Labview app developed in Win XP wont install properly on win 7

I developed an app which had hard coded path filenames and built the installer to install them in those specific directories.  I.E. : c:\Program Files\app\myfile.txt.  I ran this installer on a win 7 machine and it put the files in the directory C:\Program Files x86\app\myfile.txt.  As a result, the program does not work because it is looking for the file in the original directory where it isnt.
How do I get around this problem and allow my app to be installed in either Win XP or Win 7?

That second example you linked to has nothing to do with project build or installation directories. It is an example that is related to this: Why Does My Executable Not Work When Using the Current VI's Path Constant?

Since this new Get System Dir.VI has many more selctions, have these features been incorporated into the project build tool?
What exactly are you asking here? The building of the installer uses symbolic names for where the files should be placed (ie., "Program Files" to indicate whatever folder is specified as the installation directory). Thus, a user can select to install the application onto some other drive, such as "E:\YourApp", instead of "C:\Program Files" (or "C:\program Files (x86)" on a 64-bit system). There should be no reason for you to set these paths in the installer specification. This simply moves the path hard-coding from the code to the installer. How is this any better?
Your code should use the Get System Directory VI to get the paths programmatically.
You should also keep in mind that Windows 7 has further restrictions on the "C:\Program Files" and other folders (such as the root drive). This has come up before, so you can search for these posts. If you want to save something programmatically, under XP it was not an issue, but under Windows 7 it will be an issue if your target is the "C:\Program Files" directory, if that's where the application was installed. Microsoft created the "C:\Program Data" folder for post-installation, run-time saving of files by the application.

The MBA is so small and thin many people can't help thinking it is like a Windows netbook - an underpowered toy. It isn't. There's nothing I do on my top end iMac that I can't - and don't - do on my MBA. Of course the iMac has a faster processor, bus speed, and a discrete video card so it is much faster than my MBA. Then again, my computers spend more time waiting for me to do something than I wait for them - and this includes using Photoshop and compiling code.
If I were writing large programs - something like Word for example - I'd want a very fast processor to speed up the compile/debug/compile cycle. But for iOS development your codebase will be much smaller. Frankly I can't see that much difference between a 13" MBA and a 13" MBP for development purposes. Now a top of the line 15" MBP is a different matter with its much faster CPU and separate video card.

  • Itunes wont install properly? please help!!

    hello,
iTunes is being very difficult atm! reinstalled the iTunes software and the error message comes 'iTunes wont install properly...'.
I have run a diagnostics test and hoping someone can point in the direction of how to fix it! cannot even connect my iphone device to it.
    please help!
    thanks

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • ITunes on Win 7 wont install

    Hi guys.
I downloaded the latest iTunes and it wont install.
Im running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit. When i downloaded the 64bit version i got a msg saying that its not a valid win32 app????
I then downloaded it again with the same issue.
When i installed a earlier version that i used on my 32bit system it worked but i cant rip my cd's.
    Ayn ideas??

    Hello;
I also had trouble installing iTunes on Windows 7, but 32 bit.
It looks like maybe you are trying to install iTunes 64 bit on 32 bit machine or version of Windows, as it is looking for a valid Win32 app?
You might want to verify the version of Windows you are running, and whether your machine is correctly configured for 64 bit.
Here is an account of my trouble, and my suggestions for installing iTunes on any Windows 7 machine:
First, I found that the setup would freeze when it was almost done. The last screen, the progress bar would freeze about 3/4 of the way through.
I found that, after stopping the process in Task Manager, that iTunes was installed, and ran properly. So, it was only the install program that had frozen, after it had completely installed iTunes.
I did run the setup in compatibility mode for Vista SP2, and ticked the run as admin box.
I think that there are issues with iTunes (32 and 64 bit) on Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit) but Apple doesn't seem to want to address this. I have yet to see an acknowledgment from Apple on this problem.
    What I recommend, is this:
Before attempting to install iTunes, create a system image (not just a restore point) so that you can restore your system if and when iTunes messes up your system.
Make sure you are logged into your computer as admin or a user that has admin privs.
Run the iTunes setup program with the "run this program as administrator" box ticked.
Try running with compatibility for Vista SP2.

  • ITunes wont install properly

I've never had this problem before. But ever since trying to update to the version of itunes right before this newest release, i cant use the in-program update, or manually install without getting a message along the lines of "iTunes was not installed properly, you won't be able to import or burn cd's"
I tried uninstalling, and even nuking registry entries. I've restarted my computer, deleted any sort of folder or file that was related to iTunes.
What exactly am I doing wrong? I spent over $200 on my ipod, and at least $400 on iTunes music and gifts for my friends. I'm going to be rather ****** if i cant at least burn a cd with music i purchased.

  • How can I design my LabVIEW app to behave differently based on installed components?

    Howdy all,
I've got a program that is complete, and offers some basic service. Advanced users will have the option of additional functionality. When users decide to use this program, they decide what capabilities they want - whether it provides just the base functionality, or if it has the advanced functionalities. The additional functionality relies on the installation of an additional LabVIEW component. In this case, the base package requires simply the LabVIEW(7) runtime engine. However the additional functionalities are vision related and require the installation of the IMAQ Vision 7 Development Module. I would like my program to detect the installation of the vision module
on the user's computer, and give the user access to these vision functions ONLY if the vision pack is installed. (ie, I don't want to have two versions of the program - the user only installs one complete version, but some components will be hidden if they don't have the vision module)
Currently, this program checks the Window's system32 directory for the presence of the imaq.dll and the nivision.dll. Right now, this system *sort of* works on most computers, but if the user has their windows installed in a non-standard windows directory (say they installed windows to "windoze" or something other than the standards like "Windows" and "Winnt")
Does anyone know of a way to programmatically detect the installation of the Vision module? What I'm doing right now would work in 95% of the cases (I think) if I could nail down the root windows directory (which I'm pretty sure is stored in the registry for all Windows versions, but the name of the key depends on the version of windows, a
nd I would rather not go down that road)
Any help, stories about similar situations, etc., would be appreciated.

    Vitrick and Andre -
Even better might be to use one of the Windows API calls
"GetSystemDirectory" or "GetWindowsDirectory" located in the KERNEL32.DLL.
See MSDN for documentation of the calls.

  • Hp coolsense wont install properly

Can someone help me. My coolsense started not working properly when i open it up saying that my laptop doesn't support it when in fact i had been using it for months already. i read in a topic here that it's in support assistant but it doesn't work there as well. i tried reinstalling support assistant but now coolsense wasn't included in it. i tried installing hp coolsense directly but it doesn't work as well. Please i need a solution for this. just cleaned my laptop and i want to keep my fans working efficiently since i do gaming a lot

    Hi,
Which installation program are you refering to?
If it was the stand-alone CoolSense utility, it may well be that your notebook doesn't support this and only supports version 1 which is implemented from HPSA - only the later version of CoolSense can use the stand-alone utility.
If you get the windows installation error message again, let me know what it says.

  • FlashPlayer 10 Still wont install properly

I don't know how to act calm about this, now a really great
deal of our users/customers have been visitng sites that require
FlashPlayer 10+, now theyre just lost, with no Flash at all.
We need to get Adobe to FIX THAT ASAP!
    What can be done?

    Hi squadjot-
I have never seen a website that requires Flashplayer 10+.
There's still a few there that haven't been updated to
accept/recognize FP10 and default to "You must have the latest
version of Flashplayer" and the link takes you to FP10. Which, of
    course, doesn't help at all.....
Most sites that have updated to work with FP10 will still
work OK with the latest v9.
    But: there's always some exceptions/weirdness.
    Can you provide a link?
    Thanks.
