LabVIEW Core 1 and Core 2 training effectiveness

I'm scheduled to take LabVIEW core 1 and core 2 training in the second week of October. I would like to get an idea on how effective this training is, and how to approach it.
I work in a test and measurement lab and we use LabVIEW to automate our testing (RF, EMI/EMC). We currently have some labVIEW programs up but no one to maintain/upgrade or design new processes and I am planning to step into this role. Is it feasible to expect to jump right in after the training?
Thank you.

Core I and Core II will teach you the fundamentals of what LabVIEW does.  (And some very valuable skills)
It will not teach you how to architect a robust framework for test.  That's something you will need to learn to step into a Lead Developer role.
It will not "Give" you a source code control repository.  That's something your boss will need to provide to keep your work product safe.
It will not provide mastery of best methods and practices with a thourough knowledge of the intracacies of programming in LabVIEW for yor companies needs.  BUT, you found the forums.....come back often! You'll learn more here by accident than you might imagine!
I found Core 1 and 2 to be very nice affirmations of what I have learned here!
I would highly recommend taking this tutorial in advance, so it won't be totally alien to you when you start the training.  It's better to start out with some questions and some answers, than no questions or answers.
Post-training, I would recommend Bloomy's LabVIEW Style Book.  You don't have to get the latest, greatest edition - most of the guidance there is timeless.
[edit]
LOL it would appear that I am responding the wrong post.  I assume Jeff has advanced LabVIEW knowledge.

  • Labview 7.1 and Dual Core Processors

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has encountered any problems using Labview
    7.1 and the newer dual-core processors. I have a Dell Dimension DXPO51,
2.8 GHz Pentium D with 1 GB ram. There is NO virus software or any
other non-essential programs running in the background. The computer is
totally dedicated to controlling a machine.
Other NI boards installed: PCI-6221 for analog inputs, PCI-6602 for
reading encoders, PCI-7352 Motion Control board to control 2 motors.
    The problem:
Periodically when I start my program, it locks up and I get the "Tell
Microsoft about this problem..." screen. After it exits out of Labview
and I restart, the Run arrow is not broken but the program will not run
until I make a change on the block diagram. Then I can run again.
Doesn't happen all the time, doesn't happen after running after a
certain amount of time, doesn't happen after a particular change is
made (i.e. adding case statements, adding an event, etc.). In other
    words, totally random.
I have tried totally uninstalling ALL National Instruments software,
including cleaning the registry, and re-installing everything. Didn't
    help.
The machine will be shipping with the executable file only but I'm still leary of problems arising due to this issue.
Any help or suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Teri

    Hi Teri,
I've seen scattered reports of users having trouble with dual-processor
machines with earlier versions of LabVIEW, though I'm not aware of
verified solutions in those cases.  The dual-processor operation
should be completely transparent to LabVIEW, although I know XP has had
some difficulties in providing the abstraction correctly.  A
workaround that has been successful in the past is to set the processor
affinity for LabVIEW to a single processor.  This should eliminate
the dual-processor nature of the system from consideration.  If
the problem still recurs after that, then the issue stems from another
source and we can investigate further.  Does it show this behavior
with any program (or just by opening the LabVIEW environment)?
How often does this occur (10%, 50% of the time)?
    Cheers,

  • Can we use latest version of Add-Ons and Toolkits with older version of LabVIEW core?

    Hi every body
    I'm new to LabVIEW
    I have a question .
Can we use (indeed install) latest version of Add-Ons and Toolkits(for example 2009 or 8.6.1 version) with older version of LabVIEW core(for example LabVIEW 8.6)?
    No problem ?!
I have LabVIEW 8.6(Evalution) and I want istall Real Time Module 2009.

I think perhaps 8.6 and 8.6.1 is compatible. But I am 100% sure that 2009 and 8.6.(1) is not downwards compatible
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted

    Hi Leo22,
Does this error occur if you use any of the example programs that come shipped with LabVIEW? I would try opening one of the examples that write data to Word and see if those give you an error. Also, have you tried just putting down a New Report.VI and change the report type to Word? If this simple vi (that's all you need to open Word) breaks, I would check to see if there are any instances of Word still open. Check the task manager to see if any word processes are still open. There should not be a problem accessing Word 2003 from LabVIEW 7.0. If neither of these solutions work, please give some more detail about your application and we can research further. Thanks!

