LAN connection downgrading to 100mbps?
Hi All,
I have a bit of an odd situation - my house is prewired with cat5e cable to most rooms, with a main junction box in our basement. I have a ABS (with gigabit lan) - and when I directly connect my laptop to the AEBS I get full 1gbs connections. Also, when I connect lines from my junction box in most rooms, then connect my laptop in those rooms, I get the full connection with the exception of 1 or 2 rooms. The connection is downgraded to a 100mbps connection and I can't figure out why?
Does the length of the cable downgrade after a certain point? I know the living room (one of the rooms that is downgraded for example) has around 50ft of cable - but the room next to it should have that much more/less of cable connects just fine at 1gbps. I length does have an effect, will a powered gigabit switch in our junction box solve the issue?
Just thought I would check in a room full of people that might help out! Thanks!
Dave
Dave,
CAT5e runs of up to 300 ft or so should not cause any issues provided the cable is not kinked at certain points (like inside a wall where you can't see it).
Chances are good that the terminations on the wall plates or other associated connections are not making solid contact or are wired incorrectly. This will sometimes allow a network connection, but the speed will drop significantly.
Have the guys who pulled the wires come out and check for correct wiring standards and good continuity at all connecting points. Chances are, they checked a few spots and pronounced the job done. Insist that they bring the proper test equipment and explain / demonstrate to you that each connection point is correctly wired. You should have equal performance throughout your network.

