2 options, either 'optimal' or 'adapter default'. In order to get back to where I was, I have to remove and re-install my VGA driver and then everyting is back to normal (until I switch off power again at psu then back to square one). I have spoken to the manufacturers of the graphics card and they say that if the card works ok when I shut down pc normally and restart then cannot be the card. I described my problem in greater detail to MSI support and they said either VGA or O/S.
In essence I wanted to isolate the problem to, is it 'hardware or 'software'.
I would be grateful if anyone can shed some light.

    Creative Audigy
    Enermax 432W
    Windows 98SE (via 4-1 v 4.34)
Seagate 60Gb 7200rpm   I am running the HDDs as independant drives on the
Seagate 40Gb 7200rpm   Raid controller ie one on IDE3 & one on IDE4

Odd as it might seem I have to follow the proceedure listed below if I want to switch off power altogether to work on my pc.
    1. Cold boot system with 166FSB and let O/S install
    2. Reboot enter Bios and reduce FSB to 133 make sure to set memory speed as HCLK and let O/S load
    3. Shut down and switch off power supply
    4. Reconnect power and boot system. Enter bios set FSB to 166 (the mem speed will be HCLK)
    5. System continues to boot and loads O/S
From that point on, cold boots (without cutting power supply) are not problematic as once the 166FSB is 'registered' everything works ok (at every cold boot). So anytime I wanna work on my pc I guess I have to do the above 5 steps. They seem to work but need to try it out a few more times before I am confident that this process will always work.
I am sure you agree that this is one strange mother of a problem.
I suppose the only 2 things left are a total O/S reload or trying another 333 cpu because I have tried everything else.  I guess I will have to live with it.
I have also cut some additional front vents so that front fan draws more air in and it appears to have dropped my idle Temp to 40.5C on CPU (running at clock 2083Mhz).
As as said earlier in my post my system ran perfectly with XP2000+ and 512Mb PC2100. I merely upgraded the CPU to XP2600 and mem to PC2700 and it has thrown up this very odd problem. And to boot (if you will pardon the expression) when I first installed new CPU and memory it booted first time at 166FSB. osnavi, in case you upgrade your CPU to a XP2600 and you get this weird problem at least you can come back to to this thread and find this workaround.
I wonder if anyone can fathom out why this is happening.......If not as I said I can live with it.
wonkanoby, I will try the link to the memtest. That is the only thing I have not tested so will give that a try.

  • MSI KT3 ULTRA2 - RAM question

    Hi,
I just bought MSI KT3 ULTRA2 -Sound Motherboard
and for the RAM, I want to buy:
TOSHIBA 1.0GB ECC Registered DDR SDRAM DIMM (Toshiba model: THMD1GE0SB80 (PC1600) 128Mx72)
(for detail of the RAM, please read at: http://www.toshiba.com/taec/components/Datasheet/THMD1GE0SBxx-010702.pdf )
Do you guys know if that RAM is supported by MSI KT3 ULTRA2?
    Thanks a lot

And beside, I'm building that computer with:
    Mother Board : MSI KT3 Ultra2
    Processor: AMD Athlon 1800+ XP
    HDD : Western Union wb1000 100 gigs 7200
RAM: Toshiba 1 gigs pc 1600 ECC registered (still in doubt if I can use that)
Video Card: any suggestion? I'm thinking ATI radeon 9000 128 megs DDR, it's not that great, but I dont need a really good video card, I work most of the time
    CASE: any suggestion?
    Cooler: suggestion?

  • KT3 Ultra2-R, RAID - single disc array

There are threads on this forum that discuss how to create a single disc array using onboard RAID to free up IDE1 and 2 for non-HDD devices.
What exactly does the following taken directly from the KT3 Ultra2-R page on MSI.com mean?
"Note: Only two hard disk drives will adopt the RAID function."
Does this mean that only a maximum of two arrays can be created using either 2, 3 or 4 physical hard drives?

My guess is that the wording of that warning is poor. What it is trying to say is that while four physical drives can be attached to IDE RAID those four physical drives can only be configured as 4 single disc arrays, 2 two disc arrays, or 2 single disc arrays and 1 two disc array.
Instead of "Note: Only two hard disk drives will adopt the RAID function." perhaps "Note: Each array can contain a maximum of two physical drives."
Also, risk_reversal, have you noticed whether or not the physical location of the connection to RAID affects the array? I currently have one single disc array on IDE3 master. If I move a new drive to that location and connect the current drive on IDE4 will that affect the array currently created for that physical drive?
I assume that the drive letters will change but other than that, is the RAID BIOS identifying the drives by some id other than just which IDE they are connected to?

My problem like this; yesterday I playing Audio CD using Power DVD XP, then suddenly the application not  respond , so I reset the computer . After booting ,the hard disk can not detect. So turn off the system without do any thing ,let rest 10 minutes & turn on, the hard disk  can detect ,so go to windows  again, try play cd  again, but after this the system was not  respond same like above problem .so reset the pc ,after booting the computer can not detect the hard disk again. So I turn off and  until  today in morning .I turn on my pc,after booting the hardisk can detect.but can’t go to window anymore, because all inside my hdd
    was lose, my D Drive data also missing (I got 2 partition-1st partition-C Drive: OS+ Software; 2nd partition -D Drive :MP3 song +My document).But I go to FDISK ,can’t access drive.
This problem I not sure is hard disk problem or power supply problem or mainboard problem. But can’t be the power supply not enough power, because I  just have 1 HDD , 1 CDRW Drive,1 Floppy, Mainboard with 1 chipset fan ,AMD Athlon XP1500+  c/w original fan ,VGA+VGA fan & sound card only. • KT3 ultra2 going BEEP BEEP BEEEEP BEEP!