    Hello Dear Friends,
I Have a maybe very simple but confusing question.
I can not distinguish between "Location" and "Building" in Training and Event Management.Does Location contain buldings?
what is the relation between these two? and where do they join and link to each other? please give me an example.

    HI,
Location means name of the city/town where the training is conducted,
Building means, in one city there may be more then one training institute/different building.
    for an Ex.
    Location - Delhi.
Building-    Where the training is actually conducted. Like building 1 and building 2.

  • Windows 7 with labview 8.5 and NI-8451

    Hello,
I am using LabVIEW 8.5 with NI-8451 device on Windows 7. I installed 1.1 driver for NI-8451, but I am unnable to access any subVI connected with NI-8451.  Can you advise?
    Thank you.

    Hi miso2562,
The issue is most likely compatibility between the drivers, LabVIEW, and the OS. LabVIEW 8.5 is not supported on Windows 7 (only up to Vista), and NI-845X 1.1 is not supported on Windows 7 either (only up to XP). Also, NI-845X 1.1 does not support LabVIEW 8.5 either (only up to 8.2).
Ideally, if you use Windows 7 you should have LabVIEW 2009 SP1 or newer and NI-845X 2.1 or newer (1.1.4 could work as well). If you can move to XP, LabVIEW 8.5 and NI-845X 1.1.1 should work.

As for your main question "unable to access any subVI connected with NI-8451", do you mean they do not show on the function pallete?

Can you stop the service manually? I would suggest stopping the service, setting it Manual or Disabled, rebooting, and then run the uninstaller again. Hopefully you won't have to resort to uninstalling the service manually.

  • 100% CPU using LabView 7.1 and DSC module

Seven years ago I used BridgeView and PXI to execute a project, and the results were so good that after that initial system, I installed one more using BridgeView, and three more using LabView 7.1.
BridgeView is working very well, but lately, LabView 7.1 is giving me more and more problems. It all started in a system running LabView 7.1 and DSC on Windows XP, using a PXI-8187 controller with a PXI-1042 chassis. I have two PXI-6533 digital I/O boards, one PXI-6030E multifunction, one PXI-6713 analog output board, one PXI-6602 counter board and one PXI-8422 serial com. board. In may/06, all of the sudden, the CPU went to a 100% use. Since I am running PID's to control a flash-butt welding machine in a steel factory, this was extremely dangerous. I changed the controller and everything went back to normal. It was running fine until december/06, when the same behavior appeared again. This time changing the controller did not help. We increased the system memory, from 256 MB to 512 MB and everything worked fine. But one month later (january/07) the fault reappeared. This time we changed the chassis and from that moment to this time, we are running smoothly.
Application problems were suspect from the very first time this problem appeared, but I was unable to identify the source, if any. I used PROFILE VI's and apparently the write/read tags were taking all the processor resources. However, changing the routines and disabling communications, and optimizing CPU intensive programs never solved the CPU overload.
Until now, I was aware of only one system showing this erratic behavior. But today I went to check another system, with a totally different application. This one is used to measure the thickness of the steel sheet on a rolling mill. Is not so resource-intensive, but the maintenance folks told me that every time they turned off this particular system, they always had problems trying to turn it on.
I was suspecting of a PLC-communication related issue, but what I found turned my alarms on. I turned off the system, which was fully functional, and turned it back on, and there it was, CPU load at 100%!. Is exactly the same problem that I have on the welder. This system has a PXI-8184, a PXI-1042 chassis, Windows XP, one PXI-6030E, one PXI-6713 and one PXI-6533. I battled for 20 minutes to put the system back in normal conditions.
I specified every single board, installed everything and programmed all the applications. The BridgeView applications have never showed anything like this. I am using the DSC (Datalogging and Supervisory Control Module) on both applications, and the Lookout Protocol Drivers are communicating to Modicon PLC's.
Please, I need help to solve this issue. I believe none of your actual Knowledge Base "100% CPU" articles apply to my case...
    Thanks in advance...
    Antonio Jimenez
    [email protected]

    Thanks for your reply...
Yes, sometimes I have the feeling that the systems works again because some file or database gets initialized after so many reboots.
Intentionally I turned off all the events and alarm logging to disk. Also the historical data logging is disabled. This is done by code, every time the main VI is started. This was included precisely to save CPU processing power. However, I am communicating to PLC's, and of course I have to declare variables inside the citadel database to make the communication possible.
Right now I can't have access to the application, because the mill is rolling, but during the next maintenance stop I will check the database location and size, and I could change the directory location the next time the fault comes up.