No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1update
Today i tried to solve a big issue after updating my AppleTV's to 5.1.1 (actual version: AppleTV3,1_5.1_10A406e_Restore.ipsw). After updating my Apple TV´s, they could not connect to the Apple activation server. No Home Sharing was adjustable and also logging in iTunesStore was not possible. The update I have done via LAN cable, and I changed nothing in my network configuration. The network (networkadress via DHCP) is indeed set up by default in the AppleTV automatically. Nevertheless, nothing went. Then I removed the network cable and made a reset of the AppleTV and tried to connect via Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi, he finds the activation server and everything works as it should. Home Sharing, iTunes, streaming. However, once the network cable is plugged in and the Apple TV is restarted, it is again not possible to get access the iTunesStore. Home Sharing is not possible. The networkcable are fine. Both MacBook, as well as my TVs have internet connection over the same network cable. If I unplug the network cable from the AppleTV again, anything goes. Only via WLAN, but it's just too slow to stream data from my Mac. I have this "strange behavior" on 3 AppleTV 3.Gen., which are in the apartment. The previous iOS-Version on the same network cables, worked great. Can anyone reproduce the problem? Or have I now 3 bricked devices? I tried to downgrade over itunes. But this is not possible anymore. I installed 3 times the update. But nothing goes. Please can anybody help me.
I found another link titled "Apple TV Death after update" and found several links that have proven to work to restore to the previous version. Here is my post:
"I had originally replied to a post titled "No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1 update". That has been my issue after updating to 5.1. Wirless worked for me but iTunes match and Podcasts were slow to respond. I finally downgraded to the previous version (5.0.2). So far, my ATV3 has been operating exactly as it did out of the box. No more activation failed message, and all components of ATV are functioning flawlessly on my whole home LAN network.
I also wonder what Apple was thinking for releasing this update without adaquate testing. I can forgive them for Maps, but not this. ATV has been around long enough for all of the kinks to be worked out and any updates to just plain work. I did like the new menu displays in apps and how you could rearrange the program icons on the home screen.
Perhaps they will get it right. Some day. But until they show proof that any future updates are correct and provide detailed instructions on how to revert back to a previous version, I will be very leary of updating. Spending a week reading message boards on how to do a simple resotre is not my idea of how to spend my weekends.
As a side note, I am a PC, so to restore from an .ispw file located on your system, you must press the Alt & Shift keys togather, then click the Restore button, and a window will pop-up so you can select the location for the restore file."
Directions to restore:
"Yes you can. I am a PC. Download the .ipsw file and save to your desktop. Unplug the LAN, HDMI and power cable. Connect the usb cable from your laptop to the ATV. If iTunes does not automatically launch, start it. After iTunes is running, plug in the power cable to the ATV. iTunes will recognize the ATV and will open the restore window in iTunes.
Press the Alt and Shift keys togather, then click on the Restore button. A file window will open so you can navigate to the desktop (or where ever you saved the file). Select the AppleTV3,1_5.-.2_9B830_Restore.ipsw file. iTunes will start the restore process.
When you see the message that it has completed the restore, unplug the usb cable and power cable. Reconnect the LAN and HDMI cable then plug in the Power cable in that sequence.
Follow the setup procedure again and all should be as it was before." -
LAN Connection Error: Panasonic DMP-BD35 Blu Ray Player
Hello,
My Panasonic DMP-BD35 Blu Ray player has a wired LAN connection port that is used to download firmware updates.
When I was using a DLink WBR-2310 with Verizon DSL the system worked perfectly with the BD35 player wired to a LAN port on the DLink router. I recently switched to Verizon FiOS and now the BD35 player is wired to LAN port 2 on the FiOS wireless router.
The BD35 is no longer able to connect to the network now that it is wired to the FiOS router. When I run the connection test an error is returned, "Cannot obtain IP Address using DHCP." However, all of my other network devices (Wii, Laptops, Desktops, Print Router, etc.) have had no problem connecting to the router, both wirelessly and wired. I have even wired a laptop to the jack that the BD35 is using and the laptop connects just fine (wireless turned off). Also, I checked the Port Configuration screen on the router and Port 2 is showing that it is connected at 100Mbps Full-Duplex when the BD35 is on, but the device does not appear on the list of devices connected on the My Network screen.
Here are the settings on the BD35:
- IP Address Auto Configuration (DHCP) = ON
- DNS Auto Configuration (DHCP) = OFF
- Auto Detect Connection Speed = ON
Does anyone have experience with this issue? Is it possible to setup a Static IP for the BD35 in the router using the MAC Address for the BD35?
Thank you!I'm not familiar with the Panasonic BD35 but I would suggest that you try it with DNS Auto Configuration turned on.
You may also be able to set it up with a manual address that is way out of the range of anything that you woudl normally use.
Try the following:
Check the TCP/IP Address that your PC is getting. Assuming your IP Address is set to 192.168.1.x set the Panasonic to
IP Address: 192.168.1.200
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1
The Verizon STBs will use 100 to 150 and your other DHCP Devices woudl normally use the addresses between 2 and 99.
If you still have problems try using OpenDNS and set the DNS address to 208.67.222.222.
If you are the original poster (OP) and your issue is solved, please remember to click the "Solution?" button so that others can more easily find it.
If anyone has been helpful to you, please show your appreciation by clicking the "Kudos" button. -

Lan connectivity Issue on autonomous AP with throttles
Hello,
I encounter a strange problem on several AP 1242 in version 12.4(25d)JA1 of a customer :
He has 10 autonomous AP covering a factory and is using them for laptop connectivity and TOIP with mainly 7921 Cisco Wifi Phones.
The phones are configured to use only 802.11a.
The APs loose LAN connectivity randomly and therefore the clients don't work anymore.
The AP are connected on a 2960 and a 3560 wich are in turn connected on a 3750 wich route the trafic.
After checking spanning-tree no loops are present.
When I check the counters on the AP involved I see the "trhottles" and "ignored" counters incrementing on the fa0 link of the AP impacted wich mean I think it can't handle the incoming traffic. This incoming traffic seems not to be too big however. I can see drops on the switch interface connecting the AP.
There is a lot of roaming on the AP due to people walking in the factory with their wifi phones.
Here is a view of the fa0 counters :