I dont know if anyone looked at my other thread or not about memory problems, but i think its something else now.
its a hit and miss when i turn my computer on, it will turn on properly or go BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEP BEEP BEEP till i turn it off in the back.
weird thing is after i reset the power in the back, it works again.
Once in windows though, everything is perfect. no errors in memtest, can loop 3dmark, can do 3 hours of burn in test and play all sorts of games. I can even leave the computer on all day and night with ZERO problems.
the problem only happens when i first turn the computer on.
    any ideas?
    My sig: KT3 ultra2, 2x512meg pc3200 shikaram, 9700pro, 160gig maxtor, 56k modem, Lan card, SBlive5.1,

i wrote my new sig below my problem.. ignore the sig in my profile pls.
to add to this problem, sometimes when it boots up, there is a blank screen and the HDD led stays on with no beeps at all.
seems like my computer doesnt like cold boots anymore. I have to cycle the power in the back and reset a few times in order to get it to work.
i wonder if its the motherboard?
also sometimes when i boot up, all i see is the AMI bios picture and nothing else. other times when i boot up, all i see is the bios screen for the video card. go figure
anyone else think its the motherboard or the power supply? PS is about 3 yrs old and mobo is about 3 yrs old as well.. everything else in system is pretty much new

  • KT3 Ultra2 Probs.

    MB: KT3 Ultra2 w/o raid or bluetooth
    RAM: Crucial PC2100
    CPU: ATHLON XP 1700+
    GPU: GeForce4 Ti 4200
HDD: WD Barracuda ATA66 IV 40 GB
    PSU: 200W combined
I just bought this board yesterday and I took it back because it was having probs, but when I recieved my replacement I found that it was doing the same thing. The board doesn't even post because the D-Bracket is telling me that it doesn't detect my hard drive. I've tried other drives, other ram, other cables, other PSU's, other CPU's, other GPUs, cleared the CMOS, taken the battery out for 3 hours, and still no post and the bracket has two red lights on 1/2. And everything works perfectly on my older PIII 600 board, so what's the problem?

same problem happens to my board!!!!! YES!!
ok do this to solve it:
    1) unplug all ide / floppy cables
    2) remove PCI / AGP cards
    3) remove ram
    4) clear cmos
    5) remove cmos battery
    6) remove PSU connection
    7) wait for like, 5 min
    8) reconnect / install ALL
    9) turn on the thing
    10) PRESTO
Ok guys, ive seen this behavior on other 3 KT3 Ultra-2, mods, please bring this up to MSI guys, its only a minor annoyance, cause after that board works flawlesly

  • KT3 Ultra2 (MS6380E v1.0) and XP2800

I am at my wits end.
I had a MS-6380E board running fine with an XP1900.
Since upgrading to an XP2800 (which according to the MSI site is supported) I can’t get my system stable except by setting the FSB to 100 in BIOS.  As I understand it, it should be set at 166.  However, every time I attempt to set it at that value (or indeed any higher than about 125) the system shuts down (powers off) within a minute of booting up.
Consequently the CPU is running slow – about 1.25Ghz.  If I increase the FSB to 166 the boot screen recognizes that it is running an XP2800 processor but I then have the instability problems described above.
I have tried everything I can think of.  The BIOS (5.7) and motherboard drivers are all up to date.  The fan tests fine.  I went out and brought a new power supply (specs below) believing it would solve the problem (previously using a 350W PSU).  It hasn’t even improved things.  Maybe I need more power, but I would have thought that what I have bought is ample.
    My system:
    Codegen 450W ATX2.03(P4) Model 450x; 3.3V/25A, 5V/35A, 12V/16A (235W Max)
    MSI KT3 Ultra2 MS-6380E v1.0
    Athlon Barton XP2800 OPGA 1.65V 85C 512k 333MHz
    2 * 256Mb  3200 Kingston (400)
    MSI MS-StarForce GeForce4 MX 420 (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420)
    Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)
    IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller
    ST320420A and WDC WD1200JB-00GVA0 HDDs
    LITEON DVD-ROM LTD165H, LITEON CD-RW LTR-40125S
    FDD
    CanoScan LiDE 20/N670U/N676U
    HP Laserjet 1000 series
    SoftV92 56k Data Fax Modem
Logitech Cordless MX Duo keyboard and mouse
    Win XP Pro
I hope this information is adequate.  Unfortunately I am only semi-computer literate.

"...2 * 256Mb 3200 Kingston (400)..." I really don't know for sure, but think Bios update (5.7) didn't change the Mobo's memory support, so, the max. speed supported should be PC 2700 (running 1:1 with CPU speed). You were running the old CPU with same memory ? At what speed ? Try with only 1 module to see if it works. Or if you can, try a PC 2700 memory to see if it works. Also agree with Wonka about P.S. Codegen are really not good. You must have in mind that this Mobo takes most of it's power from 3.3 and 5v. rails and the 3.3v. 25 A. isn't good for a pretty loaded PC as yours. But you say it runs for a minute or so, then also you could have a temp. problem as said by Toenne. Is HS seated OK ? (Not 180 degrees upside down and with only a drop of thermal grease, and is it strong enough for the job ? )