Does someone ever experienced a similar problem ?
When I shut radio interfaces they're is no more problems on the LAN. Can this be an overlapping coverage issue ?
Can someone please give me advices on how to troubleshoot this issue ?
Thank you in advance as I'm a bit stuck.
Best Regards,Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply.
Do you think this can be the origin of the issue my customer encounters or is it only to be standard ? As this change will have to be made on all clients, if there is a chance it solves the problem I will do it ASAP, if not I will delay it in a less busy period :-)
Can the constant roaming associations and dissasociations overload the AP and make it stop responding on the LAN or is it only a throuhput problem ?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

Error Code 10 Intel 82579LM LAN connection on Portege R830-13C
After recent Windows 7 32 Bit update, the LAN connection is failing to start (Code 10) under device manager
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
I have tried uninstalling drivers / rolling back / and installing the following files from Toshiba support pages, but does not resolve the issue.
- lan-20110330164846
- fareg-20110331130330
How do I get Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection on Portege 830 -13C to work?
(wireless is fine)Hi
Error Code 10 is generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device and usually its caused by outdated or corrupted drivers.
Therefore I think that driver installation should help to sort out this issue.
I would recommend doing this:
- Go to device manager and uninstall the LAN driver
- Reboot the notebook but dont install the driver
- Install the CCleaner and clean the registry
- Reboot the notebook once again
- Then go to device manager, choose the LAN card (Ethernet controller) and install the downloaded driver
As option I would recommend testing the LAN driver from Intel page. -
HP Slate 21 Kit Kat OTA Update Fix for Audio Quality and LAN Connectivity

Link to thread discussion here, fix listed below -
ISSUE:
A previously applied HP Slate 21 Kit Kat Update (Android 4.4.2) over the air (OTA) update may have caused issues with audio quality or wireless LAN connectivity.
Audio Quality: Bass response will be poor. Audio will play but bass frequencies will be lacking.
WiFi Issue: 5 GHz band not functioning properly
Status:
A new update (17r25.1-011-11-WW) has been released over the air (OTA) to end users
Resolution:
Apply update 17r25.1-011-11-WW
If the user was previously on 17r25.1-010-10-WW then a Factory Reset should be performed to complete the resolution.

I've fiddled with Team Viewer and was able to control my Mac on my PC, but it wasn't over my LAN connection (it was slow), and it was a small windowed view without the Mac's sound. I want to cotrol my Mac, with my PC over LAN and on a 1920x1080 resolution with the Mac's sound on my PC.
(Sry for a almost report of this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4031259) but I forgot to ask about the sound).well there is a program called logmein found at logmein.com. it fixes your resolution problem, but the speed is still not the best due to a lag still. As long as internet connections are decent, the lag should be minimal

Cannot re-boot after enabling K8T Neo LAN Connection
I've tried to enable the K8T Neo LAN controller in BIOS so that I can connect a Wireless Router to my PC. However, when I do this, the PC will not boot and I have to disable the LAN controller.
On booting-up the BIOS seems to be looking for an ethernet controller and a message states that either the device is not plugged in or the cable is faulty ! Why should enabling the onboard LAN controller affect the device the BIOS boots from ?
Can I plug a Wireless Router directly into the RJ45 LAN connection on the K8T Neo and if so, how ?
Thankyou for any helpful adviceCheck to make sure you are not set to boot from network. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact name or where it is located, but it may help.
Quote from: Geps on 07-July-05, 22:52:17
as you say: a WIRELESS router is WIRELESS, how could you plugin a cable from a wireles router. or does it also have rj45 conectors?
if you want to use the wirreles function, you will need to buy a wirrles lan adapter (usb) for your pc
I have never seen a wireless router without rj45 connectors. (WAP yes, router no).
Good Luck

Disable WLAN when LAN connected - how do I do?
Hi,
We are in the process of migrating from HP notebooks to Lenovo. We used to set a BIOS setting called "LAN/WLAN Switch" in the HP notebooks, which makes the WLAN to disable when the LAN cable is plugged in or the pc is docked
Where do I find a similar setting in Lenovo notebooks?
We need it because LAN and WLAN is on separate subnets, and Windows XP has trouble working with both nets at the same time. Users compalins about loss of network connectivity if both nets are enabled at the same time.
There may be a way to configure LAN/WLAN-switching in the Lenovo software, but we prefer to use the build in WLAN functionality in Windows, not using Access Connection or similar third party WLAN software. Our experience shows that uses often have difficulties finding out how to use third party WLAN software when traveling and need to connect to other WLAN's. The build in Windows WLAN software has the advantage that it is always the same, no matter which brand or model of pc they are using.

Peter
www.skov.dkCheck out Wireless AutoSwitch at http://www.wirelessautoswitch.com it does what you are asking.
What is Wireless AutoSwitch?
Wireless AutoSwitch runs as a service and will automatically disable your wireless card when you connect to a LAN (hard wire) connection, and re-enable the wireless card when there is no LAN connection. This ensures that you are always using the fastest connection for network traffic. In the office this helps reduce redundant network connections, while still helping your employees seamlessly transfer from wired to wireless network connections.
For offices that are wireless security conscious this application makes sure the laptop's wireless card is off when the user is wired into your network, preventing bridged connections and preventing someone from the outside hacking your network through a laptop's wireless card. -
Strange: just lost use of Built In Internet (LAN) connection!
Greetings,
I was just switching from wireless Airport connection to Built In internet (wired/LAN) connection (I do that to insure more reliable large downloads, software updates), and I realized that upon Turning Off Airport, I was not getting automatic connection to the built in NIC, as I do usually. I checked Preferences >>> Network, and observed that the built in connection was "inactive". I am not sure how to activate it again. LAN cable is OK, internet connection and modem OK, etc...
I'll appreciate refresher!
- Roger Tsig, thanks a lot for your prompt reply... I had restarted the system indeed.
I got to start looking deeper into seldom visited settings... And I found one that fixed the problem.
I went to "System Preferences" >>> "Network" >>> observed that the "Built In Internet" was INACTIVE >>> clicked on the smal, gear-like button at the bottom, right next to the "+" and "-" buttons. AND, lo and behold, by making the "Service Active", I restored the Built In Internet" connection.
Man, go figure what disconnected it in the first place! I just drew a blank initially!
Thanks again... Sometimes, one needs a prod

Actually we have UCS 6248 fabric interconnect - first twelve ports are enabled and same in Cisco UCS Manager.
But when more port will be active by expansion module then UCSM can manage that too or need any other licence for UCSM too? -
Purchased and installed last Wednesday. Wired and wireless LAN connections have dropped twice since then. Can't access 192.168.1.1 at all, for example.
EasyLink shows message "Different Network Detected". Attempting to use dialogs fails, however, since the router isn't responding.
If I unplug the router, wait, and the restore power, LAN connectivity is restored.
Firmware is up-to-date.
I expect occasional situations like this, but the frequency is troublesome. Any suggestions?
Mark
Message Edited by tcrg311 on 12-15-2007 08:21 AMI have just got this router yesterday. It did this right out of the box. After an hour or so the connection would just drop. For everything. Some other topic on this site suggested power surges for a similar problem. I moved my power supply to somewhere less crowded and have had continuous internet for about an hour now.
I'll let you know if it worked.
(Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

802.1x on a wired Lan Connection
Dear Community,
i have the job to connect a Windows CE 6.0 device to a Network (wired) with 802.1x. The switch to wich i connect the device is operating as authenticator and the Wince device is the supplicant. A Radius Server with AD is also present .
All the informations and samples that i can find are relating to wireless LAN connections (WZCSVC). A description of the EAPOL API is also absent (or i was not able to find it).
I'm afraid that Wince 6.0 is not prepared for using 802.1x over a wired connection like Win XP can, but i'm not sure about that. I can not find a definite statement whether it is possibe or not.
Does anybody know if it is possible and/or how i can solve this problem.
Regards AchimCommunity,
anybody has answer to this problem? I have to do the same thing...
Achim,
did you solve this problem?Thank you
in advance for any help you
can provide.
